Physical Description:
Rowan has bright red hair that typically falls in ringlets. It's fairly long, and as such is often tucked back or pulled up.She has dark brown eyes that were corrected with glasses before she found out she was a witch, but are now corrected magically.
Rowan is short, standing at only 5'2". She's curvy and a bit round, with her legs a bit longer than her torso. She has a Nordic background and as such has fair skin and a smattering of freckles.
At work and in public she typically wears robes and dresses. However on her own time she prefers to change into more muggle clothing like leggings and long shirts.
Personality Description:
Rowan is a passionate person, and her passion both aids and hinders her. At times, her firey attitude allows her to pursue her interests, and stand up for the things and people she cares deeply about. However, it can also make her temperamental, judgmental, and moody. She is sometimes easily offended, and is known to hold grudges when someone truly upsets her.
Rowan has a deep love of runes, music, and writing, and considers the three her most beloved hobbies. She was lucky enough to make runes a full time part of her life. She grew up in a house full of music, and as such gained an admiration for it from an early age. She is often found humming, singing, or playing the cello. Her love of this and of writing means that sometimes she becomes distracted and loses touch with reality, as she is off somewhere in her own head.
Rowan loves magic and was delighted to discover she had capabilities she never could have imagined. However, unlike some muggle-borns, she was never naturally gifted. While she certainly isn't bad at most forms of magic, she isn't brilliant. She had been interested in the muggle form of runes when she was a little girl, and thus it only made sense for her to connect with the subject as an adult. She finds the connection between her two worlds comforting and since she began seeing patterns with Ancient Runes, the rest of her magic has in fact improved.
History:
Rowan grew up outside of Dublin, Ireland. She has a mother named Bridget and a father named Simon. She also has a younger sister named Aoife who is three years younger than Rowan. When Rowan was nine, she accidentally hurt Aoife quite severely, and Aoife spent several months in the hospital due to her wounds. It was a tense period for Rowan's family, as her mother blamed Rowan entirely for what had happened to Aoife. Even after Aoife returned from hospital, Bridget held Rowan at a distance. Rowan's father did his best to maintain a relationship with his elder daughter, but had little time to do so, as busy as he was with work.
Things took a turn for the better when Rowan received her letter from Hogwarts. A professor visited her home a few days letter, to explain to Rowan's parents what it meant for their daughter to be a witch. Only then did Rowan and her parents understand that what had happened to Aoife had indeed been a complete accident, caused by Rowan's uncontrolled and temperamental magic. Bridget was finally able to treat Rowan more kindly, and the last few months before Rowan left for Hogwarts were exciting, with the whole family helping her get ready.
Rowan was sorted into Ravenclaw, where she did quite well. She entered Hogwarts at the same time as Harry Potter and many others, but never really crossed paths with them. Three years later, Aoife too received a letter from Hogwarts. Despite the girls wanting desperately to be in the same house, Aoife was instead sorted into Hufflepuff. Nonetheless, the two girls loved being at Hogwarts together. Rowan kept to herself for most of her Hogwarts years, more interested in her studies and music than making friends or dating anyone.
Rowan would have liked to have stayed and fought during the Battle of Hogwarts, but after what happened to Aoife when they were girls, Rowan refused to let her little sister be placed in harms way again. She escaped the castle during the beginning of the fight with Aoife, and instead tried to help anyone who managed to make it out, safely away from the castle.
Rowan did very well on her NEWTS, recieving O's in Transfiguration, Charms, and Herbology, and EEs in Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Soon out of school, Rowan began her three year training to become an Auror. It was a long and arduous experience, where Rowan often made mistakes. She sometimes considered giving up and finding a career that she might find easier, however after seeing what Voldemort and his Death Eaters had done, she was determined to complete her training and help the Aurors stop Dark Wizards from hurting people. Rowan successfully completed her training program when she was 20 and after that she became an Auror for the Ministry of Magic, alongside her former peers Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
As an Auror, Rowan takes her job very seriously. She wants to see people brought to justice, and swiftly. She's always felt a bit awkward about the chain of command and being bound to a rigid order, so whenever possible she prefers to work alone.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
Rowan worked hard during her last few years of school, despite the chaos which surrounded Hogwarts and Harry Potter. She earned high marks in her NEWTS and entered the Auror program after encouragement from several of her professors. Her strongest skill outside of the required work is still Ancient Runes, which she studies frequently to see how they might play into a current case.
Writing Sample:
Rowan nodded in understanding. Unfortunately, for all of Hogwarts' merits, there were still plenty of students who wouldn't be at all ashamed to steal things from their fellow classmates, and most students had at least one item stolen from them during there time here. "It's unfortunate students feel the need to play these types of pranks. To call it a prank even is a bit too fair, " Evelyn commented, shaking her head. "Perhaps the student simply misplaced the book, after all, I know I'm always losing my own belongings. I end up placing them all over, in drawers, notebooks...I think my cat gets into them sometimes and runs off with quills and the like." Rowan cut herself off, to allow her fellow professor to continue.
"Well, with NEWTS just around the corner, I hope my students are hard at work. Some of them had better get serious if they want a prayer of passing. Of course, some people simply like to terrify the poor things," Rowan added, rewarding her companion with a rueful grin. "Heaven knows some of my professors terrified me when i was a student. Severus Snape? I was petrified by him when I first got here. Course I got over it quick enough when us Ravenclaws realized he hated Gryffindor most of all. "
Rowan hadn't known what to make of the man even after all the years attending his classes. She wasn't one of those few who argued that she'd known he was innocent all along, or any such rubbish. But she had been smart, and quiet, and taken decent notes in his class. That had been enough for her to get by without causing much of a stir around Snape one way or another. She'd been just fine with that; anyway, she had gotten along very well with some of her other former professors, especially Bathsheda Babbling. She had adored Rowan's love of Ancient Runes.
Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Rowan is a hot tempered and passionate witch who has a deep love for Ancient Runes, writing, and music. She can be easily angered, but is also incredibly loyal to those who earn her trust. She can be found day dreaming from time to time, however she still manages to connect with the people around her when it matters.
