At twenty-nine years of age she is the youngest ever Department Head, beating out the controversial Analiza Snark of the Department of Mysteries. Snark was thirty-five when she gained the position. Covadonga Ashwin Gertrudis comes from a very old pureblood line. The Ashwin family is well known for their involvement in both the First and Second Rising of Lord Voldemort in supporting the dark lord. Gertrudis is the first female relation of the Ashwin family ever to hold a Ministry position, all her maternal ancestors having served as wizarding nobility. The Ashwins directly descend from King Athelstan the Glorious of the House of Wessex who reigned in 927. “Of course our daughter would reach such an esteemed position in her field,” her mother, the daughter of Ashwin, Elizabeth Gertrudis sniffed, “even though it may cause her to smell ungodly, ruin one of my good dresses and have my jewelry pecked off whenever I happen to drop by.” Gertrudis’s paternal side of the family claims relation to Maria Gertrudis Bocanegra de Mendoza de Lazo de la Vega who, though born in Mexico in 1765, was a child of Spanish parents and named after a wizarding branch of the clan. Minister of Magic Marcus Annwyl declared, “I think she'll be a fine addition to the already impressive Department Heads we have in the Ministry of Magic. She has more than earned the position, and loves her job.
