Eamon Slant
67, Retired “Soldier”

Face Claim: Tommy Lee Jones

When he isn’t out hunting, patrolling the estate or
drinking with old “friends” down at the pub, Eamon
can be found at home, in front of the telly with a cold
one as he whittles away to Keeping Up Appearances
or in the company of Erzulie Jones, despite a deep
suspicion of magic
.

Other Notes: 6’5”, muscular, faster than he looks,
owns a gun named Marilyn. ‘Slant’ was just a
nickname until he had it legally changed in his
                mid-30s (German/Polish in origin, formerly
                ‘Burkhardt’). Speaks Polish and Russian.

Memories that Break and Bind Us

A man of few words and even fewer smiles, Gracie’s
grandfather is a grim, taciturn man with little
patience for the flashy and capricious. After more
than twenty years of explosions and gunfire– and
the undercurrent of agonized screams– he prefers
his quiet undisturbed
, interrupted only for good
reason. He dislikes – and distrusts – small talk;
personal questions are viewed as little more than
roaches.

Eamon is an accomplished hunter; the wall above
their fireplace is covered in mounted heads. They
have played an integral part in teaching Gracie her
letters, as there is something about empty, marble-
like eyes that jogs one’s memory. He has also taught
her tracking, trapping, and a variety of other
survival skills in the event she finds herself without
a wand.

Eamon settled down and married his high school
sweetheart
, Agniezka Biala, in 1979. St. John’s
was her ancestral home. He does not speak of her,
if he can help it.

His relationship with his estranged daughter, Gracie’s
mother, is strained beyond repair; he breathes a quiet
sigh of relief every time she leaves, and warns his
granddaughter every time she’s in town. He does not
begrudge Gracie’s other grandparents of her neglect
because it’s kept them far away from her, and the
damage has already been done.

Erzulie Montenet-Jones

Wily, secretive, and innovative, Erzulie (née Afamdi-
Montenet)
runs a popular diner, Miss Charlotte’s, that
serves as a cover for Maison Verte, her apothecary. As
skilled a brewer and herbologist as she is a cook, her
expertise lies in magimycology and carnivorous plants,
and guards her secrets jealously.

Since the death of her husband, Erzulie has focused on
the apothecary, perfecting cultures and domesticating
violent vegetation
—leaving her son Tracy in the care
of his grandmother back in New Orleans. She keeps a
room for him, however, when he comes to visit, and
has extended the same courtesy to his good friend
Gracie, who she has taken under her wing.

Wise, patient, and fearless, Erzulie knows how to bide
her time
and accept things as they come, making her a
versatile character; good things may come to those who
wait, but they’re even better when one knows when to
act. With an innate sense of balance that extends past
the physical
, Erzulie knows not just who she is, but
where she is; both literally and figuratively, her sense
of direction is unparalleled.

An unregistered Animagus, her form is a golden orb
spider
, which she uses to produce the golden thread
for which it’s so famous for– and to control the colony
that which she owns. Though she currently resides
in Devon, she still mentors Gracie from afar.
