Full Character Name: Jason Zachary Marren
Character Birthday & Age: 17 April 1976
City & Country of Birth:Dundalk, Ireland
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn?: Halfblood
Alma Mater: Ravenclaw
Job: Healer-in-Charge of the First Floor
Wand: 10 inch (dark) Oak with Ashwinder Ash, pliable and knobby with finger worked grooves in the handle.
Physical Description:Standing at six feet tall, Jason’s long legs, lean body, and natural hyperactive attitude adds to his likeable persona. He will do as much without the use of his wand as possible, and enjoys jogging when he feels in the mood (or has a day off). Sometimes running after his son (or wife) is enough exercise in a day.
Dark blonde hair and blue eyes adorn his face, often accompanied with a days growth or more of stubble. Slowly over the years his hair has started to recede farther back from his temples. Keeping his hair short has always been his style; the longer it gets, the more it takes to manage it. On occasion he feels that his hair line is more noticeable than normal and will take to wearing hats; at work, he’ll wear the healer’s cap, and at home he’ll put on ragged and worn hats he has dug out of some closet or another.
Jason’s emotions are often easily readable. Tending to wear his heart on his sleeve, Jason prefers it this way. Often his eyes or some shift of his facial features leaves those around him with a greater indication of what is wrong. Other times, though, he can mask what he is feeling; it's important as a professional who deals with patients to be able to do that.
Jason has very few marks on him. The more notable scars are on his lower legs; years as a boy running through fields, climbing trees, and other boyish things left lasting impressions, though the leg hair has made their faint reminder all but impossible to recall.
Personality Description:Jason can appear to be very clean cut to most people. He keeps his space at work organized, works within a tight schedule, makes friends and makes it through his day with a smile on his face. If one looks deeper, they find a lot more to the man behind the Healer robes than they previously thought. Perhaps it was the robe that clued most who come through his curtains to the fact that he is not your every day wizard.
When he isn’t working, or is sitting at home, a comfortable shirt (if he bothers wearing one) and a pair of trousers or shorts does him just fine. His lifestyle has never been extravagant. He enjoys comfortable colors and soothing curves to sharp edges. Clutter is something he doesn’t like, and takes pride in irritating his wife when he cleans up her natural disasters.
As far as his attitude goes, Jason is quite precise and stubborn. He hates being told he is wrong, and will argue his point just to win. His anger can be quick to flare up, though it may dissipate just as quickly. Little things may set him off, though that is normally because ‘things’ have built up over time that the wrong step could anger him.
While he can be a stubborn irritated man, Jason also has his sweet moments. He’ll bring home a bouquet of flowers just because they looked particularly red that day, or he’ll surprise Fiona with a new book and a candlelit dinner. He can be sweet when the mood strikes. When it comes to showing affection, he has no trouble. It has always been important to him to be there for his family and those he cares about.
Sweet and stubborn aside, though, there is a bit of Jason that could be classified as having a bit too much energy. With Healer hours for years, as well as dealing with Fiona and the new baby, he has learned to adapt to little sleep. Just because you couldn’t get enough shut eye doesn’t mean you don’t have as many responsibilities to do the next day. Coffee and natural spirit get him through his days, and normally with an irritatingly big grin on his face.
History:April was a time of rain and spring and blooming flowers. For Mary Marren, however, it was a time of pain and screaming. Garret Marren held his wife’s hand as she gave birth to Jason Zachary Marren. A bundle of joy, the doctor’s called him, though the parents got little sleep from the little boy for the first year. That was quite all right, though; the parents celebrated in true Irish fashion: with a drink. Garret, the wizard in the family, kept the small family entertained with wand tricks. Sometimes that was what helped little Jason fall to sleep.
He was three when his little brother was born. Timothy was quite different from Jason. He gave the doctor’s quite a bit of trouble on the way out, but once he was there, he was quiet and docile. While his parents had anticipated another year of three hour naps to help get them through their work, they were oddly surprised to find that Tim, after the first couple months, slept five hours a night no problem.
