Physical Description: Standing at 5'9", Roger has a lean look about him from years of running and swimming to keep in shape for Quidditch. He is rather pale, with dark brown hair worn slightly longer than the average male lenght, which has a hint of curl to it. His face is expressive, with high cheekbones, full lips and astonishingly light blue eyes. Despite being born in Ireland (and a still proud Irishman), Roger has an average London-accent.
Mannerisms: Despite not being a very physically imposing man, Roger has no trouble gaining attention when he walks into a room. He has perfected the art of maintaining a coyishly neutral expression even when he is feeling anything but. When nervous or stressed he will run his hands through his hair (often displayed in interviews and difficult matches), worries his bottom lip or sticks his hands in his pockets. His mother jokes that Roger should have been an orchestra conductor due to the fact he becomes very animated with his hands while talking, often gesturing wildly when he is feeling particularly passionate on a subject. He is often complimented on his fantastic posture while not looking as though he has a stick up his arse. In interviews Roger is very quiet and fiddles with anything on the table, rarely making eye contact with the interviewer. Most pictures of him in interviews and anything press related he looks overwhelmingly bored… because he usually is.
Style: With an affinity for striped sweaters in various earth tones and jeans, Roger wouldn’t look any different strolling around central London than the average muggle. He does not put a lot of worry or effort into his style, rather just gives his hair (which he wears slightly longish in a riot of naturally loose, dark curls) a good brushing and makes an honest effort to shave every few of days. He is, however, very obsessed with his overall hygiene; it is not uncommon for him to shower twice a day and change his clothes often. Name brand items don’t have a pull for him (unless it is G-Star Raw, a muggle brand that Roger is a bit obsessed with), he would rather wear what feels comfortable and looks good on him… then again, there is the case of that damned, ratty, old cardigan he’s had since Hogwarts and refuses to get rid of; even his mother can’t pry it away from him and it has popped up many a times in candid photos and photoshoots. He is a man of warm, woody scents and favors cologne with cedar hints to it. His clove cigarettes also add an interesting mix to his scent.
Notable features: Roger has astonishingly pale blue eyes which the media considers his ‘trademark’, and he jokingly confesses if it wasn’t for his eyes no one would have ever noticed that he has a bit of talent when it comes to Quidditch. He also has a scar on the lower half of his abdomen from appendix surgery.
Personality Description: Rita Skeeter once wrote: “Davies is a charismatically handsome man walking arm in arm with a lie; he uses his pretty-boy mask to tell his finely crafted ‘truth’.” But honestly, who listens to Rita anyway? However, this time it would seem Rita was dead on. He is an amalgam of contradictions. Roger, on the outside, is exceptionally charismatic with a devil-may-care attitude. He smokes, he drinks, he womanizes, and he’ll do as he damn well pleases, thank-you-very-much. Of course, after turning 30, he has calmed down quite a bit from his reckless 20's.
But what does Roger really feel about himself? For starters, he is not confident at all. Oh no, no, no. He was always astonished at his own popularity at Hogwarts given that he didn’t seek out the friendship of too many people; he is still surprised and very annoyed by the media attention that maintains through today. Despite all his womanizing, if you ask him to talk to a girl that he actually fancies Roger seems to not know the right things to say. He rationalizes his good luck with women with the explanation that they see him as the ‘perfect accessory’. A few times he has revealed his true insecure nature to friends, who usually have laughed and usually respond with: “You? Not confident? C’mon now, Roger! You’re the most confident person I know!”
Roger is friendly and approachable; he strikes up conversations with anyone, anywhere. If you don’t want to talk to him, in his opinion, that is your loss. Roger is genuinely interested in other people and what they have to say… until they want to know more about him. While he can talk to you for hours about traveling, movies, the state of the magical world and everything in between, Roger cannot talk about what he truly feels. Stating that when he ‘shares his true feelings he gets a yucky feeling and it makes his hands tingle’, he will instead charmingly say what you want to hear; if there is one thing Roger is better at than math and Quidditch it is being able to get a grasp of the person’s personality within a few moments of conversation. So, talk to him all you want, but don’t be surprised if you walk away from a two-hour conversation knowing only the name of his two kneazles and his favorite country to take a holiday.
He is surprisingly private when it comes to the more intimate details of his life. While Roger doesn't mind that the media comments on the finely crafted, reckless playboy image he works to give off or commenting on a match, he will become rather upset when real truths are printed. He's been known to have had a few rows with reporters when bothered outside of a scheduled interview and once hexed a photographer's camera to the man's face when he wouldn't stop taking pictures. Roger strongly dislikes interviews and feels very uncomfortable during them, and is even more so uncomfortable during photoshoots. He's been labeled 'difficult' during these events, much to his own pleasure, in the hopes it would discourage others from booking him. All in all, Roger doesn't understand why he is in the public eye at all since, as he puts it, 'I'm just a bloke who rides a really fast broomstick throwing a ball around to other blokes on broomsticks'. Of course, when it comes to fans he is very generous and will take as much time as needed to speak to a fan.
