Wand: Cocobolo wood at a length of 10 and ¾ inches. It is finished with a smooth varnish that has become dull with age, as the wand itself has been passed down through the family of Dolohov. The core of the wand is Runespoor Fang making the wand itself strong for Dark Magic, not surprising that it is from the Dolohov family. The wand is rigid and hard to work with; it has always taken time to get accustomed to the new user. If the old user is still alive the use of this wand can be catastrophic. This wand once belonged to the deceased mother of Antonin Dolohov.
Physical Description: Effie is deceivingly sweet and innocent looking. Expressive blue eyes, round pale face, shoulder length curly dark brown hair, and pouty lips gives Effie the ability to make many eat from the palm of her hand. She has a skinny body and her head may appear a bit big in proportion to the rest of her body but just adds to the cuteness. Effie is slender and weak, for added look of illness she has pale skin due to her lack of outside activities. Many will say she is sickly, but asides from her lack of colour she is relatively healthy.
Like any girl entering into puberty her body is going through changes, and she feels rather awkward in her own skin. She is a bit of a bean sprout these days as she hits growth spirits making her clothing often short in length. Even with her growth spurts she is on the small side for young girls her age. She has a tendency to awkward in her movements as she grows, and trips over her own feet like she isn’t used to having to pick her feet up as much or something. Effie rarely puts on weight, despite the fact she stuffs her face but it is due to her growth spirits and already quick metabolism.
Effie dresses in what her mother lays out for the day; so having a uniform will make her clothing choices much easier. Her clothing style is conservative and somewhat classic. Her mother has always made sure that she has high quality clothing, especially when she is off to Hogwarts this year. Effie must dress to impress because she has a name to live up too. When she wears skirts she can be self-conscious because she hates her knobby knees and skinny legs.
Personality Description: Effie has always been the strong silent type and always appeared to be watching and observing the actions that took place around her, even as a baby. It was as if she was learning from her observations and this was not something that ever changed. Of course as Effie grew older her observations became more acute and she gained a lot of knowledge from sitting quietly and observing. Effie is slowly fine tuning her talent of discovering tidbits of information people would rather her not know. Sleuthing and eavesdropping are perhaps some of her favourite past-times outside the general reading and music. Due to her quiet nature she is definitely one you might not notice is around when having a private conversation with a friend. With the more knowledge she collects the more aware she has become of the power information can hold. She truly believe “knowledge is power” in ever aspect. Effie is a strange young girl as she enjoys watching other people squirm in discomfort or fear for what she might know and share.
As freely as she would spill someone’s secrets for a good price she can also protect them for a better one. She is excellent at keeping her mouth shut when it suits her. Effie has closely guarded secrets of her own, of course none of them exactly life defining or dramatic because she only a young girl but they are big to her. Her secrets are for her only and she rarely shares them with anyone afraid to trust. She shares her secrets with her journal her most precious possession. The big secrets in Effie’s life mainly revolve around broken objects she denies breaking, or things she did to break the rules.
Something Effie prides herself on, other than her excellent sleuthing skills, is the fact she appears so innocent. She had away of making people believe what she has to say. This is only getting better with age, but it will be interesting to see how she fares with other people than her parents. Effie has a manipulative talent to get her way, mainly because she is a spoiled princess and knows nothing else than getting her own way. Like any spoiled princess when she doesn’t get her way, which is rare in her family, she does have a temper-tantrum. Effie is too immature to realize that this is not the way you are to act in regular society and people won’t put up with it. It will be a lesson she will have to learn. Still Effie has a talent of coming off as disgustingly sweet.
Pride is probably a big downfall for Effie, she is far too proud of herself. She knows she is smart, and she knows she is talented for a child. She can at times be a bit cocky about it for a little girl especially in the way she treats the help. Effie is a know-it-all and loves to rub it other people’s faces. When she doesn’t know something she gets frightened and nervous, she clams up and become shy. Effie hates feeling stupid and feels ashamed when she doesn’t know something. Just as hates not knowing something Effie hates admitting that she is wrong so she generally doesn’t. When she knows she is wrong and she feels she cannot make you believe she is right she will walk away in a huff. Immaturity strikes again and this is something she will have to grow out of. She needs to accept that she isn’t always going to be the best.
