Wand: Carys' wand is on the longer side- at a length of exactly thirteen inches. This is an indication of her magical aptitude, and a reflection of her height- as she is taller than average for a girl. The wood is apple wood, which is associated with skill in healing and charms. The core is Unicorn Tail Hair- a core which is great for charms and tends to choose the pure of heart. The wood is swishy, which goes hand in hand with her weak-willed personality. The shaft is spiraled, a trait often associated with quick witted witches and wizards.

Physical Description: Carys is quite tall for a seventeen year old girl- standing at five feet ten inches tall. It is an unusual trait, considering that most Whitman and Grumman women have petite frames and statures. Carys just considers it yet another trait that makes her stand out from the family. Though she wishes she could slouch to hide the fact, perfect posture has been engrained in her. Apart from her height, however, Carys is every bit the Whitman in appearance.

Her hair is blond- which is typical for the Whitman clan. Her eyes are blue-green, like her elder sister. Though Carys' eyes are slightly more blue. When she was younger, she looked almost identical to Maeve. But as she aged, Carys' face became more round- her cheeks a bit fuller. From a wealthy, pureblood family Carys definitely looks the part. Her uniforms are always in pristine condition. Her other clothing consists of well crafted dresses and skirts/blouses. Her figure has started to fill out now that she is seventeen. Carys has the soft curves of a woman now. She tries very hard to project the image of the pureblood that she is expected to be.

Personality Description: The personality that is associated with Carys is not true to her nature. Carys tries very hard to be the sort of pureblood she is expected to be. Purist, icy, aloof, etc. are the traits she tries very hard to project. But it is very hard for her. Meanness and indifference does not come naturally to Carys. She is, when left to her own devices, more or less a genuinely nice individual. If it were not for the influence of her sister and her family, Carys would probably have been the pureblood to shame the family.

In all honesty, she cares little about a person's bloodline. She doesn't think that your bloodline is any indication of your worth as a person. But of course, Carys cannot say this outloud. So she pretends to be purist. Carys tries not to socialize or befriend muggleborns, and on occasion loudly protests involvement with them. She will speak up- refusing to be partnered with "that mudblood"- but she always feels awful afterward. Carys is not manipulative, cunning, or any other trait that is generally associated with Slytherin house. Nor is she particularly ambitious. Even so, she wishes that she was these things. Carys wants more than anything to be worthy of the great house of Slytherin.

Because she is so dissatisfied with the person she truly is, Carys tries to surround herself with the people she wishes she could be. Her social circle consists mostly of Slytherins. Though sometimes she can't help herself- and ends up making friends with less worthy people. She tries to reason this away with "they may be useful" if questioned about it. Carys idolizes the so-called Slytherin Elite. Beautiful and dangerous girls, and the boys that she supposed she will some day end up dating or marrying.

Incredibly gullible and weak willed, Carys is the sort of person who is easy to manipulate. Being a pawn in other people's schemes. It is also not unusual for her to aid others in their school work- often times offering so much aid it hinges on cheating or doing their work for them. (Though Carys refuses to actually do all of the work, but she will tell someone the answers for homework and have them write it themselves.)

Carys really enjoys her classes and learning. Reading is one of her favorite past times. Her guilty pleasure are romance novels and other works of fiction. It allows her to escape into a world and life she knows that she will never be able to live. Although she scored exceptionally well on her OWLs, Carys has continued study only in classes which would benefit her future career- that of a healer. Though she's unsure if she will be allowed the chance to intern at St. Mungo's upon graduation, she is preparing- just in case. The only exception to this is Ancient Runes- which is a class she simply enjoys and wanted to continue taking for her own amusement.

History: Carys' father is Joshua Whitman- who holds a seat on the International Council of Wizards. Her- Eloise- comes from the Russian pureblood family of Grumman. Where the Whitman family is well respected and holds many important political positions in the British ministry, the Grumman family has long been associated with the dark arts and were once suspected followers of Voldemort.

Carys was the second born in the family, and the second girl. Her older sister- Maeve- is about a year and a half older than her. As a young girl, and even growing up, Carys idolized her big sister and wanted to be just like her. Though they, for the most part, got along- it is always annoying to have a little doppleganger following you about. And Carys was the better behaved of the siblings- the only time she got into trouble or acted out was the urging of her siblings or as a direct result of their actions.

