[Sept 22] Louder than Sirens [Landis]

on May 29, 2012, 02:57:25 AM

Naomi would hope, that among all the ruckus resulting from Sandusky's ridiculous classroom tyranny of confiscating wands for looking at the wrong person, that any resulting misconduct would go generally unnoticed. It worked for a while: Naomi's friends didn't care or bring attention to the fact that she only seemed to appear in class on test days and that her homework somehow magically appeared in the stack of papers to be handed back despite her absence in the class, but her show of complete and utter lack of respect for Sandusky led to a string of rumors that evolved from the wand nonsense to "Did you notice Foley hasn't been to class lately?" Gryffindors seemed to get away with such a thing with much more ease, but the Slytherin rumor mill was brutal...

Either something became contagious and mutated to something awful or it made it's way to Landis Morgan's doorstep.

Which was wear Naomi was standing at that moment, casually wondering if she was going to walk out of that office with anything less than a monstrous curse stalking her the next week. At least that's how her parents did it--and while Morgan had never resorted to something like that (or she hadn't seen him do it yet), she had a strange nagging feeling he would, given the chance.

She was also a little miffed he conveniently scheduled this right before dinner time. Naomi was hungry and tired, it was one of those long days where she didn't have a lot of free time slots open and one of the days she skipped a few meals to get some extra work done; so she looked forward to dinner. Oh well.

Naomi ended her mental soap box and opened the office door. Though she entered standing tall and with near-perfect posture as always, her lips were pursed, pushing away an awkward smile as she hugged one shoulder to her ear and her green eyes steadily met his. They both knew why she was there, she didn't need to say anything more, and Naomi still wasn't ashamed of the course of action she took. No need to muck around the topic. No need to pretend to be innocent. No wasting time.

Down to business.

Indeed, by the time Naomi had opened his door, Landis had already decided his plan of action. Foley was one of the students to whom Landis did not overly object. She was intelligent, perceptive, probably enigmatic to the point of opacity where her fellow fourth-years were concerned. She gave the impression of knowing far more than she should and as such might make a good prefect one day, because if there was one trait authority benefitted from it was the ability to appear as though you could see into people's heads (and what you saw didn't impress you very much). However, she was also stubborn and prideful, and while Landis had little issue with either in general terms there were days in his life when he felt more like a herder of particularly obstinate cats. Merlin, what a hassle.

Foley came in and just looked at him, so there was a good chance she knew what she was here for. The rueful little shrug of her shoulder spoke volumes. She would have known it was only a matter of time before he found out, from other students or Sandusky.

"Ms. Foley." Landis did not believe in wasting time any more than she. "I do not care if you sit in the back of the classroom jabbing quills into your ears. But you have another year before you can choose which classes to drop and which to keep, and Sandusky's requires your actual body in a seat."

Naomi tilted her head to the side, he lips turning down at one edge as she let her green gaze steadily meet her Head of House's, "And I require a wand to get through school," she turned a palm outwards as she let her hand fall against her hands, "But from him taking Veronica's and Kelvin's wands for so much as sneezing how are any of us suppose to deal wit' 'dat?" The girls dark brows were furrowed and frustrated, as if she had gotten lost in a labyrinth caverns.

She crossed her hands in front of her, before letting them fall again, "I am not taking the class to cater to a professor who t'inks his flight of fancies have more weight 'dan 'a ruling from th' Wizengamot."

Taking a wand away for a few days of misusing it was one thing, taking a wand away for a few days for touching it in a class you needed it in was another thing entirely--it was an abuse of authority that Naomi had utterly no respect for, and it was a subject that hit a soft spot for many people who's families were still scarred from the past. Naomi's own ancestry was founded on such conflict, but there were also families in Europe with more recent and scarred histories--one's she couldn't completely rleate to but one's she understood--magic was just too precious to a witch or wizard to be taken away for frivolous reasons.

