Gale was pleased with the words the other professor gave his class, but wanted badly to stick up for them. They were a great group truly when they were not being...teenagers. However, he knew they were ready to get started.

"Feeling a little restless, Mes amis? Thank you Professor. Class, I'd like to demonstrate what we are doing first before we dive in yes? Mister Schlagenweit, if you would please step up here and give me a hand." He knew Sasha wouldn't be too pleased with what he was about to ask, but he truly trusted the boy to do it right.

"Will you stand up, point your wand right at my chest and cast Aguamenti please. It doesn't matter how strong, just be quick about it."

Figaro greeted Bevans with a nod and a shrug as Sasha engaged in a more detailed analysis of what the day's work would be.  The uncertainty was clearly eating at the little horde of teenagers who, although they would never admit it or even know it themselves, thrived when there was some structure and predictability to their day.

Dueling seemed as likely in Charms as in Defense, and they hadn't yet done it in Defense so Fig was still betting on that.  "I still say Dueling," he said to Sash and Nick.

But in no time at all the bell was tolling and Professor Kesali was getting things going.  With a rather bizarre request.  But then, Professor Kesali was a rather bizarre person.  If Sasha was even thinking about giving Kesali lip, though, he might think twice.  Kesali was on the warpath and taking no one's sass today...

"Well go on," Figaro urged Sasha with a gloating sort of grin.  And gave him a little nudge forward.

Merlin, Sasha hoped Figaro was wrong.  One could only guess what a dueling lesson with Professor Kesali and this visiting French professor would be like.

Sasha looked up at the sound of his name, hesitating a moment before he took a step forward at Figaro's prodding.  "Yes, sir," he offered, dipping his head in respectful acknowledgment.

As always, he wasn't thrilled at the idea of casting a hex at a professor and, given the earlier instructions, he was even less enthusiastic about finding out the nature of the lesson in front of the whole class.  He hoped he wasn't going to regret deciding not to abandon his own clothes for the grubby looking loaners.  But, especially after the fiasco of the midterm, he had every intentions of doing his absolute best.

The professor had asked for a quick cast so, as soon as Sasha had found his spot, he pulled out the purpleheart wood wand and pointed it at the man.  "Aquamenti!"  Even after the strong jet of water erupted from his wand, Sasha kept his wand held firmly in his hand, ready for whatever would come next.

Gale knew he was going to enjoy this more than he ever should, and when Sasha lifted his wand to cast the charm. Gale followed in his lead, but it wasn't the water he commanded,

"Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo!"

Just as the stream seemed as though it was to touch his face the gust was quick to part, pulling back like a gasp as it parted to both soak the floor but nearly every student lined up along the wall. Gale held his stance well, his only visible eye a normal silver grey reflected the water perfectly giving him a false appearance of a rather are blue.

"Good job, Sasha." Gale said as he gave a nod to the boy to release his spell. Though the floor was full of water as well it appeared to be contained inside an invisible barrier like a pool of water in the middle of the class. "Now if you will cast that same spell here and fill up this area with water. I'd appreciate it." With a nod to the other Professor, he silently asked him to help.

"This Charm is a parting Charm, it doesn't work on solid objects at all. The object has to be in motion, and later Professor d’Aubigne is going to demonstrate how it's used in dueling. But for now let's just have it mastered no? Once the pool is full, you will cast the spell on the water to part it and allow you a dry safe passage to the other side. It's a long one, so listen again," He repeated the Charm, and would even go to write it on the board before they started.

Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo (Straight Path Charm)
Pronunciation: uh-VARE-tay PED-ee-um ah TOO-um ah MAH-loh
Appearance: Invisible apart from its effects
Description: Parts a crowd or other movable object (will not split a solid object in half) to create a pathway,
lasting as long as the caster can maintain sufficient focus.
Regulations and Skill Level: Legal. Advanced to Master.
Etymology: Latin translation of Proverbs 4:27
At Absit Omen: Dreogan Eleor uses the spell to part a crowd [7][1]

Figaro was dripping.  His blonde hair was now plastered on his face, his grey jumper water-logged and his trousers clinging to his legs.  There it was.  The reason for those old robe smocks on the hooks yonder.

