[January 5th] Parting the Red Sea [NEWT]

Charms NEWT Level

The classroom had been charmed to look much larger than it normally was, the floors were vacant of any seats other than benches along the windows, where the students were instructed to sit. Gale dressed in rather formal robes for his normally wayward attire stood up front smiling and laughing with this lesson's co-pilot, Sacha-Anatole d'Aubigne. In their short time of going over lesson's he'd grown rather fond of the older man, and was pleased to see how well they worked together. The lesson planned for their students wasn't an easy one, and he was happy for the help.

"If you will be so kind as to hang up your bags please, on the hooks on the far wall. And put anything of value you wish not destroyed in them. If your outfit of choice is a concern, than I would suggest you put on one of those." Gale pointed at the ugly brown robes that hung on a rack as the students walked in.

"Let's see how many howlers I get this time from parents, upset about ruined uniforms, even though I've offered protection." He mused to his friend, with his arms crossed. "Or accused of being a creeper." Oh, he would like this lesson...very much.

Mason walked into class and hung his bag up on the wall, rather curious about what the class would entail. Knowing that he and his parents didn't have enough money to purchase him even used robes, Sonny pulled off his crisp, black school robe and walked over to where Professor Kesali had pointed. The robes smelled a little musty, but it wasn't anything he wasn't used to, shopping mostly from used clothing stores and thrift shops when he had the chance.

"Morning Professor Kesali" Mason said, pulling the much to large brown frock over his head. He was dying to eat lunch, and he still had an hour to go, his classes hadn't been too bad this morning, he was still adjusting back to Hogwarts time and the school work was slowly piling up. Mason walked over to the benches near the windows. He noticed the older gentleman in the room with the professor.

One of the guest professors from Beaxbatons School. Mason smiled at him and then looked down at his scuffed up shoes.

When Mysti walked into the Charms room, she stopped for a moment to look around. It was definitely a different setup. The room looked bigger and rather… empty.  She walked over to hang her bag up on one of the hooks on the wall. Mysti looked down at her robe then over to the older ones. She figured it wouldn’t hurt to put one of those on, since she wouldn’t want to ruin hers.  The way the two professors in the front were talking, she figured it’d definitely be a good idea. Even if it meant wearing something as ugly as one of those old robes.

She removed her robe, and put a few things, including her earrings, into her bag. Double-checking her pockets, she decided everything of value was away.  Mysti smiled at the two gentlemen as she grabbed one of the old robes and put it on. She went back towards where her bag was and sat down, a little away from the Ravenclaw boy.

Looking around the room again, Mysti wondered what they could be learning today.  Granted NEWT level classes were more difficult, she wondered just how dangerous it might be as well. Especially when one’s teacher was an eye-patch wearing fellow. She looked down at the robe she was now wearing and grimaced.  It was probably a good idea not to think about where they might have come from.  So she just sat and waited for the rest of the students to arrive, and for the lesson to begin

Chloe walked into the room, surprised by how big it seemed today. She listened to the instructions, hanging up her things, and placing all of her jewelry into the pockets. Chloe tied her hair back into a tight ponytail before contemplating putting on a brown robe. She really didn't want to. And how bad could the lesson be? Chloe then thought to how this was one of her last good sweaters. It kept her nice and warm, and though she knew her parents would buy her another in a heartbeat, she didn't want to risk it. Chloe withdrew her wand from her bag, in the special holster, before going to sit down looking down at her favorite ballet flats.

"Mason, these are my favorite shoes. Do I risk them to whatever we're doing today? Or do I do the lesson in tights?" She said, sitting next to him. the held up one foot to show the shoe. "Like, these are my favorite shoes. Out of all of my shoes. These are my favorites. They're comfortable, and I mean, look at them! They're adorable!" She said, rotating her ankle to show off the shoe.

"If the students can not perform the charm adequately then their ruined uniforms are their own fault. Let them howl, let their parents send howlers, this is as much a test as it is a lesson. If they have been paying attention at all in their years in this class then they should have no problems. We are not reinventing the wheel as they say, we are making sure these children are not wasting our time, their own time, and the schools resources. As for being lubrique[1], well I do not know you well enough to comment, but I find it not likely."

