The year at Hogwarts was slowly coming to an end, and that would signify the end of Edolie Fern's first year teaching Ancient Runes. It had been a whirlwind for sure - a new experience that she would always cherish. There were moments she'd like to leave out: her fumbling first few days that she'd neglected to plan; the blushing, giggling fifth-year boys who'd realized her top was see-through before she did; the students who were failing, no matter what she tried to do to help them. Luckily, she bounced back quickly. It was all part of the experience, though, and that helped Edie feel better about the mishaps. There were plenty of good moments to make up for the bad ones, as it were.

Edie was naturally an early riser - she rose with the sun, and so the fact that her first class was an early one worked well for her. She had time to drink some tea and eat some yogurt with granola and fruit while having a chat with the house elves before heading to her classroom to prepare for her classes. They were already on Medieval Runes, having just wrapped up her segment on Younger Futhark. Of course this was all fascinating to her, but she had trouble perceiving her students' interest in the different runes and their histories. For every bad egg there was a passionate learner, so it was difficult to tell.

It was later in the day and Edie was pretty tired now. She wished she could get through a day without needing a gigantic cup of tea with sugar, but the sugar was necessary. She couldn't bring herself to try coffee - she didn't know what horrors it would do to her body. She sipped her tea as she wandered back into her classroom, which was still devoid of students. She didn't really mind if her students were a bit late so sometimes they took their chances.

Prior to Hogwarts, Edolie hadn't had much teaching experience, to be honest. Since arriving, though, she felt she developed quite a knack for it -- she figured out, after those first few horrific classes, that you needed to do a bit of planning. Oddly enough, students could tell when you were unprepared (just as well as you could tell when they were unprepared themselves). Once she started to plan, it had been relatively smooth sailing. She hoped, anyway. Using her wand so she wouldn't have to get chalk dust on her hands, Edolie wrote on the board: Intro to Medieval Runes and then sat in her chair, looking over the notes she had.

The younger students would be mainly focusing on the origins and history of the runes. She discussed mythology quite a bit with them, as such stories were crucial for translating and reading runes. Edolie wasn' sure the 4th years were quite ready to translate entirely on their own, but Edie did have several artifacts for them to observe and to attempt to translate. This chapter of the curriculum would be a telltale sign of whether they'd have a successful future in Ancient Runes.
