Arcturus "Arc" Mordecai Hollingbury
32 (January 23 1980)
London, England
Halfblood
Ravenclaw, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Healer, Potions and Plants Poisoning, St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries

Wand

Wood: Hawthorn, 11.75 inches
Core: Phoenix Feather
Strength: Supple
Surface: Smooth

Bought from Ollivander’s in August 1991. Has a swirly, fine grain and very polished, and extremely straight, with a slightly worn handle carved into it. The wand itself is a dark, slightly rosy brown and is fairly thin, perhaps reflecting Hollingbury’s physical lankiness. When he first touched it, it shot out a small spurt of white smoke. He is very affectionate and protective over his wand, and keeps it well polished as well as wrapping linen around the handle to keep it clean.

Appearance

Arcturus is rather recognisable for his calm, pleasant face, a little thin with high cheekbones and fairly tanned skin. His dark brown eyes have a bright, but tranquil, appearance. He’s always had some trouble growing proper facial hair and whatever he grows looks scraggly on him, so he keeps his face clean shaven. He has very few age lines. Arcturus has a sort of permanent look of vague curiosity and ease with the world most of the time, though for his age his eyes have already sunken in somewhat.

His most outstanding feature is neck-length hair that has remained where it is due to him trimming the growing side. He now ties his hair up into a messy bun at the back as a habit, picked up from his time in Malaysia where the weather was too hot and humid for long hair. The white side of his hair is due to a curse that hit him on the side of his head; it no longer grows, so he can never cut his hair short. His black hair meanwhile has faded a little and become slightly brown.

The rest of him is relatively unremarkable. Standing at 5’10” or 177.8 cm, he has gained a bit muscle over from Malaysia, though he'll state that most of it has gone into his legs due to plenty of swimming and hiking. He can help carry people, but only with his wand. When at work, he dresses neatly and professionally, ensuring that his job doesn't leave his robes askew. The exception is a pair of running shoes he normally renews every year or so, as he rushes about work very often. He’s not too fond of the look, but at work he considers his clothes to be more functional than aesthetically pleasing. He keeps his wand in a holster around his left forearm for easy drawing, especially in the occasion of defending himself.

When off work he dresses very, very casually - almost Muggle-ish. His wardrobe very significantly features hooded sweatshirts, along with simple shirts. They usually have long sleeves that somehow extend past his wrist. He gives off the air of someone who's very comfortable in his skin. This is only at home. He also sometimes wears plain rugby shirts, or a tshirt paired with a green jacket. Jeans are his staple trousers, though, even in the summer.

When outside he pulls on a scarf and dark grey longcoat that very much accentuates his thin form. The scarf is either a Ravenclaw scarf or a very old green one he's rather fond of.

In formal situations he depends on simple clothes without embellishments, such as a plain dress shirt and a no-nonsense waistcoat, and goes for a casually messy look as he doesn't actually like feeling stuffy or restricted in any way. He actually does clean up well on these occasions, it's just that they're so few in between that not a lot of people ever see him this way.

There is a large scar on the right side of his ribs where a certain ex-friend stabbed him in an attempt to kill him. He also physically bears scars on his torso from detention during his seventh year at Hogwarts, but his biggest concerns lie with the largest scar. He will only freely talk about it to close friends if asked.

Personality

Arcturus is, on the outside, very peaceful, patient and calm. His mother describes his patience as a “thick layer of snow” on top of everything he is, and can be near impenetrable at times. He is a logical and analytical thinker, and can be a little cold in the eyes of people who don’t know him so well. His softspoken manner offsets this a little, but it still gives an impression of being rather unfeeling and without empathy.

Despite his stolid exterior, there are a few buttons that can instantly melt that layer, such as making light of the Second Wizarding War. Perhaps with his tendency to hide his emotions, he has come to bottle up his feelings – a fragile glass bottle in his own right, vulnerable in the presence of a single well-placed tap. Those who are close to him know that he only really shows his feelings to the people he trusts, so it can be hard to decipher what he’s expressing when talking to him for the first time. Nevertheless, he is currently trying to show more emotion so people don't misinterpret him.