Sacha-Anatole gave Gale a small smile and then turned to face the class. They seemed to be coming in rather quickly. This was good as Sacha-Anatole would accept no tardiness. If someone came late to his class back at Beauxbatons he would allow them to observe the instruction. However they would have to spend the time from that class until their next one practicing the wand movements for the spell, as well as the semantics, but would not be allowed to actually cast the spell. He looked over his shoulder briefly at Gale and wondered how his Charms colleague dealt with students that were late.

He noticed one student give him a smile upon his entrance to the class. It was almost an acceptable greeting. The rest of the students didn't seem have their manners about them on that day. He made a mental note to relay the information to Arianne so that she could address it in her upcoming seminar.

"It seems Monsieur Kesali that many of the students do not have faith that they will be able to do what is asked without ruining their vêtements[2]. Espérons qu'ils faire leurs preuves incorrecte[3]
 1. lecherous
 2. clothing
 3. Hopefully they proves themselves wrong.

Mason looked at Chloe's shoe as she displayed it for him. "I don't think Professor Kesali would let you participate without shoes, you could probably just scrub off whatever is going to get on them. I hope it's not paint, I hate paint." Mason grumbled, his stomach joining in. "I'm starving too." He said, poking his abdomen with a finger. "Can't someone create a spell that makes you feel full?"

He was feeling a little less than Mason today, maybe it was because he had to get up early, or his mom wasn't cooking in the kitchen. The one part he was glad about was not having his sister around. He was also glad his ribs had healed up nicely, but his wrist was still a little sore from the encounter with Mackenzie MacDonald in December. "OKay, I'm gonna be super emo today, so live with it." He finally said, putting his head on Chloe's shoulder.

Damien struggled to make sure his tie was in place before walking into the Charms classroom, typically he wasn't insecure about his uniform; but as of recent, he'd been trying much harder. He chalked it up to being at a foreign school where he wanted to impress the professors as best he could. Back at home, he tried as best he could to be professional and impressive for his teachers, but there was something about this school that felt stricter. After all, he was representing Salem; his behavior, his abilities... everything went into account here and he wanted to leave people thinking only positive things about Salem.

He walked in with a smile, "Good morning professors," he greeted with a nod of his head. He then turned to hang up his black satchel with the Salem crest on it, taking out his wand and slipping it into the front pocket of his black slacks. He wasn't overly worried about ruining his clothing, he was in standard Salem dress. Purple button down with a black jacket. He hung up the jacket as well and took up a spot near the Hogwartians, preparing for class by folding his sleeves with care. Once they were at his elbows, he stood up a little straighter and waited patiently for class to begin.

Waverly was actually rather excited about their first lesson back. Winter break had left her feeling revitalized and ready to take on NEWT level lessons with a new zeal. It was, in no small part, because of her current DADA grade. Storm was known for ridiculously high expectations and yet she's managed to pull out an O! She'd done equally well in Charms, and coudln't hide the bounce in her step, "Bonjour, Messieurs"! It wasn't until she heard Professor Kesali mention the word creeper that she had even given herself pause to remember Gigi's hissy fit during their midterm.

She felt a little bad for the Professor that he seemed to expect people to just treat him poorly. Yes, he was more touchy-feely than Roh was used to; but she liked him well enough. He was a good professor too. She didn't know about Mister Frenchy though, and found herself regarding him with a skeptical eye as she hung her bag on the aforementioned hooked. Almost as an act of defiance she simply slipped off her baggy cardigan, hung it up and bypassed the robes on her way to the nearest empty seat on the bench. Hmph, no confidence her arse; besides who knew where those robes had been. She almost shuddered at the thought.

Sasha arrived in the Charms classroom with the small group of students who came to the class directly from the Runes' classroom a floor below.  He stepped through the classroom door, nodding respectfully towards Professor Kesali and the visiting French Professor.  Once inside, he cast a curious look around the enlarged classroom before Professor Kesali's voice drew their attention towards the front.

