T H E O i. j a m e s W H I T M A Ns e v e n t h y e a r s l y t h e r i n14 ¾”, yew, phoenix feather; unyielding. An Ollivander.Physical Description6’2, 175 lbs. Dark blonde hair, blue eyes. Part Veela (¼).With his boyish good looks, toothy smile, and innate, careless grace, Theo Whitman is, without a doubt, an exceptionally beautiful kid.At 6’2, there is little he has left to grow. Broad-shouldered and muscles lightly defined through the fabric of his clothes – all traces of baby fat long since gone – Theo moves with the confidence of one who’s been comfortable in his skin since the very beginning. Every step and gesture is as fluid as it is minimal, deliberate as it is carefree. Despite preferring more sedentary hobbies (such as reading, potion making, and chess), he remains in excellent shape, fully capable of landing physical blows harder than verbal ones, and just as precise....in theory, of course. (He would never.)For appearances, Theo’s attire is usually (if not always) classic, tasteful, and expensive. Whether it’s formal or casual, muggle or wizarding (he finds that it pays to adapt), the young wizard never fails to give off a titled, moneyed air—the impression of one who is used to power. But it is his eyes, perhaps, or his mouth, that is his greatest weapon; together, they endear and intimidate. Manipulate. And the worst thing about them, the very worst, is that they never, if ever, lie. That he has a tendency to lick his lips–like an eager child, or a predator–probably doesn’t help at all.PersonalitySweet. Inquisitive. Pitiless.Gifted with a silver tongue and a nonchalant manner, Theo is, simply put, a diplomat; it’s not so much that he knows what to say, but how to say it, when to say it, and to whom—the right word, he’s discovered, to the right person at right time and place, carefully phrased against a backdrop of subtext and an overhang of allusion… can do so much more than the most well-prepared speech. Because those are most effective only at their moments; find him a person who could recall more than a phrase, whereas he will bring forth another, one completely persuaded – or cowed – by a mere suggestion whispered in that person’s ear.And Theo can be very, very persuasive. If there might have been a threat carefully implied as well, even as his tone is kept pleasant and his smile utterly innocent… well. So be it. We do what we must, as his stepfather used to say, and as a scion of Whitman tradition Theo isn’t one to disappoint. But he can also be charming, and more often than not he lets those angelic good looks speak for him; on the surface he appears sunny and lighthearted, almost strangely unfettered by the awkwardness or anxieties that plague many of his peers. With a single smile he can easily bring to mind sunshine and sparkles and baby animals—all the better to give an impression of a confident young man with drive, integrity, potential and charm. Worse still, the boy is charming—truly, extremely, worryingly so, in a way that seems almost anything but human. And all too often does the façade fit the face; very rarely does he let that impish smile drop, or the innocent glint in his eyes reveal those unfathomable reserves of malice behind them. And therein lays the danger: this does happen, and often. Ruthless, ambitious, and calculating, Theo is incredibly manipulative, and constant exposure to subservience, indulgence, and even outright encouragement has only exacerbated this. While rules and norms may sometimes hold him back, that’s only because he allows them to. Short of murder, there is little he won’t do (or won’t ‘have’ done) to get what he wants… and at the rate he’s progressing, sometimes even that doesn’t seem much of a leap away. Because although it rarely rears its ugly head, Theo has a monstrous temper. Only a few times has he exhibited it, and once he was sent away he was punished severely for it every time—but all he’d learned was to channel it wisely, a lesson he still considers ‘unfortunate but necessary’ to this day. As a result, he looks down on those who have never had to endure such an ‘education’ behind that radiant smile he offers; he is quick to assess, measure—judge. And woe to those he finds wanting.Violent tendencies aside, however, the boy isn’t a complete fiend—not to the (very) few he truly respects and cares for, anyway. To them, he is fiercely loyal and eager to please (or at least patient, honest, and thoughtful), and often blurs the line between genuinely protective and outright possessive; it’s for them he makes room for ‘best interests’ other than his own, and frequently avails himself to render assistance to their needs. Otherwise, he is every inch the charismatic princeling with whom every day can be an adventure… or some awful, horrifying nightmare. For when people