Inheriting a strong, rural English facial structure to offset his mother’s Greek genes, Waldo’s features could best be described as prominent – prominent nose, prominent brow, prominent forehead – and yet, coexisting amongst these features are Waldo’s gentle, hazel, almond shaped eyes (they appear smaller because of their neighbors, but they are not extraordinarily small.) As for features he was not born with, Waldo insists on maintaining an active growth (it ranges from a garden to a forest) of beard. Waldo’s body isn’t exactly the picture of a Grecian Adonis, but it is not repulsive either. Standing at 6’3”, Waldo’s height makes him stand out in a crowd and creates an appearance of lankiness, which, in a sense, is not wrong. Waldo is lanky, but his Quidditch athleticism in his youth created strong, muscular arms that have not yet disappeared under the pressures of advancing age. Upon his arms, and his neck actually, Waldo bears a myriad of tattoos acquired during the summer months he spent in Greece as a teenager.Waldo has never really struggled with his self-esteem, not so much because he sees himself as perfect, but more so because he has never felt a need to criticize himself; his time, he has always felt, is better used attending to other tasks in his daily life. He dresses well, but his outfits are not varied, and in fact become quite stale. He enjoys wearing vests, suspenders, and bow ties and enjoys sticking to earthy, dusty colors when it comes to outfit color schemes. His voice is gruff and a deep smoker’s baritone, and has been described by others to be like “velvet chocolate.” He doesn’t really understand what people hear in his voice, but he doesn’t mind the compliments and doesn’t shy away from indulging giggly 5th year girls when they ask him to “say something, anything!” Because of his smoking habit, he smells at times of tobacco but this is usually masked by scents of sage and a myriad of incense used for divining.Personality Description: Waldo is an academic at heart, yes, he dabbled in sports as a Hogwarts student, but he was always happiest in the library – this coupled with his gift of Divination made for a pretty lethal blow to Waldo’s social life, for this reason Waldo isn’t the greatest people person. That is, he loves to make friends, but he can be a little socially awkward at times and can be known to say the wrong things at the wrong times. His bluntness has gotten him into trouble more than once, but it also makes Waldo an honest advisor to his friends and his colleagues. In order to counteract his (not so) “self”-proclaimed social awkwardness Waldo took on drinking as a teenager, however, unlike his peers, Waldo’s drinking continued into his adult years. Waldo’s drinking reached alcoholic levels and continued that way for a few years until the death of his paternal grandfather (cirrhosis of the liver) led him to quit cold turkey and instead take up smoking (not much a difference, but don’t tell him that.) Waldo now only drinks on occasion at parties, and when he does, he unfortunately sometimes goes a little overboard (and then feels horrible about it.)Waldo is a wonderful professor, although he teaches one of the most scoffed at courses at Hogwarts, he still teaches with an intense passion and absolutely loves his job and his students. He is incredibly warm and caring and is always available to help students through difficult times if they so request it or need it. Although Waldo is at times a little spacey it’s not so much that he’s an airhead but more that he frequently gets lost in his theories and visions of the future. All in all, Waldo Lundy is a good guy and a vastly talented seer.History: Waldo Lundy, first and only child of Ernest Walter Lundy and Sibylle Lundy (née Sibylle Pythia) was one of the few things for which Sibylle had never planned. Sibylle, a bright, and talented graduate of Hogwarts had longed to escape her mother’s grip, which to her, seemed oppressive, and had decided to not return to Greece upon her graduation. Instead, the young witch rented out an apartment in London with a few of her friends from school and pursued a career as a Mediwizard at St. Mungo’s hospital. This “plan” worked out beautifully for Sibylle until she fell in love with the writer (who she later learned was a squib) that lived across the hallway of her flat – Ernest Walter Lundy. Long story short, Sibylle became pregnant out of wedlock (although this was fixed shortly after Waldo was born, and Sibylle and Ernest are still happily married) and was forced, by her mother, to move back to Greece until the child (Waldo) was born. (“No, grandchild of mine will be born outside of the motherland, bring the father if you must, but I’m serious Sibylle, he will be born here!”) After Waldo was born, Ernest insisted that his son be raised in his hometown of Amesbury. Sibylle’s mother, Delphina, was at first reluctant to allow this, but was swayed after Ernest and Sibylle promised that Waldo would spend half of his scholastic summers in Greece. And so it was, Ernest bought a small cottage right outside of Amesbury and stayed mostly at home, creating a thriving garden and orchard, as well as focusing on his writing, while Sibylle remained employed at St. Mungo’s (traveling back and forth from work through the Floo Powder network.) Waldo was a happy child, and grew up in a happy home – he was also exceptionally smart (his father was a writer, and his mother was a mediwizard after all) and learned to read at a young age. His grandmother Delphina was also actively involved in his pre-schooling childhood, because she had “a