Physical Description: Sybill has long, brown, kinky hair, green eyes, and pale skin. She is tall and skinny and usually has on a long, gauzy dress. She also wears a thick headband with bits of fabric dangling from the sides to hold her hair from her face. She wears many necklaces, bracelets, and rings decorated with sparkly jewels and beads. She wears glasses that greatly magnify her eyes, making them look much larger than they truly are. Her voice is soft and whimsical, but can change to sharp and harsh if she is angry or in a prophetic trance.
Sybill uses very elaborate and over exaggerated hand movements when she speaks. She seems to often glare into space even when speaking to other people. She comes off as timid or paranoid at a glance, as she holds her hands clasped tightly to her chest most of the time and is constantly trembling and looking quickly around her surroundings. She has been referred to as looking like a large, glittery insect.
Personality Description: Sybill is a very eccentric woman. She almost always seems to be in her own little world, looking around at things that no one else can see in an almost paranoid fashion. She moves in a theatrical manner that seems rather bizarre. She has a hard time distinguishing if people like or dislike her.
She loves her practice and takes it very seriously. When other students show a great interest in her class, it makes her extremely happy. If a student seems to be having issues in the class or seems to lack any kind of potential, she pities them. She gets incredibly angry when students don't take her class seriously. Divination is more than a class to her. It is a way of life and something that defines her very being. She takes her prophecies seriously and is under the assumption that they are always right, although she has been wrong many times.
She tends to be a little sensitive at times. When she is being ridiculed or put down, it is not uncommon for her to burst into tears. She loves her students and Hogwarts and will defend both of them to the death if need be. She is a generally nice person and loves teaching.
History: Sybill was born a pure-blood three generations away from renowned seer Cassandra Trelawney. She inherited Cassandra's wand when she was eleven and received her letter to Hogwarts. She felt completely at home there. She was a member of the Slug Club because of her ancestry and in her third year she took Divination. She got very high grades in her OWL and NEWT exams.
1980- Sybill had been making false predictions, but arranged a meeting with Dumbledore in Hog's Head. She hoped to get the position of Divination professor and was allowed to because of her ancestry. Her classroom was in the north tower and preferred to stay there, even during meals. Her biggest habit was making death predictions every year for at least one student.
1992-1993- She gained Harry Potter as a student. She made a couple vague predictions during the class that proved to come true. It wasn't until these predictions came true that she started to gain some trust from some of her students. She also saw the Grim, an omen of death, in Harry's tea leaves. During the exams, she entered a trance and predicted that Voldemolrt's servant would be released and would return to Harry that night. She did not remember going into the trance and her prophecy, again, proved to be correct.
1995-1996- Delores Umbridge was appointed Hogwarts High Inquisitor by the Ministy of Magic. Umbridge approached Sybill in her classroom and demanded a prediction. Not impressed with the results, Umbridge put Sybill on probation. She was incredibly upset by this and changed quite a bit becoming very brisk and taking on a more dismantled appearance, presumably due to her starting to drink large amounts of cooking sherry. After Harry Potter stood up to Umbridge, she started predicting good things for him instead of the usual death. She was eventually fired by Umbridge and almost thrown completely from the castle. Dumbledore insisted she stay at Hogwarts, partially to protect her from Voldemort because of her abilities. McGonagall also came to her and helped her back into the castle. She was replaced by the centaur Firenze, but was reinstated after Umbridge was suspended. She had to teach along side of him, much to her disdain.
1996-1997- Sybill and Firenze split up the years to work together, her getting the fifth and sixth years. She was so humiliated because of working with a “horse” that she continued drinking. She kept her cooking sherry in the Room of Requirement. She spend Slughorn's Christmas party that year drunk and sad. In March, she demanded Dumbledore fire Firenze. He, of course, refused.
