    Physical
To describe Cynric Rosier as objectively attractive would be a gross exaggeration. With his blocky features, pointy chin and beady little eyes, there is very little to please the discerning eye... and yet.

And yet it would not do him justice to be called unattractive. There is an awkward, boyish charm to Cynric’s countenance. A charisma that can’t be lost by any amount of squinting or sailor-swearing.  This is helped along by typically disorderly hair (sometimes slicked back), an earthy shade of brown that softens his dark green eyes. Cynric smiles in the way an endearing child might and laughs without restraint. The boney edges of his lanky frame do not so much hold him in place as they do pull him apart; lean muscles stretched between joints as if though they might snap back together if strained tautly.

The wizard stands three inches over six feet on most days. He likes to claim that he is five inches over on a good evening. His movements are restless and jerky... often quick to get to his feet or change directions or hop over unsuspecting benches. There is a nearly rhythmic flair to his gestures and mannerisms; quite literally moving to the beat of his own imaginary drum.

Cynric’s sense of style is vaguely quixotic and at times glaringly mismatched. He has little taste for wizarding robes (“Have you ever tried jumping off an airborne Hippogriff in one of those? Can’t be done.”) but owns a fair share of smartly cut suits. Even so you will find him decked out in bow-ties, checked shirts, striped tees, feminine scarves and tweed jackets. Also, of course, suspenders. One must never forget to keep one’s trousers in place.

    Personality
Very few people know the real reason behind why Cynric often goes by the name of “Rascal” but many have assumed that it’s because he really is a rapscallion. Bonkers, eight bricks short of a wall, outlandish, off the gillyweed, certifiably insane.

Well... that final account might have been true at one point in time.

Everything else is public censure and prudence, in his opinion. Cynric quite enjoys the stares and glares of society when he’s acting strange or dragging unwitting strangers into his seemingly arbitrary eccentricities. His social filter is lacking in many aspects: he is normally blunt and unconsciously direct- at other times, he comes across as oddly innocent- like an ignorant schoolboy. Those who call themselves his friends may poke fun at these aspects of his personality. He has no issue with being teased, and takes such remarks with good humor.

Cynric’s talents are flagrantly apparent when it comes to writing. Words were all he had as a child and they have been a constant companion in times of difficulty. They are, to him,  tool and benefactress in one- he knows them well in both roles. Behind his zany flippancy lies the unexpectedly complicated mind that has penned many an intricate novel. He very rarely adheres to the same genre and his plots are infamous for their highly unconventional intrigues; this, often paired with whimsical style.

If you know Cynric then you will know that he is an entertaining inconvenience. Allowing him into your life generally means being stolen away for a day or so to partake in strange experiments (all in the name of literature) or inopportune adventures. He once carried off his then-editor for an unplanned trip to Norway, where they embarked on a week long excursion: hunting trolls. Naturally, she resigned as soon as the contract on his book had been completed.

Romantically speaking, Cynric has no particular preference for gender or type. He flirts and gets himself into odd little relationships every so often but none of them have been serious; many have trespassed into his home, none into his bedchamber. It is often joked that he doesn’t have one; merely a windowless room with padded walls. [/center]

    HISTORY
Armandé (neé Hanover) Rosier never wanted children. The french witch, who married into the Rosier family at 18 years of age, knew that her husband’s relatives were of no good stock. Dark wizards and crooks and murderers. It was no place to raise a baby.

But love has an uncompromising nature and Ackley Rosier needed an heir as they were not many young men in his family to inherit their fortunes. So an heir was produced... reluctantly but with no mean measure of care or tenderness. Cynric Brayden Rosier was born in their holiday home below the Scottish border; the unforgivingly cold county of Cumbria. Armandé was very pleased to have birthed a son; she would bring no more children into the world and a single one would be difficult enough to protect.

    CHILDHOOD

Cynric grew up on the Rosier family residence in Winchester for most of his childhood. He was a quiet and reserved boy who was never seen without a mop of messy hair or badly bruised knees. His mother was also his Governess; she kept him with her at almost all times and when he could be restrained from galavanting around the estate, the pair could be found in the manor Library. She gave him the world at the tip of his fingers: in books and pictures and tall tales. As Cynric’s friends were sparse (several female cousins, two house elves, one muggleborn boy from the nearby town and five imaginary Lethifolds), this suited him well.

As he drew closer to schooling-age, family politics became a more significant element in his life. He had been told by many a shady relative that they belonged to the house of Slytherin. It was also at this point in life that Cynric understood he was an heir; their’ other, most viable option had been the traitor- and his uncle - Cameron Rosier.

    HOGWARTS

Being sorted in Gryffindor was probably the most terrifying thing Cynric could have imagined happening to him- and it did, unfortunately. He was in such a state of shock that when the Sorting Hat announced this decision, he had asked for it to repeat itself.

The answer did not change. While many a reptilian relative expressed disappointment in this, Cynric’s father had simply written a letter to him at school, saying that it would take a damned brave Rosier to be sorted into an opponent house. He called his son a gutsy little rapscallion and spared him any reproach. The boy’s qualms were soothed by the sentiment- mostly, though he didn’t realize it then, by the notion that his parents were more emotionally invested in him than they were with highbrow ideas of familial legacy.

