Phillip Caleb Kinsey: Gryffindor, 7th year

    on January 03, 2013, 06:53:53 PM

12 inches in length, made out of Larch wood with a Dragon Heartstring core, Phillip's wand is nothing out of the ordinary. The wood is a bit inflexbile and it has  a knobby surface indicating his strong and stubborn personality. The wand chose Phillip from the first try, it is a simple, classic Ollivander wand.
Tall and lean, but not overly skinny, Phillip definitely attracts looks wherever he goes. Standing at six feet and two inches with a tuft of messy white bleached hair, high, accentuated cheekbones, his pierced lip and ears, the cold glare of his blue eyes, the combat boots and state of disarray of his clothes, he sends a warning that clearly states "Don't come near me". However his delicate lips and nose, the brush of freckles on his nose and cheeks, a glistening white smile and an infectious laughter, soften his appearance and attract positive glances from the fairer sex, and sometimes the boys as well. He really doesn't mind either.

As a kid he was scrawny and lanky, walking with a slightly hunched back and a big stride, however he grew into his looks once he reached his teen years. He still walks slightly hunched, due to his height, but he now walks more confidently, nonchalantly, with his hands in his pockets, whenever one's not occupied with a cigarette. His love of punk and indie music shows in his clothing style at all times, even when in his uniform. He always wears combat boots, not even if he knows if it's a fashion statement or the practicality of them in a brawl. He never tucks his shirt in his pants, which earned him more than one point deduction, he can't stand the tie tightly  around his neck, so it's always hanging around half untied, the pants make him itch and he can't stand the cut of them, so he usually alters them magically to be tighter and tucks them in his boots, and he will not be caught dead wearing the vest. When he is out of school, he wears jeans, usually rather tight, and old band t-shirts that usually miss the sleeves and, of course, a leather jacket, because that's what punks and bad boys wear, right?

He has a throaty voice, rather deep but pleasant with a slightly boyish tone to it. He's not a man of many words, but when he raises his voice it can be thundering, however he prefers to use his voice to whisper... not sweetly, but rather dirty, into the ears of unassuming, innocent girls. His speech relies heavily on Mancunian slang and has a thick Manc accent. Half of the time he finds himself having to explain what this word or that means, usually he gets frustrated and stops talking at all calling them "mithering twats" and "del boys". He lacks any sort of manner and refuses to learn any, as long as people can understand each other through language he sees no need to alter his behavior.

He knows he's handsome in a way, but he never cares much for it. He likes to keep people away and he expresses it through his appearance, but he does welcome those that manage to see behind the looks and approach them regardless. He is, at times, bothered by his height, for practical reasons. He's rather undecided if he's happy it makes him stand out or quite annoyed for the same reason.

His childhood and the environment he grew up in, had a big impact on Phillip. Everywhere he goes, trouble finds him, but more often than not, you could say he actually seeks out trouble. He has a lot of trust issues, especially with females and authority figures, and has no problem showing it. The counselor of the muggle school he attended before Hogwarts, had labeled him as "prone to disruptive behavior", she said it was his way of rebelling for everything he'd been through and demanding the situation be changed. But even after he was freed from the life with Margaret, he still continued to act out. If he would've remained in the muggle world, he'd probably be in and out of a youth detention center. He enjoys trouble in some ways, he does like the adrenaline rush coming from a fight or a dangerous situation, but he doesn't look for it if it means hurting somebody that doesn't deserve it.

He feels caught between two worlds: the muggle world and the magical one, not really feeling at home in either. But with hist past, he knows he'll never be able to return to the muggle world without straying towards dangerous paths. He still doesn't really take the wizarding world seriously, and he's rather oblivious to a lot of things. He misses a lot from the muggle world, and finds many in the wizarding world ridiculous or simply doesn't understand them. He's conflicted and it causes even more aggression in his behavior

He's obviously rather insecure and feels the need to cover it up in the only way he knows how to: through violence. But he has a big heart, he doesn't make friends easily, but those that he does make, are his friends for life. He's loyal and protective towards them and he will always be there for them. He also has a sense of... twisted justice, he will help out the weaker or abused in situation where those in a more advantageous position would harass them, and he usually does it through violence. But only if the situation is rather bad, as he doesn't like to involve himself in situations that don't involve him personally. He mostly keeps to himself and his friends, but once in a while he enjoys being the center of attention, often telling randy jokes in the common room and teasing his colleagues.

He has problems with professors and other people in positions of power, as he feels most of them abuse their authority or finds them unfit for the position. He very often talks back to his professors and questions their authority, but to those few that really know how to get through to students without mistreating them or taking their jobs lightly, he holds a deep respect. He has a lot of issues with females, because of his mother's behavior, and despite being very active in his romantic pursuit, he doesn't trust them and never forms an emotional attachment to them. He knows women can be very dangerous if they so desire, and prefers to keep himself on the safe side. For precisely this reason he has few female friends, and most of them are rather tomboys or more libertine from a point of view.

