Physical Description: Eva is a tall woman at 5'10", and her propensity for high heeled boots often puts her over 6', who holds herself with a regal air, befitting one who has held the title of Queen. Her light ash blonde hair falls just below her shoulders, though she is naturally a brunette (but she keeps that secret tightly locked away), and her piercing icy blue eyes often have a measure of disdain within them. When she speaks, her alto voice is sultry and confident, and completes her image of nobility for many find it difficult to not hang onto her every word.
Vanity is a virtue in her eyes, and she takes an immense amount of pride in her body, though one can hardly fault her as she is quite flawless. She tends to dress in extremely form-fitting outfits that often show ample cleavage, though contrary to what many might think, she really does dress for herself. She simply feels most herself when she is showing skin.
Personality Description: Eva is an urbane witch with an acerbic wit and the power to back it up. She can be manipulative and vindictive, but beneath her cool exterior, she actually is quite caring. Having grown up in her family, and then as the Queen of Swords within the Cabal, her moral compass doesn't always point due North (or even always in the general direction), but she does feel a tremendous amount of guilt for her colored past. The epitome of regal, and can be quite haughty with her elitist attitude, but she values merit and hard work, and has been known to (begrudgingly) admit fault.
Rarely one to show emotion, Eva snubs those who eschew logic and reason, and has a markedly cynical attitude towards people in general. However, should someone manage to prove themselves worthy, Eva is loyal to a reasonable degree, and won’t turn her back on them until they prove themselves not useful or more trouble than they’re worth. She doesn’t value unwavering loyalty, as she finds it to be a logical fallacy.
Overall, Eva is attempting to rectify her past mistakes, but sometimes needs help remembering that she is one of the good guys, as it doesn’t always agree with her nature.
History: The third child born to Jonah and Cassandra Verglas, Eva’s childhood was largely lived in fear of her father, an affluent American artificer, who was a tyrant towards his wife and four children. Soon after the youngest daughter, Vivienne, was born, Jonah moved his family across the ocean to Europe for reasons that he didn’t divulge to his family. Her mother used prescription drugs to escape, leaving her unreliable as a pillar of support to young Eva. Only D’artagnan, her older brother, truly paid attention to her, and he protected her from both their father and her older sister, Anastasia, who out of all of the children attempted to please Jonah. However, when Eva received her letter to Hogwarts, Dart (a Squib) wasn’t able to protect her from Ana, who used her influence to make Eva a veritable pariah among the student body. And her quiet rebellion against her father, by being sorted into Ravenclaw rather than Slytherin, did nothing to increase her standing with the man.
During her fifth year, she learned about Legilimency, and began practicing in secret, gleaning information from her fellow students to assist in her studying, and used it to blackmail her father and older sister. During her family’s summer trip after her seventh year, Ana revealed to Jonah that Dart was gay, and involved with another man, which caused their father to become enraged and Eva used evidence of her father’s infidelity to silence him. Though her mother largely ignored the evidence, and continued her life of feigned ignorance. After the trip, Dart managed to escape their father’s clutches and lived with his boyfriend, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end. Jonah located the young man’s home and dredged up a past criminal record, which he used to send Dart’s boyfriend to Azkaban. Her brother became incredibly depressed and withdrawn afterwards, and had to move back to the family estate.
It was during this time that Eva was practicing her Legilimency and accidentally gleaned his thoughts. She rushed to his room, and found him bleeding out on his bed. Panicked, young Eva called out for help, and it was then she found out about her father’s terrible secret. So great was Jonah’s vanity, he feared his own mortality and had become a vampire. He forced the “gift” upon Dart, stating that at least now the young man wouldn’t be utterly useless. Jonah then named Eva as his heir, but horrified by what occurred, and guilt-ridden by her part in it, Eva set off on her own, cutting herself off from her family.
She settled down in California with a new look, and went to Laevenstrome’s Fundunct of Sorcery to continue her education as an artificer. It was here that she found a fellow Legilimens, Tiana Bellacroix, who also trained her in Occlumency. Tiana taught her more about the ethics of Legilimency, and mind magic in general, and they became a near inseparable pair. However, during this time, a young Muggle man, Brandon Holmgren, began to pursue Eva romantically, and – despite her wariness – she was fond of him as well. However, after a date with him, he physically attacked her. Luckily, passersby pulled him off of her, but she was shaken by the encounter. Tiana comforted her after the attack, but soon Eva realized that her friend was behind the attack, having controlled Brandon in an attempt to drive Evangeline away from trusting Muggles, as they would never be able to accept her fully. The revelation horrified Eva, and after a conflict, Tiana ended up in a permanent vegetative state.
Eva left Laevenstrome’s shortly after that incident, and traveled to the East coast. Settling in Massachusetts, she met the charismatic and affluent Cyrus Falkenrath, and after a bit of prying into his mind, Eva learned of the Cabal: a secret wizarding society lead by Cyrus whose influence extended over much of the eastern United States. Intrigued, she became a dancer at Cyrus’ club that acted as a base of operations for the Cabal, eventually clawing her way into a seat of power as the Queen of Swords opposite Cyrus himself. As the Queen of Swords, Eva rooted out threats to the Cabal with her Legilimency, and also met with various politicians to learn their secrets. She also started up a school within the group, teaching children of powerful witches and wizards who found the rules of the wizarding schools to be too stifling for their tastes.
After years of service, Eva grew disenchanted by the Cabal as their influence was merely creating a better world for them, not all magical people. This became incredibly apparent when Eva encountered wizarding agents from the UK who had managed to catch scent of the Cabal. Eva was sent to treatise with them, and attempted to bring them into their fold, but the diplomatic approach didn’t go over as well as hoped. Cyrus captured many members of the team and after the encounter, Eva had been left with a seed of doubt towards her leader. She peered into his mind and was horrified by his endgame. Unfortunately, Cyrus noticed her in his mind, and she was only able to free one of the prisoners before having to flee herself. Now she has found herself back in Britain, constantly looking over her shoulder as she worries which members of her old group are tracking her as she tries to atone for her criminal past.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: When she was the Queen of Swords, Eva monitored her colleagues and esteemed world leaders, and notified the other members of the Cabal of any perceived threats. She also used her skill with Arithmancy to predict changes in stocks and such, allowing the Cabal to maintain their wealth. In addition, Eva invented many magical devices as an artificer that aided the Cabal in their missions.
As the Cabal grew in power and scope, she taught children of powerful witches and wizards in the rudiments of magic, as well as certain subjects that were considered more taboo by the wizarding community at large.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: She has a lot of experience in Legilimency and Occlumency, and mind magic in general, which assisted in her snuffing out possible threats to her group, and her ingenuity as an artificer allowed her to create devices that prevented scrying from outside sources or assisted in her Legilimency.
Eva also feels at ease teaching students, as "the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world", and is quite skilled at it, having tutored many fellow students throughout her schooling.
