Halloween night had gone from leisurely
haunting brews to a
blind adventure in some pitch black corner of the Forbidden Forest, and no amount of Lumos spells illuminated anything. Luckily, Naomi's Halloween costume helped her tactile senses; Gracie was just as accustomed to functioning without some senses; and Alex and Raine were capable on the stroll. Their journey ended with their gathering several glowing Datura fruits, obviously the only source of light available in that dark recess of the forest. So they each picked some of the thorn apples and retreated to their dorms at some unearthly hour of the morning.
After that night, however, the thorn apples turned black, barely capable of reflecting any sort of light. They picked a few apart and tested them with various potions and compared them to various plants, but it despite all the odd characteristics they learned about the fruit they couldn't figure out how to make them glow again, even by keeping them in ridiculously dark rooms.
They eventually decided it may be best to grow some of their own plants, but until they did that they continued to wander into the forest to pick some fruits whenever possible--and so Naomi had her own little bowl of the spiked spheres tonight, and rather than rely on Herbology or Potions, she decided to work on some experiments manipulating light with a little touch of...
Afamdi magic.
That morning she let the other sixth years know what she was up to and what floor of the castle they could find her on, out of courtesy, but the Slytherin wasn't going to wait around for them to show up. So with the full moon hanging high in the sky, Naomi dressed herself in some warm black garbs, guarding her against the chilly night, and she took her bag and made her way to the Seventh Floor; she kept her very specific need in her head as she walked past the tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy three times. Then the door appeared.
She quickly slipped into the Room of Requirement, where various kinds of prisms, glass dishes and pieces, mirrors, and lenses were set over counters in a dark room--everything she needed after she went through with her initial plan.
Naomi picked up a glass bowl and set it upside-down on an empty counter, and, with some quick wandwork, she made a small hole in the top of the bowl. Then she pricked her finger and drew spirals of blood around the bowl and set it aside.
From her bag, she then took out a small bag of beans and wooden bowl, of which she popped the lid off of, revealing several black thorn apples inside. She took one of the fruit and set it on an empty spot on the counter and surrounded it with a few beans. She took one of her nails and snapped the beans apart, causing them to spark into little flames surrounding the little fruit. Now it was all set.
She then picked up the glass bowl and set it on top of the fruit and the flames as she looked forward and gave a long sigh, emptying her lungs of any air and held it; a preparation to execute a
Dragon's Kiss in reverse. After a moment Naomi leaned over the bowl and quickly sucked the air
and flames from it.
Outside the bowl, the blood turned black; the inside of the bowl faded and dimmed into what seemed to be an eerie black shroud; and the thorny apple began to give off a pearly white glow.
"So you gotta kill 'di light like a black hole..." the witch's voice lilted through the room as she rolled her eyes a little, "And one question's answered wit' some cryptic dragon shit." Despite how baffled Naomi was by the results, she did now have a strange and basic idea of
why the thorn apples glowed, now it was a matter of discovering how they did it.