    C h i l d h o o d

Growing up in the slums of Manchester with an alcoholic mother and no idea as to who his father might be, have made Phillip's childhood to be a rather grim and unfortunate one. His mother, Margaret gave birth to him at only 16 and only in hopes of tying her boyfriend Caleb at the time to herself. Caleb however left her the moment the baby was born and Margaret spiraled down into alcoholism and recreation drug use. During the first three years of his life, Phillip was mostly left with Margaret's friends or acquaintances while she worked and spent her money for various debaucheries. As early as kindergarten Phillip had shown signs of being a very smart kid but with a disruptive behavior. He often picked on other kids and refused to listen to any sort of authority figure. His behavior got worse as he started school. Strange things occasionally started to happen around him: when he'd get angry things would break, sometimes things he'd wish would come true and other such strange occurrences. He became even more introverted, fearing someone might find out and started causing more trouble in school. He often ditched classes to work various jobs in the shady neighborhood, like making deliveries or cleaning cars, despite the fact that some of his professors tried to cultivate his intelligence. Margaret was getting worse and worse and he was often left to fend for himself for days at a time, with his mother coming home only to leave him some money.

Sometime during his second year he managed to make friends and he proved to be a very loyal friend, it was then he met Michael, his future best friend, also hailing from the shady part of Manchester. He often used his... brawling abilities to fend for the weaker and held those without scruples in high contempt. He kept on ditching school and maintained his grades at a very low average, despite the fact that he really enjoyed some of the subjects and reading about them he was never present enough to be able to do better. At nine years old he discovered his passion for underground music, and he spent most of the money he made on mixtapes of the latest punk, rock and indie hits.  By the time he was ten Margaret only came home to check on him once a month. Michael's family took to watching over Phillip as their own son, they understood his situation, and despite wanting to alert the authorities they knew with his behavior he'd be much worse if he were to be taken from Margaret. So they ended up covering for him when he'd need an adult, legally as his mother was nowhere in sight over 80% of the time and neither did she want to hear about him, and his school problems.

In Year 6, the strange accidents started to get worse and he started panicking, thinking they might start happening around other people, or that he would hurt his friends. However, on the night of January 21 2003, at the exact time he had been born he heard a knock at the front-door. When he opened the door he saw a rather intimidating-looking man. Large with a beard and completely out out of the picture of the dirty neighborhood. He wanted to talk to Phillip's mother. The boy frowned at that, everybody knew Margaret didn't really live there anymore, so this must've been someone that wasn't very close. He promptly explained that she wasn't home but then the man said he'd talk to him as well. He invited him in and sat at the kitchen table.  After what seemed like an eternity, when the man was finished talking Phillip sat dumbstruck in the kitchen chair with his mouth agape, when he promptly started laughing. "You've got to be shitting me? Are you mad? Magical world? Wizards? Are you deranged, old man?" was the only thing he could say in his usual rude behavior. After quite some more talking, Phillip was starting to wrap his head around it. Yes, he was a wizard. He was a wizard?! That was rather fascinating and it explained the strange occurrences.

    H o g w a r t s  Y e a r s

As it turned out Knox Greyfriar, the man who had opened Phillip's eyes as to his own true nature, was a professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a boarding school where he'd be learning magic. It took some time and a lot of frustrations and anger and also a talk with the  Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee, to get Phillip out of Margaret's care without having an alcoholic junkie grow insane and threatening the statue of secrecy. But, finally, finally Phillip was free of her! He couldn't care less about wizardry at first, he was free of the slums of Manchester, free of the horrendous woman that was his mother and had a future... definitely not the future he expected, but a future nonetheless. Approaching the starting of the school year, Phillip was finding more and more about the wizarding world and all it was, he was still confused and felt completely out of place, and found them all weird or creepy. He was just glad he was out of the slums.

He was still the boy from the Manchester slums, even if he was now at Hogwarts, he adapted well to the magic part, but he'd never be the golden boy. His grades were still average, he was still ditching classes, this time however, to practice his guitar, and he was still as conflicted as ever, given his childhood. He found it odd, that he didn't have to work to support himself, he found the dorms annoying like hell, having lived alone for the better part of his life, he found the prejudices towards muggle absolutely infuriating and eventually realized humans are still humans, whether magical or not. He continued to get in trouble, often getting into fights, and being so muggle he often rather used fists than magic, he thought it more satisfactory.  He still had absolutely no respect for authority figures and was overly distrustful of adults in general, which earned him quite some house point deductions and therefore the glares of his housemates. He never understood why that old hat had sorted him into Gryffindor, after he'd researched on it...

By 15 Phillip had grown into his looks, and he was rather handsome. But, being the rebel he was, he decided to bleach his hair, get some piercings and tattoos which earned him some more point deductions. But the girls were noticing his bodily changes, and he was rather enjoying their furtive glances. Given his trust issues and growing up with Margaret, he never quite attached himself to either of the girls, but he was definitely turning into a womanizer. His success with the girls also brought some attention from some of the guys, and his friends circle grew. He wasn't one to judge, so he easily made friends with those that were different from the others, more like him, without ever taking age, race or house in consideration. For the others, however, he was still the rude, muggleborn bad boy.

