[Mar 31 - ] Curious Creatures [Maxwell]

Dear Sir,

My name is Ambrose Pepper, and I am a fourth year student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. For the past year and a half I've also been studying creatures, ahead of my OWL examination next school year.

I read about the Magizoo Project through some articles in the Daily Prophet, and thought you may be able to answer my query about demiguises.

I have studied that the demiguise is able to make itself invisible and if we are to see them, we have to be trained, but the books I could obtain were very scant on information on how someone trains to see a demiguise. Would you be able to explain, or point me in the direction of some books that could help?

Secondly, because it takes training to see a demiguise, does this apply to their shed hair? We had a debate on how caring or healing these animals must be incredibly difficult because of their abilities, and I wondered how this could be overcome.

I am sorry if you cannot answer these questions, but after reading about the project you all seemed to be a most respected authority on such matters. I really hope to improve my studies so that in the future I might prove myself a viable candidate to work with you.

Yours faithfully,

Ambrose Pepper

Dear Mr. Pepper,

It seems you know who I am, but I will introduce myself regardless. I am Maxwell Macduff, the head of the Project; I'm glad to hear you view the MP as an authority on the creatures in its care. The demiguise is a fascinating creature - one of my personal favourites, in fact. The following information should answer your queries:

My highest book recommendation on developing the skills to see a demiguise would be The Demiguise Observed by Samiha Ali. There are spells used to track if you're hoping to view one in its natural environment, but when presented with an invisible demiguise, there is a concept of "double seeing," which is theoretically difficult to many wizards; this book describes the process masterfully, though it would still take a lot of practice.

I must point out that in an environment such as Hogwarts, these skills would be very difficult to develop.

As for your second query, keep in mind that the demiguise only makes itself invisible when it feels threatened. While it feels threatened by most living creatures, including witches and wizards, the demiguise has been known to reveal itself to familiar faces. Of course, it would take weeks of working with and around a demiguise before it would feel at ease. The Magizoo Project is an environment where the staff, including our clinic workers, can interact with the demiguise on a daily basis. So, healing and caring for them is not a problem for MP staff.

In addition, there are certain magical artefacts capable of revealing the demiguise even in its invisible state. I cannot say much on these artefacts - they are carefully controlled to prevent excessive hunting - but the Project has a few to enable untrained visitors to see them.

Hopefully I was able to answer your queries sufficiently. It's always a pleasure to speak with students pursuing an education of magical creatures, so feel free to contact me if you are ever in need of further information or clarification.

Wishing you the best with your studies,

Maxwell Macduff

Dear Mr Macduff,

Thanks ever so much for writing back to me about demiguises. I am at home for a little while we have a Spring holiday at Hogwarts, so I have not yet been able to obtain the book you suggested. Hopefully Mr Morgan will be able to help me find it, though he is Head of Slytherin, whereas I'm a Gryffindor, so I don't think he likes me much.

I don't think there are any demiguises at Hogwarts for me to try and 'see', Sir, though perhaps there are and I just can't 'see' them after all. I suppose they are a little like thestrals, which I can't see, but my classmate Moira can.

Either way, thank you again for your help in identifying how this happens, and I look forward to one day being able to glimpse a look at these magnificent beasts.

When return to Hogwarts after our holiday, I think we have a careers day. I am looking into a possible career in working with magical animals, as this is my best subject at Hogwarts at the moment. Has the project been invited to attend? I can ask my Care of Magical Creatures teacher, Professor Donovan to invite you if not?

Thanks,

Ambrose Pepper

Dear Mr Pepper,

Coincidentally, I've just accepted an invitation to your Career Fair. I will be coming to represent the Project, so hopefully we'll get the chance to meet in person. Until then, have fun during your break! And once you get back, continue working hard - good grades will definitely pay off.

Sincerely,

Maxwell Macduff
