    Wand:
On the day of September 17, 2008, Akiva Katz went to Ollivander's and replaced her destroyed wand.  The nine inch wand in made of cedar (love and protection magic) and has a natural stain only intended for protection of the wood, the natural color is of a rosy variety.  The core is unicorn hair, like her first, and has a smooth shaft.  The wand is especially supple and plain, but comfortable. The choosing magic was a swirl of blue and white sparkles from the tip that looked something like smoke, very calming and pleasant.

Her original wand (nine and one half inches and designed to have a very smooth surface.  Supple, oak with a red varnish and a unicorn hair core.  Obtained from Ollivander’s and upon receiving it, the pages of Mr. Ollivander’s business directories uncurled and repaired) was stolen while she was kept in captivity by Cinead Tawse.  It was used against her several times and ultimately was used to destroy her memory and is the weapon in several illegal activities.  It was destroyed and Akiva has not replaced it as of yet.

    Physical Description:
Akiva has been, on more than one occasion, called pretty.  When she was younger, she was always kind of chubby and gawky, but never repulsive.  It was a strange mix, with a pretty face but a less than perfect body; she never really offended or alienated anyone.  She always had a beautiful smile, and still does; to this day, only it is now more mature.  Her lips aren’t large or small, much like most of her features, though her nose is rather pinched and she thinks that it could be seen as being a little bit too small for her face.

However, attention is taken away from her nose to her big, brown eyes and full eyelashes.  She adores these features, as well as her long, blonde hair, which is not altogether natural.  When she was small, her hair was a dark brown; however, upon turning nineteen, she decided the change would be worth it and hasn’t gone back since.  It matches her skin tone better than her brown hair ever did, in her opinion.  As for her body, Akiva is neither tall, nor short, but rather an average height for a woman.  At five feet and six inches, she doesn’t tower over anyone and she isn’t a little person, by any means, and her weight is to match.  Her lifestyle doesn’t exactly suit an extensive amount of exercise, but she moves around enough and does things on her own time that keep her in a moderately good shape.

Fashion, for Akiva, isn’t paramount, but is something she enjoys.  Working, for her, should be in something she feels like is professional and fitting for her job.  Granted, she tries not to be flashy, but she has a certain style about her that is feminine, but still fitting to work in a professional environment.  Her most common outfits utilize skirts and dresses, however, and she is not a fan of pants, unless she is lounging around at home or wearing something that requires it.

She received several scars over the course of a nine day stay in captivity, including a deep cut across one of her palms and a brand burned into her right wrist.  The brand is the insignia of an underground, pureblood movement - but this has yet to be identified.  To make up for it, a thoughtful gift of ten bangles do the trick.  She wears one each day to cover up the offensive mark and has gone back to her natural hair color: brown.

    Personality Description:
Full of life and passion, Akiva Katz is someone who circumstances really can’t bring down.  She’s got a naturally outgoing personality that recommends her for working with people.  Akiva also has a warm and loving sort of attitude that really draws people in, and she honestly cares about what people need.  It makes her a great person to go to, especially when one needs to get something done fast, she’s just got the energy and the amount of care it needs to get it done quickly and right.  She’s got a fascinating ability to organize and find things at the drop of a hat, which means she’s efficient, a skill fostered from being such a good student and worker.

There is an eagerness to please in her and Akiva is more than willing to drop what she is doing to help someone who looks like he or she might need it.  She’s got the maternal instincts, but finds herself so busy she doesn’t give much thought to dating or marriage or anything of the sort.  Sure, she thinks about it sometimes, especially now that she’s approaching thirty, but it isn’t something she obsesses over.  She feels like her life is fuller than that and Akiva prefers spending her time on more attainable ventures anyway.  Part of this is because, although she is exceptionally friendly and outgoing about her work, in her personal life she is very shy and bookish, and more than a little naïve.