He’s known for being protective, but he doesn’t get into unnecessary conflict because he’s very aware of his lack of physical strength or skill with duelling; he’s more the kind of person who walks away before any conflict arises. If conflict does arise, he tries to not be in it anyway, mostly by avoiding conflict as much as possible. Still, if he is forced to, he will defend with his life. He is also very particular about rules and keeping to them, although he can bend the rules on the occasion he recognises requires a little disobedience.

Arcturus tends to be quite dry in humour along with being self-deprecating. He always means well, and though he doesn’t admit it he will go above and beyond to help and listen to people who need someone to talk to.

On the good side, he is kind, patient and tries to see the best in people, disciplined, motivated, and highly organised. On the bad side, he has cynical views on life and the world due to his past experiences, clings onto the past and never seems to forgive himself for his mistakes due to setting impossibly high standards and distant goals for himself, and constantly puts himself down due to how hard he is on himself.

He is heavily passionate about his job, and will honestly take challenges as something to work on, even if it is detrimental to his health in the long run. Arcturus suffers from a chronic helper syndrome - he will help people look after themselves and neglect to do the same himself, and sometimes overhelping. Though he is known to stop once that's pointed out to him, he often doesn't manage to recognise the signs when he starts doing it.

Passion is mostly the source of his motivation and drive, but what hinders him from truly making lasting relationships is his passiveness and anxiety. Arcturus actively suffers from anxiety attacks, and while he does not show or talk about it, he has suffered from depression in the past. He finds it difficult to move past these neuroses, often letting them control him rather than the other way round in a bid to let it pass instead of having to endure the pain. As a result he considers himself a "broken, ugly mess" who is too weak to face himself, and if there's anyone he hates the most, it's himself. He is highly self-aware of every action he makes.

Post-Malaysia he is more willing to try new things and take small leaps of faith in trusting people, but he also takes regret and mistakes much more heavily than he has before. His social skills are still somewhat lacking due to his anxiety, and he feels more and more inadequate each passing day with his failures to overcome what he thinks are trivial matters in the long-term.

Post-dementing, his more negative traits (guilt, uncertainty, cynicism, passiveness) have blown up in his struggle to cope with the memories he's locked away resurfacing and intensifying his anxiety. In an attempt to make the problem more manageable he's mentally separated that side of him and forces himself to remain the same. The result is a person divided into two extremely distinct faces, but one suppressed so heavily that it is liable to implode. He refuses to acknowledge that this is detrimental to him more than it is to anyone else.

Legilimens are likely to hear the thoughts of the second face far more strongly than anything else. Since it comprises more of his negative traits than positive, they are likely to be alarmed by how aggressive and arrogant it is over the facade he presents to the public. It is also the embodiment of the highly aware part of him; being unable to switch it off or reconcile with it, it instead watches him as a "second pair of eyes" in his waking hours. Because of this he finds it difficult to have fun, since it criticises everything he does.

Behaviour

He has taken up smoking in order to alleviate stress, and doesn't see putting them down anytime soon. He prefers Muggle brands and doesn't really like to show that to people, because it makes him feel somewhat cheap.

His hobbies are reading, swimming and charm studies/making. First and foremost is reading, as he is highly intelligent and often requires as much mental stimulation as he can cram in one day. He is bisexual, though the number of people who know this are limited to Johann Storm, Elixa Mordent and his parents. It is common for people to assume he's straight, gay or asexual.

His hair is a highly speculated topic with people who don't know the origin of it. Arc has kept it for the following reasons:

  • Penance for his past
  • A reminder of what he has chosen to do today
  • An important part of his identity
  • People's opinions towards his hair are a quick, if shallow way to for him to gauge how much he trusts someone
  • Entertainment - he likes to listen to people speculate about his hair without ever telling them the truth

He refuses to dye his hair to this day. Post-dementing he has dyed it in an attempt to not stand out so much and not be 'himself', though he secretly hates and derides himself for it.

He usually has many nicknames pertaining to his black and white hair. As of recent times the only person who calls him "Badger" is Johann Storm, and he is a-okay with that as a permanent thing.

When Arc gets angry, the air around him drops in temperature. This drop can be so great that ice begins to form on the floor around his feet, or even on objects and walls nearby, as frost. This is something he's never been able to consciously control and is from when he was a child, and only ever happens when he's angry with someone else.

