Francis Rafe Sellaphix
Character Birthday & Age: 29 May 1998
City & Country of Birth: London, England
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn: Halfblood
House & Year: Ravenclaw First Year, now Third Year
Wand: 9.5 inches, phoenix tail feather, maple, "snappy"
Physical Description:Frank is slight and fair with shaggy very-blonde hair. (Mrs. Sellaphix is sure both her boys' hair will darken as they grow.) He likes to keep it long and down in his eyes even though his parents are constantly on his case with a sharp word and a snipping charm.
He's got a large-ish nose, big ears and dark eyebrows. Frank's favorite clothes are Quidditch jerseys and trainers, but is quite proud of his school uniform now that he's at Hogwarts. Many kids his age tend to recoil at being told what to wear, but it never really bothered Frank who might wear his uniform on a weekend out of habit. He does rather like that blue and gold tie...
He's a fast talker, and his accent is a touch muddled - his mother is from Manchester but they all live together in London. His voice is still very boyish, being only eleven.
Frank is an active kid and pretty sure of himself on his feet. He's not yet grown self-conscious about his body, and would rather be moving if given the chance.
Oh, and he
hates being called Francis. At the start of the year, when all the Professors called his name in roll call, he loudly corrected them. "It's
Frank." Not Frankie. About this, he's quite particular.
Personality Description:Frank is thoughtful and rather likes to be contrary. Any question or statement is an opportunity for him to try and be the strange one, to be unexpected. Ask him to think of an animal that starts with E, he says echidna. A country that starts with D? Djibouti. He really enjoys not only having the answer, but having the most unique one.
He's an agreeable boy and was raised by parents who were pretty strict. He's polite with adults and knows what the rules are. But his politeness isn't so far as him being considered a suck-up. His politiness is almost automatic in a way, rather than true deference to authority. And at his age, with his background, rebelling hasn't yet crossed his mind. He's still used to staying 'Yes, ma'am," and standing in lines and raising his hand.
There's some sadness to young Frank though - just last year his dad was sent to Azkaban prison and the entire affair with the arrest and the trial and the family sinking down a few notches - all of it took a toll on him. There are times when his homesickness is quite strong. That, and there's a naggling debate in his head about fairness. If he doesn't get is way or he feels justice hasn't been done, it can send him up into a fit.
With friends, Frank is easy and kind, but a little bit of a follower. And when faced with adversity, he's still quite fragile and prone to tears. But he's also resilient with the right support and will wipe his eyes and get back up without too much lasting damage.
(As much as he admires his big brother, he doesn't like to be compared or conflated with his reputation. He likes being his own person and mostly tries to avoid Figaro at school, wanting to prove his independence.)
History:The Sellaphixes live in Marylebone in London, in a modest rowhouse on mostly-muggle Montague Road. The family has always subsisted from their small but successful family-owned apothecary in Knockturn Alley - mostly respectable despite its location, but not very well-frequented for the same reason.
Frank was born the second child nearly five years after Zelda and Rafe's first. A surprise, certainly, but not a mistake, and something they'd assured him when big brother Figaro would tease. Growing up with a big brother was largely a good thing - Frank learned the ways of the world from Figaro and learned to read
very quickly, well ahead of his peers. Figaro would read to him all the time for fun and so Frank was at an advantage there.
Frank was also at an advantage learning all the best swear words and soaked up his brothers interest Quidditch like a sponge. But where his brother lost interest in books, Frank never did. He read all the time, mostly books on animals and dragons from the library, and his mom's herb primers and plant almanac.
For most of his life, the Sellaphix home was tame and orderly. There was a solid routine and even when Figaro left and came home for holidays, things were mostly the same as they'd always been (if not a decible or two louder). When the boys weren't in school the whole family spent the time at the apothecary, each of the boys having tasks from the time they could read a list or hold a broom. Frank always enjoyed helping and proving to his parents that he could count beetle eyes without squishing them, and touch the porcupine spines without getting quillled.
But everything changed when Frank was 10. Around October that year, their dad was arrested for trade violations, and a few months later was sent to Azkaban prison. Frank was devastated as anyone could expect. The whole family was shaken to the core. Now sole responsibility for the running of the home and business fell solely onto Frank's mother. Now, Zelda Sellaphix was a capable businesswitch and just as much a part of the business as her husband, but to have to shoulder such a heavy load and grieve at the same time was no easy transition. Frank bore the brunt of that stress since he was home with her and Figaro was off at school. Her words were short and he could never quite do enough, being so young. While perhaps Figaro only saw the strongest side of his mom, Frank saw the tears and ate the hurriedly-prepared dinners in front of the wireless.
A year has passed since then and the Sellaphixes are adjusting to this new reality. But Hogwarts! Frank's letter came that next summer. Frank was well prepared for Hogwarts when the time came, already desperate for it having had to wait four years since his brother left. His mother let him practice a bit that summer before his first year, only if she could supervise, he was so anxious to begin.
A sorting into Ravenclaw was a surprise to Frank who assumed he'd be sorted like his much-admired bigger brother into Hufflepuff. But he wasn't phased and has had a fun year totally immersed in Hogwarts life. He loves all his classes, he loves going to Quidditch matches, and is rapt with the Tournament.
Classes: Core Classes

How Do You Fit Into Your House?:It may yet be seen how exactly Frank fits into Ravenclaw House, but the hat knows what he's doing. Frank's interest in having the strangest answer to any query, or finding the ambiguity in even the most straight-forward claims, is the seed of a greater curiosity and instinct to think outside of the box and approach things from a new angle. Frank also clearly loves school (unlike his older brother), a trait very common to Ravenclaws.
Sum up your character in one paragraph:Frank is a smartaleck Ravenclaw who loves to be quick with the answer you weren't expecting. He's thoughtful, talkative, and a good student. He's got not head for conflict though and is struggling with concepts of fairness and justice.
