THE  HOWELL FAMILY

Not what remains, but what we take away.

An Anglicized form of Hywel  (meaning “eminent”), the family boast Welsh and English roots, ones
that go as far as the 9th and 10th century. Descending from kings, they were on friendly terms with
their muggle brethren until it was no longer fashionable to be so. Since then they’ve adopted purist
leanings (or at least, appeared to), but their concerns still focus on one’s wealth (be it money, property
or knowledge) and personal merit. Modern day descendants enjoy an enormous amount of influence,
particularly in law enforcement. Many of the older membershold high level positions of some kind,
usually as esteemed Elders or Department Heads.

They’ve also produced nearly as many Unspeakables, but that isn’t something they like to advertise.

Unlike other purebloods, the Howells do not seem as preoccupied with purity as much as they once
claimed to be. While muggles were still shunned in favor of the Statute, a number of halfbloods have
been received into their ranks with minimal amount of fuss. If anything they are more skeptical of
foreigners and their eccentricities, though they have not let that stop them from forging alliances in the
past. Notable among these connections are the Incandenza, Prewett, Lestrange, Urquart, St. Martin,
Chant, Rosier, Townsend and Carstairs families.

The first Howell in recorded history is Idris Hywel. He had nine children, but only two are survived
by magical offspring: Agrona and Meredydd.

The eldest of Idris’ line, Agrona was widely considered to be as cunning as she was fair—though, as
a woman of the medieval ages, she would have had to be. To secure power, land and wealth for her
children in her name, Agrona convinced her husband-to-be take her name and wrangled a match
between one of her sons and a daughter from muggle nobility.

By the 18th century her heir, a Wizengamot Elder, had five brothers and a sister, and later, several
children. The eldest of them, Alarbus, married the Minister’s Undersecretary of the time, and had
three children: Cyrus, Sybill and Althea.

Cyrus Howell

Helena Carstairs

An ambitious, hardworking type even as a child, Cyrus ruthlessly shouldered his way up the ranks
until he found himself heading the lot of them as Head of the International Magical Office of Law.
In time he married Helena Carstairs née Rosier, a shrewd, striking witch from Goblin Liaison. As an
opponent of Grindelwald, he risked much to stand by his ideals and survive—only to lose his wife,
and then his own life, during the First Wizarding War. They had three sons.

Sofia Incandenza

As the oldest of Cyrus Howell’s sons, Arviragus was under a lot of pressure from the very beginning,
until he found himself heading the lot of them as Head of the International Magical Office of Law. He
had to do well in school, land a good job in a respectable profession, marry well—make something of
himself. And so, deciding to follow his honored father’s footsteps, the young man went into law. Once
he passed the bar, he began working for the Ministry as a lawyer, familiarizing himself with the
complexities of magical law until he found himself working in the Office of International Magical Law,
just as his father had.

Of course, he still had to marry, and so in time he came to an delicate understanding with a coworker,
Sofia Incandenza, a witch of different ambitions but similar drive. Eventually they married in the spring
of 1965, and had two sons – Edmund and Tybalt – both of whom they had high expectations for.

Tybalt

But these dreams were to be dashed. Although both sons had been Sorted into Slytherin - a promising
sign, to be sure - they had very different ideas of ‘doing well’, as well as work. Neither seemed concerned
about strong work ethics or respectability, much to Arviragus’ dismay, except easy money, luxury, and
instant gratification. They were wastrels, disgraces to the Howell name.

Then Tybalt married, and for a while it seemed at least one of them was on the right track; Marceline
was a halfblood, but then so had been Cyrus, and anyway she was from respectable (if foreign) stock.
As the sole heiress she was plenty wealthy, but as a witch she was quite remarkable, too. Charming,
witty, and quite brilliant at potions, she was a partner in a lucrative business venture. In time, the couple
produced a daughter.

Unfortunately, not even this would last, either. Almost ten years later the marriage fell apart, Tybalt
leaving for parts unknown and Marceline – regrettably – turned to her father, the cantankerous,
dubiously named muggle Eamon Slant, and ceased contact completely. It would be years until they
saw their granddaughter again, and by then the damage was already done: she was virtually a
muggleborn, but more importantly was largely indifferent toward any gesture of reconciliation.

These days things are better, but progress is slow, for obvious reasons.

AGRONA’S LINE:
Yorick’s branch

=

Giovanna Townsend
1946 -
Less ambitious than Argus and more introverted than Gid, Yorick was fairly quiet in comparison,
though he was certainly popular. Curious but not bookish, sarcastic yet - perhaps - the kindest of
his brothers, Yorick was the least eager to please, though he certainly did well in living up to his
family’s (other) legacy.

Ever the pragmatist, Yorick kept his head down during the First and Second Wars, knowing well
that any stand he made would be useless to the resistance. But he helped in other ways; Gia, an
Auror from Italy, had her own connections, and together they used them to help smuggle muggle-
borns to safety.

