It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas...

    ...Everywhere You Go!

    • Life at the Ministry is anything but quiet as the holidays approach.  Level Nine gets together for a routine staff meeting that is anything but, and lawyer Evangeline Kuester torments old and new coworkers alike.  Auror Trainee Eha Farro takes some risks to discover what happened to a mysterious man in her past, while her fellow Level Two newbie Brett Abraham seeks advice when she fails a big test.  And reporter Niobe Thursby is confronted by an old almost-flame after she is arrested for Muggle-baiting on Halloween.

With the holidays well on their way, family is at the obvious forefront for so many magical adults.  A whole Quidditch team's worth of rambunctious children mean that Auror Ed Pratt's life is anything but easy: even going to the local pet store is a trial to test his sanity, let alone having his girlfriend drop by for a surprise holiday visit.  Tarron and Aisling Knight discuss the upcoming Yule Ball at Hogwarts, and Aisling reconnects with an old friend when she wanders into Morgana Hollingbury's shop.  Quinn MacAvoy has a surprising encounter with Felix Dagon, and Jacoba Schlagenweit discovers that she may be more connected to her adopted world than she thought as she tries out a new wand.

Things are still not right at Gringotts, where two Cursebreakers discover they may have been set up.  Mark Hunter tries to find out more about who wants him dead, but he might have made the wrong move by kidnapping Celina Holmes.  And Raizel Cohen and Adon Eleor get more than they expected when a quiet night abroad turns into a surprising ambush.

    Tetra Wizard Tournament Update

    • The second task of the TetraWizard Tournament has nearly found it's conclusion in the dark solitude of Hogwarts' subterranean chambers, with Salem and Durmstrang emerging from their tunnels first - but does that mean they'll be victorious?  And with the end of the second task comes with it celebrations and relaxation.  The year ends with a grand Yule Ball and the anticipation of who the Goblet will choose next year.

Do you want to help plan the Third Task of the Tetra Wizard Tournament, which will take place in January 2010? The Third Task will be entirely member-created.  Be a part of the team who will prepare the task in secret with the support from Curators.  Any active Absit Omen member is welcome to participate.   Third Task Creators will not be eligible to have a Champion in the Third Task.

To join the Third Task Team, PM Sarah/Niobe:)

    • Staff Changes

November has brought about some changes to the staff line-up.  A big welcome to new Curators Mel/Ed Pratt and Kelly/Maiko Biladeau-Yukawa!  We're excited to have them aboard and with a few more hands on deck we hope to be able to keep things rolling without delay.

We'd also like to take this time to thank Erika and Nuri.  Erika and Nuri both served us this fall as Curators and performed their duties admirably.  However, because of time constraints and other personal reasons, they've both recently voluntarily took their leave from the staff.  A big thank you to both of them!

And last but not least, Cody/Kelvin Watkins has been doing some amazing work at the wiki, leveraging his significant knowledge of the software to help organize the growing mass of member-created AO-Verse information.  Cody is hereby dubbed our Wiki Supervisor.  If you have any questions about the wiki, please feel free to contact him.

Avatar Registry: Two Items of Note

First: Earlier this month we accidentally ran the Avatar Registry through the wash and lost it.  Whoops!  But no harm done.  Mai/Sasha Schlagenweit has heroically been rebuilding it with your help.  Be sure to check the list to makes sure your avatar choices are accurately represented.  Bringing a character from Inactive to Active is a great time to double-check the list, too.

      From Mai:
There are still a few Active Characters who are missing from the newly rebuilt Registry.  Every character who's listed as Active or Inactive on the Cast of Characters but who does not have an avatar listed on the Registry has been sent a PM reminding them to check to make sure if they need to reclaim their Avatar.  To avoid accidental double claims, Mai has been holding off on approving new Avatar Claims but she'd like to be able to do so as soon as possible.

So we can start approving the new requests, if you receive one of these PMs, please either post in the Avatar Registry or reply directly back to Mai.  If you received a PM but don't use an Avatar, please let Mai know so she can make sure everyone's accounted for before starting to approve new claims.

Second:  We're making a slight tweak to the Avatar rules concerning the actors who portrayed characters in movies.  Previously, we've outright reserved those actors for those characters.  However, we'd like to make a little tweak.

Actors who portray characters in the movies may only be used by those canon characters, except
...when the canon character is canonically deceased AND the depiction of the actor is significantly different than how he or she appears in the movie.

For example, a younger clean-shaven Gary Oldman can portray a character at AO other than Sirius Black.

Open Major Roles: Head of Gryffindor, Professors & Department Head

Earlier this fall, with your help, we adjusted how we handle major roles at AO.  We have some openings, so read on to find out how you can get involved.

      Head of Gryffindor
Beginning today, we will be accepting proposals for the Head of Gryffindor house for a 2-week proposal period.  If you're interested, don't hesitated to submit your name!  If the two weeks pass with no response, the post will become first-come-first-serve.  Please be sure to understand the requirements for this role.

Please describe how your character's past and professional experience make them a good candidate for the role:

    • Hogwarts Professors
The posts of Hogwarts Professors of Potions and Herbology have been opened up for the term beginning in January 2010.  Exiting or new characters are welcome to submit their bios to fill the roles.  These roles will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis to the first acceptable candidate.

Professors must be considered experts in their field, at least 30 years old, and have at least 10 years experience in their field (although not necessarily teaching).

Remember, professors are considered a Major Role and have some stricter rules associated with them.  So if you're looking for a challenge and love writing class threads, this could be your chance!

Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Also open is the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.  This is also considered am a Major Role.

    Dobby Swap!

Perhaps no other character in the books better exemplified the spirit of love, selfless generosity and socks than did Dobby the House Elf, and so he represents our wintertime gift exchange!  We are very happy to announce that our long-time Curator and member Fauna Blake will be organizing our FOURTH annual Dobby Swap this year!