The Ravenclaw approached the line of hooks and stowed his bag away.  After retrieving his wand from the pocket of his school robes, he hung those on the hook over his bag and moved towards the rest of the students to take his place.  Unlike many of his students, he didn't bother with changing nor donning one of the offered outfits.  A destroyed outfit was unlikely to be the goal of today's class - there was little to be gained from such a lesson.  It was likely more a risk of a poor performance and Sasha would much rather look presentable and replace an outfit (if necessary) than wear one of those

As he took his place, he overheard Monsiour  d’Aubigne's comment to Professor Kesali and grinned, nodding his head.  He hoped they'd prove the visiting professor wrong, as well.

Break had been wonderful for Annie Enright. She'd anticipated falling into a spiral of homesickness and depression, but in hindsight, it hadn't been her worst Christmas ever. There had been something really charming about getting Christmas presents by post rather than under the tree – there was no getting yelled at to hurry up when she felt the desire to remove the wrapping paper neatly and carefully and relish every moment of giddy suspense. Plus, there were presents from her brother and Hayden that she didn't have to hide from her parents, which was a treat that hadn't even occurred to her. More significantly, however, was the fact that she had an entire break to herself with no intense academic demands – just time to practice and become more confident in the areas that worried her. There had been hours long blocks dedicated just to wand handling! She felt good about what she'd accomplished. It wouldn't be long before she got back to drowning herself in work and imagined demands, but the rare sort of confidence she felt had not been taken from her yet. She was ready for charms class.

Well, she was ready before Professor Unicorn – erm, Professor Kesali – threatened her neat uniform. She understood that messy accidents sometimes happened in potions class, but charms? Feeling conflicted, she claimed a hook for herself and hung up her school bag. She folded up her cardigan and tie and stuck them inside, just in case, but the rest of her uniform wasn't easily removable, and she glanced around the room to see what the others were choosing to do. Some were donning the brown robes of questionable origin – glorified smocks, really – while others were choosing not to. If she wore the smock-thing, she'd look ridiculous for the remainder of class. If she chose not to, and something happened to her clothing, then she'd look ridiculous for the rest of the day. She could change before lunch, she supposed – the dorms weren't far – but the professor had said destroyed. Did that mean dirty, or...? The last thing she needed was to be stuck standing in the middle of the classroom in her underwear if her uniform was incinerated. She wasn't listening to the professors chatting. She was too busy tuning into her own frenzied inner monologue, as usual.

She needed to make a choice and stick with it. Ugly, weird smock-robes, or potentially changing at lunchtime? The latter option seemed a lot more comfortable for the short term, so that's what she went with. She didn't look particularly confident about this choice as she took tiny step after tiny step toward the benches and took a seat next to Waverly, who was cool... and also not wearing nasty robes. That did much to affirm her choice, and she produced a relieved sounding sigh as she crossed her legs at the ankle.  And yet... she still wasn't completely sure. “Do you think things are really going to get destroyed? Like, um... like completely destroyed?” she asked the tall Slytherin curiously. “If I'd known about this in advance I could have worn an old skirt or something.”

While the other students hung up their bags and made their decisions about whether to change clothes, Sam stood with her bag still slung over her shoulder and her arms crossed, glowering at Kesali and this other bloke with the snooty accent. 'God, I'm not wearin' one a' those mingin' things,' she said in her broad Derby drawl, sparing a disgusted glance in the direction of the brown robes the Charms teacher had pointed out.

'And I'm not gettin' my uniform mucked up.' Sam wasn't particularly vain, but she did have some standards. Standards that involved not looking ridiculous when she hadn't even had a drop of alcohol yet. 'It's a Charms classroom, this, not a bloody rugby field. Why doncha just tell us what we're gonna do, 'stead of acting all cryptic-like?' She narrowed her eyes particularly at today's special guest. Mr. My-Name's-Fancier-Than-Yours. Acting all high and mighty just because some girls didn't want their blouses singed.

Figaro was one of the students who came with Sasha straight from Runes.  Their professors had wasted exactly no time before getting into the rough stuff this term and so Figaro's brain was nearly full for the day.  He was pleased that the room looked cleared out for something practical.

"Nice..."  Fig loved a practical class far more than a lecture.  He got to be on his feet, use his wand, and there was usually plenty of chatting allowed.  And after Runes he needed that.  Merlin, did he ever.  And he didn't care about getting messy.

