The wand was Derry's grandfather's and was given to him by his uncle.  His uncle would have bought him a new one, but this wand responded well to the boy.

Physical Description: Derry has red hair, a white complexion, and freckles on his cheeks.  He is 5'7 and weighs 110lbs.  People sometimes accuse him of being too skinny, but he isn't.  That's just the way his body looks.  He has light blue-green eyes and ears that stick out.
When not in uniform, he often dresses in plaid shirts with blue jeans and converse shoes.  He began smoking with his two cousins at ten years old and can often be seen with a cigarette in his mouth.
He has a sweet smile and kind eyes that hints at the good kid underneath his bad boy ways.

Personality Description: Derry is a boisterous, fun-loving character that is rarely seen being serious.  He's a kind of class clown that often attracts the attention of others with his jokes and general silliness.  Underneath his cheerful character, Derry is an extremely sensitive and confused kid who has difficulty dealing with his emotions.  His joking and out-going nature is a facade under which he attempts to hide from his own insecurities.

At school, he is unable to concentrate and barely passes his courses when he does.  Derry is good at the practical, hands-on aspects of his courses, struggling with anything written or theoretical.  He's a great dueller and loves taking care of animals as well as plants.  As such, his best classes are Herbology, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Care of Magical Creatures.  The classes he struggles most with are Potions, History of Magic, Ancient Runes, and Astronomy.

Despite his bad boy and class clown reputation, Derry does put a good deal of effort in his studies.  The lure of having fun with his friends over studying is very strong, but all the same, Derry has made great progress in the last couple of years.

In terms of hobbies, Derry loves music and is a good guitarist, composing songs with ease.  He also happens to have a marvelous singing voice.  Derry also loves Quidditch and flying in general.  He has a Firebolt that his uncle gave him as a present in his second year at Hogwarts.  He quickly got accepted on the Gryffindor Quidditch team and became an excellent Seeker for Gryffindor.

Derry is a bit of a petty thief and sometimes steals money and objects of little consequence (or so he decides) from Hogwarts students and by-standers in Hogsmeade.  He has been caught and punished a few times at school, but he generally tends to be very discrete about it.  The reason for his thievery is mostly due to his poverty, but he had also developed a taste for the thrill of it from an early age.

In love, Derry falls hard for girls and has always suffered from unrequited love.  In terms of friendship, Derry doesn't make friends easily. Even if he makes people laugh once in a while, his boisterous and obnoxious character - as well as his bad boy reputation - tends to annoy and put people off more than anything else.  However, for those who do see some good in Derry, he is a loyal and kind-hearted friend.         


History: Derry was born in Dublin on November 1st, 1992, in the northern and impoverished part of the city.  Derry's father left his mother a couple of months after he was born.  His mother, Evelyn Flanagan, was an alcoholic and an emotionally volatile woman who would constantly yell at her son.  They were very poor, living on social welfare.  In that setting, Derry learned to steal food to keep his belly full and ran around with a group of kids who got into all sorts of petty mischiefs.

In the winter of 2002, Evelyn Flanagan moved back to her hometown of Ardnacrusha in County Clare when Derry was nine years old.  There, due to their poverty, they were taken in by Evelyn's sister Alana.  Derry then grew up with his cousins Shane and Finn, with whom he became inseparable.   

In 2003, Evelyn abandoned Derry to her sister and took off back to Dublin with another man.  So, in Ardnacrusha Derry stayed, forced upon Alana and her husband.  In a way, it was a blessing for Derry, as he was left with two adoptive parents that cared deeply for him.  His aunt was a soft-spoken, gentle woman and her husband, Kevin McKowen, was very kind to Derry, treating him as his own son.  While writing the occasional letter to her sister, Evelyn hasn't seen her son since she left him behind 8 years ago.

Derry didn't know that he was a wizard until he moved in with his cousins and aunt, his mother having told him nothing.  In Dublin, he sometimes experienced unexplainable things, such as escaping miraculously from the hands of authorities when engaging in his regular mischief (becoming slippery, squeezing into places normally too small to hide, or jumping inhumanly high as he escaped).  However, it wasn't until meeting his cousins that he learned about his magical heritage.

In his years at Hogwarts, Derry had difficulty fitting in and sometimes got picked on – although he quickly became excellent at defending himself. He sometimes received attention for his performances in Quidditch tournaments, as he was a fast and excellent Seeker.  However, for the most part, his only friends were Shane, his cousin of the same age, and Finn, who is a year older than the two of them.  He also has a special place in his heart for Teagan, whom he met in Ardnacrusha, Ireland as well.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Derry was chosen for Gryffindor because of his courage and loyalty.  Derry is courageous in the sense that he has went through a lot in his life without becoming bitter or angry.  He manages to keep a smile on his face and optimism in his heart.  Derry is also an extremely loyal friend and will stand up for them any day, even if it means duelling or getting physical Muggle-style.

Sum up your character in one paragraph: Derry is a sensitive, cheerful, and fun-loving boy who is often misunderstood and cast aside by his peers.    Derry loves flying and has a passion for Quidditch.  He is also very musical, enjoying playing guitar and composing songs.  He has gone through a lot in his childhood, but somehow manages to go through life with a smile on his face and endless jokes up his sleeve.  He is sometimes the cause of mischief, but deep down he is a kind-hearted and loyal friend.  Derry can be depended on to defend his friends and help them out whenever he is needed.
