She accepted the cloth from the professor with her free hand, the other occupied by her Puck Fairy, a little thing with translucent, blue wings. Her name was Nyx, short for Nixie which meant Water Sprite. She'd named her that for two reasons, one being the fact that Nyx loved to dance on top of water, two because water reminded her of the color blue. Nyx was wearing a little white dress that had a flowing skirt; after earning her faerie's respect, Angie had created the dress for her especially for today. It was a gift for working so hard and being cooperative. Nyx loved it, demonstrating this by twirling around to let the skirt spin out about her. Angie giggled as she tried to read the Exam directions, trying not to laugh out loud from Nyx's impromptu dance. She finished reading the instructions and held the cloth closer to Nyx so the fairy could touch it. The little blue fairy held out her hand and brushed it along the cloth in a fluid movement. Angie nodded her approval and withdrew the fabric, tucking it in her pocket for later. She stepped forward to begin the first portion of her test, the physical exam. There were a few large sticks in the clearing, which Angie set up in a row, each stick parallel to the other. They were only a few inches apart. She set down Nyx by the first stick and demonstrated with her hand, dragging it up and over the first stick and towards the next. Nyx realized what she needed to do, skipping towards the first stick and flying up to the top of it, she scaled down the other side and hopped off, turning around and running towards her next obstacle. Again she climbed up one side of the stick, and gently climbed back down, releasing a peal of fairy laughter as she hit the ground running. She repeated the exercise until the final stick, number five. After successfully making it over, she flitted over to Angie's outstretched hand and collapsed, her tiny head resting on the pad of Angie's hand. "We're not done yet Nixie," Angie said softly, helping the slightly exhausted fairy back up onto her feet. She pulled a small shard of a mirror from her pocket, its edges dulled with a spell she'd learned in charms. She held it behind Nyx, immediately dragging the creature's attention away from her. Angie whistled, a high pitched note that caught the faerie's attention. She managed to keep Nyx looking at her for all of ten seconds before the fairy turned back to her beloved mirror, playing with her hair and fixing her little dress. Angie knew this was going to be the hardest part of the exam for them, mainly because she'd pulled out a mirror, and faerie's loved nothing more than their own reflection. Angie whistled again, and this time Nyx turned towards her, flying up and bopping her on the nose with her finger, just like they'd practiced. She put the mirror away and smiled at Nyx, earning a curtsy. She walked over to the pan of water, setting Nyx on the edge so that her toes just touched the water. The fairy looked ecstatic to be near the water, and waited for Angie to start humming her melody so that she could start dancing. Angie started singing the melody, watching as Nyx leaped into the air and landed on the water, working her wings to stay on top of the liquid. She spun and twirled, dress spinning out and her tiny ponytail flipping around. The fairy smiled as she did so, her little teeth looking not so vicious as usual as she smiled. After finishing the small segment of the song, Angie stopped humming, and Nyx stopped dancing, slipping beneath the water and popping back up at the edge, completely soaked and not looking too happy about it. Angie let Nyx climb back up into her palm as she soaked the cloth from before in the water Nyx had just danced in. She stepped back to let the next person go as she examined her cloth. It was a mix of a bright purple and golden color, swirled around this was and that. The gold was much darker than the purple though, creating a stark contrast between the two. Angie took this to mean that Nyx was not only an outgoing, happy fairy; but she was also grounded, not as narcissistic as the rest of her kind. Finally, her exam was over. It seemed to soon to be done, but Angie was happy they got in over with. She let Nyx tear a leaf from one of the small trees nearby, draping it around her shoulders like a cape to dry off with. "Good job Nyx, I'm proud of you." She said softly, she knew Nyx couldn't understand her; but the smile she received in return was all she needed. Zoe had been so happy to have Rose with her the time that she was given. The fairy had become surprisingly responsive to the human as of late, and the Ravenclaw couldn't help but think this might have connected to her new wand[1] and the training she had been doing with it.Rose looked different than when Hagrid had first assigned her to Zoe. Though the clothes remained the same, her hair was pulled back, a concept the girl had introduced, and she appeared tamer and more cheery. Coming to the class, the fairy rested on Zoe's head, though the girl's hair remained knot free.Zoe took the cloth Hagrid handed her and quickly read the directions. Rose appeared to be reading the directions soon, but this was more out of her new fascination with the odd symbols that made up what was known as the English language, acquired from a few textbooks Zoe had left open while studying for the midterms. The lines and curves were interesting, but the written words meant nothing. The human raised a hand above her head and pointed upward. Rose stood and took