He was growing more accustomed to magic, but he was still reluctant to use it. He found most of the classes that involved actual wand use to be too foreign, he was more attracted to Potions and Herbology, they were more familiar, more grounded to his muggle roots. And by his sixth year, he was actually very fond of Potions and found it was also a good source of income. The girls in the castle were always on the look for good quality beautifying potions and other such cosmetics. And now that he had cut all relations to his mother, he had absolutely no income, so he was once again pushed to work for his money. Either by making potions, or smuggling various illegal things into the castle, such as alcohol and cigarettes, and  other stuff that could only be bought in the muffle world. By word of his smuggling connections he managed to get a summer sort of job, working during breaks at Donovan's doing whatever might be required of him: cleaning, heavy lifting, errands and occasionally on weekends, working the counter. Now in his last year, he has no idea what he wants to do with his life... He can never see himself going back to the muggle world, but he still feels like an alien in the wizarding society.

Despite his rough appearance and projection, behavior and insecurities, Phillip actually has a big heart, and for those that are patient enough to see under his carefully constructed mask, he is a good and loyal friend. One of his better attributes is often his downfall as well, the boy knows no fear, and will put himself in whatever trouble, if merely for the adrenaline rush. He can't stand seeing the weaker get treated badly, and he will often stand up for them, often through violence. He really is a Gryffindor to the core, but he never really realized it, or rather he refuses to.

By most, Phillip could be labeled as a punk, or a hooligan... and a womanizer. He's violent and has a disruptive behavior, seeking for trouble and adrenaline rush. But all that is just a mask that he has carefully built over the years due to his traumatic childhood, growing up in a very poor neighborhood of Manchester with an alcoholic mother that has mostly left him to fend for himself his entire life. He has raised himself, and for that matter, at times he may appear a little savage. However, he still has a big heart and he shows it by being a very loyal friend to those few that dare to tread in his life. He's a smart man, but he finds no purpose for academic accomplishments, and it shows in his results. Being a muggleborn, he still struggles with his place in the wizarding world, knowing, however that he will never be able to return to a life without magic. He's not exactly all bark and no bite... No, Phillip's more like a cat: he's selfish, lazy and dangerous with sharp claws and absolutely no reluctance to use them, if you gain his trust,  he might even learn to like you and allow you a scratch behind the ear or maybe, even a belly rub.

    Career Change: Phillip Kinsey

    Reply #2 on March 05, 2015, 01:36:23 PM

    Career Change
    Approved! - Kit
    Character Name: Phillip Kinsey
    Character Biography: http://absitomen.com/index.php?topic=13088.0
    Previous Job/Position: 7th Year Student
Position Applying For: Potions Apprentice; Commis Waiter

Why have you chosen to change careers?:
For a long while, Phillip hadn't the muggiest about his future. But then came tha' brazen hussy, Juliette Vaillancourt and after her, that knapper Di Luca, and it was clear to him that despite his many'a shortcomings, Potions was a thing... his thing.

The problem was finding a Potions Master who was essentially a tapper, 'cause no one else would've accepted him for an apprentice. Turns out the fates were a-smiling on him. Di Loco had left Hogwarts. It took precisely 125 owls and 113 returned death threats over the course of a month to eventually convince Di Loony to take him on.

Problem was, she wasn't gonna give him a stipend. Rick was going to run with the circus and go back to where it took him 7 years to escape from, so that left him with nish in terms of means o' living. When in need, one turns to frightful blondes who just happen to own a club-restaurant-thing. Thus begun the great adventure of Phillip the Errand Boy cum Slaveboy. Or commis waiter and potions apprentice as Arianne and Lucrezia lied about it.

Elaborate on your expertise in this new field:
Contrary to popular belief, Phillip Kinsey is in fact not a barmpot. Well, mostly. But he managed an O on his Potions NEWT and that was no easy task under Di Loony. Plus, he had a knack for it, for how ingredients mixed, for how they entered as individual pieces and left part of a whole. That and he really liked explosions.

As for his other job, Phillip has been working odd job since he was 7, being a busboy at a fancy restaurant-nightclub-thing was easy-peasy as opposed to some of his other jobs. Like working anywhere near Knockturn Alley. Or Rick Donovan for that matter.

Describe your new job and how you go about doing it:
As a Potions Apprentice, Phillip's most important task is to listen and learn. And essentially to do every little thing his teacher asks of him. Even if it involves disemboweling poor dead animals. On a daily basis. By which one means, procuring all the ingredients, preparing all the ingredients, and yes occasionally whacking one in the head. Studying and assisting his master are, in short, his two main duties. But those are rather vague terms and prone to many interpretations.

Luckily for him, as soon as the clock strikes five in the afternoon, his other job starts. One that is much, much easier to understand. As a Commis Waiter at "Le Masquerade", Phillip's  duties include clearing tables, taking dirty dishes to the dishwasher, setting tables, and otherwise assisting the more experienced waiting staff. As the youngest member on staff and Arianne's own favorite form of entertainment, he is sometimes required to do other various odd jobs.