feeling” that Waldo was the grandchild that would inherit her “gift.”The gift Delphina was speaking of, of course, was the gift of prophecy. The Pythia family of Delphi came from a long-term line of seers (“the Oracle at Delphi”) and the power, Delphina had figured out through her studying, always skipped a generation and switched genders between each seer. Besides these patterns, Delphina also had a hunch… after all, she had once prophesized in her younger days, From the Healing Womb, with Monday as Father, born again every fourth year, shall the Pythia’s gift be found, the first line she now took to mean Sibylle’s profession, the second line to represent the French translation of the name “Lundy” to Monday, and the third line to mean the leap year on which Waldo was born. For these reasons, she felt that Waldo was to be the next seer, and for these reasons she wanted to pass on all the knowledge she had acquired over her lifetime. And so, when Waldo’s letter to Hogwarts arrived on Waldo’s 11th birthday, not only was the whole family relieved that he was not a squib, (his father was on after all) Delphina was excited to pass on her family’s wand to her grandson, in hopes that he was indeed the chosen one of the generation. From the first moment that Waldo picked up his grandmother’s wand, he felt as if he had found an extension to his arm and silvery lavender sparks flew. Delphina smiled, “He’s the next Pythian seer.” Waldo, unsure of what it meant, would only begin to figure it out over his summers in Greece, but at Hogwarts, the newly inducted Ravenclaw boy did well in most of his classes, but he excelled at Divinations (much to Delphina’s delight.)During his school years, Waldo was a delightful student, getting along with his Professors better than with his peers, but he did find a niche of friends on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. Waldo was a talented, hardworking beater on the team up until his fourth year – the year of the accident. Waldo (and his teammates for that matter) would never forget the day where Waldo’s eyes rolled into the back of his head and he began to convulse so violently that he fell off his broom and shot straight towards the grass of the pitch – he broke his leg and suffered a concussion. At first, the healers (and even his mother, after they called her) believed that Waldo had suffered a seizure but Delphina put their fears to rest when she insisted that it was only the beginning stages of the manifestation of his prophetic gifts. Waldo could, at the time, not recall what he had actually seen during his “vision” but his grandmother assured him that with time, he would learn how to recall his visions once they happened. Because of the unpredictability of his visions, Waldo was forced to quit the Quidditch team – this greatly affected Waldo and caused him to recede into a darker, more melancholic space within himself during his 5th year at Hogwarts. He slowly began to enjoy himself and come out of his shell a little bit more after he met the boy that would become his first boyfriend at the beginning of the 6th year, Victor. Victor and Waldo dated into the end of Waldo’s 7th year until Waldo foretold that Victor would be “one of 50 that would die.” Waldo, foolishly, believed that by breaking up with Victor, he would be able to save him and so in order to (according to him) protect Victor, Waldo became extremely cold and bitter towards Victor until Victor broke up with Waldo. After his graduation, Waldo moved to Greece to live with his grandmother and to further his study of prophecy and Divination. He continued his studies for four years, growing exceptionally fast (it was in his blood) in his talent. All throughout these four years, Waldo would never tell anyone that he was having recurring dreams of Victor dying in a burst of green lightning. Still in love with Victor, but afraid of his visions, he tried to get in contact with Victor in order to apologize but Victor, at the time, was in another relationship and even though he forgave Waldo, he told him that he couldn’t get back together with him, lying that his job as an Auror was “too dangerous” for those surrounding him – Waldo’s prophecy came true on May 2nd, 1998 at the Battle of Hogwarts. In Greece, Waldo, aware of, but not interested in the full out war happening with Voldemort, picked up a newspaper after he saw the headline “50 Dead in Battle of Hogwarts”One of 50 that would die.The memory of the prophecy burst into his brain and he frantically scanned the newspaper for mention of Victor… unknown, unknown, unknown, Victor Scrivner… When Waldo woke up, his grandmother was holding a damp compress to his head, he hadn’t had a vision, but he had fainted from the shock of learning that the boy – no, man – he had shared a myriad of “firsts” with was now dead. Torn between cursing his “gift” or embracing it in order to attempt to live a better life Waldo attempted to stop having visions, but this only made the occurrence of his visions become more frequent. Frustrated and heartbroken, Waldo decided that he would have to embrace his visions and try to use them to help others. He had been in Greece for 6 years now, Victor had died 2 years before… it was time to help others, not hide his gift away – ignoring it, after all, had caused Victor’s death to become even more painful. It had not helped in any way. Waldo studied and studied and studied Divination, trying to understand all the different ways one could divine the future (other than through random visions and prophecies) – he visited old professors, Centaurs (that were willing