[February 15] Just a Little Off Subject [Luca]

on July 08, 2013, 09:40:41 PM

February 15
After dinner

The Transfiguration is a complex task to fully complete. To transfigure a seat cushion to a porcupine takes a lot of concentration. It ...

The words of her essay didn't flow as nicely on to the parchment as it usually did for her. Transfiguration, which was already her hardest class, took the most out of her to comprehend. Both Charms and Defensive spells at least were easier to understand. Transfiguration spells were typically more complex, and required a higher amount of concentration. For that matter, she was supposed to be working on her concentration for Charms as it was.

With a short sigh, Addison brushed a piece of her hair out of her eyes as she took her eyes out of the Transfiguration book in front of her. All of this information just seemed so confusing to her. How was it that she was able to understand muggle school material without being there, but a subject like Transfiguration confused her as she would sit in class? It was a rather odd conundrum after all.

After stretching her arm for a few moments, Addison figured that it wouldn't hurt to take a break from the Transfiguration work. Maybe spending a few moments off task would lead her to better concentration later on? Taking a new piece of parchment, she started to doodle. The sketching of desk already starting to take form on the parchment.

It wasn’t often that Luca felt lazy and didn’t have the motivation to do any work, so the Ravenclaw was lying on his back on his bed, a book that was long forgotten tossed to the side. He was staring up at the ceiling, trying to figure out why he was so bored today. He could usually spend hours with his nose in a book, but today he had an itch to do something else that was making him most unproductive.

Luca rolled over on his bed and dragged himself into the common room, flopping down on a spare couch and sighing loudly. He glanced around the room and saw a familiar fourth year girl who seemed to be writing something on a piece of parchment. He didn’t really want to disturb her, whatever she was doing, but Luca was so bored.

Rolling off the seat, Luca walked over to the girl and plopped down beside her. “Hey Addison,” He said, glancing at the parchment in front of her. “What are you doing?” He asked curiously but utterly thrilled that Addison seemed to not be studying or doing any work. At least he could talk to her without feeling guilty about interrupting her study time.

It wasn't long before the desk on the parchment looked like some of the desks in the classrooms of Hogwarts. For that matter, most desks looked quite the same. Despite that fact, it was a pretty good desk in her opinion. On top of the desk, she drew several different objects. An apple in the middle of the desk, with a pot, a vase, and a glass surrounding it.

Addison was fully engrossed in the doodle that she was completing. She was focused on it a lot more than the Transfiguration work that she was procrastinating. It was certainly a good thing that she didn't doodle in class - much - otherwise, she would miss out on a lot of work.

Adding in a few more desks in the drawing, Addison didn't hear Luca approaching. It was only after he called her name, that she actually took notice of her surroundings. "Oh, hey Luca!" she greeted him, with the surprise showing in her voice. He was already looking at her parchment, which meant that he already saw what she was doing. Clearly, it wasn't schoolwork. "Just doodling a bit," she offered with a grin.

Smiling at Addison when she greeted him, Luca saw the disregarded schoolwork in front of her. It was like they were in the same dilemma, avoiding work because it was either too boring or every time you looked at it your brain would just produce… nothing.

Luca hated those days, he would sometimes get frustrated when the words he was trying to put on paper never came out right and he’d just end up staring at a blank piece of parchment for so very long, not knowing what to write. Sure, Luca wasn’t useless when it came to completing school work, but some days it just wouldn’t happen.

He glanced at Addison and offered her a smile before looking back at the parchment in front of her. Luca studied the picture she was drawing, it was really quite good. “That’s really good,” He commented, focusing back on his fellow Ravenclaw. “Any particular reason you’re drawing a desk, or was it just the first thing to pop into your head?” Luca asked curiously. He liked to know what people were thinking when they did things like sketching, did they actually contemplate about what they were going to do before they started, or did they kind of just go with the flow?

If there was one thing that Addison didn't like to do when talking to someone, it was sketching. Sure, she would talk if completing a portrait of someone. But, under most circumstances, it probably made her look a bit weird to sketch while talking. Considering how she tunes out her surroundings a lot while sketching, she certainly shouldn't be doing it while talking. Besides, it probably looked kind of disrespectful too.

So, Addison set to quickly finish her plan for her drawing. There was just one little thing that she wanted to add. It was just an outline of a spell about to hit the apple in her picture. The actual spell that it was didn't exactly matter. It just meant that when the spell hit the apple, it would splatter on the vase, pot, and glass. The vase and glass would shatter after being knocked over. While, the pot would clank to the floor with little dents in it. It was such a happy picture!

Addison sat the quill down on the table after finishing. In her mind, it was right to do so after all. She couldn't help but to smile at Luca's compliment. "Thanks. I try my best." Despite being more open with her drawings, she was still surprised to hear compliments from others about them. Her confidence hadn't really changed much.

