[June 16th] The Idleness Will Kill Me [One Shot]

Patience was not one of the virtues Eva possessed, which to be fair was a rather short list, and waiting in her upscale flat for Cyrus Falkenrath to knock on her door was getting old. She hadn't been in the UK for more than a couple weeks and she was almost at her wit's end due to her current state of employment. Or lack thereof. The tall blonde didn't handle inactivity well. What am I doing? Hiding while awaiting some horrible fate is beneath me.

With that thought, Eva grabbed a light jacket and walked out of her flat, her boots clacking on the steps down. It was a nice late spring day with a cool breeze that tousled her blonde locks playfully, and she set a brisk pace for her aimless wandering. The people who lived around her were mostly the nouveau riche, and she delighted in guessing when they'd blow the last bit of their cash in some foolish manner forcing them to live within their means once again. Not everyone was meant to live fabulously. Her critical attitude towards her neighbors was not helped by the fact that she often picked up on their incredibly vapid thoughts, as she monitored everyone she came into contact with to make sure that they weren't connected with Cyrus.

Where am I even going? She asked herself when she got out of her head enough to notice her surroundings. Eva had never been in this part of the city, and she looked around and saw that passersby didn't even look towards the wooded pathway to her left. Curiosity won out, and she made her way down the cobbled street that looked to be in quite a state of disrepair. This place must be enchanted or something... But why? It looks like no one has walked down here in ages. The trees' gnarled roots took out much of the path, and patches of grass grew between the stones. Eventually the woods became completely overgrown, but Eva trudged onward, determined to find whatever it was that was worth hiding. Walking through such difficult terrain in heels would have been a near impossible task for someone who wasn't Evangeline Verglas, but she had managed to traverse much more precarious landscapes in far less practical footwear.

After a distance, Eva reached a clearing and saw a large brick building covered with ivy, and slowly approached the dilapidated building. As she neared, she saw several more in similar states of disrepair and she wondered who left this estate. She opened the large door to the first building and dust motes floated in the air visible by the beams of sunlight that passed through the many broken windows. Was this a college campus? Why is it being hidden? As she made her way down the dusty hallway, the gears in her mind started turning. Wasn't it just last week that she had met up with Bai for coffee and expressed how she didn't know what she was doing with her life? How she missed being 'the hand that rocked the cradle'?

The blonde witch turned towards what could be a classroom and folded her arms across her chest, her brow furrowed in thought. The wizarding community within the US supported higher learning, so why not Britain? It was a bit of a fixer-upper, but as luck would have it, Eva knew just the guy. I wanted an excuse to see Rick again, anyway... She needed a project, and this would give her life direction that she had lacked since leaving the Cabal. And Ana was no longer around to ruin this school.

Walking out of the building, the sun shone down on her and for the first time in years, Eva felt optimistic. Sure, she might still have to look over her shoulder, but this was something she could accomplish. Eva would not allow such a trivial concern to prevent her from living her life any longer.