So, even though she wasn't as close to Kelvin as Connor was, and even though Veronica didn't care much rigt now, Kelvin and Veronica were her friends, and two of the more responsible and dependable people in her year. No one would benefit if their wands were taken away for the reasons Sandusky took them away.

Landis nodded once in decisive acknowledgment of her complaint. "You are not the only one who found his actions both excessive and unwise." A faint smirk appeared on his lips - imagine, a long-time member of the school board making such an inappropriate mistake. It took a very special breed of ignorance not to foresee the reaction of confiscating wands for so little reason, even more so if Sandusky had really intended to keep them for days. The wizarding world was so touchy about that sort of thing.

Unfortunately Landis had not had the pleasure of speaking to Leopold himself, and so did not know the other man's reasoning. Ignan had spoken to him instead. How Landis wished to have been a fly upon that wall.

"The matter has been addressed, and he encouraged to think longer on what constitutes proper grounds for punishment. Sandusky is within his rights as a professor to take your wand again, but only so long as there is legitimate reason." Landis knew as well as anyone that authority was a false concept, one that worked only if other people believed in it. Sandusky had undermined his own rather neatly with this mistake, and it would take a while for him to regain the respect of the students and staff. Some, like Foley, would probably never grant it to him, and the professor had ruined any chance with Landis the day he'd tried to tell Landis how to run his House. However, they two were cynical, and judged a man not by his pet monkey but by his competence. It was the Slytherin way.

The other Houses would be kinder in the face of his age and jolly good nature. Of that, Landis was certain.

"Do not give him a legitimate reason. You are, however, allowed to sneeze."

Naomi couldn't help but feel a prickle of satisfaction at Morgan's comment on the situation, and faint amusement on the topic. Of course, he got to the point as straightaway and quick as usual."Yeah, all right," Naomi acknowledged that someone had a word with Sandusky--though Mr. Morgan was as vague on the topic as he was with everything else. Hopefully, it was Storm--or Mr. Morgan himself, but considering how Defense went, Naomi guessed it must have been the former.

After the permission to sneeze, part of Naomi truly wished she could sneeze on cue. Instead, the girl twisted her lips together in an attempt to keeps the corners of her mouth from prickling into a smile. Though, this wasn't an evening occlumency lesson with Bai Li Yang, so Naomi didn't truly make as much as an effort as she could to hide what faint amusement there was. But the witch was still sour about the situation.

"And for Sandusky..." she let any hint of a smile fall from her twisted lips as her voice dully dragged, "What is a legitimate reason? He is sort of..." Naomi shrugged and rolled her shoulders back uncomfortably as she looked her Head of House in the eyes, "volatile, wit' social conduct." Or maybe he was just old.

"Well, he is still your professor," Landis allowed. "Whatever he decides, you'll just have to be the bigger person about it. At least until after class, when you can come to me or another staff member with your complaints. If they're legitimate, I'll do what I can. But sometimes professors are just... eccentric. Sandusky's personality is not mine to alter." At least, not without a great deal of effort and some very illegal spells. Landis needed a better reason to court Azkaban than student complaints. Saying "at least he's not a Deatheater" or "at least he's not Slughorn" probably wouldn't make Foley feel any better, and just made Landis feel old.

"Do what you need to to get through the class. The legitimate reasons for you to come to me involve his or any other's infringement on your rights as a witch, such as the unreasonable taking of a wand, the purposeful casting of spells which put you in danger, or coercing you to perform any spells with which you are uncomfortable." Even those were tenuous boundries. Hogwarts had never been particularly concerned with student safety. "They do not include being talked down to or otherwise patronized. You'll have to put up with that; it's one of the few benefits available to the staff. Likewise, if you are not performing a spell specifically related to his lesson, I would advise you keep your wand stowed away."