Part of Akiva’s inner-nerd has never died.  She can go on and on about different books for hours and not realize that another party would be absolutely bored to tears about it.  She’s passionate about almost everything she does and attacks everything with equal zest, even if she doesn’t like it.  Granted, she won’t be as happy about it, but she finds ways about doing things that make them more bearable.  From her youth she has always had an optimistic way of looking at the world.  Her faith has always been something that has guided her through and although she is not quite as strong in it as she was before, she still puts stock in the fact that there is something greater than everyone and there is a grand scheme of things even if people can’t see it.  That, in and of itself, is probably one of her most recommending features, and she tends to project that even if she is not having a good day.  When Akiva is having a bad day, she tends to act as though she isn’t upset at all – however, she projects her feelings on her face quite vividly.

There is a bit of sass under all that sunshine and bubbles, however.  If someone things that they are better than her or treat her job and her merchandise like it is inferior, she isn’t afraid to be a bit snappish.  Akiva also dislikes when others are treated like inferiors, making her try and treat everyone as an equal.  She is a bit touchy about her status as a non-graduated student of Hogwarts and doesn’t like when people mention it, much less use it to qualify that she is not good enough for certain things.  She feels like she is just as good, if not better at her job than a lot of people could be and she gets very defensive about her position.  She knows it takes a lot of patience and organization to do what she does, and often she feels like she has to be very well versed in the material she handles so that she can help others with what they are seeking out.

    History:
Born to Nora and Isaac Katz, Akiva’s home life from the beginning was a happy one.  Isaac was a mathematician by nature, and always surrounded himself with theory and practice.  As a professor (not in a particularly prestigious university, but a professor nonetheless), he truly enjoyed and understood his work, which kept him and Nora from having any children until it was clear they only wanted one.  This one child, Akiva Katz, was (is) their pride and joy.  They raised her in a moderately religious home, celebrating Passover and Hanukkah and going to the Synagogue once and a while.  It was never a very strong ritual presence in her life, but she does carry some of the lessons of her upbringing with her now.

She grew up multilingual, learning English, German, Yiddish, and the Hebrew required of an English girl.  She can write, read, and speak both; however, she doesn’t often use Hebrew: there is no need unless she is working with a Middle Eastern text, and even then, very few are written by Hebrew witches and wizards.  It seems that more come from those with a background in Arabic.  The only time she really uses it is when she is talking with herself.  It’s much easier for her to mask conversation in another language, or just keep track of things only she need worry about.  Some might consider her father's math a third language, but Akiva is not very well minded about the language, and although she has tried, just doesn't seem to understand it.  Apparently, brilliance with numbers did not run in the family.

Many of her childhood years were spent with her parents and her grandmother, a sweet old woman with stories Akiva almost never believed.  Chava would tell Akiva stories of her husband and Akiva’s grandfather, Samuel Isaac Katz.  He was a grocer in Berlin and when WWII rolled around, he sent his pregnant wife to England.  Sensing trouble, he didn’t want to see his wife and child hurt, so he stayed behind and worked, sending them money to help pay for a house and food in the new country.

However, Chava and Isaac stopped receiving money.  Samuel had been marked as a Jew and sent to a concentration camp.  He was killed in 1945 in a Nazi death camp. It left Chava heartbroken and alone with a son, however, she had their life savings and she opened a small grocery store to gain money to raise her son properly.  Akiva loved the stories she heard and although she never met her grandfather, she grew very close to the idea of him.

Her admiration for his strength and determination, as well as selflessness when it came to his family made Akiva proud.  She wanted to be just like him.  She wanted to stand up in the face of adversity and no matter what keep going.  When her grandmother would tell her that he was always watching her and always with her, Akiva came to believe that he was forever walking with her.  He never left her side and she thusly began to talk to him every evening before bed (in Hebrew, of course), and it became a ritual she would keep forever.