His first summer back from Hogwarts, Cynric returned to find several suitcases on the manor porch- and a portkey prepped for use. Armandé Rosier had very recently taken to becoming an author of travel journals; she did this not out of any real ambition but for the very specific purpose of being able to whisk her son away from the Winchester estate at every opportunity given. He didn’t know this at the time and was nothing short of thrilled about leaving for a ‘holiday’ in the tropics.

Every summer, mother and son would be on their way to an exotic destination the moment little Rascal (now his father’s favoured nickname) stepped off the platform at King’s Cross. Sudan, Malaysia, Morocco, North America, Brazil, Spain. There was no shortage of places to escape the darker side of the Rosiers.

At school Cynric was a wallflower of sorts. His summer travels often meant that he hardly spent time with classmates outside of the academic terms and, being a natural introvert, the Gryffindor was more inclined to curl up with books in the common room than he was to chat about the latest Quiddy game (much to the dismay of his Hanover kinsmen). He was a member of many groups including the Wizarding Chess club, Astronomy society and the Art Appreciation club.... anything that allowed for minimal interaction.

In his 6th year at Hogwarts, Cynric’s father passed away. It was a sudden case of the Dragon Pox- a lethal illness for adults and one that slowly killed him with its symptoms over a course of months. With another two years left before he was allowed access to his inheritance, Cynric’s mother took over as legal guardian of the Rosier fortune. She was restricted from using much of it by a tight and binding legal contract; but even with these limitations, there was enough money for a comfortable living. Much to Rascal’s disfavor, Armandé took off with him to Tanzania directly after his father’s funeral. By now however, he understood the importance of keeping away from the pressures of his unsavory relatives.

    THE BREAKDOWN

The year that Cynric turned 18 and accepted control of his inheritance, life became considerably more stressful. He was the ideal scapegoat- no criminal record, blood relation, easily threatened.  Sinister relatives of the Rosier family found it easy to extract pockets of cash from the young and concerned introvert; his mother encouraged him to avoid trouble from them, whatever it took, and did not mind that her son’s safety came at the cost of their family fortune. She was growing old and tired of traveling... whisking him abroad at intervals was no longer a convenient option, not without her husband’s support or protection.

With his love for books it was not difficult for Cynric to find himself a menial position at Flourish & Blotts a few months after graduation. It was a mediocre paycheck but he was surrounded by stories and always had time to sit down at the end of every day, quill in hand. The weeks passed quickly, turning into months- and before he realized it the months had slowly grown into years. Rascal generally refused managerial promotions at the bookstore in preference of less working hours and more leisure time. He managed to publish several short stories and poems in popular literary journals.

At 22 years of age, the quiet young wizard was beginning to make a small name for himself... but for all this marginal success in his professional ambitions, Cynric was experiencing weighty family troubles. The causes were numerous. He disagreed with his relatives on a moral basis and worried constantly about the indubitably shady dealings he was unknowingly financing. At times, they would drop by his flat in London- or by his mother’s home in the Winchester residence to make veiled threats. Most days Rascal thought that he had only been a Gryffindor by name and felt a great sense of futility when it came to standing up for himself.

His worries were internalized; he rarely spoke of them to anyone and, for that matter, interacted with few friends at all. Only Armandé could see that her boy was slowly cracking on the inside but she did not know how to protect him from something as intangible as one’s own mind. Later on in that year, while trying to defend himself from a threatening relative, Rascal suffered a mental and emotional breakdown- causing the hex to backfire on himself. His relative fled and he was found by a concerned neighbor who brought him down to St.Mungo’s.

    ST.MUNGO’S

Three years. This was the length of Cynric’s commitment to the Janus Thickey ward of the fourth floor at St.Mungo’s hospital. They did not pass quickly. He was admitted in a state of near-hysterics, repeating nonsensical phrases over and over and over again (the Mediwitches had been forced to administer a sedative).

Even once settled, all he did was babble. It was very different from his typically quiet demeanor and nothing he said ever made much sense to the Healers. In his final two years at the hospital however, Rascal’s behavior grew calmer and it was obvious to his carers that he had become more conditioned for treatment. Typical methods were unfruitful when they discovered that he preferred picking apart their intentions or wondering off on different trains of thought. Healer Foley, who was then known to some as a skilled practitioner of Leglimens, was contacted by Rascal’s mother to assist.

The witch’s methods were unconventional and bold compared to common procedure. If anything, they forced Rascal to pay attention to his surroundings. His road to recovery was slow but progressive... relapses were sparse. As he approached his 24th birthday, assessments were put into place to ensure that he was safe for public release. This was hardly an issue with Rascal, whose only attempt at trying to harm someone had only resulted in his own unfortunate impairment.

    PROFESSIONAL LIFE

To say that Cynric Rosier was a changed man after his ‘stay’ at the Janus Thickey ward would be a terrible understatement. Many of those who knew him from before would go as far as saying that he wasn’t the same person at all.

