Wand: Just shy of 11 inches, springy and with a bent shaft, Ianto's wand is made of Chestnut with a unicorn tail hair at its core.

Physical Description:
Ever since he was born, Ianto Hughes has been blessed with a richly toasted skin color: not quite white, yet not quite dark, but somewhere perfectly in between. With his growing age, however, small liver spots have begun to appear across his hands –nothing noticeable, yet still present. Ianto, however, accepts them as proof of his experience and knowledge, just as he enjoys the fact that his hands are hardened and dry from shuffling through dirt so often. At times, he tends to have dirt caked beneath his fingernails, but he doesn’t find himself caring too much either.

Ianto is actually marginally tall, although as he grows older (yes, he reminds his family that 58 is hardly ancient, but still), his bones are growing a tad bit harder, and his joints just aren’t what they used to be. With chesnut colored hair -that is slowly greying- and brown eyes, he considers himself to look quite extinguished –a great achievement, considering his family has never exactly been rich, so to say.


Personality Description:
Ianto’s foremost character trait is his love of plants: he’s always had a natural ability for anything related to herbology, and can spout out the name of any specimen he encounters without hesitating for even an instant. Some have called it an obsession, and he’s the first to nod vigorously and agree –right after questioning whether the person in question has ever encountered a Peruvian Sunbell, as they really do make cakes much tastier. And thus lays yet another love of Ianto’s, although significantly less prominent than his adoration of herbology: he very much enjoys cooking, especially if whatever is on the menu is a new plate he’s never made before, the more complicated the best. Ianto is a curious soul, and often finds himself experimenting with both of his big obsessions.

Yet at the core of it all is the man’s loyalty and the fact that he adores those who share his blood. Family is deeply important for the British man, and he makes a point of keeping in contact with all of them –whether they be directly related to him, or otherwise. His sense of loyalty joins with a sense of social justice, to shape him into the type who does not stand for anything he considers unjust.  He’s not the type to keep quiet, and will quickly speak up to point out his opinion –even if he’s aware nobody in the room will agree with him.

He’s an odd man, with many habits –after all, another of his obsessions is on bowties, and he tends to buy a pair of each type, in order to wear one and save the other in his collection- that might result eccentric. As a matter of fact, he’s been called insane many times, but Ianto would rather not care about busybodies who butt into his business, and instead focus on his own life. The Herbologist does not have much of a filter, resulting in many odd moments as he just doesn’t know which topics are appropriate in any given social circumstances. He believes many of his family members find him annoying, for he continuously worries about them and gives advice –useful or not. But as long as he’s content that he’s done all he could to make them come to their senses, he rather doesn’t mind what they think.


History:

It was in the most bitter moments of winter that Jemima Hughes growled her way through a muggle birthing, and delivered Ianto Hughes into this world. Quite oddly, the infant was born without more than a flimsy little wail –although Jemima did her best to make up for his lack of sobbing. The day Ianto first pulled apart his eyelids to glance into this world, Jemima was staring down at him with his father, Adelebert Hughes, right by her side. Often in his later years, Ianto has been known to say the first thing he’d seen in this world was family, and the last thing he intended to set his eyes on was family as well –and Merlin’s Pants did he have a big one! Ianto’s younger brother, Tobias, was born three years later –but there was plenty of family to make up for his absence before then.

Even in his toddler years, Ianto was quite fond of plants, and would spend his days digging up seeds and planning to bury his own private garden –an endeavor that never saw its completion while he was still a kid. When Ianto was around five, he was quietly informed by Jemima that his best friend and neighbor, Trent, was a werewolf, and to be careful around the boy. It was the first time the child ever witnessed anything vaguely unjust, and his eyes opened towards the discrimination Trent suffered. In his later, adult years, it was this experience that birthed Ianto’s idea to search for a cure to lycanthropy.

In 1963, Ianto reached Hogwarts, and was sorted into Gryffindor, although during his following years he’d hear plenty of Housemates whisper –not quiet quietly enough- that perhaps he should have been a Hufflepuff due to how odd he was. Still, Ianto kept quiet and to himself, studying –always excelling in Herbology, and often seen with whatever pet plant he currently had in his arms as he walked from class to class- and only speaking up whenever he saw someone else being trusted unfairly. Words of war were never far from his ears, but Ianto simply did not care about such matters –as long as they didn’t touch upon his family, or his plants.

In 1970, Ianto graduated from school, and took his first years as an adult off to go travel the world, in search of rare specimens of plants. It was during these years that, in the Czech Republic and searching for a rare spring tailed sticky cabbage with magical properties, Ianto met a vella named Ruzena.  It was love, and they were married, and soon after returned to London –with a magical cabbage in tow. Their first child, a daughter named Audrey, was born in 1979, and their son named Flynn came around in 1981.

Ianto built greenhouses on his property, and began to sell plants out of them or directly to stores that made use of them for ingredients –all while experimenting himself to make new hybrids, or find new uses for them. Throughout the war against Voldemort, Ianto kept his head down as much as possible, for once keeping his mouth shut on a matter –although he was very much against the Dark Lord’s beliefs. When Voldemort was finished, though, he through a big party for anyone who wanted to come and celebrate –and to this day he isn’t quite certain why it was such a failure.

And so he lives now, in peace and making good work at annoying his family by worrying about them, caring for his plants and his wife and simply making his own life; standing up for what he believes is justice, and keeping out if he should.

Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Ianto is a herbologist, and as such his main duty is to breed pants to sell them to buyers who put them to use for their many and varied properties. However, he goes a bit beyond that, in experimenting with many of their qualities in order to make new breakthroughs. For example, he is currently working with his son to find a cure for lycanthropy using a very special plant he has bred.

Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
If you try to tell Ianto he is not the most specialized herbologist on the planet, he will probably spit in your face. Although he might not have excelled in everything at school, he was indeed the top student in his Herbology class –as a matter of fact, his interest in plants dates back all the way to when he was a still just a child. With a perfect green thumb, and the ability to retain every single piece of information of plants he comes about, his brain is somewhat of a encyclopedia on herbology.

Somewhat eccentric as he may be, Ianto Hughes has a strong sense of social justice and an inability to keep his mouth shut when he wants to open it –as well as finding it impossible to realize when certain comments should be kept to himself. A man who loves his family dearly, he also has a number of obsessions: herbology (to the point of being a walking encyclopedia on plants and their properties), cooking and bowties (to the point of having two of each, in order to wear one and save the other in his collection).
