Physical Description: Sacha-Anatole is of average height at 5’ 11’’. The elder gentleman is however at a weight some would call below the norm, especially considering his age. Despite this he doesn’t come off as frail, and if anything his very straight posture seems to give him a preternatural strength.
Sacha-Anatole’s face usually is host to a cool expression. It takes a lot to make him break his composure. Despite his stoic expression he has many lines on his face, and his cheeks just don’t have the spring of his youth anymore. His eyes are a velvety blue color that gets dark whenever he gets angry. His skin isn’t particularly pale, but he is far from being tanned. He is always clean shaven.
Perhaps the most defining trait of Sacha-Anatole is his silver quiff. The mess of hair does what it wants but always manages to look fashionable. Sacha-Anatole tries to keep his clothes as fashionable as his hair. He prefers black dress robes with a white shirt. The only exceptions to this are when he wears the Beauxbaton’s colors. He’s also been known to wear subdued but exquisite jewelry. A pinky ring here, and a nice time piece there, nothing as ostentatious as necklaces or bracelets. He likes a good sensible shoe that will hold up and look good when polished.
Personality Description: Sacha-Anatole d’Aubigne is a very calm man. He’s not easily excited, but that does not mean that passion does not burn inside of him. He’s a dedicated practitioner and researcher in the school of Charms, something that has held his interest for many decades. He also loves to paint and write, as well as read and admire the art of others. With his friends and colleagues he is an even tempered sort of fellow that is nice to have around when one wants to have a drink and discuss intellectual things. He isn’t the type to party though, not anymore.
To his students he is known as a man of standards that seem impossible. He is the one who will either force you to succeed in ways you never thought you would, or to just give up forever. He does genuinely care about the future generation of Beauxbaton alumni, and only is so difficult because he knows it is how he will make them successes.
It takes a lot to get an angry outburst out of the man. He’s more likely to remain stone face in his anger, but if his brow furrows and his velvet blue eyes grow dark a storm is about to be unleashed. On the flip side of that coin he does smile, just not for very long. Even when he is enjoying himself his default facial position is an even look.
While not a boisterous person, he will let someone know when he is superior, if only to give them a fair warning. He’s also not an ostentatious person, but he does enjoy the finer things in life. And though he has worked hard in his lifetime, he enjoys a bit of leisure from time to time as well.
History: Sacha-Anatole was born on a cold day in January in the year 1946. He was the youngest son of Neil and Anais d’Aubigne. Though his family held an opulent ancestral château, Sacha-Anatole was born in the family’s palais in the old wizard quarter of Paris. Sacha-Anatole’s parents were both getting on in age by the time he was born, and he was considered a happy accident. Sacha-Anatole had older siblings that by that time had moved out of the house and most of them had started their own families. Sacha-Anatole’s parents were known supporters of Grindelwald, but since they didn’t lose anything after the Dark Lord’s defeat and since Sacha-Anatole was born after his defeat, Sacha-Anatole never understood the seriousness of the blood politics.
While Sacha-Anatole’s parents liked to make frequent trips back and forth between their palais in the city and their château in the country, Sacha-Anatole preferred to stay in the city even as a child. Whenever his parents were away he was raised by the servants of the home. Because of this he developed a strong sense of independence even before he ever went to Beauxbatons. As a child he instructed in the basic courses that any pureblood of standard was expected to know. When he was left to decide the course of his own day however, he enjoyed being chaperoned to the great monuments in the city. Sacha-Anatole always felt a kinship with his city of origin. He found himself to be a Parisian first and anything else, including a pureblood or even just a wizard, second. His connection to Paris caused him to think of the city like it was a creature vast and powerful. It was a titan to him, something he could converse with. Though it was something his parents did not fully grasp, it was something they did not fret about either. When Sacha-Anatole was still young his family started to grow as his siblings had children. In his childhood years these nieces and nephews were often his playmates.
Then eventually the time came for him to go off to Beauxbatons. While at Beauxbatons Sacha-Anatole was quite the student. He was infinitely interested in the fine arts, charms, and even did well in classes that did not interest him as much. He already had a firm grounding in many of his collège level classes. This was done through tutoring on magical theory as a child, as well as etiquette classes, and his own forays into the world of the fine arts.
It was apparent before Sacha-Anatole ever took his tests to determine his specialization when he moved onto lycée what he would be taking. Sacha-Anatole excelled in the school of charms like few others. He desired to animate the world around him. It went back to the feelings that his precious Paris was alive. He was also deeply immersed in the fine arts, being a voracious reader, as well as a prolific painter. His lycée years weren’t all just school work and art though. He was also a popular student at the school. Coming from great means meant that his friends were always others of his station, and they partied and spent their parent’s money like it was the end of the world for the entire time he was there. He had many relationships while attending the school, but none of them lasted very long. By the time it came for him to graduate it seemed he would be doing so with no strings attached to any person.
