Alma Mater: Hogwarts, Hufflepuff alum
Job/Position: Dragon handler/Dragonzoologist
Wand: 10 1/16 inches, Oak, Dragon Heartstring. Supple and smooth. It is the first and only wand he's ever had.
Physical Description: Al stands at 5’10 in height, and he looks every inch. He stands straight, open, and proud. His shoulders rolled back, and facing forward. He is dexterous, with refined fine-motor skills and acute reflexes—something that is just as, if not more, important than strength when it comes to working with dangerous creatures. His movements are smooth, and even when they’re premeditated they look natural. He is an active person, and if he does not exercise or work his body regularly, he gets anxious and a bit twitchy.
He has an oval face, a wide mouth, and full lips that are usually somewhere between a resting position and a smile. His nose is wide, yet small and not very prominent. His naturally curly hair is such a dark brown that it’s nearly black. He likes to keep it short to the point where he’s nearly bald. His face is usually clean shaven, and everything about him looks neat and put into place. When he’s not working directly with dragons, you would not dare find a scuff on his shoes or stains on his clothing. He prefers to look very put together and clean. His clothes are tailored to fit him well.
Alphonse has dark eyes and heavy eyelids. Overall, his features are very kind and gentle. His body language is open, and not at all domineering or aggressive. He looks like someone who is easily approachable, even if his clothes don’t have a single wrinkle. He usually has a few fresh burns from work, as well as his fair share of old, well healed scars usually located on his arms and hands.
Personality Description: Al has always been meticulously neat. His parents never had to ask him to clean his room, because he did it himself. Clutter is his enemy—and it is easily vanquished when he’s around. When visiting others, he resists the urge to clean their house for them, as it is often viewed as rude. . He acts with compassion, duty, and honor. He strongly believes that humans and creatures are inherently good. He does not believe anyone to be above the rules—and he holds himself to that standard more than he does with anyone else. He focuses not on being successful, but on being a person of value.
He is warm and friendly, though he may act a bit standoffish if he feels like someone is being rude and inconsiderate of others. He is very bothered by people who go against certain social norms, and does his best to avoid them. Al may come off as a bit critical if he believes you are not doing things the ‘right way’ and that his way is the way things are supposed to be done. He sometimes has difficulty accepting multiple, equally productive methods to achieve the same goal. He is a hard worker, and values working hard for the betterment of himself and the creatures around him. Though he is intelligent, he succeeds in his career and elsewhere through determination and hard work, rather than his knowledge alone.
He is a huge fan of equality—a supporter of werewolf rights, human rights, house elf rights, etc. He even believes that Goblins should be able to have wands! He has a deep love for creatures. While he isn’t a huge fan of cats, dogs, toads, and rats—he’ll tolerate them and treat them with respect. Hippogriffs, dragons, thestrals, and erumpents are more his type.
Alphonse enjoys listening to popular music, theatre, and radio shows. He is very up to date on the latest in the news or within pop culture. He reads the Daily Prophet and The Quibbler the day that they’re released. While he's reading, he usually has some sort of cookie in his hand-- Al has quite the serious sweet tooth.
History: Alphonse Zephyr was born on September 24, 1974. His mother stayed at home to take care of the children, and his father worked on a potion assembly line. His older sister, Persepolis, was easy for him to look up to—their age difference always gave him the feeling that she was ‘bigger,’ and her intelligence and ambition gave her his respect. Growing up, he looked up to her—and in a way, he still does. It’s hard not to after all, she is the Minister of Magic. His home life was cozy, comfortable, and safe. While his sister was not an easy child, Al was the complete opposite. Calm, quiet, well-mannered, and usually relaxed. The only time he ever questioned the rules was when he felt like they were unfair.
Until he was sorted into Hufflepuff, he had no idea what house he’d be placed in. Gryffindor, maybe, like his parents? Or perhaps Ravenclaw, like his sister? Although he was smart and had a brave streak, he didn’t necessarily value procuring knowledge, and he was anything but reckless. He wasn’t ambitious as much as he valued hard work and loyalty. During school he was perfectly well behaved, very rarely getting into trouble. He was friendly with the other students, and loyal to those he felt close to. He worked well with animals, and Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, and Charms were his best subjects, earning top NEWTS in those three areas. He did not do well with transfiguration, runes, divination, or history, though he was passable.
When he graduated from Hogwarts, he spent several years abroad working with different magical creatures and studying them. Two years into his magizoologist training, he decided to specialize in dragons. He has worked with all different kinds of dragons from around the world, some aggressive and some a bit more docile. He has learned much over the years. After 5 years of dragon research and training (at the age of 25), Al became a dragon handler/dragonzoologist for The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. With his dragonzoologist training, he has not only handled dragons, but helped heal sick or injured ones as well. He has been with that department for ten years now, and loves his work even more every day, even if some days are rougher than others.
He has not had much in the way of romance, though the friendships and platonic bonds he’s formed with people over the years are deep and caring. In his spare time, he goes out for drinks with his friends, reads books about dragons, and keeps up on news (local and international). His work is usually active enough to fulfill his activity requirements, but when that doesn’t work he will go swimming at the local pool or go for a run.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: As a dragon handler, his job is to work directly with dragons and he is on call to scenes where dragons are involved or are causing problems. He deals with people’s ‘pet’ dragons and is also responsible for taking care of any dragon eggs that are found. His magizoologist/dragonzoologist training is the part he’s a bit more passionate about. He heals dragons who are wounded or severely ill, and investigates any sort of widespread illness that affects that population. Both jobs require their fair share of paperwork, but over the years he has grown accustomed to it and it’s not a big deal.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: Alphonse has had two years of general magizoologist training, and five years of specific dragonzoologist training and research. That is what got him the job in the first place. He has now had ten years of experience in this position.
Writing Sample: no.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Alphonse Zephyr is the most meticulous, neat, and tidy dragon handler you’ll ever meet. He values hard work and effort over natural skill, and is a strict follower of the rules except when they are unfair or oppressing a certain group. Al loves creatures, though he is particularly fond of the ones that may bite your ears