Pride Roger’s deadly sin. While he struggles with his own insecurities, in a way he knows he is fortunate to have a very intelligent mind (something he enjoys showing off from time to time), what the public deems ‘good looks’ (even if he thinks his facial structure is awkward and dislikes photographs of himself) and he is lucky to be a damn good Quidditch player. When insulted, he will laugh it off, but don’t think Roger will forget. He remembers, and at the next opportunity he will make you feel foolish; be it in the next interview, at a party, or where ever the perfect opportunity arises, and will do it in a subtle way, so that the person on the receiving end won’t forget any time soon. The dark side of his ability to figure out people can manifest itself into him saying utterly devastating things (stuff that he might not even mean); when crossed, Roger’s anger is very slow burning but he will do everything it takes to make sure the person’s life is very, very difficult. On the other hand, when Roger likes someone he goes out of his way to be a good mate to them; he is very loyal, but a fair-weather friend at best.
Despite all this Roger hates to see other people hurt or suffering (when they don’t deserve it, and he has a very clear line for who does and doesn’t), and has been known to go out of his way to make even a stranger’s day better. Roger is a very complex person who struggles with the duality of his nature: the famous, light-hearted, reckless, playboy Quidditch star, and the introverted, self-doubting child. Of course, he would never let on to the latter side of things.
History: Eily Davies loves football, so it came to no surprise she happily went out on a date with an up and coming Irish footballer by the name of Tobias Delany during the cold, early new year of 1977. Despite being a witch fresh out of Hogwarts (graduating in 1975) Eily hid this bit of information from Tobias as she never quite found a way to break the news. Unfortunately, she would never get the chance to tell him, as they broke up two months after dating after Eily learned she was pregnant. Tobias ended the relationship claiming a baby would ruin any chance at a professional career for him, and begged Eily to end the pregnancy. Instead, eight months later, Eily gave birth to her son, Roger, in Cork, Ireland. It had been her decision to keep the baby despite warnings from her parents on the difficulties of being a single mother while trying to make ends meet as a waitress for a popular local pub.
Roger was not an easy baby to deal with; from the first day of his birth he seemed to be plagued with constant illnesses: jaundice, colic for three months after, constant ear and sinus infections, and scrofunuglus all before the age of one. Realizing she could not provide for her son on her own Eily moved from her small flat in Cork to her parents’ home in Ballynoe, Ireland, where her mother ran a small, in-home magical veterinary practice and her father worked for the Ministry in the Magical Beast Division. The addition of Roger in their small, two-bedroom home made for a cramped environment, but Pappy Gillian and Granny Brooke didn’t mind; they loved their grandson and were overjoyed to help take care of their fiercely independent, headstrong daughter. However, after Roger’s appendix ruptured shortly after his second birthday, Eily decided to search for a better job and move herself and her son closer to London, as, she reasoned, they spent so much time at St. Mungo’s anyway. After a few months of searching Eily accepted a position as an administrative assistant in the Ministry of Magic’s Public Safety Information Office, a position she found beneficial for both the increased pay and better access to information regarding Voldemort, who was at the height of his power (Eily refused to disclose that her son’s father is muggle for fear her family would gain retaliation from the Dark Forces).
After the fall of Voldemort in 1981 the wizarding world breathed a sigh of relief, yet Eily kept Roger inside to protect her son’s fragile health – despite the fact he hadn’t had any major medical illnesses in over two years, the Healers at St. Mungo’s warned that her son’s immune system is extremely compromised, therefore getting illnesses and infections is more serious for him. In 1983, Eily begrudgingly allowed Roger to enroll in the Frognash junior Quidditch team. Despite spending most of his early childhood inside with books Roger turned out be quite a good flyer, though his natural ability didn’t pacify his mother; she still continued to worry and fuss if he came home with even a small bruise, often times threatening to remove him from the team, citing his health is too fragile for such a sport. Roger’s health as he grew older continued to improve, and by the time he was 10 years old hadn’t even had so much of a sniffle in years. During those childhood years Roger often snuck out of the house to go on ‘adventures’, though looking back, Roger will laugh and say the adventures were quite lame: from sneaking into a neighbor’s backyard to kip some blackberries to riding his muggle bike (a present on his 7th birthday) a few streets further than allowed. Roger wasn’t one to back down from a challenge, either. He often took risky dares, mostly out of a secret desire to show his mother he wasn’t as fragile as she thought.