After turning five, Akiva began to display odd tendencies.  Whenever she would become angry things would fall over and break, things would rattle, it unsettled her parents; however, they always found a way to explain everything.  The dog knocked it over, a cat jumped on the counter, and all of them were excuses used very frequently.  They brushed it off to pursue her education, teaching her all sorts of things in her most influential years.  Quickly learning to read and appreciate books, Akiva showed signs of brilliance at a very young age, and made her parents proud.

But, at age ten, everything changed.  She received a strange message, inviting her to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.  It had explained all that had happened, the strange things that happened when she got angry and other phenomenon around the house.  She was instantly curious and her parents couldn’t refuse.  There was no way to quell her growing interest in this world she had never heard of outside books.  And Akiva pursued the wizarding world with an open mind, taking in everything and basking in all the new things to learn and experience.  A natural curiosity for life filled her and from when she first entered Diagon Alley to getting on the Hogwarts Express, she felt as though she would never get there.  But, she did get there, and was instantly drawn in.

And, to her best benefit, Akiva was sorted into Ravenclaw. It seemed to be the perfect place for her.  Although she wasn’t quite as much of an intellectual snob, she just embraced education.  There was nothing about it she did not like, and any subject she attacked with vigor.  Even her least favorite, Care of Magical Creatures, was gone at with a passion.  Even though she knew she would never do anything with animals, it didn’t matter – she learned it for the sake of learning it, to have that knowledge.  This kind of attitude put a lot of Akiva’s hours in the Hogwarts library.

It became a sort of second home, and she began to learn everything about it, the way it ran and the things that went on behind the scenes.  Talking to Madame Pince, Akiva actually formed a friendship with the librarian – something many could not manage.  In fact, to so many, Madame Pince comes off as harsh and unyielding, but to those that understand what she wants and how she does things, and respect her books, she is more than accommodating.  Plus, Akiva being a naturally quiet sort didn’t hurt either.  Their friendship actually led Akiva to understand more fully what she wanted to do with herself.  She loved books, not only the content but the actual books themselves.

With her affinity for charms, she started to look up preservation magic and her research took some interesting paths.  Of course, things became a little more hectic and hard as time wore on.  Being of the generation facing the problems of the day, Akiva was not directly in the center of the conflict, but she was involved.  Being Jewish and actually having a family member involved in the Holocaust, well, through the lens of the present, Akiva was able to look at the past with a swayed vision.  It was obvious to her that the parallels were there, and well, being a Muggleborn, she wasn’t going to let it scare her.  So, Akiva was doing her best to do anything that might help as well as keep her studies up.

It got exceptionally hard, especially in their last year.  Akiva was very careful to stay as long as she could.  Unfortunately, this wasn’t very long.  Under the pressure of the oppressive kind of institution being run, she dropped out, but not before exchanging information with Madame Pince to keep up with everything going on.  She moved back to London with her parents, but continued to do whatever she could to learn.  Naturally, Akiva also had friends in the institution as well and was able to keep up through a network of communication to get through the tight barriers.  When things hit the breaking point, specifically the Battle, Akiva was ready to do whatever she could.  Although she wasn’t present for the actual battle, Akiva came back after.

During the time she was not at Hogwarts or actively involved in the wizarding world, Akiva was pursuing a degree in Applied Mathematics with a minor in physics at King's College.  Her father was able to pull some strings and get her caught up enough to go through with the acceptance process, and being faculty didn't hurt either.  She was very interested in all of it and wanted to pursue her interest in math, since she could not finish a magical education - it would provide a stable background for her in at least the muggle world, just in case.  While she was doing that, she was also keeping up communication with Madame Pince and eventually part-time (to start) at Flourish & Blott's while in school.

