[Sept 4th - ?] The Art of Letters [Abby]

The letter arrives, written in perfectly even and elaborate writing. It sleeps in a fine, neatly-sealed enveloped that is dark red in colour-- almost but not quite the shade of a Howler. Its recipient's name is scribbled in gold ink; its contents are of plain parchment. A photograph is enclosed.

Hello Abby,

How do you do? I hope that everything is well and that you enjoyed the remainder of your summer vacation. My academic term at Hogwarts has hardly begun and I am already pining for warmer weather. It must be much warmer in London. And certainly much warmer in Egypt! I think that some day I may return there.

I never asked you before, what it is you do during the school term. Are you bored at all? I wish I could say the same for us. Everyone is terribly excited over the tournament (the amount of foreigners, you'd be thrilled), not to mention Professor Trishna has apparently adopted a more equine lifestyle. I helped myself to a copy of the picture my housemate took of him, and thought that you would like it-- for decor.

Lessons are beginning so I had better go now. Do keep in touch and please take care of yourself, Abby!

Best regards,

Raine Almasy

An owl returns that evening, carrying an envelope covered in doodles, where you can just make out the recipient's name in round, bubbly handwriting. The parchment inside is red in color and fades to purple. The ink slowly changes color as well.

Raine!!

I already miss you! I definitely thought my mother was sending a howler! I was so glad to get your owl! If he looks full it's because I fed him lots of treats. He was very patient as I ran around the house trying to find colourful paper and ribbon, and my favorite quill. I drew you a picture! It's what my ceiling looks like with the scarves. That is what happens when I get bored.

If you return to Egypt, take me with you! We'll get lost in markets and run away from merchants and talk about how cute the surfer boys are again.

I have exciting news! But wait. I have to lead up to it properly. What do I do during the school year? Besides mope? Kidding! Well, usually I get private tutoring for a bunch of boring stuff, like history, which honestly, how many times can you learn about the goblin-wizard tension before you want to throw a book at Gringotts. But potions and herbology isn't bad. Plus I usually pick up some kind of hobby, like every few months. Last year it was the art of gnome throwing. I grew arm muscles like a Quidditch player! Hurr! (that is my super strength sound). All gone now, and I've got skinny arms again.

What happened to poor Professor Tappy! He looks adorable and I wish I could give him a hug! SO CUTE. But he's not going to stay like that, right? It's a joke? I wonder if I can see him. I wonder why my dear sister Aileen has not said anything! Oh that figures. I'm going to write him a sympathy note just to spite her.

I went horseback riding with Sasha early in August and conquered my fear of giant creatures with hooves! Be proud! I've enclosed a photo of me looking hilarious with my little riding cap. My grin is the grin of fear and joy!

Are you entering the tournament? I bet you'd kick the bums of anyone there! Really though. You seem like the type that would be good at dueling, since you are good with fencing. I tried fencing once and let's just say it was a very short-lived hobby. I wasn't as bad at it as I was at volleeball in Egypt though.

Oh yeah my news! I got an internship at the MA (Muggle Affairs) office at the Ministry! Dreogan Eleor is really, really nice. He laughs at my jokes and he has a kitten in the office. Can you believe it? So that's what I'll be doing this term. It also means I can delay those marriage plans that my parents have for me (they are just THRILLED, ha, not), so when I turn seventeen in October I'll still be Abby Reid, Adventurer in tombs that shall not be opened.

Owl me back soonish! Tell me everything! ^.^

~Abby!

The letter arrives in similar fashion as before-- orderly and immaculately sealed. It is accompanied by a thick, rolled up parchment with a red/gold striped ribbon.

Dear Abby,

Your last letter might have an induced a seizure in someone less accustomed! I appreciated it, however. We are eternally lacking in colour up here, especially with the sun coming to set as early as it does nowadays. You must be an oasis of our grey weather.

I have to admit, I don't envy the sound of your school year. That internship must have come as a relief-- are you learning a lot about muggles? Mama tells me that some wizards don't really understand them but I don't think they are very difficult to handle. You will probably know more about such things than I will, by the end of the term!

From what I understand, Professor Tappy's condition is temporary (and unintentional). We should have full possession of our human professor, eventually. I'm sure he'd appreciate a sympathy note. We all had such a good laugh at his expense but I'm sure he's fine. Better a horse than anything worse, surely? Imagine being turned into a snail! Nobody would take you seriously. And someone from Beauxbatons might get it into their heads to eat you!

