Later, after 4th and 5th year presentations…

Not long after the fourth and fifth years trickled out of the clearing (–some of them lagging behind, to say their goodbyes), the NEWTs students began to arrive, if they hadn’t already. (And indeed, many had.) Shona– having heard them approach long before they appeared –was almost bouncing on the transfigured crate she’d been using as a podium, waving them over urgently, excitedly, with a broad, toothy grin.

“Come onnnnn,” she bellowed, stamping her foot and shaking her clipboard at them for emphasis. “Hurry up! Daylight’s a-waaaaaasting.”

Rick, seated on a boulder closer than the pen, wordlessly dragged a hand down his face and pinched the bit between his eyes.

Since presentations began,[1] the witch’s energy hadn’t ebbed a bit. Even when they had hit a lull or two – there was, unfortunately, always a few who’d put a dazed look in many a classmate’s eyes (not to mention the rare death that seemed trademark of any class being that class—Shona’s eye minutely twitched as one Gryffindor came to mind, expression blank as she presented her unmistakably dead fish) – she had still pushed on with the enthusiasm with which she’d started; as much as she had come to adore her younger students –the fourth years especially, she could always count on them for a laugh– they were not her NEWTs, who she expected to meet and exceed her expectations. They were the advanced classes, and therefore more experienced. Should be more experienced. Shona was curious, almost anxious to see how their projects had turned out. Impatiently she watched them climb onto the bleachers, joined by their beasts. Hurry uuuuuuuup, she stared at them, mentally willing them to do so.

Morning’s breakfast was, perhaps, beginning to take its toll on her.

“Is that everyone?” she called, waiting a bit for everyone to settle down. “Hello–? Hey!” They quieted down. “Thank you,” she huffed. But a smile cracked through, and before long she was grinning again, at the motley assortment seated before her. “Are we missing anyone?”

Just then, another student emerged—Micah Gallagher, a sixth year Hufflepuff turned six, running towards them as fast as his shortened legs could carry him –the tucked in body of his Chukwa turtle floating behind him. “Professor,” he gasped, bracing a small hand against the edge of her crate. “I’m– I’m.”

Shona bent to pat his head. “Just take a seat,” she said kindly, and as he scampered off (Benji, of course, trailing after him) she fixed the assembled students with a bright bright grin. “All right. So! Welcome, witches and wizards, to your last day of class! This is the homestretch, the end of the line. You’ve made it this far, and I’ve gotta say I’m really impressed with what I’ve seen. I’d even go so far as to say ‘proud’—if, y’know, I could rightfully take any credit.”

She paused, beaming even more brightly as students laughed, and continued,

“But–” Someone groaned. “But. You’ve still got one more hurdle, and I can’t let you go ‘til you’ve overcome it! So with that said… who wants to go first? Anyone?”

Hands rose. Grinning brightly – pleased as punch – Shona avidly scanned the crowd.

 1. COMC 4th & 5th Year Final Presentations
Last Edit: October 09, 2014, 01:47:41 PM by Shona Donovan

STUDENT
  • Name: Verity Bell
House & Year: Hufflepuff, 6th year

CREATURE
  • Name: Iroh
    Classification: Tanuki
    Rating: XXX

Today was not Verity's day. Breakfast had given her a nasty surprise and reverted her to a much younger state, resulting in her being in the body of a 5-year-old boy. She had managed to shrink her clothes to her new size, but it had possibly only made the stares worse as she now appeared as a young boy in a skirt. Her sun hat helped somewhat to give her a more feminine appearance, though with her short hair completely covered by the hat, she looked like a well-dressed ad for St. Jude's Medical.

Iroh, the tanuki she'd been training for the past couple months, had initially not recognized her until she scolded him for perving on the aged up younger years. The two sat next to each other, and Verity fiddled with the hem of her skirt as she feared drawing attention to herself in her current state. Before Professor Donovan called for quiet from the students, the Hufflepuff attempted to get a last minute pep talk in with her charge.

"Iroh, please don't transform into my current appearance. Remember how I normally look, and shapeshift into that form, and please don't forget the clothing. I am already mortified enough to last me a lifetime," she pleaded, her small hands clasped tightly together. The tanuki grinned at her, and she hoped beyond hope that it was meant to be reassuring, though he always seemed to have a mischievous glint in his eyes.

When Professor Donovan asked if anyone was missing, Verity looked around and noticed that Micah was not there, and was about to say as such when he came huffing towards them. She waved to him and patted the open seat between her and Ji-Hyun, and was glad that he had already seen her (though she had left the Great Hall in tears when the transformation set in) so he would hopefully recognize who she was. He thankfully did, and sat beside her and she gave him a small smile as an apology for her behavior that morning. Reverting to this form was not exactly pleasant for her, but it didn't give her free reign to behave so histrionically.

