The waltz found itself winding down, the dancing slowed, and as the last of the champions twirled and danced from the hall, Minerva made her way sprightly to the podium. Held tightly in her hand was a slip of parchment, and the feeling of anticipation permeated the air. The student body had been curious for days about the results from the second task, and pry as they might, the ones that actually knew the answer held their lips as tightly sealed as a gnome once it’s clamped down upon an unsuspecting finger.
Ancient though it was, the podium before her held a magic all its own. When one stood in the spot of power, it seemed as if the whole world was at one’s feet, and the world listened. Not a sound was made as the elderly witch found her place before her pupils and raised her wand. With a wave, the lighting in the hall blared to life, throwing light into the far reaches of the room, whereas the spotlight had been focused on the dance floor as the champions had their time to shine.
“The Tetrawizard Tournament is a time for us all to come together,” The headmistress of Hogwarts said, voice carrying easily across the vast room. “Whether we be in times of peace or strife, the tournament allows for the greatest witches and wizards of your generation to come together, to prove your worth, and to learn more about the world around you while you’re at it. Though it’s not always easy to find friendship through competition, I’m confident that each and every one of you will come from this experience a better person.”
“If I can keep your attention for a few more moments, I’d like to announce the scores from the second task, and then we’ll proceed with the ball,” She paused, and with a dramatic flourish, clapped her hands once. At once, all the Hogwarts banners across the hall shimmered and their colors swirled into a vortex. When the colors slowed to a stop, sitting in place was the crest of Salem Institute. “Coming in fourth, with
51 points, Salem Institute!” Another clap and the banners returned to their original state. “Third place is Hogwarts, with
63 points,” Now the banners changed once again, filling the space with the graceful crest of Beauxbatons. “At a very close second, we have Beauxbatons Academy, at
65 points,” With a final clap, the commanding Durmstrang banner took over the room, casting the glow of their earthy colors. “And in first place, we have Durmstrang Institute, earning
83 points for their school!”
She paused after every announcement, allowing the crowd to applaud and groan simultaneously, but when the Durmstrang winnings was announced, the din was almost unbearable and it took Minerva a quick
sonorous to make her voice heard above the noise. “Well done, Durmstrang!” She called, clapping politely, though it was pretty obvious that she wished Hogwarts had been the victor.
“As things stand currently, we have Durmstrang in first, with a total of
325 points. Followed by Salem with
289 points. Then it’s Hogwarts with
269 points and coming in last, but certainly not least, is Beauxbatons with
214 points. Congratulations to all, and now let's enjoy the evening!” With that, Minerva stepped back from the podium and left the room in an uproar. The band started playing again and the headmistress ignored the complaints that Minerva hadn’t given away any information about the third task. They’d simply have to wait.