She simply shrugged at his question on why she chose to draw a desk. "No reason really to draw the desk. I mean, you could imagine a scene like this playing out in one of the classrooms, or maybe here in the Common Room. So, I guess to help you imagine it better," she responded. It wouldn't be too hard to imagine that, after that Defense Against the Dark Arts midterm[1]

Luca watched curiously as Addison added a few last things to her sketch before setting her quill aside. He enjoyed watching people draw, Chloe would sometimes draw him and he found it quite interesting. In fact, he liked observing people sketch anything, even if it was a little bit strange. There was just something that Luca really enjoyed about it.

“Oh, don’t stop on my behalf,” Luca said, glancing between Addison and her sketch of a desk. It really was quite good and he wanted to see the end product. “I’m the one that came over here and interrupted you.” He added, offering the girl a genuine smile. If she wanted to continue then he would have no problem in it. Heck, she could even tell him to get stuffed and he’d leave her to her peace and quiet. Luca liked Addison, he thought she was a nice girl so he wouldn’t be bothered if she wanted some alone time.

Luca listened to her brief explanation of her drawing, laughing softly when she mentioned the scene playing out in a classroom or in the Common Room. “Yeah, that seems like something that would happen here,” He said with a smile and a brief nod. It was only the day after Valentine’s Day, and it seemed like such a big deal to some people, so Luca decided to ask Addison about her day. “How was your Valentine’s Day yesterday?” He asked, glancing at Addison with a smile on his face. Luca himself didn’t think Valentine’s Day was that big of a deal, but it was for many other people. And besides, he wasn’t in a relationship, so it wouldn’t seem all that great anyway.

Glancing at her sketch on the parchment, Addison contemplated Luca's last sentiment. Apparently, he didn't mind her sketching. It was completely fine with her, presuming she paid attention to what he said to her. Of course, she could pay better attention to her peers that she could to her classes. It was up to her to keep her mind with it. But, she was not one to deny an opportunity to actually draw something ...

Picking up the quill, Addison gave Luca a smile. "Thank you for the company then, it is always welcome," she added. Despite being a perfectionist, she welcomed having her friends with her. If she truthfully wanted alone time, there were places where she could go. The Ravenclaw Common Room was definitely not one of those places.

Placing the quill against the parchment again, she already started to draw in a chalkboard. She smiled and nodded to his confirmation, "Probably more often than we realize." On the topic of Valentine's Day, she simply shrugged. Her Valentine's Day was nothing special. It was on a Hogsmeade weekend, which meant even setting foot in the wizarding village meant seeing couples. To be quite honest, she didn't need another reminder that she wasn't in a relationship.

"Mine was really nothing different than any other day. Even visiting Hogsmeade was basically out of the question. How was yours?" she asked, glancing at Luca for a moment with a smile. Near the chalkboard, she started to outline a person.

Addison picked up her quill and thanked Luca for his company, making him grin happily. Luca liked being social and talking to people, but he tried his best to not intrude on people’s time if they wanted to be left alone. Addison however, seemed like she appreciated or at least enjoyed his company and didn’t express the want to be alone so he was glad.

Luca wasn’t in a relationship, nor did he have the desire to be in one. He liked to just go with the flow on those types of things and he saw no reason to push himself into a relationship because of Valentine’s Day. There were some people around the castle that got a bit down around the 14th of February, but Luca definitely wasn’t one of them. Besides, if he liked someone, he liked them and he’d probably tell them anyway, he liked to be upfront and honest.

“It was nothing special,” Luca said with a shrug. “Though all the sappy love around the place was kind of annoying after a while.” He laughed, reclining back slightly. Sure, Luca didn’t have anything against public displays of affection, but everyone had their limit and the day seemed to be quite filled with it.

With each passing moment, the figure that she was drawing looked more and more like a miniature Professor Kesali. At least, she attempted to draw in the different features of their rather eccentric Charms Professor. To be quite honest, her drawings rarely featured her different Professors at the castle. There was no reason for it, it just happened that way.

On a day like Valentine's Day, Addison was quite frankly very confused. She wouldn't deny wanting to be in a relationship. But, she wasn't running around the castle to find a relationship. So, she would stay quiet, and keep those thoughts to herself. It was much better that way than to embarrass herself. She was certainly not desperate.

Addison nodded as Luca admitted to his Valentine's Day being nothing special. "I know. It was all cute at first, but quickly became kind of redundant," she added with a smile. "Besides, did they really need one day to profess all of their love?"

Luca smiled at Addison as she spoke about Valentine’s Day. He made a noise of agreement to her comment and nodded his head. “I think Valentine’s Day has less to do with showing the person you love how much you love them, and more to do with showing other people how much you love that special someone,” He said with a shrug. Luca saw Valentine’s Day as a pointless holiday, if you love someone, shouldn’t every day be like Valentine’s Day? It was confusing.