Despite her reluctance to be noticed, Verity's drive to be scholastically stellar forced her to raise her hand in hopes of going first. Plus, going first meant that she could leave sooner and retire to the safety and seclusion of her dormitory while she waited for the effects of whatever potion had been planted in the food to wear off. Verity took a deep breath when Professor Donovan chose her to go first, and she adjusted her hat before making her way down from the bleachers and towards the platform where presentations had been conducted. She gave a thumbs up to her friends as she passed them, letting them know that she wasn't on the verge of tears, though she despaired when she had to practically climb onto the platform. Once she and Iroh were both up, she smoothed out her skirt and took a deep breath.

"I know that I might be well unrecognizable, but I'm Verity, and this," she motioned towards Iroh, who took a deep bow, "is Iroh the tanuki." She spoke with a slight whistle due to missing a couple of her front teeth. "I have trained him diligently these past couple months, and we will demonstrate what I have taught him. Iroh?"

Iroh brought out a tea set from the basket he had been carrying and put the water on a boil. Verity crossed her fingers and attempted to even cross her toes in hopes that it might increase her luck even further.

"While the water heats up, he shall demonstrate one of a tanuki's most famous abilities," she nodded to the bipedal raccoon dog, and he smiled broadly before transforming gracefully into a carbon copy of Verity (how she normally appeared as a teenager), and she breathed a sigh of relief that he had included her school uniform. "Tanuki are known to be rather mischievous creatures, and there are stories in Japan of them kidnapping brides and taking their form in order to have access to the food and open bar at the wedding. Due to their similarities, they are thought to be related to kitsune, though tanuki are actually superior shapeshifters.  Now, the water is at a boil..."

The tanuki-Verity knelt down and poured a few cups of jasmine tea, and handed one to Verity and another to Shona. Verity gave Iroh a stern look, and he giggled while still in Verity's form and snapped his fingers. The tea cups that he had given her and Shona lost their glamour and returned to their actual form - rocks. The Hufflepuff grimaced and shook her head. "Like I said, they are mischievous. Iroh was showing another ability of the tanuki, which is glamouring. They are able to make ordinary objects, often leaves or rocks, appear as something else. Many tales exist of a tanuki giving a person a large sum of money, but when they try to pay for something they just have a pocket full of pebbles. But the actual tea should be finished steeping at this point."

Iroh gave Shona a real cup of jasmine tea, and Verity did a small curtsy before packing up the basket and climbing down from the stage. She headed back to her seat, having decided that staying and supporting her friends was more important than hiding away, and was ashamed that she had even considered doing such an act. So she stayed, clapping and cheering loudly for her friends when they finished their presentations. She would get through this day with their support.

STUDENT
  • Name:  Cadance Bulstrode
House & Year:  Slytherin 6th Year

CREATURE
  • Name:  Soarin
    Classification:  Aethonan
    Rating:  XXX

Cadance strutted up to the platform in a pair of khakis riding pants, knee high riding boots and a simple tank top, forgoing the traditional equestrian jacket as her petite six year old body didn't suit it. She had unfortunately been subjected to the enchanted breakfast faire as well but with her porcelain skin, piercing blue eyes and blonde ringlets she wasn't hard to mistaken. In fact when she had arrived at the habitats to collect her charge the colt had bounded up to her excitedly without hesitation. With reigns in hand Cadance led the beautiful winged horse up to the platform with her.

The young colt that usually came up to her shoulder was towering over her. His Palomino coat was dark around his hooves, snout and wings and his mane carried the deep chestnut colour that was popular with the common winged breed of Great Britain. Cadance dropped the reigns and unhooked them from his bridle as she turned to the collection of students, "This is Soarin." Her voice was a few octaves higher than it usually was but still held her air of polite confidence, "Soarin is a three year old Aethonan colt. He was sired by my own personal Aethonan from home and brought here for the school year." Cadance's original Aethanon was a full grown Stallion who she had been raising and riding for ten years, her mother believing it to be more proper for a witch to ride a horse than a broom.

"Aethonan's are brilliant fliers and make for great mounts, however Mare's are more often chosen for riding. Colts and even later on Stallions are better suited for racing and stunt flying. One needs to have a special bond with them in order to be allowed to ride one. A colt at Soarin's age isn't ready for a rider, even one of my size." She chuckled softly at the predicament she was suddenly in, "So instead we've been working on his flying."

Cadance removed her wand and pointed it to the sky, with a swish a dozen shimmering rings appeared in a circuit. She ran her small fingers through the colt's chestnut mane, "Up!" She commanded and the winged horse took to the sky weaving, dipping and swirling through the hoops Cadance had set out of him, "Like their Abraxan cousins, Aethonan do enjoy the taste of whiskey but don't make a singular diet of it. They also won't grow as big or as strong. Soarin here is like to grow to be only a bit larger than the average muggle equine, though his wing span will outstretch a full grown Hippogriff, which makes them such great fliers." At this point the colt above had gone into a dive to twirl through a hoop that was much lower than the others, as soon as he was through he spread his wings and pulled up.