He has a ridiculous sweet tooth, and loves Honeydukes fudge, Cauldron Cakes and ice cream.

He gets aloof around aurors because his sister was one and he can never quite get over being reminded of her whenever he sees a red coat. He generally is wary as well because he doesn't really trust them, but is still willing to comply if they need him.

He dislikes and distrusts the Ministry of Magic as a whole, because of the propaganda and lies spread by the MoM before and during the Second War. He is all right with trusting specific individuals, but by and large most Ministry people are 1. unknown to him and 2. not enough for him to trust.

His personal methods of mental stimulation reveal that he's extremely proficient with math and numbers, aiding him in his potions calculations. He has the ability to calculate everything he needs for his work mentally and quickly; he doesn't need to write workings on paper unless he wants to triple-check, get a second opinion, or show proof of his work.

History

Arcturus is the second child and the only son of a British, heavily halfblood family with some Greek blood, and was born in London. He went to a Muggle preschool and happily mixed around with other children his age, but on the advice of his parents kept his magical origins secret.  His father wasn't so keen on attending one, but this being London, he gave in when his wife pointed out that their somewhat nosier neighbours would poke around and might uncover something by accident. He only stayed in said school for a few years  - Arcturus did not go to any other school.

While there he felt very different from the others since he knew he was magical and not anyone else. Therefore he found it hard to make lasting friends with the Muggle children and mostly kept to himself.

Both he and his older sister, Alethea, attended Hogwarts at roughly the same time but only for a few years, his sister eventually graduating and  successfully becoming an Auror. Arcturus looked up to her as a role model; between school terms they would play together despite having a few occasions of sibling rivalry and jealousy from time to time. Unlike him, Alethea was very ambitious and confident of herself and her abilities, and sometimes could be a bit thoughtless in telling Arcturus that he was a bit too quiet and naïve. He got used to it after a while, but secretly aspired to be a Ministry official – he considered being an Auror out of his abilities, but it didn’t mean he couldn’t work for the government.

Arcturus was not particularly adventurous, preferring the warmth of his common room and the comfort of books. He didn’t quite like duelling when he was introduced to it (and Gilderoy Lockhart just made it worse), and he didn’t have good balance during his flying lessons and having some accidents. This later developed into broom avoidance; he’s terrible at using a broom.

Still, he took great delight in Potions, Charms and Herbology. Clever where needed and hardworking when he couldn’t rely on his brain, he got fairly competitive with himself and always strove to earn good grades in his subjects. While he did enjoy the logical, linear (and sometimes not so linear) procedures of Potions, he discovered he had some creativity when it came to Charms as well. Transfigurations was a little hard for him, but Arcturus was persistent and gave himself time to figure it out when he wasn’t busy with anything else. He did fairly well in Defence Against the Dark Arts, and found he had an aptitude for the Shield Charm, possibly due to his protective nature.

As far as dislike for subjects went, he found Divination boring because it hardly made sense to him in any way no matter how much he looked into the subject. While he didn’t completely dislike History of Magic, Professor Binns didn’t make the subject very enjoyable for him. He managed to get through it based on rote learning, and to this day can still talk about a few historical dates, although his eyes will glaze over and he will just sound like he’s reading from a textbook. He also did Care of Magical Creatures, but while he was interested in it he didn’t invest much time into it as he wasn’t passionate about the subject.

Regarding OWLs and NEWTs, Arcturus scored at least Es in everything but Divination (P), Care of Magical Creatures (A) and History of Magic (A). He got Os in Charms, Potions and Herbology, and – thanks to Dumbledore’s Army – Defence Against the Dark Arts. He still attributes the rekindling of his interest in the subject to them.

When the Ministry fell on August 1 1997, Alethea died while trying to stop the Death Eaters from mercilessly killing any innocents who got into their way. This news was received by Mordecai, their father, who passed it on to his wife and son at home while Arcturus was preparing for his seventh year at Hogwarts.

