Physical Description: Standing at just over six feet tall, Kohaku is certain that his height most definitely is from his mother’s side of the family, as his father was no taller than 5’8 (and that is pushing it.) His dark hair is short and wiry and occasionally bleached to be a lighter brown. Kohaku’s eyebrows are dark, thin, and completely archless. His face is round in shape, and his features are soft and gentle, yet masculine. He is incapable of growing facial hair, and has very little body hair as well. His nose is prominent and considered to be slightly larger than average, but it suits his face well. His hair is dark and coarse, naturally straight.
He is athletic and muscular—he enjoys cross country, track, and football (soccer). At a younger age, he was also a ballet dancer, but it was embarrassing for him so he quit. He works out at the gym on a regular basis, determined to stay in shape. Physically, Kohaku is very strong, and his build is a sharp contrast to his gentler facial features. Like his sister and his father, his skin is naturally quite tan, and he rarely ever burns.
Personality Description: Kohaku loves to debate, sometimes acting quickly on new opinions which leads to him defending incorrect beliefs with vigor. He is affectionate to those close to him, though those people are few and far between, as he prefers to keep many people at a distance emotionally. Generally, he is self-confident but prone to embarrassment—when he feels insecure, he has a tendency to become overly sensitive to the criticisms and opinions of others and may become moody. Kohaku is very dependent on the people he is close to make him feel secure, as he is not comfortable with change. However, he tries to hide this with sassy remarks and a deadpan sense of humor.
Much like his father, he is slow to forgive once he feels someone has done him a personal wrong. He needs much more time than the average person to get over being offended, and he has a tendency to bring back what someone has done in the past in current arguments. Kohaku is incredibly curious and is always yearning to learn new things—he has a fascination with the human body and it’s inner workings.
He is generally tolerant towards others, unless they annoy him during their first impression. Kohaku is an optimist at heart, but if things do not go the way he plans, he gets very disappointed in himself and on the others he blames for failures. He is very close to his sister, who is at times more like a mother to him than a sister.
History: Kohaku was born the illegitimate child of an Irish woman named Tarei Quinn and a Japanese man named Kazuo Yukawa in May of 1991. His parents had a brief relationship while Kazuo and his wife at the time were taking a break from each other and exploring new relationships. Kazuo and Tarei never became a couple, and at times his stepmother, Melanie, was much more like a mother to him than his biological mother. Tarei gave cusody to Kazuo. As a result, Kohaku spent much of his early life with his father and stepmother.
His stepmother died when he was four years old, and his father fell into a depression and stopped taking care of himself. He died in 1997, when Kohaku was six years old. He understood that his older sister, Maiko, went to a boarding school out of the country, though he was never sure of what kind of school it was. After the death of his father, he lived with his stepmother's family. He was able to see his older sister every summer, and the two developed a very close relationship that was also strained with how little they saw each other and the stress in their personal lives.
In the fall of 1999, Kohaku was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It was caught early and treated effectively though the treatment took over two years. When he was eleven years old, Maiko recieved full guardianship of him when she was eighteen and Kohaku was towards the end of his cancer treatments.
Living with his sister came with many issues—she was a busy person with her school and work, but was able to schedule her time so that she would be home with Kohaku after he got out of school and on Saturdays. This was when Kohaku discovered his sister was a witch, and learned about the magical world. To this day, he is still mildly critical of it, but at the same time he feels jealous that his sister lives in two worlds while he is stuck in one. He views his sister as both a maternal figure and a sisterly one.
He hopes to go to medical school and someday become an oncologist.
As of December 2009 he lives in a house with his sister, Maiko-- across the street from the Reid sisters.
In early May 2010, he found some half-written letters that his sister wrote to a wizarding Yukawa family. He knows he's not really a muggle, and is probably a squib. He hasn't confronted her about it, nor is he sure if he wants to.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: He goes to school and studies biology. He also coaches football for children on the week-ends.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: He had very strong grades throughout his education and was one of the best players on his school’s football team.
Writing Sample: Sum up your character in one paragraph: Kohaku is the younger brother of Maiko Biladeau-Yukawa. He is stubborn, sensitive, affectionate, and resistant to change. He is emotionally dependent on those he feels close to, though he tries to hide it. He is fit and athletic with a passion both for sports and learning.