You look very charming in that picture! I didn't know that you were acquainted with Schlagenweit-- isn't he the biggest bookworm you've ever met? I firmly believe that he will study himself into an early grave someday. Or perhaps a rather heavy book will fall on him.

I have entered the Tournament but Merlin knows who will be selected! Keep your fingers crossed for me! Oh, and I'm extremely glad to hear that you won't be married off quite yet. Seventeen and single? I approve. My dorm mate is calling me away just now but I hope to hear from you soon!

P.S. Speaking of felines, I have a cat now. His name is Maurice and I've drawn you a sketch of him. He's terribly friendly with strangers and I imagine that the two of you would like each other very much.

Take care,

Raine Almasy

An owl returns carrying an envelope with a goblet of fire doodle on the flap and Raine's name coming out of it.

Raine!

You entered the tournament!! Wow! I'm really excited for you!

Who else submitted their names, do you know? I want to be ready to boo them from the bleachers - the foreign students anyway. Unless they're cute and also male. What will I do if you get picked and a cute foreign boy with a French accent gets picked! It will be a test of our friendship, yup. Or more likely Aileen will make it simple for me and glare at me whenever I start cheering for other schools.

I wouldn't actually do that to you, Raine. WHEN you get picked you will be INUNDATED with colourful banners and posters and pins! Inundated I say!

A cat! You got a cat (I'm just going to repeat everything you say now)! I love the sketch you did! He looks adorable. I'm more of a crup person myself, but I just know that Maurice would be snuggly and friendly and not at all snooty! You're very lucky, Raine. I can't wait to meet him!

Poor Professor Trishna. I hope he gets better and more human-like soon. No wonder he hasn't been replying to my texts! His messages would come out like: funnysymbol-number-number-randomletter-HOOFSMASH. Exactly like that. Oh and he's at Hogwarts full time. I always forget about that.

How are classes with the foreign kids? I hear there are new clubs popping up, and a bunch of new professors. Aileen says the new Head of Hufflepuff might actually get Fig to do the class stuff he's supposed to be doing. I'm probably not supposed to gossip about what the professors say but oh well!

I hope Sasha hasn't fallen into a book somewhere, like the really old ones in the library. We'd never be able to find him. Can you poke him for me if he starts to obsess over things like which quill he has in his backpack, and if he starts talking about "But I MUST take Communing with the Giant Squid! Because I can!"

You and I know he doesn't! He's so silly sometimes. There's much more to him than books and studying though. You just have to peel back the Schlawkward layers. I say that with affection!

I really like my internship so far! So much better than gnome throwing. I will have to tell you more later because I have to go! You take care too!

The envelope and parchment are both peppered with deep red paw prints that almost obscure parts of the sentences. Black fur is matted into the wax seal.

Abby!

I am so very sorry it took me this long to write back. A great deal of work simply landed on my lap without warning and I have been trying hard to keep from drowning in it. What's more, the announcements for the tournament were made today. You may well be surprised by the Goblet's decision (as I certainly was)!

There was a boy from the Gryffindor house, of course, and then Harper from Hufflepuff. The real surprise was Schlawkward Sasha! I must admit that I am a little disappointed not to have been selected but there are still other challenges to come. For now, I consider it my duty to be supportive of the Hogwarts champions-- even studious little bookworms.

Lessons have been fine. The students from Salem are rather... American. Their frankness is what amuses me most. I have yet to socialize amongst the other schools, however. Perhaps I should. Who knows what shall occur when loyalties intensify? Your cheering will ease such tensions, surely.

Have you made any new friends at the Ministry? I hope you are infuriating their bureaucratic procedures, silly things. Maurice sends his regards in the form of several irritating hisses, demanding my attention. I apologize for his bad behaviour and for the paw prints! He broke my best bottle of red ink.

Before I forget-- Trishna is human once more. You might have heard back from him by now! No more horse jokes. However shall our Astronomy class endure such a tragedy?

Best Wishes,

Raine Almasy

The envelope is covered in paw print doodles, and the point of the envelope flap shows a crup with his paws dangling over the sides.

Raine!

I sent you a new bottle of red ink. It's   how should I put it. Special! You'll see.