Mordecai persuaded his wife Lydia to flee to Greece, as a Muggleborn and in danger of being imprisoned by the new administration. Mordecai himself was present when the Muggle-Born Registration Commission was established, and was not at all pleased by this change, but he continued working in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. The Hollingburys came under fire for their blood status during the summer, and lost many old friends as a result. It was around this time Arcturus’ view of the world, originally still naïve and optimistic, changed because of these events. The loss of his sister and the departure of his mother turned him slightly cynical and bitter, but more determined to work harder at what he does. He kept to his friends within Hogwarts and was less sociable and warm to strangers or people he did not completely trust and know.

He did not enjoy his seventh year despite his hard work because of the iron grip over the school, and was known to have been punished and put into detention for refusing to practise the Dark Arts. When the Battle of Hogwarts began, he discarded his former dislike for fighting specially for this, where he finally started showing full potential with the Shield and Patronus Charms and protecting his classmates where he could.

After the war, he reverted to his normal self, but still with a slight bitterness. His mother returned home, which helped to alleviate things a little, but in general the War left its own mark on him that hasn’t quite disappeared.

When he graduated from Hogwarts in 1998, his dislike for the Ministry and the fresh memories of the fighting made him turn to taking up an internship at St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. The internship lasted for around a year or so, before he decided that he did truly want to go into the career and went in for training. It is known that he trained as a nurse until 2003, when he finally gained a Healer-in-training position at the Hospital. The staff found him a diligent and hardworking student who did love to experiment and had a skill for creating potions at their full potential. He eventually became a Healer in 2006, and has been working there ever since.

He is known to enjoy Cauldron Cakes, Honeydukes fudge and Whizzing Fizzbees, and has a very strong dislike for the word “Mudblood”. His Patronus is a kingsnake; he doesn’t use the spell if he can afford it because many tend to assume he’s associated with the Dark Arts due to his Patronus.

Arcturus is no musician or singer, but he is certainly a dancer. He loves Celtic, Irish and Scottish music. While he's no professional and knows little about Irish dance, it's the only music that can truly get him to let himself go. He actually has a natural talent for dance, but he's never really explored it fully since he's usually too caught up with his potions.

In terms of languages, Arcturus speaks and understands Greek and French and some Latin.

Skills

Potioneer
Arc has always had a skill for potions. Be it being able to calculate formulae and mixtures or analyse and observe combinations of ingredients, he seems to catch on very quickly and apply his knowledge efficiency within this subject. He also enjoys experimentation within this field, citing it as his major source of risk and excitement in his life (and possibly the only one he trusts since he usually has control of the situation).

Being meticulous, following instructions and trying out things based off them as well as paying plenty of attention to detail makes him a dedicated potioneer.

Cooking
Arc very much applies his potion skills to cooking as well. Having been taught at 12 in preparation for his future (on the demands of his mother), he has a good knowledge of Greek and British recipes, and delights in using herbs, spices and wine to complement his dishes.

However, he does not experiment for new dishes. He does, however, take it upon himself to improve recipes because he enjoys the challenge and he likes feeling confident about himself over that.

Duellist
Arcturus never really liked duelling, but Umbridge's reign over the school in 1995-1996 combined with the OWLs made him join Dumbledore's Army, where he adapted and learned quickly regarding Defence Against the Dark Arts. He still attributes his good grades in the subject to the DA.

He rejoined it in the 1997-1998 year due to a need to rebel against being taught the Dark Arts. This was crucial for him during the Battle of Hogwarts.

After the Battle of Hogwarts, Arcturus expressed his desire of improving to his father, who has mostly trained him from then onwards.

Arc is on the level of an advanced duellist, though his fighting style is more on the defensive - using Shield Charms - than offensive. He also chooses to use non-lethal spells or cast spells non-verbally to reduce their effectiveness due to a promise he made to himself to never hurt others.

Healing
Well as a healer, obviously. His passion for his career has led him to practise what appears to be "bespoke medicine" - a treatment carefully tailored around his patients' needs as determined by him and other healers, rather than applying a generic or standard treatment. This includes his in-depth study into usage of blood regarding its magical properties and what it can be used for in diagnosis. He also reads Muggle medicine, though he understands very little of chemistry, biology or physics if at all; he's more interested in the social consequences and implications of various Muggle techniques as well as beliefs. He won't admit this openly, to avoid being ridiculed by his colleagues for his rather unconventional interests.

Regardless, everything he does is always for the benefit of his patients, or at least well-meaning enough, and will immediately try and make up for any mistakes he makes.

