Physical Description

That’s a bit of a tricky question.

In what could be called his most “natural” appearance, Ted Lupin much resembles his father. He is thin and drawn from childhood growth spurts, with a pale face and mousy brown hair. During the summer he develops freckles, and during the winter he bundles up in so many layers that he seems twice his actual size. At this point, he’s still rather tiny, but he also hasn’t hit puberty yet, so his exact body type is still to be seen.

However, all of that is complicated by his natural talent as a Morphmagi. From the day he was born, his hair color has constantly changed, and as he gets older his ability to change other parts of his body – facial features, body type, etc. – grows gradually more extensive. At this point, he’s got control over most aspects of his face and is working outward from there, though things to get “stuck” on occasion, which can be uncomfortable.

Still, he likes to put this control over his appearance to good use. His preferred hair color is turquoise, with dust purple being the second-most common, followed by bright red and gold in bouts of school spirit. He doesn’t need glasses, but he carries around a pair for fashion and enemy-taunting purposes. His face tends to go heart-shaped when he’s in a good mood, and he sometimes changes his eye color when he blinks just to see if anyone notices.

Also, after years of wheedling favors and presents out of a dozen extended relatives, he’s gotten very good at subtly changing his appearance to get in a psychological dig. This can result in him coming out of a long conversation with a teacher looking rather creepily like their children, up to and including daughters. Hilarity no doubt ensues.

Personality Description

Ted Lupin a wound-up mess of conflicts and contradictions in the best possible way. He loves to be the center of attention but dislikes being recognized because of his famous family. He’s got the heart of a showman and the spirit of a prankster, but prefers to stay in the background, waiting for his cue and establishing plausible deniability. And while he is friendly, he’s also got some nervous ticks that put other people on edge, most of which involve manipulating his physical appearance.

The one thing that he certainly is not is lonely. He actually gets a bit offended when people assume that. As far as he’s concerned, he’s got a great family. Between his Gran, his godfather, and a small army of honorary aunts, uncles, and cousins, he’s never wanted for companionship or love.

That said, he is exceedingly aware of his family’s heroic status, and doesn’t like it much. Oh sure, he’s proud to be part of such a grand legacy, but he doesn’t want to be seen as just the result of that legacy. He wants to be loved and acknowledged for his own talents and dreams of a successful career doing anything besides catching Dark Wizards. Given that he’s eleven, the exact dream career in question changes with the tide, but favorites so far include a rock star, an artist, or a wizarding filmmaker.

Unfortunately, there are times when he’s not entirely confident in his abilities. He’s cowed by the reputation of those around him and reacts negatively to people who expect great things from “Harry Potter’s godson,” or “the child of Remus Lupin.” This juxtaposition between wanting to do great things and not wanting his great things attributed to his heritage can give him a bit of neurosis, especially when the full moon draws near. Nightmares conjured by stress are not uncommon.

Though not ‘clever’ the way that Ravenclaws are, Ted thinks quite quickly, especially when put on the spot, and can be expected to react physically to pretty much anything thrown at him. In addition to being very creative, he’s got a sharp tongue that gets him in trouble some times, and a sharp mind that gets him out of it nearly as often.

Oddly, he can be both lazy when it comes to schoolwork and easily stressed by the status of his grades. Practical demonstrations and exercises are the best ways to keep him engaged, while essays have to be dragged from him one letter at a time.

Naturally enough, given his morphmagi abilities, he’s good at impressions. One of his favorite ways to get a rise out of people who bother him is to mimic their appearance and then twist it into something insulting. Imitating annoying teachers gets quite a bit of a laugh in the common room. However, with this ability so prominent since birth, he sometimes worries that he’ll forget his real face. The symbolism of this often appears in his stress dreams.

Despite being the son of a werewolf, he is not one himself. However, he does exhibit oddly werewolf-esque mood swings, growing more anxious as the moon grows full and relaxing as it wanes. This leads to many a sleepless full-moon night, which gets him into trouble.

Of note: he dislikes it when people his own age or younger call him “Teddy,” a nickname that he finds endearing but childish. Older students and cute girls can get away with it though, as can friends of the family.

History

Ted Remus Lupin (whose name might actually be Theodore, but no one ever calls him that) was born to Remus Lupin and Nyphadora Tonks during the height of Voldemort’s reign of terror in the Second Wizarding War. A few short months after his birth, his parents answered the call to join the Battle of Hogwarts and never returned, leaving Teddy an orphan with his maternal grandmother, Andromeda, as his only living family.

In spite of this, young Lupin wanted for nothing – his godfather, Harry Potter, saw to that, alongside the extended family of Weasleys, Lovegoods, and Longbottoms that came with him. Essentially, Ted became the eldest of a new generation of both the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore’s Army, a generation that would never know the evil of the Dark Lord, for whom an entire world of magical possibilities await.

He lives with his grandmother in a small estate outside of Ottery St. Catchpole, Devon, within a pleasant afternoon broom’s ride of his godfather and most of the extended family. His favorite playmate, when they could cover the distance between Devon and Cornwall, is Victoire Weasley, the closest Weasley-Potter child to his own age. Now that’s started Hogwarts, he’s been writing regular letters to keep her company while he’s away.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?:
He’s too lazy for Hufflepuff. That’s what he says anyway. To be fair, he’s also brave, but it’s raw, undefined, and reckless sort of bravery that leads to unwise pranks and reckless midnight raids. So, par for the course as far as Gryffindor first-years go. The Hat may have also felt that placing him in Gryffindor, among so many vibrant personalities, would provide him with a bit of crutch during the frequent bouts of under-confidence.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Ted Lupin is the son of heroes who would rather be known for anything but. He is creative, expressive, active, and not very good at keeping himself out of trouble. He loves his family but hates to be defined by them, and is desperately seeking a purpose in life that will let him be something other than “the child they left behind.”

Special Ability Request

Reply #1 on April 05, 2012, 03:51:46 PM

Character Name: Ted Remus Lupin
Age: Eleven
Please provide a link to their Application: (you guys have it right now)
Do any of your other Characters have Special Abilities?: Yes
If Yes, then Please provide their name and a link to their bio: Alvis Norling, Legilimens - http://www.absitomen.com/index.php?topic=8366.0

Special Ability: Metamorphmagi
What level is this ability at?: Intermediate
At what age did your character gain this ability?: Birth
How did they learn or hone this ability?: Ted was born with the ability. His hair began changing before he was even a day old. Since then, he's honed it by putting his natural instincts to use, particularly in adjusting his facial features.

He's got pretty good control over the face at this point and is gradually working his way out to the rest of the body. He's cautious about it though, because things get stuck sometimes, and that can be really uncomfortable.
Describe how the Special Ability influences their life.  What do they use it for?: He uses it for a lot of things - style, taunting people, coaxing people into doing what he wants. The first is most common, changing his hair color and style at a whim. He's gotten very good at doing impressions, as well.

For the most part, it's hard to tell how it 'influences' his life, since it's just a part of who he is. Some can sing, some can fly, Teddy can change his face around. It's a fact of his life. However, he does sometimes worry having it so ubiquitous will result in him losing sight of his real face - a fear that manifests in his worst nightmares.
Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special Ability: For the most part, transformations are instantaneous. Ted concentrates on what he wants to change and, with a bit of a push, it changes. How much concentration depends on the extent of the transformation - he can change his eye color with a blink and his hair color with a bit of thought, but changing the shape of his face or rearranging bones requires more time. Interrupting him mid-transformation can become a disaster.

There is no effect on others, unless you count the psychological effects he purposefully aims for when he's trying to get his way.