September of 1989 Roger found himself aboard the Hogwarts Express and while he was relieved to be away from his worrying mother, his first year at Hogwarts was not good as he had hoped; his marks were okay at best and he spent most of his time sulking in the library, feeling awkward and out of his element. Year two turned out to be better for him after he tried out for, and accepted onto, Ravenclaw’s house quidditch team as a chaser. Roger quickly gained new friends, though he was a bit miffed on why people gave him so much attention; it seemed he couldn’t walk down the hallway without someone calling his name and wanting to chat or walk with him. By his 5th year Roger took over the captaining position of the Ravenclaw house quidditch team upon the graduation of their captain.
Despite a few odd occurrences at the school happening due to that Potter kid his life was pretty good for Roger at Hogwarts: his marks were high, his team did pretty during matches, and he usually had a different date to Hogsmeade outings; he was quickly gaining reputation as a bit of a heartbreaker. As Roger’s popularity grew his insecurities grew as well. He doesn’t take being rejected lightly and a few times reduced some girls to tears to save his own ego. His biggest blow would be in 1995 when Roger, who had developed feelings for Cho Chang, watched as the girl he loved went into a relationship with Cedric Diggory (not that Roger had disliked Cedric, rather viewed him as a friendly rival on both the pitch and the two had been fairly close friends). Of course he was devastated at the loss of Cedric, and was there for Cho when she needed him, but he couldn’t pretend that he didn’t hope for Cho to finally see him the way he saw her. Just when things were going right in 1996 he worked up the courage to ask Cho to be his girlfriend but was rejected for Harry Potter. This stunned Roger. Really? Cho passed him up for Harry Potter? Sure, Harry was a good quidditch player, survived multiple attacks by Voldemort and was a nice guy, but really? Hiding his disappointment, Roger retaliated by dating some pretty girl whose name he didn’t really care about (Sofia? Sally? Sherri?) and made quite the display of snogging her in plain view of Harry and Cho’s Valentine’s Day date in the hopes it would make Cho jealous.
Roger graduated in the summer of 1996 and took an offer from Kenmare Kestrels as their reserve chaser. During this time, Voldemort had returned to power and the second wizarding war had begun. Roger’s mother fretted and begged him to abandon his budding Quidditch career, fearing her son’s blood status might make him a target. Roger did not listen to her, and continued with his training. He did not participate in the battle at Hogwarts, but instead returned the day after, like so many other former Hogwarts students, to help rebuild; while his immediate family survived the second war with no damage, Roger knew many others who had not been so fortunate.
While helping pick up pieces of destroyed portraits Roger met a pretty Swedish witch named Katja Jonasson, an intern for the Scandinavian Ministry of Magic. Roger fell in love quickly with the enchanting girl; it was refreshing to be with a girl who had no idea who he was, as he was quickly growing tired of girls wanting to date him for fame. His reputation as a hard partying playboy was put to the side under Katja 's influence. Unfortunately, she had more plans than simply cleaning up of his life. Katja moved to Ireland to be with Roger while lived in Dublin during his time the Kestrels. During this time Roger’s friends began to see less and less of him, as Katja continued to dominate his life. She systematically cut him off from his former friends and family, all the while insisting that they were bad for him because they disapproved of his new lifestyle. In mid-1999 Roger was traded to Pride of Portree as a full-time chaser. With this new position came new responsibilities: a more rigorous training schedule, matches on a weekly basis, travel, and a sharp rise in the media’s attention. Katja became sulky and resentful; she was becoming more demanding of him, often becoming violent when she didn’t get her way.
When Katja realized that Roger’s attention was shifting from her to the new opportunities with a career in Quidditch, she started to demand marriage and children as a surefire way to make him fully hers. However, Roger was growing tired of Katja and her interference… while he dearly loved her, the budding new career held more of an allure. Days before the final match of the 1999-2000 season, Katja manipulated the fresh media attention Roger had gained to publicly break up with him and move back to Sweden, making sure to milk the attention for all she could and played the part of the poor, broken-hearted average girl tossed aside by her famous lover. This, of course, tore Roger apart; already uncomfortable with the media prying into his private life he coped by returning to his former vices: drinking, womanizing and gaining a reckless reputation.
The negative attention eventually led to Roger’s removal from the Pride of Portree team. In 2001 Oliver Wood offered Roger a position on his team, Puddlemere United, as a reserve chaser with the understanding he must clean up his act and prove he really wants to be a professional player. Despite his still hard partying ways Roger continued to prove himself on the pitch, eventually moved up to a full time chaser. The start of the 2003-2004 season Roger moved to Ballycastle Bats, only staying for half a season until returning once more to Pride of Portree where he continues to play to this day.