Throughout his childhood, his mother would often take him with her to work. There was a daycare at the hospital Mary worked, and days when she could, Jason would follow her around while she did her thing. She was a nurse, and very good at what she did. There was one day that Jason was allowed to go with his dad to work. Garret worked as a photographer for the Daily Prophet. While he was kept busy some days, Jason found it boring. He never requested to go back out with his dad.
By the time he was eight, another little baby was on the way. Derek was born just before Jason’s ninth birthday. Each child is different to each other in some way or another. Derek came out with no problems (Mary says he walked out), and smiled from the very first day. An easy going nature, Derek made his family laugh from the first few stumbles he made to the first word he spoke. All in all, the brothers evened each other out with their personalities.
Jason enjoyed his childhood. He had his brothers to drive him insane and his parents to keep him in line. When he got his Hogwarts owl, he was ecstatic. It was something a wizard child looked forward to since they first heard about it. He was sorted into Ravenclaw and started to hang out with a mix of boys. One of the boys, an older student named Felix Dagon, quickly became his best friend. Jason would come up with ideas and pranks to pull, and Felix (among other boys) would be the one to actually do them.
Tim started at Hogwarts as Jason entered his fourth year. Luckily for both boys (or perhaps not so much at the time), Tim was put into the same house as his big brother. Though Tim tried to hang on to his older brother, to join his group of friends and tag along, the age differences between Felix and Tim were too great. Tim didn’t understand about girls yet, while Jason and Felix had little else to talk about. In the end, Tim found his own group of friends and applied himself to different subjects and extracurricular activities than Jason, who loved herbology and potions.
When Felix graduated (two years ahead of Jason), they grew apart for a while. Felix had Kayleigh and his newborn daughter to take care of while Jason had O.W.L.s to start worrying about. They kept in touch over school time and hung out during breaks, but the relationship changed and matured a bit after Felix left school. Jason was able to apply himself a lot more to studies since his prank buddy was gone.
Upon graduation in 1993, Jason decided on a position as a healer in training at St. Mungo’s. He caught on quickly and spent the next three years under the tutelage of one of the top healers on the Alberic Grunnion ward. Jason’s ability to recall things that he had very limited experience with allowed him to earn more respect amongst the other healers on the floor, making his transition from Healer-in-Training to Healer much easier. His potion making skills were among the top for a novice, and his willingness to learn and study abroad when he wasn’t at St. Mungo’s gave him a step up. He wasn’t tied down, didn’t have children, and had a natural desire to travel (or at least move constantly) that he was able to give himself a more holistic view of his art.
When the Second Wizarding War hit full swing, Jason was working overtime every week at St. Mungo’s. Even with the fear of persecution for being half blooded, he felt it was his duty to show up to work for the sick and wounded. The tension was high, and the limited time he had off was spent with his family and best friend. The Battle at Hogwarts means something different for everyone who lived during the time. For Felix, he lost Kay. For Kay, it had been her duty to the public. For Jason, he felt a similar pull of duty. He was one of the first Healers there helping with the wounded and transporting them back to St. Mungo’s. It wasn’t until later that he found out about Kayleigh’s demise.
Felix drew away for a while, and Jason let him—he had known Kay for years as well, among others who had lost their lives during the War, and felt a bit isolated and alone. He fell back into his work, throwing himself head first into anything he could. It kept him busy.
That was about to change, however, when he stumbled upon Fiona. He didn’t often make time to stop off at a museum, but was interested in what the British Wizarding History Museum had to offer as far as ancient Healing techniques. She definitely warmed part of his heart from the start, with her quick fire attitude and sarcastic wit. Neither was any hurry, though, and Jason willingly took it slow.
In 2001, Jason decided to transfer to the Janus Thickey Ward. He had gotten tired of what he felt was a dead end area. He wasn’t in the position long, however, when he quickly realized that the long term patient care area of St. Mungo’s was not his niche. His position on Alberic Grunnion had been filled, however, and the only other spot open to him at the time was from the first floor. Creature injuries had never interested him before, but at the time he thought anything would be better than where he was. It was shortly after getting there that it all just clicked. He loved it; the atmosphere on the wards, the different and wide range of acuity and possibilities for what you might see, and the possibility for professional growth.