off, hovering an inch above Zoe's scalp. Zoe then pointed and the piece of cloth she held in her hand and the fairy flew down, landing on it before sitting down. Satisfied, the girl set the piece of cloth onto the ground and knelt beside it.As physical was first, Zoe decided to start with it. She looked around the area and got a stick and a small log, bringing both over to the cloth. The girl began to tap out a fast beat and, after waiting for a melody for a few seconds, the fairy began to create her own, buzzing some tune similar to one Zoe had hummed for her before. Then, Rose started to dance. She was in time with the rhythm, moving quickly but gracefully. Her bare feet hit the cloth in the same rhythm as the stick hit the log, and her movements were that of ballet, the only dance form the fairy had been taught.Rose kept this up for a good minute before showing obvious signs of fatigue. Her face turned a bit red and she was gasping slightly between humming parts of her own melody, making it sound choppy. Eventually she missed a few beats and stopped altogether, moving her hand right to left in the air, a hand signal for 'Stop'. Zoe obliged, putting down the stick to clap for the fairy. Rose, breathing heavily, gave a nod of her head in responce. "That was good! Nice stamina." Rose could tell by Zoe's tone these were compliments and smiled, though Zoe could have told the fairy her dance looked like a dog with fleas in a pleasant tone and earned a smile. "We'll just test your agility now."Zoe motioned for Rose to follow her, and the fairy flew over to the human. The girl led the fairy over to a collection of stick arranged into obstacles, two horizontal bars with just enough space for a fairy to fit between, two vertical bars the same distance apart, and three vertical bars, each a centimeter in front of the last, with just as much space for a fairy to weave through. The girl moved her finger in ways to show Rose what to do. Rose nodded to signal she understood, then took off. The first set of bars was easy, Rose simple spread her wings out and flattened her body. She flapped her wings then turned sideways and did the same for the second set of sticks, getting through with ease. Rose straightened, flapped her wings twice, then attempted to go through the third obstacle. Her body moved like a dolphin, clearing the first stick with no problem. Her wings clipped the second, and her feet hit the third. After this Rose landed, and Zoe again praised the fairy.Time for the next part of the exam. Zoe performed a couple gesture commands that had no purpose: go up, down, to the left, right, spin, flip. Simple things she had started out with. The girl pointed to a tree a couple feet over and Rose flew to it, the fairy plucking a leaf from the branches and bringing it to Zoe by command. It was easy enough, the two had established a language without words, something easy enough for a fairy to comprehend. Zoe held out her finger to the fairy and Rose put her hand on the tip, their form of a high five. Zoe sat on the ground again and Rose landed in front of her. Time to test how much the fairy trusted her. She tapped Rose's chin once and the fairy tilted her head back. The Ravenclaw drew her Puck Fairy hair wand, which she had slipped into her wand pocket, covering the owl handle with her hand so it looked almost like a normal piece of wood. Rose didn't tense at all, after becoming used to watching Zoe practice with the wand. The wand tip neared her and the fairy still didn't flinch, as if knowing the wand couldn't hurt her, that it held a part of her. Zoe put the wand tip against the fairy's throat, and Rose almost seemed to relax. This was held for a few seconds, then Zoe stowed the wand."Very good Rose. Almost done, hang it a bit longer." A patch pink roses stood a couple feet from the two, and Zoe motioned for Rose to follow her to it. The Ravenclaw pointed to the fairy, then to the flowers, and covered her eyes with one hand and put up five fingers with the other. The fairy smiled and laughed, before darting to the flowers. Zoe knew what the fairy was doing, she had done it before. Rose curled up her body under the petal of one flower, tucked her wings outside of the petal and against other petals, like they were petals themselves.Zoe lowered her fingers one by one, a silent count down, and when her stretched hand became a fist she uncovered her eyes. "Ready or not, here I come!" She looked over the flowers carefully. To one not used to the shape of the fairy's wings, Rose was invisible. Finally, Zoe tapped one of the flowers and Rose burst from it, giving a high-pitched giggle.Smiling back at the fairy, Zoe moved her fingers like one did raindrops down through the air, towards the flowers. At first Rose looked confused, but soon a smile stretched from one ear to the other. Rose lifted her hand high into the air, which began to glow purple. The aura of purple grew, until Rose flung her hand downward, and the purple light dispersed into a sparkling purple dust. It landed on the flowers which, jinxed, had their petals enlarged and turned an ugly puke green covered in purple bumps and their stems turned to jelly. They collapsed to the ground and Rose laughed loudly, tumbling in the air. Zoe couldn't help but smile back before going to pick up the cloth, still on the ground.Zoe carefully lay the fabric into the water, and watched it turn a variety of colors, colors not to be ignored, much like the fairy they came from. The piece was girly, containing two pinks. One