Class Overview, Records and Protocol | Professor Di Luca on July 12, 2013, 03:55:11 AM Classroom Protocol and Code of ConductFailure to comply with the following directives will result in immediate disciplinary action. (Please keep in mind that these are all IC)Brewing and class protocol1. Students should behave in a mature and responsible manner at all times wherever volatile ingredients are stored or handled. 2. Students must follow all verbal and written instructions carefully. If you are unsure of the procedure, ask the professor for help before proceeding.3. Students should not touch any equipment or ingredients unless specifically instructed to do so.4. Students must not eat, drink, introduce foreign agents or use unnecessary charms or spells in the classroom. Wash hands thoroughly before and after participating in any brewing activities.5. Students must brew only those potions authorized by the teacher.6. Students must never enter the storeroom or preparation areas unless accompanied by or with permission from the class professor. Independent projects must be authorized by the class professor or a faculty member.7. Students must wear protective gear (dragon-hide gloves, protective eye wear where necessary) whenever volatile ingredients, heat or glassware are used by either the professor or students in the classroom. Students are expected to wear appropriate uniform attire at all times in the classroom and also avoid wearing loose or flammable clothing; long hair should be tied back.8. Students must report any incident (including all spills, breakages or other potentially hazardous reactions) to the professor immediately, no matter how insignificant it may appear. This should include all injuries such as cuts, burns or other signs of physical harm.9. Students must never remove ingredients, equipment or supplies from the classroom area.10. Students must carefully examine all equipment before each use and report any broken or defective equipment to the professor immediately.11. After use, all equipment must be properly cleaned and returned to their assigned places.12. Intentional destruction of school property is strictly prohibited.Code of Conduct1. Tardiness will not be tolerated. Class starts at 10 minutes after the hour or half hour.2. Severe absenteeism will have unpleasant consequences.2. Engagement in side conversation is forbidden.3. Disruptive behavior and misconduct are strictly prohibited.4. Failure to complete assignments on the specified time will result in point loss. (Again, all IC. Please keep in mind that she is a very strict and demanding professor.)Winning and losing pointsAttendance is mandatory and therefore shall not be rewarded with points. Failure to attend, on the other hand, will result in loss of 3 to 10 points depending on the number of absences so far. Once the clock passed ten minutes into the hour or half hour, access to the classroom will be restricted and such, tardiness past the grace period will be considered truancy.Homework assignments after the end of each class and preparation in advance for the next class are considered mandatory and so will not be earning any points. Showing up unprepared will have the consequence of losing 3 to 5 points.Assignments given in class, namely brewing, will either lose or win up to 10 points depending on the outcome of the potion. Failure to complete the assignments in time, will result in a 0 for the respective class. Answering a question may or may not win up to 10 points, depending on the accuracy and completeness of the answer. Impacting contributions to the subject discussed in class may win points.Disruptive behavior, disobedience and failure to comply with the protocol and code of conduct will result in point loss of 5 to 15 and certainly detention.GradingGrading is based on student behavior and their performance in class. Aside from the midterm and the final exam, students will receive a major project each term (either individual or as a team) and various small assignments. The final grade is made up of 50% final exam, 25% midterm and 25% class activity (which includes the term project and all assignments passed in class) per term. Failure to complete any of the smaller assignments will result in the lowering of the final grade with half a grade for each missed assignment. Retakes are allowed for any student that has not achieved a passing grade, and a chance to get a higher grade is offered to those that find themselves in good sanding in the rest of their classes.Disciplinary actionsDepending on the gravity of the offense the student might suffer verbal reprimand from the professor, with a written record of the violation maintained, point deduction, detentions, parents or legal guardians may be notified, suspension on a determined period from class with alternative work assignments. In extreme or severe cases a meeting with a legal guardian, the Headmistress and the professor will be called to decide proper disciplinary action. The worst-case scenario involves suspension from the class for the remainder of the year with alternative assignment to be provided in a supervised setting as determined by the professor.NEWT Level PotionsIt should be noted that in order for a student to advance to NEWT level Potions, they must achieve an O in their Potions OWLs. In order to keep taking the class after that, they must achieve an E as their final grades.
