MIDTERM EXAM: NEWT on October 13, 2012, 06:53:56 PM Welcome To Your Muggle Studies Exam! The students find the room quite different from what it usually looks like. There are three long tables, one that has several chairs on either side, one that has an assortment of metal objects, and one that has a variety of clothing. Near the table with clothing articles are wired framed models, easy to change size and to make proportionate depending on how the clothing fits."Good morning students!" Proffesor Santucci says to the class. "Today is your exam day. As you noticed when you walked in, there are three stations. The written portion, the conversational portion, and the fashion or engine portion. Please circle around at your liking, and visit each table before the end of the period.""The written portion is simple. Answer the questions on the paper and turn it in to me. I trust you can handle that." She said simply, gesturing to a stack of papers on her desk. Written Portion:Question 1: Where did humanity start? Question 2: Where did society start?Extra Credit: What are the three hands on the clock?[1] 1. The questions continue from here. Feel free to make up more of them, or just RP with what's there.Althea wandered over to the table with the clothing, picking up a particularly bright yellow tanktop, "For the fashion section, you have to assemble a muggle outfit. Please keep in mind what we've studied about fashion and use this knowledge to put together your creation."[2]"If fashion doesn't suit your fancy, you can work on your engine over here." She said, dropping the tanktop down on the table and walking over to the table with metal pieces all over it. Picking up an oddly shaped piece of metal, she held it up for the class to see as she explained what they could do there. "In order to create your engine, you will utilise the assortment of objects you find here. Once you've finished your engine, call me over and I will examine it."[3]She placed the small socket back down on the table and proceeded to walk over to the table surrounded by chairs. "Here you'll complete the conversational piece of your exam. I've assigned partners, so just check the list on the table to see who your partner is."[4] Althea clapped her hands together. "I'd like you to speak about current events in the Muggle world, from popular music, to fashion, to news, really whatever fits your fancy."With a smile she clapped her hands together, "That's your exam! Please complete the written portion first, you'll find the papers on your desks. After you may proceed to whichever stations you like!""I wish you all good luck, and I know that you will do well!" She said, as she sat down in her blue chair that was now off in the corner. "Oh, yeah, Begin!"[5] 2. Go here and state a number and a letter, the number pertaining to the shirt, and the letter pertaining to the pants. The students will dress the mannequins with the choices they have made, and then continue to another task. 3. At the end of the exam, after everyone has completed it, I will post back her response. 4. If you would like to pick your own partner, go ahead. If you'd like me to assign one, shoot me a PM. And if you'd like to use an NPC, well, go right ahead! 5. Alright! Have fun, and I look forward to reading your responses! Skip to next post Re: MIDTERM EXAM: NEWT Reply #1 on October 26, 2012, 11:07:02 PM There were some exams Sasha stressed, worried and lost sleep over starting as many as three weeks before the exam date. Then there were some exams that, with a few extra study sessions, he felt comfortably confident about. Muggle Studies was, no doubt, one that fell into the second category. Not that he didn't take it seriously, of course - he took all exams seriously. Muggle Studies, especially, was just a class that he spent a massive amount of time indirectly preparing for outside of school. He grew up muggleborn and spent most holidays pretending to be a muggle. He'd spent a large portion of his summer in a summer science program for international high school students at Cambridge. He did, admittedly, struggle a little with assimilating with youth muggle culture but no more or less so than he did with youth wizarding culture. But, Sasha started in on the essay first. Every few paragraphs, Sasha generally had to sit back and remind himself that the questions were probably meant to be taken literally and not quite as philosophically as his essay was trying to wander. Professor Santucci probably wasn't looking for a multi-cultural analysis of how humanity is defined. In the end, the essays were quite lengthy and managed to take into account religious as well as cultural perspectives of humanity and society. From there, Sasha moved on to the next station where he paused a moment, staring at the mannequins. "They're all women's clothing," Sasha remarked as he looked over the selection. But, it was easy to imagine which combination of clothes Jacoba would wear and which she wouldn't. He slipped the plaid blouse and blue jeans[1] on one of the mannequins before moving on to the conversation bit. "Allo," Sasha offered as he took his seat. "What do you think about the Nobel Prize Awards?" 