[February 1] Princes Kept the View [Taras]

At first glance, the envelope that was delivered to the office of Mr Taras Strelnikov did not seem particularly remarkable.  After all, mail came in all the time.  A few Daily Prophet articles were hardly out of the ordinary.  They could have been a collection of news clippings sent by a colleague, perhaps, or an update on important world events, passed on by a loyal underling.

But as one began to rifle through the stack, the reader would come to realize that not all of the articles were recent.

Bad Augury Bodes Darkly
for Remembering Day

by Niobe Thursby
April 15, 2008

YORK -- This week the Coven of Seers and Diviners, headquarters in Yorkshire, has been responding to reports of bad omens coming in from all over the country concerning the coming year and in particular this Tenth Remembering Day.

One such prediction about Remembering Day comes from Sybill Trelawney, Seer and former Hogwarts Professor. "The stars are signaling a very dark portent for the Tenth Remembering Day.  Too many auras in close proximity will react with...

Attack at Remembering Day: Two Killed
by Niobe Thursby
May 3, 2008

Hogsmeade - A Hogwarts student has killed an Auror and Wizengamot member last night in Hogsmeade.  The attack occurred following the unscheduled appearance of Theodora Kingstreet.  The student, who was identified as Kyle Gibson (17), charged on stage and cast a spell, killing...

Indeed, the article clippings were not recent at all.  Judging by the events covered, some stretched back a year or two: some even farther than that, detailing the more notably awful events in recent magical history.  The breakout at Azkaban, the more tragic events of the Second Wizarding War -- whoever had sent them had obviously gone to quite some trouble to compile the collection.

In a way, it was almost like a Greatest Hits, provided that your idea of "Hits" was defined by nefarious murders and notorious disasters.  But at least the word "Greatest" was indisputable.  Anyone at all who had been living anywhere near Britain in the past year would have surely read some of the articles.  After all, there were notable inclusions like...

Murder At the Ministry!!
Gawain Robards Murdered!

by Evan Irallis
November 1, 2009 - Breaking News Edition

Dear Readers,

Tragedy has struck the Ministry, yet again.  This time, within its own walls and at the hands of one of its own.  In the afternoon on the first of October, at some time between three and five in the afternoon, Gawain Robards, Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, was murdered.  Details are scant and, in true Level Two fashion, the Auror office is remaining rather tight-lipped...

And longtime favorites such as...

BREAKING NEWS: DAYLIGHT WEREWOLF ATTACKS
March 11, 2009 - Evening Edition

During daylight hours today, werewolves were reported to attack across Great Britain.  At least three attacks of this nature are confirmed - two in Diagon Ally and one in the forests surrounding Hogwarts School.  The Daily Prophet has very little information at this time but we can report that these creatures appear in all ways like werewolves.  There are no known instances of werewolves transforming during the day, so all bets are off as to what's going on.

It certainly seemed that whoever had put together the collection -- be it world-wise colleague, helpful underling, or someone else entirely -- had had a particularly morbid bent to their interests.  There was not a single news clipping that was not about some sort of horrible event: things that had rocked the Ministry, that had shaken the magical world to its very core.  Even more recent tragedies were include:  the Wizengamot Elder who had been horrifically murdered; the Ministry research mission that had been ambushed by vampires; even the recent series of tragic deaths at the Royal Opera.

Whatever the purpose of this, it was quite the collection.  But still -- perhaps oddly, considering how much work had surely gone into collecting the great range of articles -- no one had thought to include any commentary.  There were no notes.  Nothing scribbled in the margin.  No way of knowing why someone had thought this particular ensemble of news items should be of any interest to Mr Taras Strelnikov, aside from the fact that they had been sent to him at all.

Except, of course, for the handwritten note attached to the very top of the stack.

There was no return address.  Evidently, if Mr Strelnikov was interested in sending a response, he would need to find a way to deliver it all on his own.