"Yes, good job, Sasha," Figaro heckled sarcastically, as if Sasha was anything more than a pawn in the good Professor's demonstration.  But Fig was good-natured about it, as he usually was.  He knew a basic drying charm and after wiping his fringe out of his eyes, he did a cursory job on his trousers and front.  By no means was he fresh or daisy-like, but at least he wasn't sopping.

And he well wanted a go at this mouthful of a spell.

The artificial, floating lake in the middle of the classroom had reached about chest high after a few more Augamenti Spells, and Fig stepped up to the line on one end.

He knew the stakes.  Let the spell slip and he'd be drenched in cold water again.  That would not do.

"Keep hands and feet away," he advised his peers as he took his turn at the Parting of the Sea.

"Averte Pedeum a Tuum a Malo!"  he pieced together the incantantio and wand motion.  It was probably one of the more complicated ones he'd ever learned, but now that he was a sixth year, there were patterns forming and the wand movements didn't seem so random anymore.  Like small units pieced together and modified into a new motion.  He knew he missed a transition, but recovered and the water began to ripple.

He could feel the pressure on the wand as the magic worked against all that heavy water that really wanted to stay put.  But it began happening.  A slice cut out down the middle and he found that as he moved closer to the wall of water the slice deepened and widened.   And before he knew it, it was in the center, water high up on three sides.

It only took a second to lose focus.  In just one second, Figaro became aware of what he was doing and stopped thinking about the complicated new spell to admire the situation he'd gotten himself into.  And that was all it needed.  The water rushed in and drenched him.

Sputtering and soggy, he waded out of the chest high pool and slogged past the Professors who were waiting on the other side.

He held up his fingers.  "So close."

Rayven wiped the water out of her eyes from it splashing on her. Even if she had put the robes on, they would have to be waterproof to really protect her from anything. It didn't bother her really. She could often be seen out in the rain anyway. It was just water. Not only that, but a simple drying charm would do the trick when class was over. She saw no point in doing it now. She was sure someone else would end up splashing the water.

Of course Fig was up first. How was he going to muck this one up? She had almost made a game of it by this point in the year. Would he splash water around the room? Would he make it half-way? Would there be a wave that would cascade across the room? Then her question was answered. Half-way. Well it was more than she expected.

Rayven took her shoes and stockings off and made her way to the indoor pool. She pulled her wand out and wiped it on one of the few dry spots on her shirt. She hated using a wet wand. It just didn't feel right. She closed her eyes and took a breath to focus a bit. She opened her eyes again and pointed her wand at the pool.

"Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo!" she said with a flick of her wand. The water started ripple and then began to part. She watched as the water got taller and taller on the sides and spread from the middle. When she had a clear path, she walked through without a drop falling. When she got to the end, she moved her wand in a quick motion and the water crashed back down into the pool. She looked quite pleased with herself and tucked her wand away.

"Better luck next time Sellaphix," she said with a laugh. "If you need it sometime, I'll help you with charms."

As Chloe was drenched in water, she let out a bit of a squeak, not liking being wet. Her hair slowly dripped as she looked at her shoes, seeing them now soaked to the bone. She huffed out air grumpily, as she slipped off her shoes, and stuck them in her bag. She also took off her sweater, so she was now in tights, her skirt, and her button down with a blue camisole on under it. Her toes were now exposed, painted a pale blue which just made her feet look paler than they already were.

She watched as her classmates attempted the spell to cross the little pool. Luckily, her shirt had been kept mostly dry from the thick sweater. But she was destined to show that she knew what she was doing. "Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo!" She said, waving her wand, and keeping her focus. The water parted ways, and she slowly walked, keeping her focus less on where she was going, and more on keeping the spell going. She walked through, then broke her concentration, as the water surged back. Chloe smiled, and dusted her hands together. "A piece of cake." She said, as she took a step, slipping on to a small puddle that had formed, and falling back into the water.