a more soft and innocent pink, friendly almost, but the more prominent one fell nearer to a devilish red, not quite evil but playful. Yellow, a cheerful and fun color, was scattered through the flowers of the cloth. Green finished off the piece, bringing with it the vanity one associated with such a color. Though it held an odd mix of colors, Zoe regarded the cloth as pretty. Perhaps she'd ask Hagrid for it back later to copy the colors onto something else. It looked like it would make a nice bedspread.Sighing partly with relief the exam was over, Zoe looked up. "Rose." The fairy looked up from the jinxed flowers. The human patted the top of her head and the fairy flew over, happily settling back onto her bed of hair. Zoe smiled, and walked off to the side where she wouldn't bother anyone else. Shame fairies had such a short lifespan.[2] 1. New Day, New Wand 2. MERLIN I don't shut up! Skip to next post Re: [Dec 14] 4th Year CoMC: Winter Exam Reply #3 on October 16, 2012, 11:02:50 PM STUDENTName: Nicholas Charles MensforthSchool & House: Hogwarts: SlytherinCREATUREName: Richard IIIClassification: Three-legged crowRating: XXXWatching the fairies go, directed by gesture and tonal implication, Nick was at once glad and suddenly nervous that Richard could understand, even speak, English. Given that his species was noted for haughty defiance, and Richard was personally possessed of a surly, snide disposition, Nick suddenly imagined the exam turning out rather like a ventriloquist dummy show, only with him actually unable to control his rude puppet. Well, he'd always been fine at Care of Magical Creatures, and Hagrid had to be aware that getting Richard to listen was going to be the hard part; as long as he got enough sun, Richard's physical abilities would be just fine, and he'd pick up a wide range of skills with relative ease. . . as long as he wanted to complete the physical task and the skill in question interested him. Well, here goes nothing; "Oi there, who's a pretty bird?""I am." No sign of Richard popping out of his coat to touch the cloth. Great."Yeah, like these good people would take you at your word," Nick said, incredulously. "Even those what would, I bet they wouldn't imagine what a pretty bird you are. You oughtta come out and show 'em." What looked to be a normal crow poked its head out of Nick's lapel, then slowly pulled itself free, where the first few hints that it wasn't exactly normal, besides speaking English, came to light; firstly, it had three legs, each ending in talons half-again as long as they'd be on a normal crow, and secondly, when the light struck it, its feathers had an emerald sheen to them that simply could not be natural. "Bloody cold, Nick," Richard objected as he hovered next to Nick's shoulder, grabbing the fabric of his jacket and tugging at it like an impatient child."What are you looking at me for, mate? I ain't got no matches, what am I supposed to do?" Nick ran a finger down Richard's head before wagging it in the direction of the spare wood from the discourse. "I bet that would make you warmer, they would." The three-legged crow was, fundamentally, a creature of the sun; it survived by absorbing sunlight, and could live and thrive so long as it got the ultraviolet radiation it needed to power the tiny star inside of it. Getting them enough sunlight in an English winter was, Nick imagined, supposed to be a challenge, but, luckily, he'd managed to jury-rig one of those muggle UV lamps, the kind they gave people who got depressed in winter, so that it would work in the castle. Not only had this made his project a lot easier, it had also given put Richard in a perpetual state of owing him one, since this was by far his most pleasant winter, yet. Regardless, they hated the cold, and the bird wasn't going to stop whining about it until there was some heat source going. Luckily, besides making the birds into vacuum-cleaners you never had to empty, since they instantly vaporized just about anything they ate, and they abhorred a mess, the little star in their stomachs allowed them to breathe out some very, very hot air. Hot enough to light the spare twigs and sticks from the obstacle course, set together in a pile. Getting Richard warm and completing a physical challenge at the same time was just a bonus. "Why don't you put it in all a big pile and get it going, eh?""Sod off," Richard cawed, annoyed. "You do it.""Right then, I do this and you set up your lamp. Sound fair, that?" Nick said, grinning at the bird. For all his talents, there was no way Richard was getting that lamp working without a wand, and using a wand was one of the few skills the bird would never, ever be able to learn. Richard, indignant at being outwitted, responded by grabbing the cloth out of Nick's hand with a petulant. "You were supposed to take that, Richard," Nick informed him. One talon tossed the cloth back at Nick while Richard went off to complete his task, chagrined. Pieces too large to carry in flight, he'd drag with one leg while hopping on the two, then dropped smaller twigs around those. For all their differences, they were still crows, and the same cunning that ran in the corvid family remained in their more magical form; they hadn't forgotten to work with tools after learning to breathe superheated gas and never have to eat. "Not just a pretty bird, but strong, I see," Nick said, generally treating Richard as he would Katie; go blow-for-blow with the snark, but don't be afraid to be nice, when it was warranted. He frowned, realizing