In 2006, Roger was added to the Irish National Team during the World Cup, seeing his team to the Semi-Finals, losing to Australia in a thirty-five hour match with a final score of 440 to 380. Around his thirtieth birthday Roger decided to search for his father; while he admired his mother's decision to be a working mother and do so successfully, the initial pangs of both a mid-life and personal identity crisis began to ring in his psyche. He had always known his father was a muggle and had left Eily for a promising football career while she was still pregnant, but he had no other information to go on. After months of extensive searching, including calling in a favor with a few friends handy with information fathering, he tracked his father to Stoke-On-Trent, England. The career Tobias had been tempted by had never taken off. Instead he married, had a daughter, and teaches high school football. Upon seeing the world-weary, empty-shell of a man that Tobias had become caused all of the questions to melt away, and Roger made peace with the memory of his father. After all, Eily and Roger seemed to have fared much better than Tobias.
The last three years have not seen much change for Roger: despite one long-term relationship with an English witch named Carrie Amsel that ended right after Christmas of 2009 after two years, Roger's life as a popular Quidditch star has remained fairly constant. He has been very vocal on his goal to become Captain before he retires from Quidditch.
OTHER INFODescribe your job duties and how you go about them: As a Chaser, Roger is in control the Quaffle and attempts to get it through the goal hoops past the Keeper. He is to maintain possession of the quaffle while flying through the air on a broom and avoiding bludgers and the attacks of opposing players.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: After serving as Captain for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team during his Hogwarts days, Roger immediately accepted a training position with Kenmare Kestrals right out of Hogwarts. Having a natural talent, he has found himself on starting line-ups for his teams since his early twenties. Joining the Irish National Team for the 2006 World Cup thrust him and his abilities into the spotlight, as well as gave him a renewed sense of confidence in himself and a desire to achieve the rank of Captain once more. He combines his natural math abilities, especially physics and geometry, to give him mental advantage on the pitch. Calculating angles, speeds and trajectory has become second nature to the point he can make snap equations and solutions in his mind and apply this knowledge to his performance. He is also an extremely aggressive player with a strong leadership streak and is not afraid to play chicken with an opposing chaser or bludger.

Writing Sample: Chocolate shop or bookstore… Chocolate shop or bookstore. Roger's mind weighed between the two options while he raised his bag free hand to scratch absent-mindedly at a spot on his cheek. The last two weeks had been just… difficult. Laying low at home in Manchester and avoiding the magical world as much as possible had done some good, though tension still built up uncomfortably at the base of his skull more often than he wanted to admit. His hand dropped with a tired jerk, slipping into the pocket of his jeans. A cigarette would be the perfect thing right now. Roger retrieved the small rectangular package containing the clove cigarettes, placed it between his lips and exchanged the pack in his pocket for a small matchbook with two matches. The first match burnt out in the wind before he could light the cigarette. He inhaled the phosphorous smell; it scraped his throat, and stung his nose. The second match almost broke in half from the ferocity he struck it with.
He gave a huff as if with that, he could blow his thoughts too and then tossed the unlit cigarette to the ground.
Oh well, I really shouldn’t smoke anyway. Pinching the bridge his nose, he glared in the distance.
What the hell is your problem, Davies? In fact, he knew the answer. The problem was contained in last week’s Witch Weekly but he couldn't be more specific about the nature of the problem for the life of him. Not beyond the utter annoyance it evoked when he caught himself doubting his own efforts, always doubting. He simply couldn't recognize the continuous nagging feeling in his stomach. He hadn’t realized how long he’d been standing there until he gave a start at the sudden voice behind him.
“Oh, sorry about that,” he said, giving a grin and turning around to look at the owner of the voice. Suddenly, Roger’s grin faded, and his pale blue eyes widened. “…Cho?”
The world seemed to quiet into low humming and even the sky faded a bit from blue-silver to an uninteresting grey. It was a horrible shock to his system, the discovery of Cho standing before him, looking as devastatingly perfect, and rendering him motionless. Roger’s whole being seemed to quiver as his heart drummed with irregular, heavy beats, so heavy like it'd turned into stone and jostled around uncontrollably. The surprise remained on his face for only a ghost of a second and Roger hitched the boyishly charming grin back onto his face as though nothing were wrong. “Hey, Cho…” His voice was calm and casual with warmth, as though he were greeting an old friend with a less complicated history than the two shared. His hand rose to brush through the dark tendrils of his hair, a classic sign of nervousness that betrayed his otherwise cool exterior.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: All things considered, after turning 30 Roger has really began to come into himself as a person. He is beginning to understand himself better and is finally showing signs of settling down and more focused on creating a comfortable life for himself rather than living it up every night (not that he doesn't enjoy living it up, of course). He is still intensely private with his life and his emotions, but extremely outgoing and social.