Charms
Though Arc doesn't have a creative bone in his body, he loves coming up with new spells. They don't necessarily work, or are 100% perfect, but his love for charms takes it into his stride. He reads plenty of books on charm-making and the analysis of such spells, and can be found making notes even if he doesn't plan on furthering them. It's his little mental challenge.

So far he has come up with one charm that serves his needs, but since there's weaknesses in it he's decided not to use it until he's improved it somewhat.

Fluid Manipulation
As of 2011 Arcturus has found an affinity for being able to manipulate fluids (namely, water and blood) without the use of a wand. Only small amounts are involved (more than 300ml and he has major difficulty and a lot of mental strain) and the fluid must be in a container or a narrow tube. He is not able to manipulate water vapour as the amount needed to do anything significant with it is too little. He usually uses this for mundane tasks (stirring cauldrons is more efficient if ingredients are combined more thoroughly; adding water while cooking; separating blood samples for tests) but he is aware that he's also capable of weaponising the small amounts of water he can manipulate, and control a person's blood flow with very little amounts required.

The extent of this also covers being able to manipulate a person, which in fact he has not done (and absolutely refuses to do so).

Job Duties

Day to day work involves seeing to patients who have been recently admitted as well as checking up on other patients. He may have a special patient that requires specific care, in which case he’ll be occupied with treating them and looking for more remedies that may be more efficient than what he has on hand. He also spends time measuring out doses for patients, a tedious period of time where no one is advised to disturb him; he generally leaves a little timetable outside his workplace to remind people when to talk to him.

As evening falls, he can be found taking stock of antidotes, draughts, potions and ointments within the Hospital as well as various potion ingredients and updating the paperwork for the patients within his floor. He sometimes works overtime to complete this if he doesn’t have anyone else around to help him. If he has something to do at night (midnight treatments etc.) he stays around if no one else is there.

While he may return home every day, he will quickly Apparate or use the Floo Network if there are any emergencies concerning his floor. He is known for using Awakening Potions, although not as much since he has sort of developed the ability to fall into deep sleep as quickly as possible.

Part of his work also includes writing reports and overviews of the running of the floor, as well as any suggestions on improvements. He is known for his punctuality and dedication; some patients also like him because he listens to each of them and considers their concerns should they have any. He also likes to experiment with potions in his free time and read up on any new medicines to keep up his knowledge.

Expertise

Arcturus currently works as one of the Healers on the Potion and Plant Poisoning floor, although he has had experience with the Spell Damage and Artefact Accidents as a nurse and Healer-in-training. He chose the floor specifically because he felt it suited his skills at Potions best.

Summary

Arcturus in many ways is skilled, intelligent and excels in certain areas of his life, but where he doesn't he falls - hard. Trying to mitigate the damage from these falls are a hard struggle he has to face, especially because he's spent years detaching himself from what possible things people could take advantage of him for since he feels that he cannot deal or handle with them. He is hard on himself and considers himself nothing; almost ordinary in a society full of eccentrics like he is and nothing special. All he seeks is to help others, even at the cost of his own life if needs be,  but his lack of social skills, anxiety and many issues in his own past that he either can't or won't drop have become the biggest obstacles he has to face, with himself being his worst enemy.

Myers-Briggs Personality Type
Logistician (ISTJ)

The Logistician personality type is thought to be the most abundant, making up around 13% of the population. Their defining characteristics of integrity, practical logic and tireless dedication to duty make Logisticians a vital core to many families, as well as organizations that uphold traditions, rules and standards, such as law offices, regulatory bodies and military. People with the Logistician personality type enjoy taking responsibility for their actions, and take pride in the work they do – when working towards a goal, Logisticians hold back none of their time and energy completing each relevant task with accuracy and patience

Logisticians don’t make many assumptions, preferring instead to analyze their surroundings, check their facts and arrive at practical courses of action. Logistician personalities are no-nonsense, and when they’ve made a decision, they will relay the facts necessary to achieve their goal, expecting others to grasp the situation immediately and take action. Logisticians have little tolerance for indecisiveness, but lose patience even more quickly if their chosen course is challenged with impractical theories, especially if they ignore key details – if challenges becomes time-consuming debates, Logisticians can become noticeably angry as deadlines tick nearer.