are unfortunate enough to have had more than a glimpse of his true nature, his eyes and smile are often the last thing they see before they wake up screaming. He has, after all, learned from only the best.HistoryJanuary 19, 1993; Cardiff, Wales. As the scion of an exceptionally wealthy branch of a very prestigious family, young Theo never lacked for anything. As a rampant little sociopath, he left bloody handprints on the walls and mangled corpses all over the manor. His governess at the time, Frau Pech, lived in a state of constant horror. He did make friends, but only one would truly have both his respect and affection: Alexandra Carstairs. Everyone else, it seemed, could go hang, and he demonstrated this by way of an extremely cavalier manner regarding their welfare. After one incident too many, Theo was finally put into isolation. Upon Frau Pech’s suggestion, he was taken to a discreet “last resort” facility for “troubled youths”, where he stayed for a year. From there he emerged, by all appearances, a changed boy.As it would turn out, this would not be the case. During his stay Theo had learned—not the error of his ways, but how to channel them more... productively. Gradually his ambition had been matched with foresight; competitiveness with control; and ruthlessness with pragmatism, until he could be trusted to behave in polite company. In time, he charmed nearly everyone he cared to.More importantly, bodies stopped appearing around the property. Playdates no longer ended in hysterical, traumatized tears. There was nothing left to apologize for, and that was what mattered. But life never did run smoothly—not even for one so fortunate as Theo. While he was for his second year at Hogwarts, Madeleine was kidnapped. It was the first time he was moved to strong emotion for someone other than himself or Alex (and family, at that) and the aftermath would provide a crucial (if carefully hidden) turning point in his relationships.Once the Memory Charm was cast, he grew closer to Madeleine, making room in his priorities for the sister he had once been so indifferent about; meanwhile, his contempt for his parents cemented, pushing him further towards independence. He would never so far as to denounce them, but he became more and more fixated on establishing himself beyond the family name. He entered himself in competitions, contests that would further prove his own worth—his obvious superiority over others; he charmed important personages, so that they’d remember him when he was older—going so far as to net himself a tutor. Although it would be some time before he’d come of age, Theo went on to make his family very, very rich.HogwartsAmbitious, involved, and highly intelligent, Theo stands out among his peers. Formerly a member of Duelling Club, to this day he is the President of Potions Club and Head Boy. He has also been a prized assistant of Potions Mistress Lucrezia Di Luca, and won several junior-level potions competitions. Overall, he is known to his teachers as a brilliant and capable young man, if somewhat arrogant. But that self-confidence is not without merit; he has OWLs in Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History, Potions and Transfiguration—all O’s, and plans to take their NEWTs next spring.Presently he looks forward to a promising career in business with Halcyon Enterprises, though every so often the siren song of politics catches his attention... Theo has progressed to the point of being able to speak freely without a recipient. At what age did your character gain this ability?Since birth, though he did not show signs of being one until he was three—a small, rosy-cheeked kid with curls of spun gold, who’d gotten himself past the child-safe wards of a relative’s storeroom. There, he was later found holding himself up by the edge of a table, happily chattering away to a tank full of snakes in Parseltongue. It was one of his first manifestations. How and where did they learn/hone this ability?Because of its notorious reputation, Theo’s newfound ability was strictly kept under wraps. Most Parselmouths tracked their ability to Salazar Slytherin, and since the Dark Lord’s second Fall hostility towards all things Dark was only intensified; a Whitman possessing the ability posed a risk to their good name. Worse, it would bring Theo’s parentage into question. As such, the young boy was urged to keep it a secret from their Whitman relatives—his step-father especially.Still, a gift was a gift, no matter how ‘Dark’ others perceived it to be, and so during the scant handful of times mother and son spent time with each other the boy was encouraged to exercise his ability. There were trips to the zoo, and exhibitions. And when Idara could not take him herself (which was often), he was left in the care of his aunt