1997-1998- Voldemort took over Hogwarts and made Snape headmaster. Many of the teachers were replaced this year. Because she was pure-blood, she was permitted to continue teaching at the school. She participated in the Battle of Hogwarts by dropping crystal balls on the enemies' heads and using her wand to throw crystal balls at the Death Eaters' heads.
The Second Wizarding War war happened and Sybill survived. She continued to teach at Hogwarts under new headmistress, Minerva McGonagall. Firenze was welcomed back to the Forbidden Forest Centaur colony so Sybill, happily, continued her career finally teaching alone again. She took a leave of absence from the school which took her along an incredibly spiritual path. She is now returning to the school she has loved for so long and considers home.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: As Professor of Divination, it is Sybill's duty to teach her students the different ways of divination and the ways to use them. She is incredibly quirky and eccentric and sometimes her techniques border along the insane. She takes her class completely seriously and expects students to follow suit.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: Sybill is familiar with the known methods of divination, though she only teaches a few. The ways of divination she teaches her students are
cartomancy,
crystal-gazing,
dream interpretation,
palmistry, and
tessomancy. She was often looked at as a fraud, although almost every prediction she made came true. She predicted the death of Dumbledore and the Battle of the Astronomy Tower with her tarot cards. She had second sight which allowed her to go into her prophetic trances. Despite her reputation, she was incrediblygifted. Sybil is also able to cast spells and charms without incantations and is skilled in dueling.
Examples of Prophecies Major-Sybill's first prediction to Dumbledore was that someone was coming who could defeat the Dark Lord. This was proven when Harry Potter defeated Voldemort.
-Sybill's second maor prophecy was that the Dark Lord and his servant would be reunited. This was said to Harry through a prophetic trance and she had no recollection of it afterward. This prediction was proven true as well when Peter Pettigrew escaped and returned to Voldemort's side.
Minor Prophecies-She told Neville Longbottom to take a blue cup because she liked the pink ones. Neville broke two cups after this.
-She told Parvati Patil to beware of a red-headed man. Ron Weasley ignored her through the Yule ball and later started dating Parvaiti's best friend, causing them to stop speaking.
-At the beginning of the '93-'94 school year, she said one of the class members would leave forever near Easter. Hermione quit the class close to easter.
-At Christmas lunch, she refused to sit at the table because in a table of thirteen, the first to stand would be the first to die. Since Peter Pettigrew was still in disguise, there were already thirteen at the table. Dumbledore was the first to stand, and the first to die.
-Her prediction to Deloris Umbridge was that she saw dark events in the future. Umbridge was later imprisoned by the centaurs in the Forbidden Forest.
Writing Sample: Rayven was so happy when she saw Walt walk in. Her face gleamed when she saw him and couldn't help the smile that surfaced. She lightly blushed when we winked at her and had to hold back a giggle. She was happy that he was in class with her. She would have been happier if -he- was the one sitting beside her, but she knew it was for the best he wasn't. It probably would have distracted her to no end if he was beside her for the rest of the semester.
It was shortly after that when Fig opened his box and the powder went everywhere. She looked at Walt when he started coughing. She was so grateful she had scooted back enough to not get hit by the mess. Then Walt knocked his box in the floor. Unfortunately, since the box was close to the edge of the table, it fell right beside her as well. She covered her face as the powder billowed up and she felt the crawling sensation on her legs. Wearing a skirt, it made her a little more vulnerable to the creatures referred to as "fire ants." She bent down and started to scratch her legs as she felt the bites and started scratching more as they seemed to travel up her legs and then her arms.
"Well... I was fine... and I didn't catch it... until you knocked yours over right beside me!"
She kept scratching, her fingernails leaving red marks along her arms and legs. She couldn't be mad at him. It wasn't his fault after all. It was just an accident. If FIG hadn't opened his, none of this would have happened and the class would be perfectly fine!
"Dammit, Figaro! Look what you've done! It's a chain reaction now!"
She knew Hufflepuffs had a bad reputation for being the clumsy and not graceful in the least. Considering it was Fig who started this mess, it didn't help them at all.