to interact with humans,) expert tarot readers, tea leaf readers, oracles, etc. – Waldo’s power grew as he did, and even though he couldn’t control the frequencies of his visions or prophecies (which by this point had slowed to a trickle) he grew to become a formidable diviner through the utilization of divining tools (his tarot deck, his crystal ball, tea leaves, etc.) and was quite accurate in his exploits. However, Waldo still couldn’t bring himself to visit Hogwarts, it had been 10 years since the death of Victor and he… still… just… couldn’t. It took Waldo two more years in order to work up the emotional courage to visit his alma mater and the death place of his teenage love, however, he was sort of forced to visit Hogwarts – he had been reading tarot cards for Muggles for far too long and felt as if he needed a professional shift in his job life – and he had heard that the Professor of Divination position was open at Hogwarts, thus he wrote to the headmistress and inquired if he could take over the position. An owl arrived a few days later with a confirmation, “We always love to have alumni teach here, come to the grounds for an interview, just for old time’s sake.” The interview went well, Waldo predicted this, and he was given the position.Describe your job duties and how you go about them: As Professor of Divination Waldo is used to students sneering behind his back for being, “full of shit,” more so than other Professors but he’s used to this – being a seer from a young age, he’s received more than his fair share of comments doubting his legitimacy but he doesn’t let it phase him, he is the Professor of Divination and as such he must teach his students to the best of his abilities. Drawing from years of Pythian training, as well as concepts he’s learned from his travels focused upon searching for prophetic truths, Professor Lundy’s class is a good mix of hands-on practicals as well as historical methods and origins. (It’s his active goal to prepare his students to receive Outstandings on both their Divination OWLs and NEWTs.)Outside of the classroom Waldo is amiable but he isn’t afraid to keep students under control in a friendly but curt fashion, but he is also always available for tutoring and just listening to student’s problems.Elaborate on your expertise in your field: Waldo Lundy received Outstandings in his Divination OWLs and NEWTs, this along with his years of family seer training at the hands of his grandmothers as well as his years of traveling and speaking to experts on Divination have left Waldo Lundy exceptionally well prepared to teach Divination. He has a true passion for the subject and is constantly reading up on and trying new forms of Divination in order to teach his students. These things along with his birth-given prophetic powers of being a Seer assure that Waldo is invested in his subject and constantly trying to improve himself and his class.Writing Sample: This sample is from another character I used to play at a different site.Burmin.That name alone sent shivers down the spine of any first year Klyk; an understandable occurrence considering that Burmin was the re-animated, human skeleton that the Klyk’s tsaritza kept as a pet-servant. Most of Klyk Vampira agreed that it was incredibly impressive feat for a seventh year, but most of the Klyk also agreed that Burmin was an eerie and sometimes unwelcomed addition to the common room. This unwelcomed addition was precisely the reason that Egir found himself in the library so often. He simply did not feel comfortable enough around the skeletal assistant to be able to focus on his classwork. It was simple, if Egir was in the library, Burmin was walking around, unrestrained in the Klyk Vampira common room; it had become a bothersome, cyclical part of Egir’s experience at Durmstrang. However it wasn’t all bad, aside from the occasional teasing from more necromantically inclined classmates and the infrequent embarrassment Egir felt, he didn’t mind spending time in the library. The chairs were plush and soft and the overall attitude inside the room was conducive to working on classwork and studying. A meager fire sizzled just a few feet away from where Egir was sitting every so often producing a loud crack which Egir interpreted as signs that the flame wouldn’t go down without a fight. Normally, this wouldn’t have bothered Egir since he wasn’t one to get annoyed by such small nuisances such as dying fires but today was different. Egir had been doing some extra research and work for his Necromancy class and it was not turning out to be a pleasant experience. He felt as if the material was working against him and simply did not want to ingrain itself into his brain; the more he looked at necromantic runes, the more foreign looking they became. Crack.