At the word 'eccentric' Naomi lowered her gaze into contemplation as she ran through the current list of professors at the school who could be categorized under 'eccentric': Cosmos had their desks violently possessed for an entire lesson, Hagrid let them run wild with creatures, Trishna was having an affair with muggle academics, Kesali was all flare and daggers (at least it seemed so), rumors dictated the school counselor was far too enthusiastic for her own good, and then t here was Storm--who needed no evidence to back up his eccentric behavior. Yes, Hogwarts was full of crazy people--maybe it was some professor's complete disregard for safety that made her like them over others.

Finally she looked up at Morgan as she exhaled a deep sigh and surrendered a small smile to the librarian, "At Hogwarts--eccentric is an understatement."

"I'll be sure and be ridiculously cautious in his class," she said with a more serious tone laced into her voice, but then it gave a more lighthearted quirk as she added, "I'll only twirl sharp writing utensils, from now on." After another moment of thought Naomi realized that her joke might've been funnier if she didn't actually know how to be as volatile with a sharp utensil as she was with a wand. And so she quickly decided to change subjects before Mr. Morgan made up his mind on whether he thought the comment was appropriate or not.

"So is 'dat all I need to keep in mind?" Naomi arched a brow as she cast the library a curious expression, wondering if he just wanted to lecture her this whole time or if there was some sort of catch.

"At Hogwarts--eccentric is an understatement."

Landis smiled back. "Indeed."

Caution, sharp writing incidents, and - yes - punishment. Skipping a class for so long was very worthy of punishment, even if Landis understood Naomi's reasoning. Contrary to most of the school's dark mutterings on the matter, Landis did not particularly enjoy giving punishments to students - only the ones who were not his own. With the Slytherins he was more lax, much more likely to assign detention than take off points. Detentions were a hassle though too because he either had to find a staff chaperon or do it himself.

Nevertheless, something had to be done. Landis had thought of it earlier, while contemplating the appropriate punishment. It seemed to wrap everything up rather nicely, and it would ensure that Naomi was cautious about skipping again and made things easier on Sandusky, who was, after all, the professor whom she'd slighted. Landis might not personally care much for the man, as his comments to Foley had made clear, but there was such a thing as professional courtesy.

"You are an intelligent student, yes?" He did not wait for an answer, which was probably for the best; when Landis Morgan asked something in that tone, any student would think immediately of a trap. "You will be putting your knowledge to good use. You will make your services available to those whom Sandusky determines need tutoring for no less than six sessions, one for each class that you skipped." Naomi was smart enough to do well at this, and it would test her Transfigurations knowledge in teaching it to others. Landis assumed she would be taking on younger years, but it honestly didn't matter much to him who she taught.

Despite the smile Morgan gave her, Naomi silently waited for him to continue or draw the meeting to a close. When he asked her if she was smart she simply continued her silence, not even bothering to give the man an answer--from her lessons with Bai Li patience became a simple concept that was simple to carry out in practice.

When Landis Morgan explained that she would be teaching younger years Naomi pursed her lips to the side and craned her dark brow into an arch. Naomi knew how to do plenty of things, but teaching seemed to be an exercise in patience and tolerance, skills she could easily exercise with herself, but, with others, it was very short-lived. Because of those tendencies, Naomi had a feeling that the "six sessions" wouldn't work out too well, but she wasn't going to complain, six sessions wasn't all that bad and it would probably only change the older wizard's mind on the punishment if she did complain.

"Sure," Naomi's deadpan lilt rolled out, she didn't sound outraged but didn't make it a point to sound enthusiastic either. She picked up her bag and pulled herself upright from her seat, "'Am I excused?"

Foley looked precisely as enthusiastic about this punishment as could be expected.

"'Am I excused?"

"Off with you," Landis agreed, leaving the when, where, and who to Sandusky. He disregarded the impertinence of the question itself; if he got offended every time one of his Slytherins got snarky with him, he would - well, he wouldn't be very well suited to this position at all. The proper, professorly, dungeon-dwelling thing to do would be to warn her one final time about attending her classes, but in all honestly Foley was not one of the students who needed things drilled into their heads before it took. Once should be adequate.
