Physical DescriptionLawrence is 5ft11in tall, has fair skin and hazel eyes. His build before his imprisonment was although naturally weedy - rather bulked up by the amount of exercise, practise and investment used to improve his strength. Since imprisonment, he has become leaner, and looked sicker than he has in all his life. It has taken months since his release to source food on a regular enough basis to start gaining weight. By December 2010, he is still weedy but altogether stronger. By the time of his capture in February 2011, he is thin again.
His hair is long, dark and curled. There are a few silver hairs beginning to streak through. Although it was kept relatively short during his imprisonment for ease, as things began to improve towards his possible release, Lawrence elected to allow it to grow, more towards the curly mop he had in his best days as an auror. He feels more himself for this action, and it is to ensure he is recognisable to those who knew him, so they remember when the Daily Prophet takes his photograph on his release. He rarely if ever ties his hair back, and he doesn't get to wash it very often.
Originally a left handed wand bearer, Lawrence's loss of his left hand in his early days of imprisonment have led to him learning to use his right hand to good dexterity. Without a wand for over a decade, he was a little clumsy in his casting as he begins to learn again, but with time, this improved with practise. By December 2010, he is almost as proficient as he felt he was before he was imprisoned.
He has big feet, generally a strong, physically fit person (when he's had enough to eat) who moves gracefully with the training of an auror. Since being released, he is also researching into how to replace his hand with assistance from St Mungo's, but with becoming a wanted criminal, he has had to stop.
Out and about Lawrence tends to sport a coat or a long cloak with a hood if he thinks he may be recognised. He wears dark, muted colours - though really whatever he can get his hands on while homeless.
Personality DescriptionLawrence has always appreciated the truth, its value, and as he grew older, when it was best to be kept under wraps, diverted, sought or buried through his role as an auror. A man who was not always content with seeking answers in books, he found his best responses by going direct to the matter.
His thoughts have always been broad - he's keen to see how all things are linked or affect each other. As such, he tended to see links and patterns in crimes most often, though sometimes they were wrong. Lawrence takes great joy in others agreeing with his point of view, which is generally well thought out and justified. It was this ability that helped him co-operate with both sides of the divide in the Second War. When others failed to agree or offer alternatives he can be blunt, and argumentative, but generally he invests a lot of time into getting his facts right.
His irritation about being contained and also his nature to seek adventure led him to become the traitor in the Aurors during the second war, the excitement and the defiance, the manipulation of truth. He enjoys challenge and keeping busy. Being incarcerated in Azkaban was hellish, and he used his skills to get out as early as possible on best behaviour.
Since his release, Lawrence has fewer morals. He delights in taking control over others, mostly because he has been dominated and beaten by Ira and the wizarding world in general. Imperio-ing innocent muggles gives him a little ego boost, but taking unofficial charge of
The Gallivanting Bard has only swelled his confidence. He does still have care for his niece, Hannah Bombay, though they are no longer on good terms since the werewolf fights. Occasionally he shows compassion to others.
HistoryLawrence is the younger of two children, with an older sister of two years,
Cynthia (who became Cynthia Bombay, mother of Hannah Bombay). Pureblood, Lawrence had dreams to be an auror from an early age and although he had many other plans along the way he still continued to return to his original plan of being an auror.
Lawrence was sorted into Gryffindor, the same year
Rafe Sellaphix (father of Figaro Sellaphix),
Miranda Storm (nee Carter, Head Healer),
Sandy Misslethorpe (Deputy Head Healer),
Darlus Scruffin (Editor of the Daily Prophet),
Gladys-May Shufflebottom (nee Carter),
William Shufflebottom (beast breeder and fellow Azkaban inmate),
Annaliese Delacroix (mother of Adelia Delacroix),
Susannah Bellingham (forever his love) and
Walton Wickwood (wandmaker) were sorted in Hogwarts. He was dorm-mates with
Octavian Lotusorder and
Angus McBoid (father of Moira McBoid).
Lawrence studied hard, was a good all-rounder, and using his wish to find the bigger picture and find links, Lawrence succeeded in Hogwarts with a good set of NEWTs in the summer of 1981 and applied to begin Auror training.
Being an auror was, very luckily for Lawrence, everything he had hoped it would be. He enjoyed the challenge and the quest for truth, but he also began to develop his opinions on how truth should be handled. He fell into agreements and relations with some of Voldemort's periphery followers - who at that point had lapsed, the Dark Lord was to all intents gone.
In June 1995 things began to change. Voldemort returned. The months that followed dragged Lawrence further and further into informing on minor things at first that helped these periphery followers to gain some respect amongst the group. These demands began to step up as time wore on - Voldemort was looking to overthrow the Ministry, though Lawrence wasn't aware of this, he was treated in such a way by these associates that he was assured he would be safe. His blood purity helped assure that.
Unfortunately Lawrence's actions were beginning to be traced by two colleagues. Jonas had been one of Lawrence's charges as a trainee and they got on well. Although Lawrence took a long while to realise that Jonas was the one on the other side hunting out Lawrence as the leak, he maintained good relations throughout. When he did find out, he was a little disappointed, but also exhilarated at the chase.