Once he’d left Beauxbatons Sacha-Anatole found himself with a lot of job offers but no real inclination to work, at least not at the time. He instead spent his time right after school traveling abroad and painting. Not long after he did that he started dueling as well. He’d always excelled at dueling in his Alma mater, but professional dueling was a new thrill all its own. His parents, both quite old at this point, did not approve of his lifestyle. They threatened to blast him from the family tree if he didn’t go out and get married and have children like siblings, but relented after a heart to heart with their baby.
It was around this time that Voldermort started his rebellion in England. Sacha-Anatole found himself mortified when it came to light that nearly his whole damn family was Voldermort supporters. Sacha-Anatole didn’t need to be told that purebloods were superior to the lesser bloods, or that wizards as a whole were superior to muggles. This was an accepted fact to him. But the brutality of the war in England was something he could not support. There was also the fact that it was a British rebellion, not a French one, and as far as he was concerned they should not become involved. Not only that, but he saw the works of art created by the muggles. He’d born witness to their majestic monuments and powerful paintings, the works of art were an integral part of Paris. If there was one thing that Sacha-Anatole could not stand, it was something that threatened his beloved home.
Sacha-Anatole moved home to his parent’s palais in the city. He got a job in the political body of the French Wizard Government, and worked tirelessly during those strange times to keep France out of English affairs. All the while he continued his passion for dueling, becoming a renowned master duelist by the time the First Wizarding War of England ended. Once things had calmed down he decided to leave politics. He had many family members sitting in prisons, and more than a few had died during the time as well. He decided instead of living the rest of his life as a stodgy politician, to go and have some adventure.
Sacha-Anatole spent the next decade adventuring around in the strangest and most secluded locations on Earth. He compiled massive amounts of notes on charms used in these hidden places, as well as on the art, architecture, and cultures. Once he got his fill of adventure, and being sick constantly, he made his way back to Paris. Once there he went about writing a massive treatise based off his notes entitled “Profonds Arcanes”. The thick tome was heralded as one of the greatest works ever on the subject of the forgotten charms of the world. It also expanded upon the same of Sacha-Anatole, who was already well known in France for being a Maître Duelliste.
It was right after this time that Voldermort rose for a second time. This time Sacha-Anatole did not use his familial ties to become part of the political system, but instead used his fame to lobby the Ministry to stay out of English affairs. During that time period Sacha-Anatole also authored a couple books of poetry, and would host exhibitions for his art and the art of other artists he enjoyed. After Voldermort was defeated permanently and things started to return to normal in England Sacha-Anatole effectively retired.
Much of his time after the Second Wizarding War of England ended was spent patronizing galleries and salons. It was only after Madame Bisclavret took over as the Headmistress of Beauxbatons that Sacha-Anatole decided to leave his life of leisure. With her ascendance to Headmistress Madame Bisclavret left the position of charms professor open at Beauxbatons. The position has always been considered a great honor, and many of his friend’s insisted that he take up the role. After giving it some thought he decided to offer his services to the school, the offer was quickly accepted.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: As the instructor of Charms at Beauxbatons Sacha-Anatole, or Monsieur d’Aubigne as the students call him, holds a very prestigious position at the school. As such it falls on him to not only instruct his students in the school of charms, but to also push them in general to be the best that they can be. Because of this he has quite the reputation of being hard on his students. Though he cares a great deal about the students, he has earned every bit of that reputation.
To the younger students he focuses on building a good grounding in wand movements and the pronunciation of spells. As the years increase so does the difficulty of the class. Anyone who falls behind can expect a lot of remedial work to catch up. He doesn’t make it easy on his students at all, but once one reaches his higher level classes it becomes worth it. Sacha-Anatole teaches his older students a wide plethora of charms. He assumes however that their grounding in the fundamentals of the craft will be quite good. Anyone who managed to slip into his advance classes without a firm grasp of the fundamentals will be given remedial work until they either improve to above the standard, or drop the class.
Sacha-Anatole also offers dueling lessons to any student who wants to train under a Maître of the art. He offers top grade for any student who can best him in a duel. None have had that honor yet.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: Sacha-Anatole’s performance as a top student of Charms while attending Beauxbatons alone probably qualify him for the role. He supplements that with being a Maître of the art of dueling, a profession that demands one not only have a wide knowledge of charms, but excellent form as well. He’s also written a tome on forgotten and esoteric charms that are used by wizarding communities in the remote parts of the world. To top it off he’s been using a variety of charms to improve his paintings ever since he learned how.
On the political end of the spectrum Sacha-Anatole comes from a very old family that has ties to many other old and powerful pureblood families. Not only this, but many of his friends from school have grown up to be dignitaries, Ministry officials, and other positions in wizard society’s elite. Not only that, but Sacha-Anatole is a celebrity in the French wizard world. All of these things combined would of given him plenty of clout to vie for the position even if he wasn’t perfect for it.