Keeping up her correspondence with Madame Pince, Akiva contributed to the effort to rebuild the library and try to help with the collection as best they could.  Now, there wasn’t too much she could do, but after attaining a job at Flourish & Blott’s, Akiva was able to negotiate some agreements and ship books and get donations from private accounts as well.  This continued for quite some time and Akiva loved her job.  Working at Flourish & Blott’s gave her access to books all of the time and allowed her to work with people as well.  She built up a very good personal relationship with a lot of customers and became a manager by the time she was twenty-two.  Sure, she didn’t graduate Hogwarts, but she certainly didn’t have a lack of knowledge about books and she was always very organized.

It was during this time that she met George Cartwright, a muggle politician who she fell head over heels in love with.  Thankfully, she was able to balance both lives, witch by day in the bookstore, and muggle by night.  The universe seemed to be falling into place for the young woman and she was positive about the future.  Their dating was always something she didn't really talk about at work, but her family and more personal friends knew of almost everything about it.  Some of them did not like George that much, but Akiva was sure he was the one: she even considered leaving the wizarding world entirely for him.  It wasn't until they were engaged that things became complicated.

George proposed to her on Christmas, 2005 (a holiday important to him and his family) and gave her two things: a beautiful ring and a Cocker Spaniel puppy of her own.  Akiva was thrilled and accepted, of course.  Five days later, at a New Year's Eve party, Akiva's world was turned upside down when she caught him in the bathroom with his new intern.  That was the end of it for the blonde, and she promptly broke it off and moved from her old apartment into a new one, closer to work and the wizarding world.  She began to think more critically about her life and what she was doing with herself.

During all of this, Akiva always kept up contact with Madame Pince.  Their letters were frequent and the exchange of books between the two was a marker of their friendship.  Akiva, while reading the paper one day, came upon the ad for a job in the ministry as a librarian.  Now, she worked in the bookstore for several years and had considerable experience with the Hogwarts library as well, but she wasn’t sure she would be given the position given the fact she was not able to finish school.  Writing to her mentor, Madame Pince promised to give Akiva a stunning recommendation, as did the owner of Flourish & Blott’s.  It would have helped if she had been able to graduate, but, with the considerable time Akiva had worked with books and stocking, shelving, organizing, and everything else, it seemed only logical that she could fill the position, and she was someone anyone could trust with books.

At twenty-six, Akiva applied to work at the ministry as a librarian.  After a nerve-wracking two months of waiting to hear about the job, Akiva found out that she was being hired.  This was one of the most exciting periods of her life, and despite the fact it was just a training period for the rest of the year, she was quick to put in her leave from Flourish & Blott’s (told there would always be a place for her if she needed it), and continued on to her new life.

Akiva made her way to the ministry and got her training during that year, learning the intricacies of the library and all the secrets that she had never been privy to before.  The restricted sections suddenly became open to her and things were even more fascinating than they were before.  Rare books were near her fingertips and she spent as much time working as she did studying everything and anything that she could come across.  She also got to get to know people and work with them, which made her ever happier to work and be involved: human interaction was always a very important part of her life.

The first year has been hectic, and Akiva spends many hours locked up in the library, basically her own little world.  But, she also gets the opportunity to travel to bookstores and cruise over different books to order for the stocks.  With so many things being written all the time, it’s necessary to always be on top of things and keep up with the catalogues of books for everything and anything.  It’s also necessary to be proficient in several areas and be able to help out the workers; Akiva’s personal expertise is in magical education, medicine, and criminology (things that just piqued her interest).  She has a much more active approach to the library than most librarians do, probably because of her youth, but she adores her work.

She finds herself very accommodating to people and she is more than willing to spare a smile and help to those that need it when they come into her sections.  There are, of course, more librarians than just Akiva for a place as big as the ministry, but she likes to think that she’s vital to getting things done and keeping things moving in the place.  She also likes to think she’s a friendly face amongst the older ladies and refreshing as well.  She’s been told that on a few occasions, actually.