When Logisticians say they are going to get something done, they do it, meeting their obligations no matter the personal cost, and they are baffled by people who don’t hold their own word in the same respect. Combining laziness and dishonesty is the quickest way to get on Logisticians’ bad side. Consequently, people with the Logistician personality type often prefer to work alone, or at least have their authority clearly established by hierarchy, where they can set and achieve their goals without debate or worry over other’s reliability.

Logisticians have sharp, fact-based minds, and prefer autonomy and self-sufficiency to reliance on someone or something. Dependency on others is often seen by Logisticians as a weakness, and their passion for duty, dependability and impeccable personal integrity forbid falling into such a trap.

This sense of personal integrity is core to Logisticians, and goes beyond their own minds – Logistician personalities adhere to established rules and guidelines regardless of cost, reporting their own mistakes and telling the truth even when the consequences for doing so could be disastrous. To Logisticians, honesty is far more important than emotional considerations, and their blunt approach leaves others with the false impression that Logisticians are cold, or even robotic. People with this type may struggle to express emotion or affection outwardly, but the suggestion that they don’t feel, or worse have no personality at all, is deeply hurtful.

Logisticians’ dedication is an excellent quality, allowing them to accomplish much, but it is also a core weakness that less scrupulous individuals take advantage of. Logisticians seek stability and security, considering it their duty to maintain a smooth operation, and they may find that their coworkers and significant others shift their responsibilities onto them, knowing that they will always take up the slack. Logisticians tend to keep their opinions to themselves and let the facts do the talking, but it can be a long time before observable evidence tells the whole story.

Logisticians need to remember to take care of themselves – their stubborn dedication to stability and efficiency can compromise those goals in the long term as others lean ever-harder on them, creating an emotional strain that can go unexpressed for years, only finally coming out after it’s too late to fix. If they can find coworkers and spouses who genuinely appreciate and complement their qualities, who enjoy the brightness, clarity and dependability that they offer, Logisticians will find that their stabilizing role is a tremendously satisfying one, knowing that they are part of a system that works.

St M's Work Schedule
a guide to catching the elusive badger

6/7 am - 11 am
Ward rounds, short-term patients, then long-term patients. Shadowing takes place during this time. Out on the floor, do not go to office.

11.30 am - 12 pm
Updating, organising and archiving records, replenishing supplies (stationery, bloodwork case, basic potions) carried on hand. Can be found in his office.

12 pm - 1 pm
Lunch. Either eats in his office or in the tearoom on the fifth floor. If he's in his office, the door is locked because he's eating and working at the same time.

1 pm - 4.30/5 pm
Appointments, consultations. In office.

5 pm - 6 pm
EITHER
Leaves, will cook and eat dinner at home.
OR
Eats in office. Would still be doing work if that's the case. Do not interrupt.

6.30 - 9 pm
EVENING SHIFT
Days vary on when he takes this shift. Usually is around on the floor checking patients alongside healers-in-training or mediwizards/witches.

9 pm - 12 am
NIGHT SHIFT
Takes this shift more often than he does evening shift. Checks on patients quickly, then either retreats to office to update on work and keep an eye on the wards, or does research. Depends on how many healers are available on the floor.

12 am - 4/5 am
GRAVEYARD SHIFT
Not taken as often as night shift, but more often than evening shift. Usually spends his time on work before going to experiment with potions. Will appear on the floor while brewing (for potions that take up to an hour or more; he stays put if the potion takes less time).

Notes

  • Arcturus will take AT LEAST ONE of the above shifts listed every day.
  • If he takes more than one shift, the shifts are consecutive, ie he will take evening and night shift, or night shift and graveyard shift, but never evening and graveyard.
  • If he takes the graveyard shift, the next day he will come in the afternoon rather than the morning, and take evening and/or night shift only to reset his sleep.
  • He is permanently on call from October 2010 to October 2011. Self-imposed.
  • Because he is permanently on call, he isn't obliged to do the full three shifts, though he does during emergencies and if they really need him.
  • Tea with a few drops of Awakening Potion keep him going.
  • His off-days are usually Saturday-Sunday, but that changes often and thus he doesn't hold it as fixed.