Together, they had one son, Phillip. Like his father, Phillip was a Ravenclaw through and through–
studious and inquisitive, and oh so careful with his words– though without that desire to offend.
But he took after his mother, too. Instead of vying for a desk job so many expected of him, or even
one in the Department of Mysteries, he joined the Auror Corps.

Sadly, from the Second War Phillip emerged a broken man. Though he survived his stay with a
group of particularly nasty Death Eaters, it is clear that he isn’t the same man he once was; there
are cracks now, in that pleasant persona. He’s more easily upset, and prone to long bouts of
brooding that make him... uncomfortable to be around, to say the least.

AGRONA’S LINE:
Gideon’s branch

- - -

Udoubtably the most hedonistic of his brothers (without being an absolute profligate), Gideon is
laid-back yet bold, shrewd yet cocky—the most charming, certainly, and unarguably fortunate
to have been born last.

As the youngest, he didn’t have as many responsibilities as his brothers, and so as such he was a
lot more reckless, could care less about who he offended. For his time, Gideon was wildly out-
spoken. Of course, sometimes this was a good thing; when he saw something, he spoke up. He
made a wonderfully fearless Auror. But as a son from a good family, he could be terribly candid.

Still, the man had his charms, and even they were enough for the uncompromising Lenore Prewett,
with whom he shared little in personality but a surprising amount of attraction. And in her own
way, she was darling. After a couple of years of well-sharpened retorts and the occasional bouquet
of flowers, they married. Shortly after, Thayet was born.

But this was during the Dark Lord’s first rampage, and times were grim. As reports grew more and
more appalling, Gideon found himself buried in work. He missed many, if not all of Thayet’s mile-
stones. By the time Voldemort had fallen, Gideon was a stranger to his daughter, and he had grown
distant with his wife; after the things he’d seen, he found it hard to connect with her anymore. They
began to fight over all manners of things. He was never home, she always nagged, he came home
to relax, he never showed interest in his own daughter...

She was right, of course. He couldn’t be less interested; in his absence Thayet had become her little
darling, this docile creature who followed her about and hung onto her every word. She would
become a proper lady, he saw. She would be graceful, articulate, and charming. If she was devoted to
her studies (and she was), she would uphold the family reputation; if she married well (and she did,
to a respectable young man of French origins), she would have perfectly darling children. And with
things strained between him and her mother, Gideon couldn’t be more repelled.

For Thayet’s sake, they tried again, tried to find that spark again. And they must have, because a year
later Hermia was born. But it clearly hadn’t been the same, because two years before, Gideon...
strayed.

1984 -
Unlike Lenore, Sabine was sultry, unusual, compelling—and breathtakingly  independent. Though
she was clearly a lady, with her innate grace and own gracious manner, she was also uncaring of
conventions and norms, the rubber mallet that invisibly kept so many in check. No, society’s chains
were for other people. And so she and Gideon slept together. What skin was it off her nose that he
was a married man? He was the married one, and she was without family she particularly cared
for. She had more pressing concerns, primarily ones focused on her work. A mayfly affair was nothing.

But then she was pregnant, and, well—after Gideon’s divorce, the man kept coming around, trying
to endear himself to her with his reckless ways. And it was working.

Morgana help her, it was working.

Gradually, oh so gradually, Gideon ingratiated himself into her life, as well as those of their children.
Much to his fascination, the twins were an odd pair, in both appearance and personality; not only
did they share her striking looks, but there were hints of her in their manner, too. They were pale,
solemn children, in a way that suggested they had already begun making their peace with this
perplexing world around them. Claudius was fretful and bashful whereas Verona was direct and
demanding, but both twins were sincere, and curious about things that didn’t directly affect them,
or they couldn’t see. It was a refreshing - welcome - change from the children he had left behind.

It would be years later when their mother would finally agree to marry him, but until then they raised
their children together regardless. With his parents (regrettably) deceased, Gideon only had his
eldest brother to deal with on the matter of his intentions. A second marriage would hardly change
a thing.

Unfortunately, their time was brief; a year later Sabine was killed in a freak accident at the Department
of Mysteries. It was a terrible blow to all who knew her. The children withdrew into their shells–Gideon,
to drink. He was still able to work, but only just. The only silver lining to be found was reconciliation
with his brother, which he would have gladly traded for more time with his wife.

A vacation with his other brother, Yorick, to the States was both welcome as it wasn’t. Yorick knew how
to cut loose, somewhat, but his company was soured by the fact that it was necessary. Still, they enjoyed
themselves. In fact, it was Yorick who introduced him to the witch who would be his next wife: Hayley.

Vivacious, ambitious and - like he - forthright nearly to a fault, she was charming, but she was also
much younger than him. Though she was a refreshing change to his otherwise gloomy life, the age
difference often set them worlds apart. At first it looked like it would only be fling.

But Hayley was a smart witch, and in the weeks they knew each other it was clear she was more than
able to surprise him. So they kept in touch. Months passed, and then a year. Eventually – inevitably –
her patience paid off. In the summer of 1999, they married; ten months later, Arthur was born.
