"So, do we have everything?" Obderedria asked.
"I have got the fish," said
Heliotrope.
Obderedria was beginning to wonder just how she had found herself in these circumstances.
Perhaps it was the open hours the second years had after Thursday Herbology, an invitation to whatever activity at your heart's whimsy until dinner. Having come back to school Obderedria found her skills in magic to be pretty much the same since last year. Decent in Charms, struggling in Transfiguration and very apprehensive in Defense. Although she should be paying more attention in Defense though she couldn't always remember why. As for Heliotrope, Obderedria suspected she hadn't advanced much either. No doubt she still transfigured jelly beans into tadpoles and mice into mussel shaped snuffboxes.
Perhaps it was browsing the library where Obderedria happened across a book entitled
Familiar Fancies: Epicurean Eats for the Particular Pet. She had checked it out, finding it comprehensive about the diets of common magical pets and recipes for animal cuisine. Pet food from Diagon Alley was expensive and Obderedria wanted her kitten Puddin' to have nicer things to eat than having to catch mice. And Kneazles were of the feline family, according to the book, so why should the suggested Kneazle diet be any different for a regular cat?
Perhaps it was knowing that her roommate could live underwater and had grown up catching fish so if you asked nicely Heliotrope would get some for you. Obderedria was somewhat frightened on how nonplussed Heliotrope set about to the task. Could you ask her to do
anything and she would do it?
"What is this?" Heliotrope asked of the contraption sitting between them on a table in the Hufflepuff common room, lit by a ray of light from one of the enchanted windows near the ceiling.
[1]"It's a blender," Obderedria said.
Perhaps it was finding out that when mum had been gifted a new blender, and told Obderedria to store the old one until they could figure out what to do with it -- without realizing it, Obderedria had left it by her school things and forgotten about it when mum called her for another chore. Then, when unpacking at school, finding out that your spare old blender was in the bottom of your trunk.
Slowly the opportunities aligned into the project at hand: making cat food.
"What does a blender do?" Heliotrope asked.
"It's a machine that chops up food very quickly," Obderedria explained, "pulverizing it into mush or liquid. I like making smoothies with it at home. Although we can't really do that here because there's no plug in outlets behind the potted plants here -- well, I mean we could try with magic instead of electricity. Would you hold the lid on, Helio?"
The half-Selkie kept the rubber square lid down on the rectangular blender with a webbed hand. The cover was rated to stay put no matter how torrid the foodstuffs inside minced but Obderedria had been taught to always keep the lid held down just in case. Inside the blender was a sizable fish and a few suggested herbs for vitamins.
Obderedria scrunched up her face in concentration. She'd found a spell that could substitute the need for electricity, since the blender was really a motor attached to a blade. It was beyond her level though and she was always particular about learning new spells. But she had to learn it if she wanted her kitten to be healthy and Helio was staring at her and the blender in that blank way she always did. It wasn't an expectant expression but one that left you feeling rather expectant.
She performed the spell. "
Inanimatus Locomotor!"