1. #4 and D Skip to next post Re: MIDTERM EXAM: NEWT Reply #2 on November 06, 2012, 06:58:39 AM Teagan was not very worried about this midterm, but looked forward to it. Not that Teagan ever worried about exams; it wasn't really her style. She went through school with an attitude of one simply enjoying a hobby. Muggle studies in particular was something she was passionate about. Even outside of class, Teagan often read upon the subject. As such, she was confident that the midterm would be easy and enjoyable. Starting with the essay, she sat down quietly at one of the tables and started scribbling away. Regarding the first question, Teagan answered this according to what she believed would have been the answer in Muggle class textbooks. She talked about the evolution theory and the details relating to that. The second question, she tackled in the same way. Having perused Muggle textbooks herself in the Hogwarts' library, she felt confident that her answers were correct from a Muggle point of view. And the last extra credit question: too easy. She smiled happily, writing out detailed and thorough responses for the rest of the essay questions, relating to historical events in Muggle history and different world cultures. Handing her paper in to the Professor, she went on to place the Muggle clothing on the mannequin. Teagan chose a horizontally striped shirt (5) and grey leggings (b). She put the clothes onto the mannequin and then proceeded to find Sasha, with whom she paired up for the conversational part of the exam. "Hey Sasha!" she said with a smile. "I think it can be a great way to recognize and reward the personal efforts and achievements of the Muggle society in peace, as well as the sciences and arts," she said. "However, sometimes it seems that the awards are given to serve a political agenda, while omitting more deserving candidates." From there, she expanded her idea by giving several examples of individuals who she felt didn't deserve the award, as well as others who did deserve it and didn't receive it. "Sasha, what do you think about the Kyoto Protocol?" Skip to next post Re: MIDTERM EXAM: NEWT Reply #3 on November 07, 2012, 10:32:43 AM The first questions were simple enough, and so Georgiana responded to them with somewhat lengthy answers. One of these went into particular detail about the impact of the early crops of the Fertile Crescent and the influence of agriculture on that society. She finished that section with writing a a somewhat snide, but also thorough answer that wound up comparing so-called modern wizarding society to Muggles a few centuries ago, then scribbled down the answer to the extra credit question with a bit of an amused snort. She rolled her eyes as she sat back and shoved the paper forward. This was easy kid stuff. It'd have been easier if she'd had a laptop and the internets, but Hogwarts failed like that. Then she stood up and scowled her way over to the fashion station. Once there, she picked up a studded corset top and a pair of black leather pants[1], held them as if evaluating, then slid both onto a model. The patterned sweaters earned a bit of a groan and a sneer. Apparently, the irritatingly cheerful professor (no one could be that cheerful, in Gigi's opinion), had decided that frumpy old sweaters were an appropriate choice.Though at least all of the clothing hadn't been awful. And if she could convince someone that those brightly patterned blue pants were good fashion, it'd be fun mockery. Especially if she allowed herself to imagine Tappy in them. That image made her snort briefly in laughter as she made her way back to her seat. Once there, she sprawled in it in a fashion that hinted at her throwing her feet over the table at any moment, and spared a small glance for her partners. Schlagensomething and a Hufflepuff. Wonderful. And they were blabbing about the Nobel prizes and Kyoto Protocol, of all things. "Some of the science is cool, I guess. That physics one with the fiber-optic cable stuff[2] is going to see a lot of use. Not sure why they give out a peace prize though, haven't seen this world peace popping up yet." They were boring. They had free reign, and they'd gone for boring. Schlagendull. She couldn't remember the other girl's name. Tea letters something. But yeah, that was it. Teasomething and Schlaaagendulll. She rolled the sound of that name around in her thoughts. "Kyoto Protocol isn't in effect, yet, is it? See if if survives a few years with the politicians." She shrugged and threw a quick glance around. "She said anything, though. You see the Reach[3] announcement? What poison do you think once it's out: sniper, or battle rifle?" There were few things that could get her more excited than a Halo reveal. 1. 1 and C 2. 