Chloe climbed out, frowning, now looking at her soaked uniform, as she marched angrily back to her spot in the line.

The Straight Path Charm. Gabriel's smile disappeared as he looked on. That was a spell he had heard of and done... though admittedly not with water. Using it in dueling sounded promising though. Granted he wasn't the best at dueling, but learning how to use any charm spell on the fly was handy. Still... a brand new charm would have been nice.

Stepping he heaved a small sigh and pulled out his wand. Being soaking wet from the professor's sneaky demonstration didn't bother him in the least, and he acted like he wasn't even wet. Pointing it at the water he began waving it in the proper fashion, concentrated, and said in a nice clear voice, "Averte Pedeum A Tuum A Malo."

As the water began to part like it had with the other students Gabriel walked forward, willing the water to do what he wanted before his next footfall. Reaching the other side, he broke concentration and let it crash back together. It was quite possible he let it crash back a little more forceful than necessary to splash the other students again - quite a few had appeared put out at being wet. Smirking faintly he glanced to the professors as he headed back to his spot.

A shiver ran through Raine's spine as she waited for her classmates in the disorderly queue that had been made for the the hovering pool. Between the professor's flashy demonstration and their own various levels of success or failure, splashes of water were everywhere.

The Gryffindor approached her turn at the charm, letting an instinctive quiver move past her shoulders to her head as she shook off the water in a catlike gesture. Her hair was a mess of drenched red spikes.

"I'll see you all on the other side..." she glanced wryly at her classmates who hadn't yet crossed. This was going to be a rather biblical lesson. Raine lifted her chin and motioned her wand against the mass of water. Before the telltale casting, she repeated the charm to herself- and then, finally, in practice. "Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo!"

Like a gust of wind, the force that shot from the wand parted through the water vehemently. The sensation was strange, alarmingly insubstantial in spite of its strength, but Raine held it in place with frown of concentration.  Imagine being trapped in such a pool. Her gaze shifted to the professors at the other end and she walked calmly through the aqueous path until it was crossed.

At its conclusion, the Gryffindor allowed her wand to falter and the waters behind her fell smoothly together. Cold droplets hit the back of her head.

Figaro watched enviously as some of his classmates managed the complicated spell on the first try, including Raine Almasy, who he'd been co-Champions with in the Second Task of the Tournament.  When she'd transformed into a literal wildcat while they were trapped inside a painting.  A seventeen-year-old Animagus.  Some people had it so easy.

He wasn't jealous or bitter, just sometimes he felt different.  Like even if he'd tried somethings he'd never be able to to.  That people like Raine must be so good because of some unlearnable talent they already possessed.

The other thrills and spills weren't without their own entertainment, although so far, no one had been doused as much as Figaro had doused himself.  The floor was getting wet with puddles, and even after a drying charm, folks were still rather soggy.

"Ha!"  Figar hadn't been able to resist barking out a laugh when Chloe Harris actually cleared the sea, but fell back in.  He shook his head as she walked by and mumbled a sorry.  He wasn't trying to piss her off, but you couldn't write something funnier than that.

As the water from Sasha's charm settled over his classmates, he could hear Fig's joshing over the sound of dripping and annoyed voices.  With a blush, Sasha quickly ducked his head and moved off to join his classmates along the edge.  He was still relatively dry, unlike his classmates, but he knew that would likely change soon.

A parting spell?  They would parting the water?  Like...

Sasha blinked and turned towards Professor Kesali, surprise and an unspoken question etched clearly across his features.  Was that it?  Was that ... historically, was parting the Red Sea simply a spell?  The Ravenclaw cast a quick glance around, curious to see if any of his classmates seemed equally confused.  But most had simply set themselves to the task.

Shaking his head, Sasha cleared his mind and fell in line after Raine.  He waited until she'd reached the other side and, just for good measure, gave the waves a few minutes to settle after crashing back into place.

"Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo.

With a loud gurgle, the waters began to part though the path before him was nowhere near as straight or pronounced as Raine or Chloe's had been.  It was narrow and crooked - more like a hiking trail or narrow canyon than a true pathway.  But, there was a path and the spell seemed to be holding so Sasha started to follow the twisting, turning route.

A couple feet shy of the other side, though, at a particularly pronounced bend, the path was far too narrowed to squeeze through - not without breaking the surface on either side. Sasha hesitated, considering the path behind him and the obstacle in front of him.  Taking a deep breath, the Ravenclaw decided to push forward.  Trying to maintain his concentration, he stepped through the tight spot.  The shock of the cold as his shoulders broke the water surface was enough for him to lose his focus for just as second - but a second was all he needed.  The water came crashing down around him and he slogged through, pulling himself out the other side, dripping wet.

Annie had been patiently waiting her turn. Sure, she'd also been bobbing up and down on her toes and muttering to herself, but that was how the girl did patient. She didn't like to rush in when it came to complex spells. She preferred standing back and watching first, marking the stance and wand motions until they were flawless. Then she liked to try the incantation on her tongue, accounting for every syllable, over and over. She was trying her hardest to get everything down before it was her turn, but she was slightly distracted by her sopping wet shoes. She could feel her toes pruning up as she stood, and it was difficult to focus knowing that her shoes were likely to squelch loudly with every step. She was capable of waterproofing her clothing, but she hadn't exactly been given the chance. Professor Unicorn's initial instructions had been less than clear. Luckily, from her position toward the back of the group of waiting students, she'd had enough time to obsessively practice the spell and attack her feet with a drying charm, which made her feel much, much better. She couldn't leave it at that, though. She set to work obsessively drying the rest of her clothing, too, practicing the parting spell in between garments. At no point was she even remotely still. She was so busy while she waited that she found herself at the front of the line in no time at all, feeling less prepared than she'd normally like.

She wasn't traditionally fond of practicing things in front of others, especially when it was her first time trying, and there were teachers watching. So many other students had already gone, and they'd done so well. She had never been terrible at spellwork, but in the moment she had convinced herself that she was, in fact, terrible, and that she'd always been terrible, and that this was going to go terribly. It was just easier to prepare for disappointment. She stepped up to the edge of the little pool, took a deep, deep breath and let it out on a sigh. She struck her stance, then corrected it, and then, finally, spoke the incantation very, very carefully: “Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo.”

The path she created was straight. It was very, very straight. It hardly looked like water. It was the kind of obsessive, no-variation, extreme outcome that she liked – indisputably perfect. But narrow. It was so narrow, in fact, that she couldn't walk down the center with any sort of ease. She put one foot down, and then was forced to put her other foot right in front of the first, heel to toe, and walk through her little gap the way one might walk on a balance beam. She had her arms out at her sides as she carefully made her way through. She was concentrating so deeply that she forgot just where she was, and the journey from one side of the pool to the other seemed to take an eternity. She counted each breath, each heartbeat, totally in the zone. She almost, almost lost her balanced and stumbled headlong into the water and broke the spell, but she managed to stay upright, kept steady and in focus by the cadence of her heartbeat. As she reached the end and released a deep sigh of a breath the water seemed to trickle back together in a rather gentle fashion, like the girl had never disturbed it at all.

Katherine made her way towards the water, waiting in line for her turn, and feeling confident about this. She'd read about this spell before, somewhere in a book she'd picked up. Oddly enough, she couldn't remember the title; but she remembered turning the stiff pages and reading through the hand-written notes... Then it clicked, there was no title because it was a spell book her grandfather had kept in the library at home. Spells, charms, hexes; you name it, he had it.

She'd ditched her shoes, and was almost standing before the pool of water, wiggling her toes in her blue and silver plaid socks. With a sigh, she took another step forward as Schlagenweit got soaked. He was a Ravenclaw, he should have done better. He was smart wasn't he? But then again, Harris had tripped and fallen in. Nobody was perfect, apparently.