He dropped his bag and robe beneath the hooks and peeled off the gold and black trimmed jumper.  As he was rolling up his sleeves he had a look at the odd couple up front.  That Beauxbatons professor was there.  Figaro had seen him plenty of times around this term and there were rumors that he was some kind of secret badass.  And the Beauxbatons students basically said he was impossible to please, which was saying something.  Hogwarts joked that Beauxbatons was a bunch of pushovers, but that wasn't turning out to be true at all.

Figaro took up a stance near Sasha, his Nerdiest Mate, and nudged him with his elbow.  "So whatcha think? Dueling?"

"I needed their memories to teach them the Pensieve charm later, and asked a few of the ghosts and paintings to keep their eyes on the students so that I could get a true memory not something they made up. All I asked for was a little before breakfast from their dorm to the hall, but you would have thought I'd asked them to describe an intimate situation." Gale perched on the edge of his desk and folded his arms over his chest as he spoke privately to his friend, "You would think they didn't want to learn with how they fight me." He looked out over the room as more students came in, but it wasn't until he heard Sam's words did he notice she was even speaking to them.

'God, I'm not wearin' one a' those mingin' things, [...] 'And I'm not gettin' my uniform mucked up.'

He had to admit he was in a bit of shock, having expected this behavior on a day that they didn't have a guest, but to speak so out of turn when their class was to represent the reputation of an entire school?

'It's a Charms classroom, this, not a bloody rugby field. Why doncha just tell us what we're gonna do, 'stead of acting all cryptic-like?'

Merlin, he hated Slytherins.

"Well then it appears the easiest solution is for you to leave, Miss Travers. Your uniform won't get ruined sitting in the Headmistresses office now will it? Though your house will lose 10 points."

-10 Slytherin

"And for everything else that you have to say, it will be another. And that goes for the rest of you." Oh snap. They went and done it now, Professor Unicorn actually stood to stand before them, clearly very angry.

"This is a new term, and there are some new rules. Every time I am disrespected or interrupted rudely again your house will drop points faster than first years on their brooms. Now, Miss Travers, I'll be explaining what we are doing when the class begins, as of right now. Not everyone has arrived. So there are the robes, or there is the door. Take your pick."

Rayven walked into class with the usual pep in her step. If anything, she had a little extra pep as she sported her prefect badge. Charms was one of her favorite classes and one she excelled in. She had done very well last semester and was looking forward to this one. She was especially looking forward to seeing what the guest professor had in store and what he would be like. There were rumors going around school, but Rayven's outlook was 'believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear'. She couldn't wait to get started.

"Good morning, Professors!" she said in a very chipper voice. She made her way to the hooks and placed her robes and bag on them. She kept her wand out and pulled a hair clip from one of her pockets. Seeing the room how it was, she wanted to be prepared. She clipped her dreads up and made her way to a desk, opting to not take one of the brown robes. If her clothes got messed up, it would be alright. She could always wash them or replace them.

She knew as soon as Sam said something, Kesali wouldn't let it fly. He was usually very calm and a bit of a push over, but disrespect -especially- in front of a visiting teacher shouldn't be tolerated. She was a little surprise at how intense he seemed at the moment, but it just made her respect him more as a teacher.

Merlin, you would think that Kesali was asking them to strip from the way some of her classmates reacted to the proffered robes. Raine had quietly arrived and hung her satchel- clothes could be replaced, hence the alternative was avoided. Her tie and prefect badge were safely tucked away. Slightly more difficult to replace, those.

The prefect dropped into a spot on the bench next to Sorin, smirking as their professor took off a handful of points from Slytherin.

"I hadn't realized that Travers so highly valued our uniform..." Raine muttered as she rested against the wall with a wry smile. Childish. This was a NEWTs class, one had to be ready to get their hands dirty. Or sleeves, whichever.

Not waiting for instruction, she had drawn her wand- and held it carefully as one would a rather sharp knife. It was a relief to no longer be practicing memory charms. Those had been so boring and not to mention uncomfortably invasive. Raine crossed her legs, eyeing the two elder wizards patiently.