During the course of her job, she has met a lot of people and has fostered relationships with some of them more than others.  Unfortunately, her whole life has not been filled with good relationship and she has dealt with the unfortunate part of crossing one of her acquaintances.  As part of a deal, Akiva was taken captive by Cinead Tawse and mentally abused with amounts of physical and psychological torture during her stay.  She was ultimately spared her life, but her wand was taken from her and turned against her.  Her memory was, for the most part, wiped of all memories of the stay, and she was practically starved and kept in conditions similiar to those a sewer rat might enjoy.

Being dumped off on the last night of the Woodcroft festival, Akiva was found by Fauna Blake in front of the Shrieking Shack.  The entire event brought aurors in to move her to a safe place and to investigate the scene.  She was brought to the Hogwarts Healer's home and was taken care of in her preliminary stages on a bed in the middle of a living room.  The young woman was left in the care of Tulojow Nadge for a little under a month, where she was forced to cope with the recovery process and all of the things she had to deal with psychologically, where she had no idea what she had gone through but had distinct fears of certain things, foreign cups, eggs, and heavy boots, to start with.

There is no memory of what she had gone through to tell the aurors and the case is, most likely, going to run cold.  Her wand was stolen and there is no way to locate it, so she is currently without a wand until she can save up the money to afford a new one.  She was able to leave for her home on the thirteenth of September to try and readjust to her life.  It has yet to be seen how she is going to deal with going back to work and deal with her day to day existence after this dilemma.

What is your job description? How do you go about your job?
How did you get your current job? How does your past and abilities justify your current position?:

Akiva Katz is a librarian in the ministry.  She likes to see the position as vital, and she goes about the job with exceptional care.  She thinks it’s important to be up to date and current with everything, doing a majority of the work that she can do by hand.  She has a personable attitude about it as well, and although she isn’t harsh, she is devoted and passionate about books.  While attending Hogwarts, a majority of Akiva’s time was spent in the library and she formed a friendship with Madame Pince.  This continued for years and even after, Akiva was always willing to help out and do everything in her power to restore the integrity of the Hogwarts collection, using her position in the bookstore and with customers to negotiate some good deals for the school.  When Akiva got the chance to apply at the ministry, she was more than willing to help her out with a recommendation.  She thought she would be a good fill for the position and after applying and waiting dreadfully long time; she was hired.

She was hired because of her obvious skills in management, organizing, and overall intelligence about and concerning books.  She’s proved to be very skilled at book preservation and has a way with the text and people who need them.  Being personable, she helps the various people who come into the library when she can and had stunning recommendations from the owner of the shop, Madame Pince, as well as customers who had come in.  She has the intelligence and know-how to do the job as well as a personality that recommends her to working with people and being in an area.

    Writing Sample:
The top shelf was always a place less travelled.  In Akiva’s case, she was far less inclined to go there, but all the more likely due to her age in reference to the others.  Many of the other librarians were far older than the young lady and not interested in climbing ladders to take down books themselves.  Akiva preferred a more physical approach to the job; however, and needing a criminal index from the years 1970-1972, she wanted to go up herself, lest some kind of summoning spell damage the binding.

From the top of the ladder, Akiva was easily able to grab the book and tuck it under her arm, looking down at the eager recipient below. Apparently something was going on that they were itching for this kind of information in a more text based form, rather than a file, in the DoMLE.  Whatever the case, it wasn’t really Akiva’s business to know what was going on, but rather that she was quick to retrieve what they needed in order to aid in the search.  Of course, it was days like these where she regretted wearing a skirt to work.  Glancing down again, making sure she was in the clear, Akiva scaled down the rungs as quickly as she could, happy to step foot on solid ground again.

Smoothing out the front of her outfit, Akiva removed the book from under the crook of her arm and smiled at the young man sent to retrieve the book, probably an Auror in training.  “Here you are!” she chirped happily, “The Criminal Index of 1970-1972.  I’ll note it’s absence in the master ledger,” her mouth formed a sort of ‘o’ as she started to pat the waist line of her outfit, fumbling for the red varnish wand.  When she found it, she pulled it out of the harness and smiled towards the young man before flicking it at the ledger, the name of the book and its details being written out in Akiva’s curved, but neat handwriting.

