Heliotrope LeJean was frequently enthralled with the dry water and mist that trickled from the merperson features of castle decor just before the classroom. An enchantment that was enlarged for the purposes of the class today. The History of Magic classroom was vastly different from its regular arrangement. For starters, the usual tables were gone. Instead a line of wooden bleachers, that showed signs of Tournament audience use in the past, stretched along the same wall from the doorway. But as Sissel knew, magic could always surprise you) Skip to next post Re: [Nov 20] Upon These Stones [2nd Years!] Reply #1 on August 20, 2012, 07:50:23 PM Tynan, for once, was sort of paying attention - this was a considerable improvement over his attention last year. It was largely due to the change in professor. The crotchety old woman from last year had made him not want to pay attention just to spite her, to test the bounds. Jowd, though a bit too quirky for Tynan's liking, didn't have that issue so far. But he was proving that no one but his Gran could tell about history and make it interesting; Gran left all the dirty bits in. But, in fact - as unusual as it was - Tynan was one of the ones who raised his hand, though not as high as Eirene's shot (what a shock). But he didn't wait to be called, in typical fashion, and lowered his hand as he spoke, arm falling to the desk with a thud."Sir, th' Goblin Rebellions took place in the mid-17th century an' up tae th' present," He said, thick Scottish drawl only accented by the non-interest in his tone. "N' they think that th' wand legislation acts might'ta been a cause of some of 'em." Pulling his sleeves down, then folding them back up again, his eyes darted around the classroom. Without the desks, it seemed much larger, and the rubbish scattered across the floor was intriguing--he'd been to a play once before, in Thurton, and the classroom today seemed to echo the stage's odd lighting and carefully arranged props. He was familiar with goblins mostly through his mother's anecdotes, family stories stretching back generations. But of course, most of the people featuring in these stories had little to do with the rest of the wizarding world and more to do with the sort of thing that went on in Thurton, Norfolk. His great, great grandfather had befriended a herd of centaurs. His many-great aunt had confronted a troll over the village's many missing billy goats. A cousin had once discovered a goblin mine in the area, but had not passed on its exact location. In any case, upon being accepted to Hogwarts Asher had fully expected to spend his first year talking with centaurs and werewolves and goblins, and, with he possible exception of the werewolves, he'd been sorely disappointed. He still didn't fully understand their exclusion, but had been assured that most of these creatures were perfectly awful.MacFusty answered the question, though Grin's hand had been on its way up as well, along with a decent portion of the Ravenclaw students in the room. Settling down again, he prepared to listen, books balanced on his knee and a quill in one hand. In theory, this was to take notes with, but usually Asher was too busy paying attention to write anything down until after class. Still, many teachers took the parchment as a sign of attentiveness, even if it was blank. Although the unrest of today is not as bad as what the rebellions were, it's correct to recognize that things have never been completed smoothed over. The use of a wand is one of the reasons, anybody else have one while I get this worked out?" The professor was holding several rolled scripts. As he spoke a mound of clothing emerged from the mist, supported by two tiny legs under the mess. "Within the 17th Century, or 1600s was the most important and legendary of the rebellions. Because it happened rather close to Hogwarts, within this Scottish country. The rebellion of 1612. So who wants to relieve it? Who wants to act? There's a few parts to be filled by you." When Tynan spoke out of turn, her expression soured, then flitted back to excited as the professor caused figures to appear in the mist.Predictably, Eirene threw her hand in the air, yet with not quite as much verve as before. "I'd like to, professor!" She volunteered, then hastily added, "But I don't want to play a goblin. I want to be someone powerful. And pretty."Oh, to be powerful and pretty. Tynan and Mairead could play the goblins; that would suit them well!"It will be safe, won't it? The reenactment?" She glanced at Noriko, not wanting her to suffer more than she had to. Hey Dingy, why don't you put that down and give them a look."The bundle of clothes with legs was in fact the house elf Dingy, who as a goblin looked very much the same although slightly different. For one, a set of sackcloth with so many repairs it wasn't proper clothes, as Dingy had protested until the professor had made clear that the clothes were only worn for the reenactment, not at any other time. It made Dingy strive to be an extra dutiful stagehand. Besides the costume he was darkened with burnt cork and instead of a pot on his head, it was a wooden bucket. The goblin/elf blinked, unsure what to do. History of Magic was a dreadfully boring course and Maxen was loathe to attend. Had he not been a tad bit afraid of expulsion, he wouldn't attend all year. As it was, he usually came in late and took no notes at all. In fact, his bag was still closed and the only reason he had a quill in his hand was because it was made of sugar and he had an insatiable sweet tooth. As the professor and students started talking about Bilius the Boring and Yabbers the Yawn, Maxen had to fight himself to stay awake.Usually he wouldn't mind dozing off in Jowd's class, it wasn't as if he was going to listen anyway, but today was different. Today he had an opportunity to get in a few laughs, and if anyone knew Maxen Whitman, they knew that he enjoyed a good chuckle... as long as it was at someone else's expense. Where one house elf, there always seemed to be at least one behind it at Hogwarts, they seemed to breed like fecking bacteria. The creatures were especially useful for a bit of a laugh, since they were so stupid and spoke in those squeaky voices, like some deformed four year old.