that he was pretty sure Katie had dumped him more times than they'd "dated," somehow. Whatever. "Flex for us, Richard?""Sod off," the bird said again, but with clear pride in his scratchy voice, putting the finishing touches on the small bonfire it was starting in its pile of wood. Well, the heated breath was meant for the second portion of the test, but he imagined he'd still get credit for it now. He had told him to build the fire, not just shuffle around some logs, after all. "Aww, come on, mate?" Nick implored, before adding sagely "Oh, I see. You don't want the ladies thinking you're too bulky. You wanna show 'em you're fit, not just show muscle. Why don't you do us some barrel rolls, flying ace?" Nick knew that as soon as he made such a suggestion in public, Richard wouldn't resist the opportunity to show off, but realized a second after he actually suggested it that Richard wouldn't resist the opportunity to show off at his expense, either. Sure enough, the sleek crow took to the air only to dive-bomb right at Nick's face and veer off in an elegant roll at the last possible second. Nick, to his credit, had taken enough punches in his day to restrain the urge to flinch. "Turn on a dime, can't you?" he said, hoping to make it seem like Richard diving for his face was intentional; thankfully, Richard didn't tell him to sod off again, which would've rather ruined the effect."Now that everyone knows I trust you and, accordingly, I thank my stars they ain't grading me for good judgment," Nick said, figuring that would draw Richard's attention back from showing off, if anything would. Nick was about to suggest Richard show the good people that he trusted Nick, as well, but who knew how that would go. "Let's show 'em your Houdini, then?" Eager to show off even more, Richard landed in Nick's hand, feet in the air. Nick tied his three legs together, dropped in him in a larger pan of water, and and set a lid with tiny door atop it, which he tied down with the last of his rope. "Now, if you can't get your feet undid to get the door, peck frantically like an idiot and I'll let you out." It wasn't perfect, but that Richard would rely on Nick for back-up was actually rather telling. He hoped Hagrid was aware of just how fickle the strange little birds were. After all, he'd done flying acrobatics, carried wood, and set the wood alight. Now, he was going to untie knots around his legs with his beak and open a door with his talons, and then he'd show his ability to clean up rubbish. Not to mention he'd been talking the whole time, but given what he'd been saying, Nick wasn't sure that would really count. Physical and skill portions were solid, regardless, as far as Nick could tell. Nick just hoped Hagrid understood that it was pretty much inevitable that their "relationship dynamics" might end up on the dysfunctional side. He was confident Richard was actually fond of him, which would hopefully come across in the mental health portion. The frantic knocking never came, and a soaked Richard sputtered out of the water, carrying the twine in his beak triumphantly."Bloody cold, Nick," Richard repeated, accusingly, since Nick was the one who'd suggested the water, after all. He waved in the direction of the fire again, and walked over to where Richard sat, basking in its warmth closer than a normal bird would dare. "Now, we've just got to put this cloth in the--" exaggerating for effect, he dropped a wide assortment of rubbish out of his pocket. "Oh, I'm such a clumsy oaf, look at all that.""Trash," Richard cawed, fury in his voice. Hopping from tissue to bit of foil like a crow would hop from worm to worm, as Richard swallowed the trash, thin wisps of green smoke spilled from his mouth. He added "Rubbish!" and "filth!" with equal disdain, before he finished by grabbing the cloth he wasn't supposed to eat and hopping back to the fire. Well, no hope in him bringing it, then. Nick shrugged and picked it up from next to the fire, thankful it hadn't gotten burned."Good job leaving this bit, need it so we can leave. You fly over when you're done, I'll just be a minute," he said, swirling the cloth around in the pool. It perhaps adequately reflected the precocious-big/little-brother sort of feeling Nick felt he and Richard had going; Richard loved and respected Nick, in his own fashion, but there was a part of Richard certain that, not being a crow, Nick had to be an idiot and Richard was, as such, very frustrated at being tricked into doing Nick's chores, since it meant he was tricked by a not-crow idiot. Still, as you moved inward, towards the core of his being, green -- the colour they shared -- steadily overwhelmed the icy blue of Richard's disinterested outward behavior. A good enough sign, then, hopefully it showed whatever the bizarre social relations portion of the exam couldn't. Well, hopefully. Skip to next post

Skip to next post
Re: [Dec 14] 4th Year CoMC: Winter Exam Reply #2 on October 15, 2012, 02:15:15 AM STUDENTName: Zoe TorretSchool & House: Hogwarts, RavenclawCREATUREName: RoseClassification: Puck FairyRating: XXXWas it really time for the exam already?! Skip to next post
Re: [Dec 14] 4th Year CoMC: Winter Exam Reply #3 on October 16, 2012, 11:02:50 PM STUDENTName: Nicholas Charles MensforthSchool & House: Hogwarts: SlytherinCREATUREName: Richard IIIClassification: Three-legged crowRating: XXXWatching the fairies go, directed by gesture and tonal implication, Nick was at once glad and suddenly nervous that Richard could understand, even speak, English.