Though she loved her big sister more than the world, Carys had and has little use for her younger brother Maxen. When he was born, much ado was made that there was finally an heir. While most children might get jealous, Carys was happy that her family name and her father's hard work would carry on. That was the pureblood way, after all. Besides, Carys had grown up in the lap of luxury, wanting for nothing. What reason had she to be jealous of a baby?

But as Maxen grew older, he became quite the mischevious little boy. He had taken to calling her "Carrots" as a toddler, and she hated him for it. He also took to finding frogs, rats, and other creatures and torturing her with them. He would put them in her bed, her closet, her shoes, and more than once in her food. Carys quickly came to resent her brother. The feeling was likely mutual. Carys was the apple of her father's eye, and would tell on Maxen for every horrid thing he did to her. Such behavior was hardly appropriate for a young pureblood boy- who should be the very picture of civility and propriety. Thus, her little brother was in trouble quite often- all,  seemingly, because of her.

It did not become apparent to Carys that she was unlike the rest of her family until her first year of Hogwarts. Sitting on the stool, the sorting hat was lowered upon her head. Carys had always assumed she would be sorted into Slytherin. She would be there with her big sister, and with her cousins. It was the appropriate house for the Whitman she wanted to be, after all. But when the little voice buzzed in her ear, discussing how she was a perfect fit for Ravenclaw- Carys was horrified.
    "I can't be a Ravenclaw!" she thought. "I just can't! It's all wrong!"

"Perhaps Hufflepuff, then? You are pure of heart, hard working, and loyal- all traits worthy of a badger."

"I'M A SLYTHERIN!" Carys yelled in her mind at the sorting hat. "I have to be a Slytherin!"

The sorting hat chuckled in her ear. "It would be like throwing you to the wolves..."
And on the argument went, for two full minutes. Eventually the hat wanted to hear no more of Carys' protests, and loudly proclaimed- RAVENCLAW. Carys was devastated, mortified, and dragged her feet sadly to join her new housemates. Though her father assured her that Ravenclaw was a perfectly respectable house, Carys couldn't see it. She had never told anyone that the hat thought her worthy of Hufflepuff. And instead insists the hat was quite torn betten Ravenclaw and Slytherin.

Her first few years at Hogwarts were awkward ones. Carys, now separated from the constant influence of her family, began to realize that she was unlike the personalities she had grown up around and grown up expecting to be. Carys liked her housemates. She often caught herself enjoying the company of people of lesser birth- and feeling guilty about it. Carys was a nice, kind individual- not the sort of person you'd expect to come from the Whitman clan.

She threw herself into her studies. She focused on her classes, wanting to make grades that would impress her parents. Carys also tried to surround herself with Slytherin friends and associates. It was important ot Carys that she had the appropriate friends and social circle- not wanting to disappoint. It was obvious that she wanted to be among the Slytherin elite, and also obvious that she wasn't cut out for the role. Eventually she found her niche, thought it was mostly the part of the pawn.

In her fifth year, she did a wonderful job on her OWLs. Carys passed all of them. And she continued her study in Charms, DaDA, Herbology, Potions, Transfiguration, and Ancient Runes. She thought she might want to be a healer someday. It appealed to her, and she was skilled with healing spells and potions. She also had a great aptitude for charms. Her study of Ancient Runes was continued simply because she genuinely enjoyed the class. And, despite the past of the professor with one of her relatives, rather liked and respected Professor Reid as an instructor.

Now a sixth year, Carys is continuing to work hard in classes. With the tournament in full swing, she is attempting to maintain a spotless reputation in the hopes of impressing the foreign students of pureblood descent. Her sister has recently graduated, and Carys misses her very much. It's harder to maintain the facade now that her main influence has left Hogwarts.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Carys always wanted to be a Slytherin- but the sorting hat wouldn't hear it, even when she asked to be put into the Slytherin house. Quick witted, intelligent, and a naturally skilled witch Ravenclaw was the perfect fit for the more mild mannered of the Whitman siblings. She has proven herself to be quite the capable witch, and lives up to the expectations of Ravenclaw house.

Writing Sample:

Sum up your character in one paragraph: Carys is a pureblood girl who is trying very hard to be the sort of woman that her family wants her to be. Though it doesn't come naturally to her, she does her best to project the appropriate image. However, she is a truly nice person who wants to one day be a healer and help people- even if she keeps that to herself most of the time.