Determination and focus is a huge part of who Effie is. She is very determined to do her best and give as much of herself as she possible can. This is great but sometimes it is applied in a less than desirable way, such as to getting her nannies fired as soon as possible for her own entertainment. Of course her determination is used for the better, just as her focus is. She has a desire to learn and wants to gain further knowledge. She is determined to get better at the musical instruments she plays, and eventually become quite good at wandwork once she is allowed to use one. She has even started reading for school, and with her wonderful memory she is retaining some of the information she has read. Effie has always been an indoor girl, and is absolute rubbish at outdoor activities or sports. Effie does not want to admit she hates flying and is rubbish at it because it is like showing a weakness.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder can describe some of her quirks, like her need for neatness or her need to write in her journal as much as she possibly could manage. She likes things to be in certain orders and is very particular about the way she approaches things. At home she has a routine but she can deviate from it but prefers not too. Effie likes order to her life, and hates having a hair out of place.
Despite the fact she comes across as looking out for number one, aka herself, she does look out for other people. Effie does have loyalty to herself, but anyone that can get in her good graces will have her loyalty. As long as she feels a benefit to the friendship, or genuinely she likes them then they will have a friend for life. Effie does not trust easily so to gain her trust is a very big deal, and breaking it can be catastrophic. Effie can be a very good friend, even if she is a bit cold and stuck up. Effie has lived a privileged life, one that has supplied pretty much anything on a silver platter so she does have a tendency to feel superior. Effie is still learning though and her world has been very closed off, she has much to learn and a reality check is awaiting her around the corner.
History: The story of where Euphemia Grissom-Dolohov begins not with her parents but with her grandfather Antonin Dolohov. Mr. Dolohov was a friend and peer of the Tom Riddle. He was part of the Death Eater ranks when his friend Tom became Lord Voldmort. Mr. Dolohov believed in the cause of blood purity and was a strong supporter of the Death Eaters, eventually the mark. Like any pureblood male he wished to have an heir, someone to continue the family name and inherit the family fortune. He found the perfect bride, Italia Rocco a beautiful Italian pureblood woman from a strong Italian family. The wedding was quiet only immediate family present at the event. Antonin did not love Italia but she was exactly the type of woman who was acceptable as a wife. They did not spend much time together, as he was busy at the side of The Dark Lord. He of course made time to spend evenings with her in hopes of her becoming pregnant. Eventually it was announced that she was with child. On a snowy day in January 1964, Antony Dolohov was born but at the expense of Mr. Dolohov’s wife, not that this exactly plagued him as he had his heir and that was all he needed.
Not surprisingly Mr. Dolohov was a horrible father, rarely around and held little interest for his son. Antony had all he required and more, spoiled by the family’s riches and raised by nannies. Antony saw more of his grandparents than that of his own father. Antony was a student of Durmstrang Academy during the time that the likes of Malfoy were in the halls of Hogwarts. It would not be until Antony was out of school that he would meet Prudence Grissom the gal who would steal his heart.
Prudence and Antony would marry at twenty and nineteen respectively but they would wait to have children, they first became pregnant when they were twenty-four. Unfortunately this child was a stillborn, they tried not to let this dishearten them and continued to try to make a family. Prudence would lose another child when she was twenty-five, making them believe they could not successfully have children. It would not be until 1991 when they were twenty-seven that they successfully had a child, Beatrice Athena Grissom-Dolohov. The Grissom family wanted to be represented, as they never had a son of their own. Prudence and Antony dotted upon the little child but never was seen by Antonin Dolohov until much later due to his imprisonment for his involvement in the war.
The Grissom-Dolohov’s did not expect to have another child, so when Prudence became pregnant again they were surprised. They had always thought Beatrice to be a miracle, but they were pleasantly surprised with the arrival of Euphemia Hermia Grissom-Dolohov on October 29th 1996. Euphemia (or Effie as her parents would soon call her) was born prematurely and it was thought that she might not survive, but she proved them all wrong and turned out to be a healthy baby girl, even if she was a bit small.
Effie was the baby girl that was seen by Antonin Dolohov, and he loved his little granddaughter, much more than his older granddaughter. Mr. Dolohov showed much more affection to his granddaughter than his own son, but the compassion was short lived. Once more Antonin became too involved in the second war and interest in his family faltered. Antonin even dragged his own son into the war this time, requesting his support, which Antony felt obliged to give. Prudence was not happy that her husband was getting so involved, she had always supported Voldemort and the Death Eaters but she had never intended to get so wrapped up in it. Effie would never truly remember her grandfather, as he would meet his end in the Battle of Hogwarts. Antony was not apart of the battle but he has never been quite the same since that day.
