Physical Description
Cain is, well, lanky. Not especially athletic, he lacks the bulk of many of his peers, and he isn't the biggest fan of team sports. Instead, his wiry frame lends itself better to running, which Cain enjoys and is surprisingly good at. Neither tall nor short, Cain isn't especially noticeable in a crowd, and his wiry build means that he doesn't look intimidating.
Although he already had his ears for that.
Regrettably, they are his most outstanding feature, large and very sticky- out-y, his short hair doing nothing to help. His cheekbones go some of the way to improving his appearance, and generally, he isn't bad looking- certainly not ugly, but not handsome either. A pale complexion and dark hair contrast strongly, lending to his appearance of being ever- so- slightly geeky. His often messy hair doesn't contradict that either, and makes him look a little like he's just rolled out of bed.
Personality Description
Cain is one of the politest people you will ever meet. Quiet and softly spoken, he rarely speaks of his own accord and prefers to watch rather than interact. More comfortable with animals than people, while he isn't socially inept, Cain often feels awkward around others and prefers the simplicity of animals to the duplicity of humankind.
Self- sacrificing to the point of being a pushover, Cain does have a breaking point. He has an acute sense of justice, and will stand up for anyone who he perceives as being victimised. Although this tendency to action before thought can lead to problems, most see it as an endearing feature, and his fearlessness when defending the weak surprises those who consider him a coward because of his usual reluctance to enter confrontation.
Apart from his sense of justice, however, Cain's consistent politeness can be off-putting. He treats almost everyone in the same deferentially kind manner, and it's hard to tell if he actually likes someone, or if he's merely humouring them- or even mocking them, and, with a straight face as good as his, you'd be hard pressed to tell.
One thing in which he is genuinely sincere, however, is his desire to become a healer. Much as Cain loves animals, he would rather heal people and his constant mothering of his younger sisters has only served to further ingrain the idea into his head. This is reflected in his hard work in these subjects, as though Cain does work hard in every subject, it is in subjects related to his chosen profession that he tries the hardest.
This is partly related to his belief that nothing he ever does is any good. His lack of belief in his own self worth, a remainder from his childhood, means that he always feels the drive to go just a little further in trying to achieve his goals, and he is always surprised when people admire his work.
History
In 1987 a young French witch called Marianne moved to the USA to work for the French Embassy there. Although she enjoyed her new life, in a foreign country, miles from her family and friends, and speaking a strange language, she couldn't help but sometimes feel completely isolated. When these bouts of loneliness attacked, she would go to the local wizarding bar, and it was there that she met Hugo Abernathy.
Hugo was witty and charming, and Marianne found herself returning to the bar time and time again to see him. The two of them grew steadily closer, and when Hugo proposed to her two years after they first met, Marianne was delighted to accept.
Although both came from wizarding families, neither was rich, but as they both had secure jobs, they were able to afford a small house- more of a cottage, in fact- in Carolina. They continued to have a happy married life, and when Marianne told Hugo that she was pregnant, it seemed that their lives were complete.
When the baby boy was born, Marianne took temporary leave from her job to look after him, while Hugo continued to support his small family. But although Marianne returned to work, when she realised that she was pregnant again, the couple began to worry. With a child to support and a mortgage to pay, Marianne needed to work if they were to be able to continue independently.
The worry turned to desperation as Hugo was fired just two months before the expected arrival of the new baby- or rather, babies, because Marianne was expecting twins. The couple quickly began to fall about, and Cain, just five years old, could do nothing but watch as his parents' relationship turned from loving to resentful. Soon after the twin girls were born, Cain's mother finally moved out, taking the three children with her and moving to New York.
But the divorce which followed was long and complicated, and the indecisive custody agreement meant that the three children were ferried across America from one parent to the other. Often staying with Hugo's austere parents, Cain quickly learnt the finer points of good behaviour, and being shipped between his two parents he was sure that neither wanted him.
His twin sisters travelled with him, and as the three grew older he found himself more and more often trying to look after his energetic siblings in the face of a dispassionate Father and preoccupied mother. Instead, the three began to stay more and more often at his grandparents' house, which offered continuity at the cost of having a very rigid upbringing.
When he reached Salem, he quickly adapted to the rhythm of school life, his gentle politeness gaining him many friends. Always driven to do well in class, Cain forced himself to excel in all his classes, his dedication impressing many of his teachers. But when he was 16, and his younger sisters also joined, his Mother announced that she was leaving for France, to be with her family again.
His disapproving Grandparents said nothing, as did Hugo, and Cain watched his Mother leave without comment, not bothering to point out that he and his younger sisters counted as family as well.

Why Was The Student Allowed/Permitted To Attend The Tournament?
Cain is a serious and dedicated student, with a gentle temperament, who is hard working and does well in school, especially in subjects related to his life goal of becoming a healer.
Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Cain is quiet and easy going, and although not the life and soul of the party, he's the kind who makes friends for life. Polite and self- sacrificing, Cain's relaxed attitude can make him seem like a pushover, but the instant he perceives someone as victimising someone else, he'll spring into action, wanted or not. Although not a rigid follower of the rules, Cain is nevertheless a well behaved student, and with the amount of effort he puts into classes, he's also quite a successful one.