The Salemite seemed more successful, her path clear and straight, and the end product leaving a calm pool of water behind her. Katherine stepped up, swishing her ponytail back over her shoulder as she ran through the spell one final time. "Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo!" She said confidently with a thrust of her wand, feeling the magic surge through her.

Violently, the water ripped itself apart, right down the middle, and sloshed to the sides to form a path. Confident in her blue socks, Katherine crossed the dry pathway, the water rippling by her sides. She felt powerful, and successful. As she stepped over the edge of the other side, she let go of the magic and calmly, the water fell back down to it's normal state.

Mason felt much better now that he wasn't wet like everyone else. "That's why I wore the robe." Mason smirked at Chloe in a very ha-ha, told you so manner. He would have stuck out his tongue if the foreign professor wasn't watching. He strode up to the line and shed the brown robe that was his cocoon of insecurity, now he was a Hawkward butterfly ready to flit away. He concentrated on the pool, then at his wand and recited the charm.

"Averte Pedeum a Tuum A Malo!" Hesaid, with perfect diction. The water rolled over itself and formed two straight walls on either side of a path about a foot and a half wide. He strode through the path and the water just hit his heel as he broke his concentration. He felt like a bit of a showoff and a jerk, but he was a Hogwarts champion, he could afford to be cocky for a day or two if he wanted.

Phillip was gritting his Newtons by the time it was his turn. Bloody hell, he felt like he'd been served a really painful chicken wingger right up his face. He had no idea what the people around him were muttering, and he was most definitely feeling like a class A barmpot. Which he was. Because Latin and wand did not equal genius, lovely magic with Phillip. No, it usually meant people should start running for their lives. He still thought everyone at 'Ogwarts was a darn mard arse for actually letting him attend the school.

He took a few steps towards the pool, settled himself in front of it, shook his shoulders and jumped on the spot for a few seconds, then... glared at it. Because, really, glaring at an inanimate object would actually help him with the task at hand. "This is complete and utter pants" he muttered under his breath as he raised his wand at the thing—because it was not deemed worthy of any other name but thing. Phillip's first problem with spells was actually the fact that his accent was making it awfully hard to pronounce any Latin, but apparently no professor had actually thought to help him out with the problem. He'd tried to get some non-verbal magic done, and that had proved difficult but in the end, there were no potentially lethal results—like with all his other spells.

He snapped his head to look around and grinned at everyone in close range. "Proper top, ye barmy kids. Ye best take a step back, or ten" he grimaced, wrinkling his nose. "Ye wouldn't want a water cannon up yer kite, ey? Just ta be safe, ye know?" he said with a frown as he slowly turned his head back at the thing. He always did warn them, and they still swore under their breaths when whatever disaster he could cause, actually happened. He shrugged and took a deep breath. Bloody hell if this wouldn't be bobbins... dicky mint.

"Uhverteh Peeduhm ah Tuhuhm ah Maloo" he said, and by the time he finished the botched incantation, he knew this will be horrible. The water practically hummed, and rippled in on itself, growing in restlessness and before he could scream "Take cover y'all" it... exploded. Literally exploded. And Phillip was on his back two feet away from the thing, wet to his darned underpants, with a skriking pain in his napper and he should've known it would be his bloody nose, 'cause it was always his bloody nose. He cringed and took his hand to his thumping nose and instantly recognized the warm feel of trickling blood. He finally got back on his feet and looked around to see that half of the room was wet and growling, and the smart-pants who cast a shield were smugly looking at the other poor unfortunate souls.

He stood there mouth agape and hand on his nose and shook his head, still not believing it did actually happen. "Skrikey..." he said with a knot in his throat. He shook his head again and wiped the blood off his face with his sleeve, shaking his body like a dog to get the excess water off him. "Well, then, any of ye kind, wet folks seen me wand?" he said with a completely ridiculous bloody grin.