After the war was when life for the Grissom-Dolohov’s would reach some form of normalcy. Beatrice demanded attention but Effie so easily captured it. Effie was spoiled and so was Beatrice, but Effie was coddled whiles Beatrice was asked to help with Effie. Effie was at times a sickly child and rarely was allowed outside, forced to find entertainment indoors. Eventually when given the choice of being inside or outs Effie would chose to remain indoors finding reading, drawing, and music a much more useful use of her time. Beatrice of course was off at Hogwarts, leaving much of the family’s attention to be on Effie. It was something that was not hidden well, the fact that Effie was the favourite child. Beatrice’s hate for matter was not hidden nor did she try to hide it.
As requested by the departed Antonin Dolohov, Effie would receive his mother’s wand upon her time to enter school. It was yet another way that Beatrice felt alienated and that Effie was the favourite. Beatrice dislike for Effie only grew as Effie became far more interested in tattling on Beatrice, or spying on her to use information against her. Beatrice loathed the idea of having to experience her seventh year with the likes of Effie roaming the halls.
Effie was very much an indoor child through her youth, much more interested in quiet activities. She had little interest in Quidditch and found chess much more entertaining. As she got a little older she learnt the magic of secrets and the power information could hold. Effie became rather manipulative so as to get her way all the time. Her nannies were fired one after the other for things they may not have done, or some sort of half-truth that slipped from the darling Effie’s lips. She found entertainment in the events that preceded and followed the firing of one of the staff. A girl had to entertain herself some how. She also enjoyed making her older sister squirm; surprised she could have such power over Beatrice. As she was the favourite, she could do no wrong. She was the apple of her father’s eye and took after both her father and her grandfather.
Like Beatrice it was decided she would attend Hogwarts, as her mother much preferred the idea of her children attending her school rather than Durmstrang. Prudence felt Hogwarts was much closer to home, even if Antony felt he would much rather his child attend Durmstrang as he had done. Effie is now approaching the months before her first year of school and she couldn’t be more excited.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Snake-tongued and an air of superiority hovers around Effie, much like would be expected of a Dolohov. The name alone could warrant her sorting into Slytherin, but her drive to better herself and come out on top is also there. She is manipulative and cunning, not afraid to search for what she wants. As cold as she might be to most she does have the potential to be a great friend to a select few, and a friend for life. Effie can be a true friend, but she can also be your greatest enemy.
Writing Sample:Effie’s small fingers moved over the ivory keys of the grand piano in the drawing room of the Grissom-Dolohov manor. Effie moved her fingers to the desired keys of the notes displayed before her on the music stand. As the piece required a stretch beyond her hand spread she slammed her hands to the keys in frustration. Effie hated being bested normally but her frustration only grew when her lack of ability was not from training but the size of her. Her hands so petit could not make the octave stretch no matter how hard she might try. The piece of music was beyond her but she didn’t want to admit it. Effie’s anger was welling up inside her as she gritted her teeth together. Once more she attempted it only to push back from the piano and stalk off in a huff.
The newest nanny Uma was following behind her telling her to quiet down and not treat the piano that way. “You really are new,” Effie said as she slowed her pace, her fashionable shoes no longer making a noise in the marble floored hall. Spinning one heel she turned to look at Uma. “Don’t tell me what to do.” Her normally sweet youthful voice held a bitterness that you could taste. “I run the show around here.” It was a sad but true fact and when Effie couldn’t run the show any longer she would take it upon herself to make sure they were no longer employed. To watch a nanny lose her job was much more amusing than sitting and watching a quidditch match to Effie.
“I would like a glass of warm milk, not to hot nor cold.” Effie said sweetly with a gentle smile on her face as she rocked from her toes to her heels with her hands behind her back. Her mother, Prudence, had just strolled by moving from the library towards the conservatory. “After you get my milk, at the correct temperature draw my nightly bath.” Effie shooed her away with her hand, as she had seen her mother do time and time again with the house elves. She truly did observe and pick up traits from bother her parents.
Turning away from the shocked nanny she skipped towards the library in search of her colouring book she had left on the floor earlier. If it was not there Effie was going to be angry because that was where she had left it and wanted it too stay. As she came into the library she stomped her foot. She looked to the spot on the ground she had lounged earlier that day only to see no colouring book. “Where is it!” She said in a nearly shrill voice, but the words had not been necessary as the colouring book was on the table. Effie’s previous sour mood turned brighter as she found it.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Effie is a young girl but not to be underestimated. She appears innocent but underneath it all there is a very manipulative young girl. Her actions and rule breaking are merely small time for the moment, but as she gets older she is only becoming more quiet trouble.
