[June 24] Window Shopping (Open)

on August 05, 2014, 10:52:51 PM

Iggy exited Madam Primpernelle's, his small bag full with a new enchanted razor and a small vial of potion to heal the cuts on his face.  He'd never been one to point a wand at his own face regardless of how well he knew a spell.  And he wasn't about to ask Morgan[1] to heal extremely minor cuts.  Thankfully he'd already needed to go shopping when his razor decided to start taking nicks of skin as well as his hair off his face.

Granted he wasn't happy to be strolling down looking like a teenager on his first attempt to shave, but he'd put off shopping for his aunt Wynelle's[2] birthday gift.  His family was even celebrating his aunt's birthday three days early since her birthday was the day after the full moon, and he was rarely if ever up for celebrations, or generally leaving his bed, the day after the full moon.  The Potion didn't make the whole experience any less exhausting for him.  Between that, and his grandmother harping on him about how he was old enough now that he needed to be getting at least birthday gifts for his parents and aunts and uncles, he really did not have an excuse for showing up gift-less.

Of course it would help if he had any idea what to get his aunt.  If only things hadn't fizzled out with Brett, he could have asked her what an auror might like.  But beyond her and her friends, and his aunt, Iggy tended to avoid aurors.  A fine feat when his father and grandfather were both members of the Wizengamot.  He was sure she wouldn't want anything from Quality Quidditch Supplies; she had an owl, so maybe something from Eeylops for her owl; Flourish and Blotts was a dead end, he had no idea what she liked to read.  Morgan on the other hand was always happy with any book, which could usually get him a nice hangover cure potion.  Maybe something from Gambol and Japes or Weasley's.  An assortment of candy was always a safe choice, though uninspired.

He needed to make a decision; he couldn't wander up and down Diagon Alley all day window shopping.

Summer had officially begun, which meant that Claire wanted to spend every waking moment baking in the sun. She had fair skin that didn't tan, but that wasn't from lack of sun exposure. More often than not, Claire resembled a fresh tomato in the summertime. She wasn't quite at that point yet, but her cheeks and shoulders were getting quite rosy just in the few hours she'd spent wandering around Diagon Alley today. She wasn't really there for any particular reason, just trying to get out of her godforsaken workshop to see the world again.

Since her defenselaces* were becoming so popular, Claire decided to make a ring-version of it, and had spent several weeks doing so. It was weirdly difficult to transfer the charms she'd cast onto a smaller object - for some reason she hadn't been able to get it just right. Finally she had and Claire was wearing it out on the town when it became affixed to her finger. On the ring was a dinosaur who she really didn't want to make angry, so she was doing the best she could, but it wouldn't budge.

Finally, while nearly breaking her finger in the process, the ring flew off her finger and pegged a guy right in the noggin. Whoops. Claire headed over to him to apologize when the ring ricocheted off his head and landed on the ground, momentarily turning into a confused-looking, Brachiosaurus (not a fully grown one, thank Merlin) before turning right back into a ring. A few strangers stared but Claire could only imagine the surprise of the poor guy who'd been brained by a stray ring that turned into a large beast.

"Um... hi. Sorry 'bout that," Claire said as she picked up the ring and inspected it. "Lil' guy's still in the testin' phase."

*defenselaces = animal-shaped charm on a necklace. can grow up to 50 times in size depending on the size of the threat to you

Iggy had been looking at some new arrivals at Flourish and Blotts.  It wasn't what he needed to be buying, but it never hurt to be prepared for the next time he needed a potion.  When he turned to go into the shop, he was hit in the head with something.  Which then turned into some kind of dragon he'd never seen before.  "What the hell!"

In the moment it took for him to get his wand out though, the creature had disappeared, leaving only a ring on the ground.  Which made more sense with what had hit him.  It certainly hadn't felt like a small dragon hit him.

"What were you testing?  Your aim?  Cause I think you've got it down."  He said while rubbing the spot the ring had hit him.  It didn't so much hurt as it stung a bit.  He wasn't accustomed to being hit in the head with things.  "What is it?  What's with the dragon?"

Claire was impressed by how quick the dude was with his wand, respecting his response to fight or flight. Put in the same situation, Claire wasn't so sure she'd act so cool. Glancing up at his forehead, Claire noticed that there was a red welt. Well, unless he had a concussion, Claire imagined the guy would probably be fine. He'd just have a rather awkward bruise on his noggin.

"It's not a dragon- it's a dinosaur, very similar things though," Claire explained. This guy must've been wizard born and bred. Claire's father was a squib, so he'd always been interested in muggle culture and thusly Claire was exposed to muggle stuff throughout her life. She was often inspired by them for her line of inventions. "I invent pranks, gags, the like, and this guy's supposed to grow up to 500 times in size if you're in need of defendin', but-" Claire examined the ring, now feeling wary about putting it back on her finger. "-Usually I make 'em in necklaces, and for some reason, rings are tricker."

