Physical Description:
Jethro is of average height for his age, though looking as if he's pushing the line into "tall". He's thin and lean, but years of sports and random brawls have given him well defined muscles. He's got a healthy summer glow almost all year round, a product of good genetics and a tendency to be outside at all hours without getting too dark or burning. He's got slightly curly hair, a soft sandy colour, and all in all is pretty easy on the eyes. Except for one feature, his eyes. Jethro has a condition called heterochromia which means that his eyes aren't the same colour, and a complete one. Which means the colours aren't remotely the same. His left is a pale blue, and his right a dark brown, nearly black. Coupled with the fact that Jethro likes to observe and rarely smiles, it's down right creepy to see at times.
Personality Description:
The first apparent thing about Jethro is probably that he's an observant person, and very much a contradiction. He prefers to sit in the background and observe situations and people before getting himself involved. On the other hand, once he's decided to involve himself, he's pretty rash about a lot of the decisions he makes and reacts according to the moment, not how it will affect him later. He's got an excellent memory, and the sort of person who won't yield or let things go. He may offer his forgiveness or seemingly drop an issue as if he's forgotten it, only to pop up months later to toss it back at them in the form of a harsh, ill intended prank. Though, part of his rash temperament means he tosses those pranks around on whims as well. He also won't let an act of kindness bestowed upon him go unnoticed for long.
Jethro is incredibly loyal once he deems somebody is worthy of friend status, but such a thing is so difficult to get it would be hard to pin down if you're not very observant. Aside from almost making the other person jump through hoops, Jethro tends to clash with people over the silliest things that nobody registers as worth the effort. He can be downright moody, and is very jealous and possessive of the people he has loyalty to. No matter how ridiculous, he doesn't appreciate having to share someone who worked so hard to gain his attention. Since Jethro is so entirely unyielding in his way, while he's pretty adaptable to new situations, once he's made a decision or gained a certain viewpoint, it is virtually impossible to change his mind. You'd have more luck teaching a candlestick to talk, than you would having him change.
Aside from that, he's incredibly ambitious and unable to take certain thinks too seriously. Hence the pranking. He views school as a stepping stone into getting where he wants to go, and while he has a controlling trait that won't allow him to do poorly at it, he doesn't care for it or care to make lasting attachments to anyone.
History:
He was born to Janey Gallagher and Glynn Delaney in Dun Laoghaire, as part of the upper middle class, and lived just outside of the rich area in a modest but fairly large house. He was raised as an only child and a rather "unhappy accident" as it were. His sister was disowned from the family for being a squib, and is already into her early 20's. As a result of his birth, his mother needed to return to work, and his father needed to work longer hours. It caused a bit of resentment amongst the family, and as a result of this upbringing and his Irish temper, Jethro was a bit of a loner.
His favourite place of solace happened to be a fairly large park which children of the middle class and upper class both had access too and played there. It was one such average day when he ran into Orlaith Dewar, almost quite literally, and she bought him an ice cream. The only act of kindness he'd ever received from a child of the upper class, and as a result the two were fairly inseparable since. Orlaith was bullied a lot because of her small stature and more likely than not for hanging around with someone like Jethro. His explosive Irish temper and dislike of bullies in general forced him into the role of protector, which in turn has made his friend fiercely loyal to him, despite his less than stellar attitude.
It however, didn't take long for things to change, the most significant being Orlaith's relocation to Brighton, which left Jethro alone with a family he cared very little for. Of course, having magical outbursts allowed him to know that he was in fact, not a squib like his sibling and that sooner or later he'd be getting his letter to Hogwarts, which his best friend must as well and it was only a matter of time before the situation righted itself. The thinking worked better as thought than in practice. Despite finding their own hide away, which they were used to doing, Hogwarts didn't suit Jethro. Not really. He found a lot of things that made school 'fun', in any term for the word for other people was completely and totally uninteresting to him, or relied so heavily on socializing that Jethro couldn't be bothered.