“It’s not allowed to leave the building,” she prompted, the rules being very important, “and should be returned by the end of the day.  If you should need it longer than that, I can shelf it behind the circulation desk and it can be retrieved in the morning tomorrow,” a standard set of things she had memorized specifically for the job, but she did so with an enthusiasm that was not at all forced, but rather a standard of her day.  Of course, the youth did not look quite so thrilled and Akiva tilted her head to the side, “is there something wrong?” she immediately questioned, worried perhaps that he misunderstood.

“No,” he responded curtly, “We needed 1980 to 1982, not 1970 to 1972.”  He seemed a bit snappish with the woman, and he had no right to be.  After all, he could barely be out of Hogwarts and she deserved at least a little respect.  He thrust the book back towards her, holding it between them like a tainted olive branch that she was supposed to take back, her personalized touch of work being roughly handed back to her.  Pursing her lips tightly, Akiva regained hold of the book and looked to the young man.

“Ah,” she began, “I’ll be right back then,” she was short with him this time, and would remember this boy’s face.  After all, one was measured by how they treated others, and by treating her like that – well, she could tell he wasn’t going to get very far.  People didn’t respond to disrespect in a positive manner, and she might just have to mention it to a friend or colleague, just to warn them.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Akiva Katz has always been an optimistic and dedicated young lady.  Brought up in a loving family, she was benefited from it and they instilled in her, from an early age, the readiness and willingness to learn.  Her love for knowledge, education, and books themselves have propelled her through a few careers and the harder times in her life without ever getting down about it.  She has proved to be a hard worker and intelligent, despite her lack of graduation.  This has only made her even more eager to please and an even harder worker.  When the opportunity presented itself for her to attain a better position, Akiva took it and moved her work with text into the ministry where she is a vivacious and excited member of the library team. She is always willing to lend an extra hand or learn something new for the sake of her work and the people she lives with and sees every day.

    Character Name: Akiva Katz

    Previous Job/Position: Ministry Librarian
Position Applying For: Researcher for the MAO

Why have you chosen to change careers?: Akiva has decided to change careers based on her husband's creation of a new office in the DMC, and her own interest in what the office seeks to do.  Her experiences growing up as a muggleborn, with her family removed from her experiences and really unable to share most of what she was living in, except for the odd Diagon Alley trip, and then the Second War happening, she has a vested interest in the rights of muggleborns and muggles.  Additionally, having been a target of the WBA definitely motivated her desire to change and help make lives easier for muggleborns and their families.

Elaborate on your expertise in this new field: Akiva has been a librarian for almost three years.  During her time in the library, not only has she become familiar with the various types of materials and resources available for use, she is familiar with the structure of the library.  Other recommending skills she has is her experience helping others research and locating materials, even putting together research materials.  She is good at following directions, very personable, and diligent.  She's also a dedicated worker and willing to work hard and learn, which is important with something so new.

Describe your new job and how you go about doing it: Akiva is set to do whatever is asked of her.  Because the department is so new, she might move between doing several tasks, whatever is really needed of her, and she doesn't mind that - she takes direction well and seeks to be as helpful as possible.  When researching, her job will require her to collect whatever information is needed and compile it to be used most effectively by the person requesting it.  Additionally, she will move between the MAO and the library, collecting materials for others in the department.  Akiva is familiar with all of the structure of the library itself, as well as the staff, so she can get whatever they might need without too much of a fuss, or any additional training required.

Basically, Akiva is the woman with the books, and if you need information, she'll find it as quickly and efficiently as she can, so you can get your job done to the best of your ability! Always supportive and diligent, she'll do everything she can to help the department flourish and complete its goals.
