    Physical Description:
While a man long passed his prime physically, Roland remains a bright and incredibly keen mind. Beneath his kindly, wrinkled face is a shrewd strategic mind that played the politics of America's magical government for years whose rise was stopped solely of his own volition.

A powerful wizard and skilled politician, Roland Dylanis the Ninth stands as a commanding height of 6'3" and keeps himself in the best shape he can to counter the effects of his aging. His facial appearance and demeanor is evocative of the American Bald Eagle: Predatory, focused, and always calculating.

His voice matches his deceptive appearance. While, at first glance, Roland looks like a kindly old grandfather, closer examination shows that he's much like the legendary bird of prey. This carries to his voice, which at first sounds rather soft and a bit gruff, but deeper down one can oftentimes find a mark of general contempt and just the slightest hint of condescension and snark toward fellow human beings.

While he was born in Texas, Roland's voice carries little to no accent whatsoever that one might expect. While one might catch a bit of a Texas Twang or mannerism in his voice, especially if he's in more casual settings, for the most part he maintains a dead-neutral accent, very clipped and no-nonsense with delivery and intonations, for the most part. This carries over into his public speaking skills, where he maintains his neutral accent as a means of better appealing to his audience and projects himself through sheer force of charisma.

Roland is almost never seen wearing anything short of a crisp, well-trimmed suit, whether it be for business or formal occasions, complete with a matching walking stick to complete the ensemble. When he's not wearing those, he'll be wearing a button-up shirt and a pair of slacks, with jeans only making fleeting, rare appearances.

    Personality Description:
To describe Roland Dylanis IX, patriarch of the ancient bloodline, is to describe something that is simultaneously easy to pickup upon yet hard to understand. At the core of his being, Roland Dylanis is an ambitious and pragmatic, to the point that some would say cruel, man. Born into a prestigious family, it was Dylanis' ambition to rise to the Governor of Magic's office and then make sure that a Dylanis would hold this office from then on, though he was forced to abandon those plans later on. Or for now.

To him, things like emotional attachment and connections are second to how the person in question can best serve his purposes and objectives. That is, unless those same attachments could somehow serve him better. When raising Robert, his son, he was raising and training his successor first and his son second, much like the same case for his grandson Roland X.

    History:
In the Dylanis family, there is an ancient legend passed through the generations that they were descended directly from one of the Twelve Companions of Charlemagne: Roland, the greatest Paladin of them all.

In keeping with this claim, the name Roland carries such significant importance in the Dylanis bloodline that it has only been granted to boys born to perform great deeds in this world. Roland graduated at the top of the Red Rocks Academy class and immediately delved into a career in the American Government of Magic. In time, he rose to head of the Auror Office and eventually the Head of Magical Law Enforcement and, many believed, eventually the Governship itself when the time came.

During this time, he fathered a son: Robert Dylanis, who he saw as his successor in his grand plan. Robert, much like Roland, was a gifted and skilled wizard, if not up to Roland's incredible standards, and was rising quickly in the Auror ranks when he abruptly retired after a hunt for a renegade pack of werewolves turned sour and left Robert gravely injured. Roland's fury was incomprehensible and the father-son argument tumultuous that night, as Roland's plans hinged on Robert following in his footsteps. Robert, wanting to escape from his father's poisonous ambitions, elected instead to officially retire while taking an unofficial assignment from the Government to monitor the Second Voldemort Crisis in Great Britain, which had drawn their eye.

Roland continued his service to the Government faithfully, waiting for his moment to seize the Governor's office, when he was contacted by his estranged son one night and learned that not only was Robert on the run from a fast-closing Ministry of Magic, but also that Robert had married and fathered a grandson: Roland Aderyn Dylanis the Tenth! Robert was pleading for Government protection so that he could get his wife and young son to safety in America and away from the threat of the Death Eaters, which Roland, uncharacteristically, immediately agreed to and made all the appropriate arrangements. The night that Roland went in person to retrieve his family from Britain, Robert's home fell under attack from a large party of Snatchers led by Fenrir Greyback, who brutally murdered Robert and Sian and would have infected the infant Roland if not for the older Dylanis' perfectly-timed interference and rescue.

After taking young Roland back to America, Grandpa Roland contemplated and calculated an interesting, and potentially incredible future for the Dylanis family. After the Voldemort Crisis was ended in Great Britain, a scandal rocked the American Magical Government and the media when Roland Dylanis the Ninth, much like his son years before, abruptly announced his retirement as Head of Magical Law Enforcement, officially because he wanted to raise his grandson in the land of his birth and away from the tumultuous American political scene. Unofficially, Roland Dylanis had a brand new plan in mind for his family, one that would require him to give up his pursuit of the Governor of Magic position...at least for now. For now, he had the grand opportunity to correct the flaws in how he'd raised and trained Robert. For now, he had a new canvas upon which his ambitions could be fulfilled through in time: Roland Aderyn Dylanis X, his grandson.

Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Retired, at least on the surface.

Even since coming to Great Britain, the fragile state of the nation recovering from a devastating war has allowed Roland Dylanis many opportunities to learn and acquaint himself with several political players in the Ministry of Magic and get himself an ear to the ground in the media and some minor influence amongst the political scene thanks to him arranging aid from America in the rebuilding process in addition to providing much humanitarian aid in the form of private donations to both individual wizards as well as the Ministry of Magic as a whole.

He makes frequent trips to London, Diagon and Knockturn Alley despite living in Swansea when he isn't training his grandson or when Rou is away at Hogwarts. There, he mingles often with the magical community there, including less than savory folks who provide him information that his acquaintances at the Ministry cannot.

Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
Roland Dylanis IX was given the venerable name of his family because of the signs seen at birth that he would be a truly prodigious wizard. With his natural talents, he was a top student at Red Rocks Academy and at a young age seen by many as the next, and potentially one of the greatest, Governor of Magic. His abrupt retirement despite seemingly being on the cusp of election caused a stir amongst the American wizarding community, with rumors saying that it's because he was wanting to avoid an official inquiry by the Government into his potential involvement in Robert Dylanis' death, the details of which had been heavily kept under wraps by the Ministry of Magic in the aftermath of the Second Crisis.

In addition to his magical talents, Roland is also a very charismatic and endearing individual, able to make friends quickly using his skill at conversation and a nice bit of gold when that won't do the trick.

    Writing Sample:

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Roland Dylanis IX is a man of ambition, power, and no small measure of wealth to back both of them up. The only reason he's not sitting in the Governor of Magic's chair right now is because he chose not to take it, knowing full well that choosing to raise Rou first would set his ambitions back for some years but not stop them entirely. He is a man of taste and finery, but at the same time he's not afraid to get himself down and dirty with the criminal rabble if it means fulfilling his objectives, as his time as an Auror rising through the ranks necessitated such things.

He is a man who would make an invaluable ally and a ruthless, horrific enemy.
