Pensieve Sorting Snapshot
Do you remember when?

Dlee / Deus Deres asks...

I was thinking a Snapshot of when your character was Sorted? Some of our firsties/second years  got to do the deed live and in-game, but we have a bunch of adults and older students running around and I think it might be fun to see "where they started"--the aurors, the criminals, the very-much-changed and the still-such-the-same. Did the Sorting Hat dither? Decide right away? Did your kiddo speak up? Stay silent? Scared? Excited? Were they muggleborn with no idea if Ravenclaw was good or bad--pure or half and hoping to go where Ma and Da went?

I think most of us have a Hogwartsian somewhere! And if not, any kind of peek into a moment long ago—we often wind up so very different from when we were eleven. Or maybe not ;)

We at Absit Omen agree!
Raise your wands, pull out that silvery wisp of what once was - then post here!  Curious as to who is in your sorting class? Check out Generations at the Lexicon!

This is an Absit Omen role-playing challenge! From time to time, we'll call upon you movers and shakers to direct your substantial imaginations towards some type of in-character challenge.  Take the prompting and incorporate it into plots or threads new or old.  Then, when you've accomplished this lofty task, respond to this thread with the fruits of your labors! A link, a quote, and a few words on how it went.  Naturally optional, no prizes - just grit and glory!

This is amazing.

When I think of Minerva, I usually think of her as an old woman. I think very little of her past and her youth, simply because there's so much of her in the present. She's a commanding woman, with a powerful life, and that's usually the way one thinks of her. This challenge was truly challenging for me, and I want to say thanks.

The Sorting of Minerva McGonagall

Working on this snapshot really helped me to think of Minerva in other ways than one might, and it's an amazing tool for character development. I really really enjoyed this challenge.

Michael, what a pleasure to read young McGonagall! You're absolutely right in all you said.

The Sorting of Deus Deres

I do feel that Deus is a true Son of Slytherin, but have often felt if things were different, just a little bit different, those odd traits that put him together may have manifested somewhat differently. But he was already a hardened little eleven year old, and I'm not sure, under the affected mannerisms of the years, he's really changed. Fun stuff.

The Sorting of Rosie Pendlewick

Significantly less of a challenge XD

Dlee, thank you for this. Working on this snapshot helped me keep my sanity during a very long and very boring plane ride home.  :)

The Sorting of Alvis Norling

Funny thing about Alvis is that he doesn't actually remember any of this. Because of his little mental problem and the Hat's poking about, his consciousness picks up in the Ravenclaw dorms the next morning with a splitting headache and no memory of the previous night, which is not a situation that eleven-year-olds find themselves in very often. He's since filled in the blank spot with a false memory of almost passing out on the stool.

The Sorting of Aileen Reid.

Of course, she'd never admit that the hat threatened her with Ravenclaw. Oh the horror!

Aisling's sorting

She was such a quiet little thing then.

The Sorting of Addison Rockwell

This was fun to write. I actually drew inspiration from Elle for writing Addison at her sorting ceremony from this quote:

Aileen imagined that as a first year, Miss Rockwell had likely been one of the rare well-behaved ones (with occasional bouts of giggling).

I so happened to agree with her completely, and thus incorporated that into my writing.

Enjoy!

And so, the Hufflepuff was born.

I gotta hand it to everyone writing these, they're coming out really fantastically! And I just couldn't leave my fourth year in the dust, she practically begged me to write this.

Chris's Sorting

Okay, I finished Chris's sorting as well. His was a little harder to write, since he is out of Hogwarts and everything. But, his was still fun to write, with a little peak at his relationship with his sister.

And, Deaglan's sorting.  I found myself spending a good bit of time pondering to what degree muggle history really impacts school/culture of the wizarding world.  To what extent the Irish war of independence and civil war, not to mention WWI, would have spilled over into student interactions.  This is also the year Phineas Black passes away so there would have been a transition from a rather purist administration to Newt Scalamander.  I would love to do more of these snapshots.  *looks to Niobe and Madam Hooch*

I have Flynn's and Maiko's done! I'm not sure if I'll do Juni and Zel's yet though. It was a fun writing exercise-- it's so weird for me to write for my characters when they're that young. :)

Tapendra's Sorting

Great challenge idea, Dlee!  8) This was a lot of fun. May give Dion's a shot in the next week or so.

Dlee, this idea is so awesome that I have ever so briefly emerged from my hiatus to participate.

Aberdeen's Sorting
Pax's Sorting (Yes, I know Pax existed when his Sorting Ceremony took place on the board, but we never did get as far as W. ;) )

It's been really interesting to read the Sorting experiences of other characters as well! I love how Tappy and Aileen referenced each other. ^_^

*vanishes back into the shadows*

Someday, I will get those Yule Ball posts I've been meaning to write done. Today is not that day. Instead I got the bug for this:

An Inauspicious Beginning -- Beit Gaddol, Jerusalem, 1984

I don't think anyone's ever mentioned exactly how the Beit Gaddol students get appointed to their houses, but if I'm wrong...whoospie my bad. I just thought this set-up was suitable because inscribing their names on the scroll indicates that they're joining the school as a whole, while the House is a secondary notation. It seemed appropriate? IDK, the idea just wouldn't leave me alone.
