What to Expect

This seminar will start with the basics.  We'll cover general ideas about the Tarot[1] as well as a bit of history and social context.  We'll start out talking about Tarot Decks -- how they're made, how they're used, the different types, and the differences between Muggle and Wizarding world Decks.  We will work hands-on with actual Tarot Decks, and several will be provided for character use.  Participants will practice shuffling, cutting, and dealing cards.  We'll move into discussing card meanings and doing sample readings.  We may break into dyads (groups of two) and read each others cards, or do group readings.  We can also discuss the controversial Tarot card game sold in Knockturn that goes by the name of Terr-Oh![2]

The seminar will follow the flow of the group that shows up, so there is a lot of flexibility.  If you have any ideas or suggestions, send me a PM or have your character introduce it!

You!  Anyone!  All years and schools are welcome.  Come one, come all.

Where and When will we Meet?

This seminar meets every week on Wednesday before supper (if you miss one or more, no worries, feel free to join in at any point.  New participants are always welcome).  The first one will be held towards the end of November, on the 18th[3].  The time that we meet is 5pm-6pm.  We will roleplay this as the first Tarot seminar of the year!

We'll be using the empty classroom on the Sixth Floor.  There will be four long, dark wooden tables to sit at with a wide working surface.  All tables face the front of the small room.  There's a large semi-circular table at the front of the room which serves as the podium and display table.  There are many small arm chairs and circular tables for two around the sides of the room, with indigo-coloured tablecloths laid over them.

What to Expect:

This seminar will be a philosophical inquiry into the art of potions-making in modern times.  We will examine the roots of cauldron-based magic and the symbolism inherent in Alchemy.  How has this changed in modern times?  What does practical Alchemy look like for the modern Witch?  How can having a connection to the Old Arts strengthen our Potions Making skills?  This seminar may have some smaller hands on components, but it is predominantly a venue for discussion.  We'll examine astrology, cosmology, Hermetic thought, and Greek natural philosophy.  All of our inquiries will be aimed toward thinking about making Potions.  This is a living, breathing class, so if there is something in particular about potions making that you want to explore, put it out there and we'll have some fun with it.

Who is this Seminar For?

All schools and all years are allowed.  The leading Witch of the seminar will adapt to the group that presents itself.  All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. 

Where and When will we Meet?

The Modern Potions Making and the Ancient Arts seminar will be held every Friday starting November 27th, 2009, from 5pm until 6pm, which is just before the dinner hour.  We'll meet in the Empty Classroom on the Fourth floor.  We'll write our first seminar together here!