When Fiona was home, and not off training for bookhunting, they spent time together. Their relationship became comfortable, steady—but her mother (and his parents as well) hinted and prodded about what they planned to do. Anything beyond where they were was going to take planning, however—Fiona didn’t want to marry, nor did she want children. At first, Jason didn’t want to even think about it himself. Then he started to think about everything both parents said. Slowly Jason started to change her mind. Gentle persuasion over time seemed to soften her up a bit. When he proposed, it was only a matter of time before everything started to ‘click into place,’ whether Fiona was ready or not.
They married in January of 2005, much to the delight of their parents. After four and a half years, it was “
about time,” as someone said at the reception. Of course, after marriage came the next prodding questions: when should their parents expect some grandchildren? That was an off limits question, however—both Fiona and Jason wanted to enjoy their marriage, and though Jason wanted children, he wasn’t going to push Fiona.
Well… that was until the accident. Later in 2005, after she finished her Bookhunter-in-Training and began working as a Bookhunter alongside her partner/mentor, she would go off on her own little book hunting expeditions. Jason could never talk her into letting him tag along—in his opinion, what better use for a healer than having the possibility of using his trade? Until the accident, Jason let her brush his concerns off. Until she apparated into their kitchen, he hadn’t imagined what all trouble she could get up to. Until then, Jason had never been so scared in his life; he took one look at all the blood, the gash that seemed to go through her entire body, and the slowly advancing red tide on the tile, and he nearly lost it.
Rushing her to St. Mungo’s, Jason can’t remember most of what happened. Jason knew his trade, was a competent healer, but once it involved someone he cared about… he was useless. He waited at her side from the moment she apparated onto the kitchen tile, book outstretched, to the moment she was being discharged. Jason was able to rearrange work days to be there. At first, he thought he was going to lose her. The grief didn’t allow him much movement. Thankfully, other healers were just as competent as he was, and they were able to replenish her blood. Life took some time to get back to some sense of normalcy after that, however, and the thought of waiting for Fiona to want to have children quickly grew old.
She’d probably grow old before she willingly offered it.
So it was around the end of 2005 that Jason started to pressure Fiona about children. By the time she agreed (or at least didn’t shoot him down), the new year had rolled around. Now it was just a matter of planning it. As they did that, Jason took it upon himself (with the help of her mother) to put an ad out for an assistant to Fiona, a bookhunter-in-training to both watch out for her and help her work load when he talked her into a pregnancy date. She had finally at least assented to having a child, but kept finding excuses and rationale to put it off another year, at least. This was Jason’s way of stopping any argument she could slip in.
After interviewing dozens of possibilities, Jason interviewed Frank Pratt. The younger man seemed eager to learn and had an inkling for history that Jason really didn’t share. He enjoyed the aspect of healthcare and history, but all the other stuff bored him to pieces. He liked Frank, though, and knew that he would at least be able to deal with Fiona’s temper tantrums. Then it was just the figuring out how to tell her she had an assistant without her assent. Jason had to deal with her anger and mood when he told her about Frank, and after the threats (some of which he wasn’t sure as to whether they were empty or not), they finally got into planning for the baby.
Fiona got pregnant in the summer of 2006. As excited as Jason was (and Fiona too, though she probably wouldn’t tell anyone), he still had work to accomplish and goals to keep in mind. He felt a pull to reenergize his career; Jason felt stuck in his position at St. Mungo’s, and while he could have gone and traveled, he wanted to stay close to Fiona and the baby. There were talks of retirement amongst some of the higher ups, and Jason started to apply himself more.
Their son, Aidan, was born 23 March 2007, a healthy little guy. Jason took off a week to spend time with his little family. Though he occasionally missed the free and childless time he had with Fiona prior to the little tyke, Jason loved the challenge that came with being a father and husband. Both roles were new to him, and after not expecting either in his long term relationship with Fiona, it was bound to be just as overwhelming for her. Luckily, though, she had her own paid slave to run around and do her bidding. Frank was working with Gareth Ambridge (Fiona’s mentor) when she was busy at home with Aidan, and Jason didn’t have to worry about Fiona running off (quite yet) for the next book.
