When Young Wizards Go Murderous

by Niobe Thursby

Hogsmeade - Kyle Gibson, 17, has been identified by nearly five hundred eye-witnesses of murdering Auror Benjamin Timmons and Wizengamot Elder Leon Carter.  In an apparent rage, the wild-eyed youth stormed the dais during the Memorial Ceremony this Remembering Day.  Immediately, he struck down Timmons with a powerful bit of dark magic, then proceeded to throw himself and Carter from the platform, two stories to the ground below.

Kyle Gibson was in his seventh and final year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when the crime was perpetrated. Hogwarts Headmaster Knox Greyfriar looked dismayed when he was interviewed, having this to say:  "This has been tragic for Hogwarts and for Britain. Kyle Gibson was an angry boy, yes, but his actions have shaken us all.  I want to say that I had no idea he was capable of something like this, but I can't."

A fellow Gryffindor, Michael Jaymez seemed to disagree. "You can quote this, Kyle Gibson may be in the running to out due the famous Weasley twins in mischief here at Hogwarts, but he is a Gryffindor, I can't believe that he would murder anyone, we have been class and house mates since our first year here and he has never done anything to make me believe that he could murder anyone."

Not all of his classmates were so eager to defend him.  Jasper Quinn, from Slytherin, said, "I can't believe nobody noticed the warning signs of a murderer sooner, and I hope something is being done to make sure this mess doesn't happen again. Gibson's always had a temper and been rather good with a wand, but I don't think anyone ever expected him to do this. And, for the record, Gibson's not a Slytherin. Slytherins have far more class, thank you very much."

What does the future hold for the youngest murder in fifteen years?  Minister of Magic Annwyl seemed very sure.  "Kyle Gibson is wanted for questioning for his actions during the Remembering Day ceremony. Tamis Raynor will be heading up the investigation and the manhunt. We will find him."

But an anonymous letter to the Daily Prophet indicates the case is not so black and white as it might seem.

"In the sea of normalcy and complacency that has become Hogwarts, it's an honor and privilege to hear that there are still students willing to make a statement.  We certainly do hope that such a brave accomplishment was, indeed, the young man's own.  We believe it's important the young man knows there are those of us who would tip our hats to him and who consider him a true asset to the Wizarding race. There are many of us, in our fraternity, that fully understand the challenges life on the underbelly of the law can bring and fully sympathize with our fledgling brother.
Mr Kyle Gibson, there is help and support out there if you need it."