He flew through one more hoop before circling back down and landing by Cadance's side, "Unlike his father he's likely to go on to be a performance horse rather than a personal riding one." She turned to Professor Donovan and nodded before hooking up Soarin's reigns once more and leading him off the platform.

STUDENT
  • Name:  Peyton Wentworth
House & Year:  Ravenclaw Sixth Year

CREATURE
  • Name:  Bomber
    Classification:  Parasprite
    Rating:  XXX

Peyton awkwardly made his way up to the platform. In the body of a seven year old he was a little taller than average and gangly looking, it had taken Quidditch for him to come into his body, helped by weight training and puberty but Peyton had been an awkward kid and he wasn't too pleased about being reminded of that fact. In his hands, he held a large bell jar with what looked like an oversized pair of earphones over the sides of it and a brown sack. At the top of the platform he placed both on a table facing the other students.

Peyton brushed his brown hair out of his eyes and turned to the jar, not opening it just yet. Inside was a large powder blue puff ball floating around. It had large eyes and a pair of translucent wings but no other discernible features, "Meet Bomber, he - umm I think it's a he - he's a Parasprite. Parasprites are what I think to be misunderstood creatures. They're seen as pests but aren't as destructive as many think."

"Parasprites are drawn to magic, they can devour almost a hundred times their own weight and they breed rapidly. An "infestation" of parasprites can wipe out entire crops in matter of days but most wizards these days can easily deal with them. While they are drawn to magic, which brings them to magical gardens and farms they are also drawn to music. Parasprites love to dance. Even a small music box can keep them from destroying a garden." He motioned to the large earphones around the jar and the floating sprite inside.

"There's not really much you can teach a Parasprite, I mean I suppose you can teach it to dance but" He scratched at the back of his neck and blushed slightly implying that while you could teach one to dance you'd probably need to know how to dance yourself, "Instead I wanted to know if you could teach, or possibly condition one to eat something other than crops."

Peyton opened the brown bag and dumped out a half a dozen ears of corn. Half were bright yellow and peaking out of the gentle green husks, the other half were dull and spotted with brown and black spots obviously beginning to rot, "These are from a farm that uses magical fertilizer to help the crops grow, a prime candidate for a Parasprite to eat." He removed his wand and pointed it at the spotted corn, turning them bright purple, "However my theory, since they're drawn to magic, is to put more magic into something you actually want them to eat." He unscrewed the top of the bell jar allowing the little fluff of sprite to fly out. Almost instantly it landed on the purple corn and in the matter of seconds it had devoured it, cobb and all. As it moved onto the next one it shuttered slightly and two more puff balls, a pink one and a green one rolled out from it's side and continued to eat the purple corn.

With a cheeky little grin Peyton scooped all three up and put them in the jar sealing them in and tapping the earphones with his wand. The sprites inside began to dance, "I figured, most farmers could probably put their appetites to good use." He put the good corn back in the bag and picked up the bell jar with the dancing sprites before leaving the platform.

STUDENT
  • Name: Xavier Tawse
House & Year: Slithering Sixth Year

CREATURE
  • Name: Blitz
    Classification: Ceryneain Hind
    Rating: XXX

Xavier took to the platform in front of the gathered students, his head a little lowered. He had a smirk on his face during Verity's and Cadance's presentations but his expression had soured when the Ravenclaw had shown off his sprite. Like his fellow students Xavier was now in the body of a six year old and bore a striking resemblance to his half brother. He was a few inches shorter and not as gangly looking but the two looked much more like brothers at this age than they normally did as teenagers. He came to a stop and looked at the other students. He put two fingers in his mouth and whistled. A streaking blur of gold flashed across the platform and suddenly there was a young fawn standing by his side.

"Blitz 'ere is a Ceryneain Hind. Dhey're also known as Golden Hinds." Xavier put his hand on the fawn's flank and gave a gentle pat. The young deer stood to about his shoulder. He had small budding antlers that shone brightly in the summer sun, his brass hooves shimmering. "Blitz, run." he gave the flank a stronger smack and once again the deer was a golden blur moving through the obstacle course that was set out behind the platform.

"The Ceryneain Hind's git dhemselves famous in thee tale of Heracles. He had to catch one. Thee Hinds are thee fastest magical creatures in Europe, or close to. Dhey were highly sought afta fer dheir golden antlers an dheir brass hooves. T'ing is no one eva seemed able ta catch 'em." Behind him, the blur was doing a second circuit of the course, "A few decades ago some wizards in Greece managed ta catch some an studied 'em. Found out dhey shed dheir antlers, makes more than enough gold, no need ta kill 'em, so long as ye cin keep 'em. Dhey're tricky and wicked fast."

Xavier whistled again and the golden streak became a fawn by his side once more, "Blitz is just a lil guy, speed is his survival an' he's only gonna git faster." He looked to Professor Donovan wondering if he had done well enough. With a hand on Blitz' back he walked off the platform.