She looked at his welt again and felt bad that she hadn't said anything. "Ye aright, though, mate? Ye might have a bit o' a shiner there." Her eyes gestured to the spot where he'd been nabbed by the ring.

"Sure, dinosaur then.  If you say so."  Despite an interest in muggles, and doing great in Muggle Studies, Iggy had never been particularly convinced that what juggles called dinosaurs weren't just dragons.  He rubbed his forehead again, it felt warm, like an ugly welt.  Which just went perfect with the nicks already adorning his face.  Maybe the potion he'd bought for the cuts would get rid of the welt, since it now looked like his razor had been cursed rather than just losing its enchantment.

"Doesn't seem much like a gag or a prank."  Iggy commented.  "Might work better for a prank than defendin' though, since even 500 times bigger wouldn't be that much bigger would it."  He was trying to do the math in his head, but no matter how he worked it out, it didn't seem that big.  "Put the ring on and it turns into a dr—dinosaur...could be fun."

He saw her look at his forehead again before asking if he was okay.  "I'll be fine.  If this potion," he held up the bag in his non-wand hand, "doesn't get rid of it, my family will think I got into a fight."  Or he'd make sure to visit Morgan first to avoid worrying his mother.

"Wait, you have necklaces for defense?  You got one on you?  How many galleons?  That'd be perfect for my aunt." Iggy smiled, he wouldn't have to shop anymore.  Or at least he wouldn't have to shop for other people anymore.  He might as well stop in at Reducto while he was in Diagon.  Wait, she'd said she was testing the rings, so did the necklaces actually work?

"They do work though, right?"

Whoops. The guy had a welt on his forehead, where he'd received the blow. Well, what's done is done, so Claire decided to move on. "Sorry 'bout tha'," Claire said, a bit mumbly. She was still a bit child-like about apologizing in the sense that she was a little shy about it. The guy didn't look too vexed by the injury, though. He had a few other scrapes on his face.

"Well, the idea's to trick yer enemies. It tends to be a bit shockin', anyway," Claire shifted her weight. The guy wasn't mad he'd been attacked by her ring, but at least he was being somewhat nice about it. Even if he didn't fully get her products, he was curious about them.

"...My family will think I got into a fight.... Wait, you have necklaces for defense? You got one on you? How many galleons? That'd be perfect for my aunt."

Luckily, in her bag, Claire kept a bunch of her products in her bag at all times. It was always good to have her things on her, so she cast a spell on all her bags and kept a bunch of stuff in them. "I've got a bunch in here," Claire patted her bag. "Tell you what. Since I nabbed ya, I'll give ye one on the house." She dug through her bag and fished out a bat-shaped defenselace. She tossed it over to the guy before her. "Name's Claire, by the way. McByrne. An' of course they work!" Claire was so confident in her work that she used them herself. The ring was just.... not finished yet.

When the woman, Claire it seemed, offered him one on the house, Iggy held back a comment that was less than polite.  He had after all been her test subject so a free necklace was certainly warranted.  But he tried not to make a habit of being rude to people who were about to give him something for free.  He caught the necklace she tossed to him.  It had a bat on it, not what he'd have chosen but it would do.

"I wasn't accusing you or anything.  Just the ring obviously has some issues."  He said as way of explanation for the comment about whether it worked or not.  "Iggy Prewett.  Pleasure to, well mostly a pleasure to meet you.  Knocks to the head aren't my preferred way of shopping but this," he held up the necklace, dangling from his hand, "is perfect for my aunt's birthday.  Which is perfect for me since I had no idea what I was going to get her."

Opening the bag with his earlier purchases, Iggy placed the necklace carefully inside.  "You got a shop with more stuff?"

Claire felt semi-guilty for yelling at this guy about the necklace. She got a little defensive about her products, particularly when she was frustrated with one. Like this ring, for example. What was it's issue?! She wondered if it was the animal she'd chosen. Maybe this guy Iggy was right - dragons might be easier to get on a bloody ring.

"Yes, well, the rings are a new endeavor," Claire said lamely. "I need ta' try a different animal or somethin'. But the bat, he's a good one. 'Specially if ye like staying up late at night." This was apparently for his aunt. "If yer aunt comes across any vamps you'll be set. Unless, do vampires actually turn into bats?" Claire had never met one, and she knew this guy couldn't be one because it was the middle of the day. Unless that was just a myth too. It was probably pretty stupid of her to admit this in front of what was essentially a stranger, but Claire had trouble filtering herself most of the time.

"You got a shop with more stuff?"

If she was being honest with herself, that was really the dream, but Claire didn't like thinking about the future. She wasn't even financially stable enough to make rent every month on her flat, never mind a shop. "I sell 'em at Zonko's," Claire told him. "I'm the manager there." It was a pretty responsible-sounding title, at least. "Ye, know, over in Hogsmeade? I live there, but I'm thinkin' o' movin'." Again, Claire was having difficulty filtering herself. She was thinking of moving to London, though.