You might not want to use it for class. Until or if you  --you'll see!

Holy crap Sasha!! I didn't even know he put his name in! He should have told me! That is so cool though! I'm sorry you didn't get picked this time around, though maybe you don't want to be for the first challenge. Don't tell Sasha I said that! They'll either start off with a bang or leave the super fun, scary stuff for later challenges! I can't decide whether that's good or bad! Sasha must be excited and nervous.

I still can't believe he put his name in!  Actually, that's exactly what I mean - he must have thought "I should sign up because I CAN!" and just like the 'communing with the giant squid' class, here he is, with a bunch of extra stuff on his shoulders. Silly Sasha.

I bet I would like Americans. Are they bolder than the Gryffindors? Because whoa!

I'm so glad Professor Tappy is ok again. Aileen told me when he turned back because she knew I'd be mad if she didn't. Apparently he became human early in the morning, and the first thing he did was scold a bunch of students and almost get his hand chopped off by an enchanted ax. At least, that was what I got out of my sister's telling of it.

Maurice can leave paw prints anytime! It's cute even when he's troublesome! I will take it as a sign of affection even though he hasn't met me yet. Also my crup says hello. I translated her greeting for you, as you can see on the envelope. Ha, I'm so clever.

I like my boss at the Ministry. He's having me do stuff like classes and surveying muggbleborns, squibs, etc about what the M.A.O could do to make things a bit easier. It's fun! I get to meet a lot of people.

Super random: Are you by any chance in any classes with a Durmstrang student called Tyr Brunn? What do you think of him?

My parents are hoping to set me up with him so I'm not really out of hot water yet with the whole marriage thing. I avoided his letters over the summer but I suppose I should send him an owl before my mother flips.

I know you weren't a fan of Xavier at Fig's party so I'll depend on your discerning eye about this one!

Neither the envelope or the parchment has been decorated. It looks rather plain in comparison to her other letters.

Hey there Hogwarts champion!

I’ve been meaning to say that. How are you?

That’s probably a silly question because I saw the Prophet article. It really, really sucks about that crazy bloke! What are they thinking! I’m really sorry Raine. Are you ok? Another silly question.

Can I do anything? I can try to cheer you up long distance! I could doodle for you. Or send you chocolate. Or talk about dumb things.

I’m going to be at the Yule Ball! So I will see you sooner than you expected. Sasha asked me over the Hogsmeade weekend in a very brill way. You’re going right? Who’s your date? Wait, not important. I’m getting off topic. But who’s your date?

I hope you're alright. Owl me!

Abby,

Thank you for your letter, it was very timely. I'm feeling I am alright. The article did not catch me completely off guard, my father had written the night before with the news. Chocolate and doodles are always welcome.

You might be surprised to know that I will be attending the Ball with a Slytherin classmate: Theo Whitman? I suppose the purebloods all know each other.

Everyone has been rather nice to me since the article was published although I wish it hadn't been read at all. Being angry might have been easier if nobody knew my motivations at all; they could attribute it to adolescent malaise instead. But don't let me brood for too long or I will start to ramble that son of a bans wretched man.

Tell me, how have you been?

Regards,

Raine Almasy

Raine,

Whitman?!? Holy harpies! Sorry. Yes, purebloods do indeed know each other! I'm trying to focus on the article. But Whitman?! Remember when I told you my sister used to be married? Yup, she married a Whitman. Oz Whitman, actually, who is now some big shot on the Wizengamot. So what is Theo like? Not at all stalker-y, is he? In return for your protectiveness at parties, Raine (haha, the tables have turned!) I will keep a close eye on him at the ball.

A) because he is probably handsome and
B) because he is dancing with you and should be a gentleman. Unless you don't want him to be a gentleman. Rolls on Ground Laughing!

>text speak.

So the article. You have every right to be angry! I won't let you brood too long if you don't want to be brooding, don't worry. You can ramble as long as you like, Merlin knows I do.

That man... I completely understand if you don't want to talk about it. Did you know him? Did he just go crazy one day? I'm here if you need to write/talk.

Same old same old for me, mostly. I've been hanging out with Jacoba (Sasha's sis) and a lot. Internship is still going well. I do have stuff to tell you, but I don’t want to say it in a letter.

It's not as bad as it sounds. Not even bad, but awkward. I think.