Orlaith did try to integrate him properly into his house and the people who were deemed worth speaking to by any pureblood family worth their salt, but the harder she tried, the more annoyed it tended to make him. School was just a stepping stone. It was halfway into their second year before there was a sizable distance between them. In third year, the gap had only gotten wider with a chance encounter with Finn Vipond. His friendship with Finn would be lasting and most definitely changing, for while Jethro and Orlaith relied on a system of mutual compliance and compromise and biting their tongue during annoyances when appropriate, Finn and Jethro ran on a system of conflict and harsh arguments and an odd sort of confidence.
Keeping the two friends of his happy and trying to keep them from running into each other so he didn't have to deal with the headache that eventual blow out would cause, took more precedence than his homework. In all his years he seemed to only do passably well in any assignment, but tried no harder than that. The only important things were OWLS and NEWTS, and like with everything else, until they happened, he was only spending time.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?:
While he has the trait for loyalty, Jethro would probably crash and burn in any other house. While he's ambitious, a fine trait for Slytherin, he doesn't really care for school or studying. He knows he's intelligent and he tries when it matters, however, it's the fact that he won't put in effort otherwise which would make him unfit for Ravenclaw. While Gryffindor's can be rash in their bravery, it doesn't fit him either. He doesn't fight or stand up for [the few] people out of courage or any desire to do the right thing. It's a matter of instinct and almost a survival of the fittest sort of thinking. It's this and his cruelty in the way that he fights back that makes him most definitely unable to go into Hufflepuff. While he's not particularly rich or full of pureblooded pride because of it, he does want what comes with the prestige of having been in that house, and the knowledge that he'll get what he needs from it.
Writing Sample:
The fact that Jethro was bored, was a bit of an under statement. The fact that he couldn't stand to be anywhere in common room when it was crawling with people, wasn't exactly a secret. So why was he here? His traitorous friend had dragged him to the Christmas afternoon celebrations, arguing that the few people who had actually bothered to stay on for the holidays, wasn't "crawling with people". Jethro disagreed. Finn actually had the nerve to say it was fun. All he saw were a bunch of students he had nothing but a house and pureblood in common with. Laughing and bragging over their assortment of presents, drinking and eating whatever they hadn't managed to finish at the Great Hall, or were gifted to them by their parents.
Stupid, was the thought at the forefront of his mind. Who honestly cared? They'd probably gotten silk robes trimmed in ermine, or maybe a crystal goblet, or the fastest broom available, custom designed for their use. But bragging was useless when you were bragging to people with all the same things as you, and after awhile, that sort of expensive gift just piled up. After the tenth racing broom probably lost it's appeal. Not that what Jethro was getting for Christmas was any better. In fact, he hadn't even opened it. Just pushed it off his trunk with his foot and went about his day as if it wasn't even there. It wasn't that his parents didn't have money for something nice, it was the fact that his parents had bothered to get him anything at all. It was similar to buying for a stranger.
He'd acknowledged Finn's present, but he hadn't opened it. Jethro had spent a good deal of time trying to school him in the art of pranking, and while checking the gift for enchantments would cause a row, and then a headache he didn't want to have to deal with, it was something that he would be better off doing. He wouldn't put it past his friend to do something to it. He'd just have to wait till he had some time alone. He couldn't decide if it would cause another row if it ended up being something ridiculously expensive, or if it was something dirt cheap. Their friendship walked a fine line, and an afternoon like this? Was pushing it.
Shoving himself away from the wall, he said in a very deadpan voice, "If this is your idea of fun, I suddenly feel very sorry for you." Which was the exact time, several of the occupants in the room started growing certain creature features that they hadn't had there before. Jethro grinned a bit lopsided. "Alright, that was a bit fun."
Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Jethro is ambitious, focused and unyielding. He's completely unsocial and prefers to be observant and make judgments on people based on that, than what they've got to say. He's not really a liar, but he has no qualms doing it if he feels it'll get him somewhere. He's very contradictory, in the way that while he's unyielding he's also pretty rash and adaptable, depending on the circumstances. He's playful in a cruel sort of way, and also doesn't have any qualms in playing pranks whether or not the person was deserving of his ire. He's also not very discriminatory in this manner. He'll prank members of his own house, if he feels in the mood for it.