“That’s it,” he thought to himself as he pounded his fists into the book in front of him, “you don’t want to die yet, eh?”Egir massaged his eyes as he slowly pushed the heavy chair backwards. His robes rustled over countless pages of crinkled Necromancy “notes” that Egir had thrown to the floor in moments of frustration. Moving his robe out of the way Egir kneeled in front of the fire. He looked around until finally his eyes found the ornate bellows and a large, dry piece of pine. Egir picked up the bellows as he tossed the new log into the fire. Instantly, the flames licked the new piece of wood and started to engulf it; the once dying fire would live once more. Egir fumbled backwards as the heat from the now-roaring fire pulsed because of the bellow’s air stream. Sitting down in front of the reborn fire he buried his head in his arms feeling the warmth wash over him, his brain trying to process the material he had spent all morning trying to memorize. Suddenly Egir shivered. He opened his eyes and scanned the library to see where the chill was coming from. All the windows were closed… the fireplace was roaring… there was no possible way that there could be a draft. While observing the high windows he caught a glimpse of a twinkling, falling object… snow. Egir had seen so much snow in his lifetime that it would be difficult for him to not spot a snowflake, especially if the said snowflake was falling indoors. He followed the snowflake with his eyes and saw it melt onto the stone floor in front of the foreign language & tomes area of the library. He rubbed his eyes to make sure he wasn’t seeing things but still, the puddle remained and he could’ve sworn that more snowflakes were dropping from the ceiling.Sum up your character in one paragraph: Waldo Lundy, the Professor of Divination at Hogwarts, is an eccentric addition to the Hogwarts faculty. He’s a good guy, but he’s a little socially awkward. A bit of a chain-smoker, but he never smells too awful (the spices from his cologne, as well as sage and incense mix well with the tobacco smell.) He’s only 33, and he looks about that age, although some say he looks a little older – it might be the beard. His classroom can go quickly into disorder, but he’s usually able to bring it back to order by his sheer friendliness and calm demeanor. As long as your name isn’t Victor, he’ll most likely be a good honest friend and an inspiring professor. After he graduated Hogwarts, he returned to learn more at the home of his grandmother and after he felt that he had learned as much as he could from her, he traveled Europe in order to meet with as many master and practitioners of Divination as humanly possible. All these years of training have left Waldo with a very powerful grasp on his powers, but as a good academic and diviner, he knows he still has plenty to learn.Describe how the Special Ability influences their life. What do they use it for?: Waldo used to be afraid of his powers and tried to keep them locked away either in Greece, only revealing prophecies to his grandmother, or not revealing them to anyone at all. However, after he predicted the death of someone he once loved, he decided that he would begin to use his powers to help others understand their future, in order that they live a more fulfilling life and they not leave anything undone – like he had failed to do.His powers have allowed him to become a powerful diviner through the utilization of material objects, and even though at times his visions scare him, he has started to let people know of any or all of visions that he’s had that pertain to them.Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special Ability: Waldo’s visions by nature are usually silent. During a vision he begins to violently convulse and his eyes roll to the back of his head, he usually falls onto the floor from wherever he is (which can be, as you imagine, very dangerous) however through years of training with his grandmother, he has acquired the ability to speak of what he sees in his visions during his visions. When he does speak, his voice becomes extremely deep, but crystal clear and booming; anyone in the proximity that hears him could possibly become frightened by the spectacle. These physical manifestations only occur during a true vision and they are completely random and Waldo cannot induce or avoid these visions. After a vision, Waldo usually feels extraordinarily weak and doesn’t stop feeling weak until he sleeps that night. However, Waldo is also able to divine the future utilizing objects such as tarot cards and crystal balls, and in these cases (if he is not under a trance) he appears completely normal and looks as if he is just talking to someone.Lastly, Waldo is able to see visions while he is sleeping, and if this occurs, his eyes open, but if one is witnessing this, they only see the whites of his eyes. During a sleep-vision (as Waldo grew to call them) he doesn’t violently shake or anything, and is instead usually quite peaceful. Once his vision is done (in the form of a dream) Waldo’s eyes close and he continues sleeping. During a sleep-vision, Waldo doesn’t feel physically affected at all – it is as if he was only dreaming. However, Waldo knows it was a sleep-vision, because he does not dream otherwise, and thus, any dream he receives by nature must be a sleep-vision. Skip to next post

Skip to next post
Special Ability Request: Waldo Delphos Lundy, Seer Reply #1 on April 30, 2014, 10:07:00 PM Special AbilityCharacter Name: Waldo Delphos LundyAge: 33Character Biography: http://absitomen.com/index.php?topic=15781.0Do any of your other Characters have Special Abilities?: NoIf Yes, then Please provide their name and a link to their bio: Special Ability: SeerWhat level is this ability at?: AdvancedAt what age did your character gain this ability?: BirthHow did they learn or hone this ability?: Waldo hails from a long line of Grecian Seers (they even say that their bloodline hails as far back to the ancient Oracle of Delphi) for this reason, once Waldo’s grandmother figured out that he was destined to become the next year she made her daughter (Waldo’s mother) that she would send Waldo to her home in Greece every summer in order to teach her grandson all about his prophetic ability and how to use it.These summers as well as many years of Divination classes at Hogwarts provided Waldo with a very advanced groundwork in order to hone his powers.
