Full Character Name: Adelebert Elwood Hughes
Character Birthday & Age: October 20, 1978-- 31 years old.
City & Country of Birth: Like most Hughes, he was born and raised in London
Blood Purity: Halfblood
Alma Mater: Hogwarts: Gryffindor Alumni
Job/Position: Former Auror, Transfigurations Professor as of March 10, 2010.
Wand: Cypress, dragon heartstring. Rigid, with a bent staff. It is 10 ¾ long.
Physical Description: Adelebert is not what people would be quick to call handsome. He has a round baby face that his mother had once insisted he’d grow out of. However, at thirty-one years of age, he has accepted it as a part of himself that would only grow rounder if he grew wider. Bertie’s skin is fair and burns easily in the sun—he is quick to get hives and his skin turns red and blotchy quickly when exposed to quick changes in temperature or anything he is allergic to. His blue eyes are large and revealing—it is not difficult to tell what he is thinking and feeling, or when the wheels are turning in his head.
Bertie’s lips are full, and he jokes that he could have made a living as a lipstick model. His smile tends to be just a little bit crooked, and his mouth sometimes looks almost too small for his face, especially in comparison to his larger-than-proportionate nose.
He is exactly six feet tall. His body is soft and prone to plumpness. Weight he gains tends to go straight to his midriff, while his legs tend to stay relatively skinny. His body is not very toned, though people wouldn’t argue that he looks overweight. He is simply, very average in build. Outside of work, he tends to wear wizarding robes, but he has a fascination with muggle fashion. He occasionally wears muggle clothing that doesn’t match, but he thinks they look good.
Personality Description: Like most members of the Hughes family, Adelebert has a few quirks of his own. He has difficulty with the concept of personal space. As a result, Bertie may stand uncomfortably close to those he happens to be conversing with. Although he understands that he makes people uncomfortable if he stands too close, but it is so ingrained into him that it’s difficult for him not to do.
Bertie is loyal, confident and sure of himself, sometimes to a point of arrogance. He is also reckless, impulsive, and sometimes tactless. He is not intentionally rude, but he is often oblivious to the emotional state of others. This can lead to him rubbing people the wrong way. He has a good heart, and never intends to hurt other people’s feelings—and he is quick to apologize when he realizes others think he has done a wrong (even if he disagrees). He has learned that apologizing is a good way to avoid an argument.
Despite his obliviousness to the negative emotions of others, he is deeply intuitive when it comes to hidden secrets. If he senses that someone is keeping a secret on purpose, he will push and push until he figures out what the secret is. He is nosy, stubborn, and persistent. Whenever he is given a task, he will not give up unless there is simply nothing else that can be done. Even then, he sometimes has difficulty telling when he has reached a dead end, and cannot go any further.
Bertie is a hopeless romantic. He wants to find that one perfect person to have a fairy-tale romance with. In relationships, he tends to come on a bit strong. Not only does he want a serious relationship of his own, he is incredibly supportive of the relationships of others. He secretly ships people in his head as soon as he finds out they are single, even if the pairings would be awful couples.
Adelebert has a fascination with teapots and frilly things. He has a lovely collection of lacey sweaters and teapots. He knits many cozies for his teapots, as well as scarves, sweaters, and other items for the people he loves. He one day wants to release a book of his knitting patterns, but his job is just a bit too demanding for him to organize and publish his patterns.
History: Adelebert and Gertrude Hughes were born on October 20, 1978 in London to Rhiannon and Tobias Hughes. Bertie and Gertie were often dressed in matching outfits, and this trend continued up until they were sent to Hogwarts. A third brother, Alfred (Alfie), was brought into the world two years later. The three siblings grew up around their cousins, Audrey and Flynn. The five of them remained close all throughout school, despite the fact that Audrey was placed into Slytherin and Flynn into Ravenclaw (that must have come from their veela mother! Hughes were never anything but Gryffindors!)
Bertie loved being a Gryffindor. He felt like the house was perfect! It was full of people who thought like him! Who were reckless like him! Who were ridiculously loyal and honorable like him! Throughout school, he was somewhat of a class clown. His grades had been very average except for the few topics he was interested in. He had difficulties with reading and writing, and often times he had to memorize papers or pages from the text in order to do well. This trait still carries over into adulthood. He was very skilled at Transfiguration. By the time he was a fourth year, he decided he wanted to be the next Mad Eye Moody. He wanted to be a famous auror!
When he signed up for OWLS, he inquired about the general requirements for an Auror. He received his NEWTS in Potions, DADA, Transfiguration, Herbology, and Charms. He barely received E’s in every subject except for Transfiguration—where he got an O.
After Hogwarts, he went through training to be an auror. Although the training for most was supposed to be for three years, it took Bertie five years to become an auror, at the age of 23. The training was difficult and strenuous, and his stubbornness and persistence was the only reason he was able to push through the training and succeed.
After he had become an auror, his parents went through a divorce. Even though he no longer lived with his parents, it was difficult for him to accept. In his mind, they were going to be together forever, like what happened in romance stories! However, his parents are still very friendly and are on good terms. Rhiannon still shows up to family events on occasion. His father now owns a bakery with his partner. It took Bertie awhile to accept his father's boyfriend, but now he can't imagine his life without him there as a supportive figure.
He has spent his days working, knitting, and meeting potential life partners. He has dated his fair share of women, and has been the dumpee rather than the dumper in most of these relationships. His life has been enjoyable and relaxing so far, but he feels disappointed and lacking in the romance department. He doesn’t feel like he is too behind, as none of the cousins in his generation have started a family yet. Adelebert is currently trying to advance in his career, and is determined to improve. He may not advance anytime soon, but that has not discouraged him.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: As an Auror, he investigates crimes that involve the Dark Wizards or the Dark Arts. He also apprehends and/or detains potential dark wizards and criminals. He also helps other aurors train the auror trainees.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: He received E’s in most of the subjects required to enter training and an O in one. Although it took him two years longer than usual in training to become an auror, he finally passed the exams and training. At 31, he is a seasoned auror, but still a bit less talented than a couple of the other aurors his age, as it took him longer to complete training.
As of March 10, 2010 he is the Transfigurations Professor at Hogwarts.
Writing Sample: Sum up your character in one paragraph: Adelebert is a Gryffindor alumni, former auror, current Transfiguration's professors. He is outgoing, friendly, stubborn, determined, and reckless. He is a hopeless romantic who enjoys knitting and collecting teapots in his spare time. Like most members of the Hughes family, he is very family oriented and loves organizing family get-togethers and chatting with the extended Hughes and Peppers, even when it isn’t a holiday.