and grandmother, Naila and Vareena Ferrari. With them, Theo was further exposed to snakes and other, similar creatures. As he held their hands, he practiced on serpents both magical and mundane brought out by their handlers for his benefit. Some of the more indifferent specimens refused to respond, but for the most part, the rest proved to be quite receptive.Afterwards, he was gifted with his very own pet Western Coachwhip to practice on. His collection has only grown since then—in size, and lethality. Most notable among his pets are Euryale and Stheno, a pair of black-necked spitting cobras.Describe what happens to your character during and after using this ability, as well as any effects it has on others.Like any other display of Parseltongue, Theo’s ability manifests itself as fluid, incomprehensible hissing (-almost musical, if you’re into that sort of thing), and like any other display of Parseltongue only serpents, serpent-like creatures, and other Parselmouths can understand him. Although he still is, technically, considered intermediate in skill, Theo is quite advanced for his age and has only shown signs of becoming even better; so far he’s shown amazing proficiency in persuading—and befriending—the more magical kinds. Envious of a certain Ravenclaw’s fledgling ability (not to mention totally charmed by the idea of another, potentially easier way to steal someone else’s secrets and protect his own), a twelve-year-old Theo hit the books, and hit them hard; what he couldn’t find – or was allowed – from the school library, he was happily given by his parents, who were equally charmed by their adorable son’s obvious precocity. (His potential success would only give them one more thing to brag about, after all.) By the time he returned to his parents’ villa, Theo was well versed in a number of theories and methods studied and devised by earlier practitioners, and began his own training almost immediately. In Legilimency, he succeeded almost two weeks before fourth year began—Occlumency achieved a week earlier. How and where did they learn/hone this ability? To give him some form of idea as to what to expect, Theo researched intensively on the subject (as well as pestered Alex incessantly) prior actual training. Once he gained both abilities, he has been training since then. However, although he’s become both with remarkable speed, actual progress with each has been a different story. While he does display some aptitude for Occlumency (much to his dismay), he does not for Legilimency (also to his dismay), and making further headway with either has been difficult; his dissatisfaction with this is a rather sore point for him, and heckling him about it makes him rather… testy. Because of this, he prefers his best method for deflection and prying– speaking –and so his skills, at the moment, are not what they could have been by now. What do they use this ability for and how does it influence their life?Ha. What not to use it for?Once he’s skilled enough in Legilimency, Theo cheerfully plans on using it influence the minds of others to further his own interests. Whether it’s for the perk of immediately identifying lies, or sifting through the thoughts of another, or simply to invade for the sake of amusement—Theo fully intends on embracing all possibilities. He looks forward to putting the skill to good use, especially once he settles into his chosen career. Already he employs its counterpart as a means of protection for his own secrets. For now, he uses it to cause plaguing headaches while he rifles through the minds of others, and embed fodder for nightmares as something to remember him by. Often the result is one more rumor for the gossip mill, with nothing solid to corroborate stories but a lingering sense of fear.Describe what happens to your character during and after using this ability, as well as any effects it has on others. As it is with most new practitioners, practicing either gives Theo headaches, annoying, plaguing ones that make him short of temper. While he has no known issues focusing, he does with finesse, and so comes off as rather… brutal, in his manner.Which is to say, while he has no problem persuading – or provoking – one into eye contact, he is not unlike a terrier with a new toy—eager and vicious, as well as equally uncaring of the subject’s comfort unless it is in some way detrimental to him.A fair trade, he thinks, for the headaches that come after. It is only with a select few that his manner changes. On the other hand, Occlumency is a slightly less painful story. For a teenager who, by the standards of some, has some issues with impulse control, Theo retains remarkable control over his thoughts, making Occlumency marginally easier to practice and the ensuing headaches less painful than they could be.