Things came to a head in June 1997, Jonas and company caught up and there was a clash. The Ministry fell, Lawrence managed to stay afloat into the other side by the skin of his teeth, in the last moment he had almost completely destroyed the little trust the Death Eaters maintained in him. However, once they had control of the Ministry, they had very little use for him. The realisation made him desperate, he began to bargain, and became out of control. He was forced into torturing and interrogating those who were not of pureblood or who disobeyed.
His position became progressively worse, and by the time Voldemort was overthrown, Lawrence's position had fallen apart. By virtue that he had survived the occupation, and had appeared friendly with the Death Eaters who controlled things, he was tried - and found guilty for conspiring and co-operating with torture, and sentenced. The majority of his work informing before the Ministry was overthrown did not come to light through lack of firm evidence - he had not been identified as the source.
Azkaban was not a kindly place. No longer guarded by dementors, Lawrence instead found himself at the mercy of brute wizards who also issued their own additional sentences when unsupervised. He lost a hand at the wand of a wizard whose wife he had been involved in the torture of. The man was punished and removed for the act, but there was nothing that could be done to restore the missing hand. The experience solidified his wish to seek revenge, but anger would not allow him to be free.
In the years that followed, Lawrence pursued a life as a prisoner that was humble, repenting. He adopted the stance that he was reformed, and along with the injustice taken against him in the early days of his imprisonment, and after twelve years, he earned his release.
Twelve years of planning...
By midsummer 2010, Lawrence was wrapped up in the werewolf games, providing Muggles for the fighting. He tried to save his niece, who had been kidnapped as a werewolf, on realising who she was. Knox Greyfriar, Hannah Bombay and Johann Storm all confirmed he was there, and Lawrence became a wanted criminal once more.
Collaborating with Ira Almasy, and assisted by old friend Edwin Glass, Lawrence is instrumental in destroying the Leaky Cauldron on 5th November 2010, though nearly loses his life. At Christmas he is tasked by Jebediah Layton to return the kidnapped Zel Trumble to the shores of Loch Ness.
It is about this time he teams up with old school classmate, Willy Shufflebottom, fresh out of Azkaban. Willy's natural ability to be able to create a huge dragon patronus is perfect for Lawrence's attempts to control dementors. Their first attempts are very haphazard, but they have success enough to interest a meeting in the new year with Mortimer Gamp (the Head of Mysteries) and Edwin Glass (then Head of Accidents and Catastrophes).
The weeks that follow are a protracted game of cat and mouse with Aurors such as Andromeda Gamp, Grace Eddy and Nadine Pinn. With increasingly audacious attempts to use dementors against others, Lawrence eventually gets out of his depth and his mind begins to unravel. He turns to another ex-schoolmate, Miranda Carter (now married to Ignan Storm) for help which goes terribly wrong.
Before February is over, Lawrence has sent Healer Arcturus Hollingbury and Auror Pinn to St Mungo’s for a dementor attack and a very broken hand. For Mortimer Gamp he sent a selection of Hogwarts students to experiment instead of Valentine’s Day.
His comeuppance comes from the Storms in March when he continues to stalk Miranda, and her husband takes a chunk out of him instead. Thank goodness for old classmates - this time, Sandy Misslethorpe - pieces Lawrence together. It comes at a cost - as Sandy holds him hostage. It seems time is up as Sandy entrusts Miranda to assist, but Lawrence escapes, and with manipulation and obliviation, scrapes out of trouble.
Luckily his niece Hannah is back onside to help him recover in return for helping her escape Ira Almasy’s blood contract. Not an easy feat, and will involve polyjuice, deception, and killing Hannah. Though successful for Hannah, Lawrence misjudges Ignan Storm’s courage to get involved, and nearly brings an early death to the Hogwarts Deputy Headmaster in the process.
Life cannot go on in this manner. Shufflebottom arrested, Hannah released from Ira’s contract, he has lost Almasy and Layton’s alliance. It’s too risky to go back to Misslethorpe. Lawrence goes it alone, focusing on the dementors to prove his abilities.
On the 6th April, issuing warning to Edwin Glass (now Minister for Magic), Lawrence turns himself in to Head Auror Ed Pratt and Head of MLE, Solomon Carstairs. He has given up, and is run ragged both in mind and body. Harper Graves takes his case, and convinces him that there’s something left to live for, if he cooperates.
Weeks of interviews follow, happy to cooperate to a point, but careful to protect a few choice companions and dangerous memories. But eventually the source runs dry and a hot summer reduces dementor activity until it is decided it would be safe to move Lawrence back to Azkaban.
The events of August 3rd 2011 were out of Lawrence’s hands, but the link with the dementors continued, and became great intrigue to the likes of Auror Fauna Blake with the pentrals investigation. It gives Lawrence a stay of execution so to speak.
Meanwhile, plans between Minister Glass, Head Healer Storm and new Head Unspeakable, Yavin Morgenthau are afoot to use Lawrence for dementor research. Glass is more than pleased to get rid of Lawrence, but knows there are choice memories that must be obliviated to ensure Edwin’s shadier actions in recent months are not made public. He arranges for an obliviation in late August and then ships Lawrence off to St Mungo’s.
On the 24th August, Lawrence and his hitwizard minders (headed by Fendrel Stump) pass into St Mungo’s somewhere within the Fourth Floor, Spell Damage wards.