2009 Physics prize: Charles Kuen Kao 3. Sasha could concede that confusing politics and art was probably a bad thing. Politically motivated art was usually more common in Totalitarian regimes than permissive ones. And almost never existed on its own. But, when it came to science and peace, it didn't seem as clear cut. Sasha shrugged. "Science and global dynamics can only go so far without the backing of politics. Awarding the American President with the peace prize was, obviously, political but might it not have a bigger impact than-" Sasha's voice trailed off when Georgiana spoke, scowling slightly at her argument. Was she being sarcastic? It was somewhat hard to tell but he could only assume, given the idea, that it was. "Sky scrappers don't just 'pop up'," Sasha pointed out, clearly still uncertain if he was supposed to be arguing what might have not been meant in all seriousness. "It takes ongoing progress and any accomplishment will help. Not that people do it for the award but-" Georgiana continued to try to steer the conversation and the topic went from Nobel prizes and the Kyoto Protocol to ... violent video games. No peace prize there. "I ... um ... no. I've only got a Wii," he admitted. Which wasn't entirely true. They owned the other two gaming consoles but, well, those had belonged to Anna. He might have accepted living in his family's home, again, but he wasn't quite to the point of pillaging his parents' or sister's room. "And, I was busy with classes over the summer." If the conversation stayed on video games or similar stuff, Sasha could actually run the risk of failing an exam because of not wasting his time. There really could be no greater insult. He had to steer the conversation back to something less trivial. "Do you follow football?" Skip to next post Re: MIDTERM EXAM: NEWT Reply #5 on November 26, 2012, 08:58:18 PM He would be one to have a Wii. Gigi's scowl towards Schlagendong showed quite clearly her disapproval of his lack of Xbox Live and capable hardware. Not that she'd expected anything else. And the subject did seem to bother him, given how quickly it turned to...oh, but football could be fun."Don't follow it much." She glanced over at the Hufflepuff for a moment before continuing. "Not that I have any objections to a bunch of men running around kicking ea-" A short pause, then a wicked grin. "Running around kicking balls. If you have a favorite player to oogle I'll even take notes."She wasn't completely incapable of being intellectual. There was something about her that made her.. uncomfortable, to say the least. Trying to ignore her own growing dislike for the girl (she wanted to be fair, she didn't know her at all), she joined in on the conversation. "Oh, I don't watch any football, but American football is slightly more interesting to me. The rules are much more complicated, but once you get the gist of it, it's quite entertaining," she said, her cheeks reddening slightly. "What is your favorite football team, Sasha?" she asked, smiling kindly. "What do you think of American politics in general, both of you? I seem to have the impression it is unnecessarily complicated, which makes things difficult for the citizens to participate in voting and government," she said, unsure of herself. She should have probably chosen a topic that she understood better, but U.S.A. fascinated Teagan. She felt bad not responding at all to Georgiana's comments, but she quite frankly had no idea what to add. The girl seemed to only talk in sarcastic remarks, which Teagan felt was rather inappropriate considering they were in an exam. That little rather un-exam-like scowl was pretty transparent, even for someone as dense as Sasha could be. "Spirit Tracks is coming out for the holidays... never mind." He probably wasn't helping his case. Football and footballers it was. And, the question was an easy one. "FC Bayern Munich, of course," Sasha answered, grinning at Teagan. It was getting hard to tell whether Georgiana's question about favorite player was serious or fishing for amusement fodder. "Home team loyalty, I guess. And, there's a new goalkeeper named Thomas Müller that seems to be doing well. I'm hoping to watch a few games over the holidays." If, that was, he managed to commandeer the Trishna television for football. And they got the right channels. "Munich has an American Football team. The Munich Cowboys, I think. But, I don't really follow it. It seems more brutish. Less...strategy." American football was to real football what marbles was to chess. "Do either of you play muggle sports? Outside of school. I'm on a team I play with over holidays." American politics seemed like quite a big topic. Especially depending on what, specifically, one was looking at. "I think they waste a lot of money," Sasha offered. "I understand the civics of it but, you read the newspaper, and it's strange." Sasha glanced around, curious if any of the visiting Salem students were in ear shot. "Maybe you can, so long at that Doctor Who special isn't on. Don't think you can win against my brother on that." Though Tappy trying to beat Sasha away from the television with a model of a sonic screwdriver could be fun. "Not really, no. Kicked a ball around a few times." That had generally stopped after she'd started aiming said balls at particularly painful parts of her opponents' anatomies. Apparently padding could be important. She blinked a little at...ah yes, Teagan. Just because they had classes together didn't mean she'd ever paid much attention to the Hufflepuff. But American politics? "Yeah, a lot of money to scream at each other in ugly ways. Don't they spend a lot of it arguing that they should be able to run around with guns in their pockets, too?" She wasn't really sure on the details there, and shrugged. Skip to next post Re: MIDTERM EXAM: NEWT Reply #9 on December 06, 2012, 07:54:13 PM Althea clapped for the students.