So much had happened to Jason in the last couple years that more was just going to add to the strain of life. Even with his son and
wonderful, caring, and
loving wife, he still felt bored with his career. The opportunity finally came on his floor to move up in the ranks. Jason applied as soon as he heard, instantly excited. He always had ideas to help better the wards, and it just seemed easier the more influence you had with the top Healer(s). In late 2007, Jason accepted the position as Healer-in-Charge of the first floor.
It’s any wonder that he can sleep at all anymore. From working full time as a HIC-F at St. Mungo’s and trying to keep an eye on his son, he hardly has time for much else. He loves the busy lifestyle, though, and is more than happy to have it.
What is your occupation? How do you go about it?
How did you get your current occupation?
How does your past and abilities justify your current skills?:Jason is the Healer-in-Charge for the First Floor (Creature-Induced Injuries) at St. Mungo’s. After graduating from Hogwarts, Jason began as a Healer-in-Training that summer and spent the next three years under the observation of a few different Healer’s. He took every opportunity he could, outside of work, to go to different workshops and seminars to get a more holistic understanding of his profession and allow him different approaches to various problems that could come up throughout the day. Once he finished his training, he moved from ward to ward trying to find his healing niche.
Finally, in 2002, he found it on the first floor. After five years there, he applied for the position of Charge, feeling that while he loved working one on one with patients, he also wanted to experience the next level in administration. It allows him, from time to time, to still get in patient care, but also allows him the leeway to give his healers what he feels they need. He still takes time out of his schedule to travel; yearly holidays are usually spent somewhere he can learn about new plants or potions and ways that other Healers handle their art. Jason is constantly fascinated with his profession and constantly feels the need to learn something new.
Writing Sample:Bouncing on the ball of his feet, Jason bit his lower lip and looked around. Where were they? Glancing to his watch, he paused. Ten minutes all ready! His hand hit the counter top with a soft thud and his fingertips started to drum on it rhythmically. It soothed the irritation a little, at least.
Where could they be? It’s not like it takes that long to get here. When he heard the knock, he startled from his spot and leaped a step forward. Pausing just before he wrenched open the door, he smoothed out his robes and put an easy going smile on his face. His heart felt as if it was about to thump right out of his chest and onto the floor. It would have made for an interesting clean up, anyway… Grasping the cool door knob, he twisted and pulled, grinning at his brothers. “What took you so long?” Giving them each a hug and thump on the back, Jason closed the door behind them.
He didn’t want to be late for work; they always pushed his buttons, though. After nearly thirty years with both of them, the brothers all knew which ones to push to get the other brother just irritated enough to not cause an all out attack. The barb under the shirt, gnome in the garden, that sort of thing; a nuisance that he wouldn’t have wanted to get rid of. Tim smirked as he glanced at Derek. “
I should just tell him.” Derek shrugged and merely glanced away, trying to keep the smirk from his face. What else could they do but keep Jason out of the loop? He
hated that.
“What?” Watching them, he felt his smirk falling slightly. “Oh, come on! You can’t be serious. I’ve got work! Plus, if Fiona sees I'm still here, I'll really be late.” His tone turned a bit whiny as both laughed at him. A little more hassling and Tim finally rolled his eyes, smirking. “
You’ve got a niece, Unc’ie Jas.” What a cute nickname. Grinning once again, Jason gave his brother a big hug and clap on the back. Just what they needed; more kids to spoil rotten.
Sum up your character in one paragraph:As the first floor’s Healer-in-Charge, Jason takes his job very seriously. He believes strongly in quality healthcare and patient safety. His life has gotten hectic over the years; now divorced and with a baby, Jason is learning how to juggle work, life, and mess with little sleep. He likes the challenge he has in his life, though, and tries to keep drama to a minimum. So much for that.