Not that he much cared. The moment Rascal stepped out of the hospital and back into his London flat, a quill was taken up again. He wrote like a madman- quite literally. His first few stories were far too bizarre and lacked any sort of plot or structure; at least to the undiscerning eye. It was only a year after Rascal’s release that his books began going places.

And oh, the places they would go.

Rascal Rosier lured a cult following of intelligent young readers after his first two novels were published- his third, fourth and fifth stories were the ones that launched him into the literary stardom. Even in a Wizarding World of perfectly illogical adventures, he had managed to tailor bizarre and unorthodox narratives that continue to surprise the audiences.

In his personal life, Rascal sometimes visits his mother (who is relieved although she continues to be terribly confused by his recent manners) but he can normally be found galavanting about the city, country or continent in search of inspirational exploits. He continues to finance shady relatives  though they now approach him with caution. Nobody trusts a mad man, especially not a sane one- and Rascal is the maddest of them all.

    JOB & DUTIES
Cynric goes by his author pseudonym: Rascal Rosier although his real identity and appearance is generally well known by the public. He currently writes under contract with Trollhouse Publishing but goes through an average of three to four different editors over the course of a single writing project. He generates fairly profitable earnings for the company and receives enough royalties to live comfortably even without his family inheritance.

Cynric is a dedicated writer. When he has an idea in mind, he can sit down at his typewriter and rattle away for hours upon hours- days even, when he doesn’t wish to break a streak. He is considered to be the “boy wonder” of the industry because of the rate at which he had published his last few novels. When Rascal isn’t writing he is usually doing research. And by ‘research’, he usually means dragging people off to new places or building up little experiments around the city. His most recent experiment involved setting loose a small army of marching toy soldiers in a busy nightclub.

Years of working in a bookstore, even more years of dabbling in the industry. Many of Rascal’s novels have been (or currently are) on the bestseller lists of the Witch Weekly, the Prophet and Flourish & Blotts. Muggles might describe his stories as having the bizarre content of Haruki Murakami and the whimsical tones of Lemony Snicket. His books are titled as follows and published in this order...

    • Teeth of the Termite- An elderly wizard discovers that his home is infested with bloodthirsty termites and decides to set the building on fire. Fearing an arson charge, he embarks on a journey to escape his sleepy village in the Scottish highlands and instead becomes involved in a highly convoluted murder mystery.
    • The Fantabulous Lifestyles of Broken Beer Bottles - A collection of short stories and poetry told from the points of view of enchanted beer bottles in London city.
    • Kaleidoscopic Nunneries - Nothing to do with the title. A young Norwegian wizard is kidnapped by his elder brother and taught to hunt down Trolls in the Scandinavian countryside. Along the way, they meet a crazy man who believes himself to be Merlin the Great and several countryfolk with pitchforks strapped to their heads.
    • Poisonwood and Pulp - Set in the 1950s in colonial Malaya. A local witch is outcasted by her muggle society and chooses to leave the village with her daughter, Mariam, in tow. Parent and child encounter strange travelers in their journey, which reaches it climax with a perilous Nundu encounter.
    • A Borrowed Banister - Lucy Knowles wakes up one day to find that both her husband of ten years and her basement banister have gone missing. She must follow a set of elaborate clues to understand what has become of either prized possession.

    Cynric "Rascal" Rosier

    Age: 27 years old
    Character Biography: Rascal Rosier
Do any of your other Characters have Special Abilities?: Yes
If Yes, then Please provide their name and a link to their bio: Raine Almasy (Animagus) and Ira Almasy (Metamorphmagus)

    Special Ability: Occlumens
What level is this ability at?: Intermediate
At what age did your character gain this ability?: 23

How did they learn or hone this ability?: Fourth Floor of St.Mungo's Hospital, London- under the tutelage and guidance of Healer Delilah Foley. As part of the recovery of his mental state, Rascal was encouraged to learn significant aspects of Occlumency. He took well to the art and a year into treatment, asked to be taught it in full. Healer Foley obliged- the lessons helped consolidate his ongoing recovery at the Janus Thickey ward. The subject of Leglimency was rarely approached and certainly not taught.

Describe how the Special Ability influences their life.  What do they use it for?: As a younger person, Rascal was a sensitive boy with troubled sensibilities and a naturally reserved nature. He stills retains this strong sense of internal privacy as an adult. While most of his life (as an eccentric author) is an open book to the public, his thoughts are carefully guarded. What he knows of Occlumency allows him to do this with peace of mind- and to retain some sense of order within a complex and largely expeditious thought process.

Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special Ability: Occlumency, being the defense of the mind, had come surprisingly easily to Rascal. It is the first notion that occurs to him when he wakes (followed quite naturally by a tirade of much less serious ideas) and the last one to leave his mind in sleep. In the hours between, the skill exists in perfunctory form. Like reigns on a stallion- they are only exercised when needed and always with effectiveness. If used extensively, Rascal may experience headaches or a general sense of nausea.