Leaning ever so slightly towards Addison to get a better look at her drawing, Luca smiled as she began to draw features on a person in her sketch. “Is that anyone in particular?” He asked, nodding his head slightly in the direction of her drawing. Some people would call Luca nosy, asking so many questions, but he was just curious. And he liked questioning people about what they were doing.

Addison simply shrugged at Luca's guess on the meaning of Valentine's Day. "I guess. But, if I had a boyfriend, I wouldn't wait until a special day to show it. Everyday would be special enough. But, that's just my opinion anyway," she added, nearly shrugging off her own words. She was merely a fourteen year old girl, who was not well versed in relationship matters.

Giving her drawing a quick glance, she gave Luca a questionable look. "My drawing's not detailed enough?" she asked, grinning to show her joking. She made the eye patch and wisps of hair more prominent, before holding her drawing at any angle for Luca to see. "It's our Charms Professor! Professor Kesali," she stated with a smile. "Watch this!"

Taking out her wand, she pointed it at her drawing. "Evaginato moveo![1]" she exclaimed.

Her drawing suddenly animated. The spell in the drawing hit the apple, splattering the whole area with force. The vase and glass shattered, while the pot was damaged and flipped over. The miniature Professor Kesali looked on flabbergasted and in horror. Just like it was on a loop, the animation started from the spot that she originally drew again and continued on.

Listening to Addison as she mentioned what Valentine’s Day would be like if she had a boyfriend, Luca tilted his head ever so slightly to the side and considered what she said for a moment. “Good point,” He said with a nod of his head.

Luca smiled at Addison as she asked if her drawing was detailed enough before she turned it for him to get a better look. “Oh, I see now,” He said looking from Addison to the drawing with a grin on his face. She took out her wand and pointed it at the sketch and Luca looked on in excitement as it became animated

The whole thing seemed to come to life, a spell hitting the apple and causing quite a hectic scene before his eyes. “Nice,” He said with a laugh as he watched the sketch in interest. It really was, Luca wasn’t really skilled at drawing but he definitely loved doing it even if his sketches looked completely different to what they were meaning to depict. “Poor mini Kesali, he looks so shocked,” He added, taking his eyes off the drawing for a moment to smile at Addison.

Addison smiled and nodded when Luca noticed the miniature Professor Kesali. He was in the background, and wasn't exactly the clearest image on the parchment. As an artist, she had to try to express what she wanted in her art. So, if mini Kesali didn't look right, then mini Kesali had to be edited a little.

A giggle escaped Addison's lips at Luca's reaction to her work. Indeed, it was such a sight to see. It was like the spell was on a continuous loop. "I know, right? I tried to model it the best I could to his actual reactions during class. But, I can't just walk up to him to see if I portrayed him correctly. I don't think he would take too kindly to it..." she added with a smile.

"So, what do you think of it?" She asked, curious of his impression of her mini Kesali classroom chaos.

The drawing really did amuse Luca. Not only did he find the sketch itself of high quality, but the looping scene was entertaining too. Luca chuckled when Addison mentioned not being able to waltz up to Professor Kesali and test his reaction to the happenings in the now animated drawing.

It would be a fun little experiment, but no way was Luca prepared to do something like that. Sure, he liked to have fun and joke around, but not with certain people who had weapons such as detention slips at their disposal.

“It’s brilliant!” Luca said excitedly, nodding his head at Addison. “You draw really well, and the fact that you made it come life makes it all the more better,” He added, smiling at the girl. “The apple was a good choice for being splattered, but personally I would’ve chosen a watermelon or something that would make more of a mess,” Luca chuckled, shaking his head at his own comment.

Luca didn’t often see people animate their sketches, they either didn’t do it or he would get distracted and walk away before they could. “Do you always animate your drawings?”

There was a part of her mind that yearned to test out her assumption. Addison liked to learn new information. Both academically and socially. She liked to find out different pieces of information about others. Naturally, this included information about her Professors. It was just like her enjoyment in finding out about Professor Reid's and Professor Trishna's relationship. Alas, she rarely mentioned this knowledge.

But, something inside of her would love to test her theory. Professor Kesali had some of the strangest reactions to things in class. He would undoubtedly flip if she would ever try out her assumption during class. That very reaction would be priceless. To be quite honest, she wouldn't really even care about the negative repercussions of the incident, like earning herself a detention. It would certainly help to make mini Kesali more realistic!

Addison smiled and nodded at Luca's compliments. She wouldn't tire at hearing compliments of her work. It would keep her mind off of the negativity. "Thanks! I know, the movement adds more to it." At Luca's choice of using a watermelon, she giggled. "If I was trying it out with Kesali, that would definitely be an option. But, for a drawing, I decided not to go too complicated," she responded with a grin.

Addison shook her head at Luca's question. "Not all of the time, and certainly not at home. Most of what I draw doesn't really make sense to animate," she answered.
